Weil das Zellmaterial aus nur einem Kristall besteht, ist die Oberfläche der Zellen homogen dunkelblau bis schwarz. Die elektrische Qualität von monokristallinen Solarzellen ist sehr hoch. Hochleistungszellen Hersteller und Forschungsinstitute arbeiten kontinuierlich an der Verbesserung von Solarzellen. Hochleistungszellen zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sich ihre Wirkungsgrade deutlich von der Masse abheben. Sie basieren beispielsweise auf dem Einsatz hochreinen Siliziums sowie auf besseren Zellstrukturen in Verbindung mit innovativen Kontaktierungen, z. B. einer Rückseitenkontaktierung. Dadurch werden Zellwirkungsgrade von über 22 % erreicht. Andere Hersteller kombinieren verschiedene Technologien, beispielsweise indem sie monokristalline Wafer mit einer zusätzlichen amorphen Siliziumschicht beschichten und so die Zellwirkungsgrade über 21 % erhöhen. Eine Möglichkeit, Hochleistungszellen kostengünstig zu fertigen, bietet das sogenannte PERC-Konzept, bei dem polykristalline Zellen in automatisierten Standardprozessen weiterverarbeitet werden. PERC steht für »Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell«, Emitter und Rückseite der Zelle sind durch eine Schutzschicht so beschaffen, dass auftreffendes Licht gespiegelt und zum Wafer zurück reflektiert wird. Auf diese Weise kann zusätzliche Energie nutzbar gemacht werden. Es sind damit Wirkungsgrade um 19 % möglich.

Solarzellen auf Basis von kristallinem Silizium (Si) dominieren mit einem Anteil von 90 % den heutigen Markt. Silizium ist ein ungiftiges und in der Elektronik bereits länger bekanntes sowie erprobtes Material. Nach Sauerstoff ist es das zweithäufigste Element auf der Erde und damit reichlich verfügbar. Es kommt jedoch nicht in Reinform vor, sondern muss aus eingeschmolzenem Quarzsand unter hohen Temperaturen gewonnen werden. In chemischen Verfahren wird das Rohsilizium so lange gereinigt, bis ein nahezu hundertprozentiger Reinheitsgrad erreicht ist. bzw. 72 Zellen in einem, mitunter in zwei Zellsträngen (Strings) elektrisch hintereinander (in Reihe) verschaltet. Geometrisch ordnet man die Solarzellen im Module häufig in 4 – 6 Zellreihen an. Sie werden im Herstellungsprozess zwischen einer Glasscheibe auf der Vorderseite und einer Kunststoffverbundfolie (z. B. Tedlar) auf der Rückseite verkapselt, indem sie beidseitig in den durchsichtigen Kunststoff Ethylenvinylacetat (EVA) eingebettet werden und sind so vor Witterungseinflüssen, mechanischen Beanspruchungen und Feuchtigkeit geschützt sind. Als Frontglas dient ein spezielles, gehärtetes Solarglas, das eisenoxidarm und daher besonders lichtdurchlässig ist. Die meisten Module sind mit einem Rahmen aus Aluminium versehen, der die empfindlichen Glaskanten schützt und zur Montage genutzt wird. Der Einsatz von rahmenlosen Modulen ist mit entsprechenden Montageklemmen bei achtsamer Montage ebenfalls problemlos möglich. Über rückseitig aufgeklebte Anschlussdosen werden die elektrischen Kontakte aus dem Modul herausgeführt. Die Dosen sind standardmäßig mit Anschlussleitungen sowie verpolungs- und berührungssicheren Steckkontakten versehen. Neben EVA bei Standardmodulen werden mitunter auch Polyvinylbutyral (PVB), Teflon oder Gießharz zur Verkapselung verwendet. Diese Alternativen kommen zum Einsatz, wenn statt einer Rückseitenfolie Rückseitenglas verwendet wird. Solche Doppelglasmodule eignen sich als Überkopfverglasung und für den Fassadenbau (Abb. 4.6). Bei Solarmodulen unterscheidet man zwischen Standardoder Sondermodulen. Standardmodule werden »von der Stange« in großen Stückzahlen preisgünstig für Photovoltaik-Anlagen hergestellt, die keine speziellen Anforderungen an die Module stellen. Sie werden mit Standard-Montagesystemen auf dem Dach oder auf Freiflächen installiert. Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Materialien und Konzepten für Solarzellen (Abb. 4.8), die sich in Form und Farbe sowie in ihren Eigenschaften und Leistungsdaten unterscheiden. Im Folgenden werden einige wichtige Solarzellentypen vorgestellt.

