The Facade in the 21st Century In recent years, facades have become more important in architectural practice and in public perception. As well as functioning as a protective shell and visible ‘face’ and supplying heat and electricity, a building’s exterior interacts directly with the surrounding public space. The Facade Construction Manual was revised and expanded by
current projects. This new edition offers readers technical and design planning fundamentals in a compact reference work. A section describing a comprehensive selection of built structures shows general and unique, tried and tested, and innovative approaches to facade planning – down to the last detail