Integrative linking of indoor and outdoor spaces Building openings provide light, ventilation and climate control for rooms. At the same time, they are essential functional and design elements of facades, enabling communication between indoor and outdoor spaces as transparent or translucent structural components. Similar to the entire building envelope, windows and exterior doors must meet exacting standards for materials, construction types and installation conditions, as well as for fire, noise and thermal insulation, energy efficiency, airtightness and building security.

Brenz, Germany (Fig. B 4.6). The facade completely covers the three-storey factory. While the outer shell is suspended in front of the support structure from top to bottom, the inner shell spans each storey from floor to ceiling. Light-filled production floors ensured optimal working conditions. The double skin construction aimed to prevent heat gains known from greenhouses. Since the 1980s, ever more large office and administrative buildings have been built with full-surface glass facades, increasingly executed with a double skin, a modern development wherein the principle of the box-type window is applied to the entire building envelope. Extensive double-skin glass facades cover modern winter gardens, hotel lobbies as well as entire office buildings and transit halls such as Strasbourg’s main station, which was built almost completely as a “glass dome” (Fig. B 4.7) Today, around half of all new high-rise buildings have double skin glass facades. Starting from the 1990’s, technical literature has dubbed it the double glazed facade (DGF, Fig. B 4.8). They are considered to be the most energy efficient facade type for high-rise buildings. Prominent and innovative high-rises with double glazed facades from the 1990s include the Victoria Haus in Dusseldorf, the RWE Tower in Essen and the Atrium Tower (previously debis House) in Berlin.

It covers materials, components, construction types and specifics of structural connections, including solutions on how to deal with existing older windows and issues of ventilation, the use of solar energy and ecological sustainability. Detailed case studies of successfully completed projects offer a wealth of constructive ideas for the reader’s own work.
Composite window
One of the first illustrations of double glazing dates from 1877, found in a practical guide for carpenters (Fig. B 4.9) [2]. The manufacture of composite windows is described as “a lighter window leaf that is set on top of the main leaf, which contains the front glass and allows cleaning of all glass panes”. The singleglazed window typical for that time receives an additional glazed leaf, mounted with sash fasteners and opened with special fittings. Between 1880 and 1920, composite windows developed from this detail and were manufactured individually or in small series. At the start of the 20th century, the next goal was to improve the commonplace box-type and winter window constructions or to replace them with ones that were easier to manage and at the same time optimised light penetration and reduced material use. All eyes were on the composite window. A few companies, some of which exist to this day, began series

production of corresponding special fittings as early as the 1930s. The composite window is the only window construction where two leafs positioned one in front of the other are rigidly attached with specially developed fittings. The essential characteristic of these windows is the common pivot of both leafs on the frame. The construction principle is that of a doubled single-glazed window (Fig. B 4.10). Until WWII, composite window constructions remained individually produced pieces and were widely differentiated. A broad scope of technical options were tested (Fig. B 4.12 and B 4.13, p. 152; Fig. B 4.18, p. 153). It was not

until the decades of post-war reconstruction that the composite window appeared on a large scale. Standardised constructions displaced custom solutions. The first oil crisis of 1973 gave rise to another boost in production, and many single-glazed windows were replaced by energy efficient composite windows. These windows were used in nearly all public buildings. A variety of building-specific window constructions came about from the principles developed by Wagner, Rekord and Braun windows (Fig. B 4.11, p. 151). The most popular variations have nearly identical constructions, differentiated primarily by the spacing of window leafs.
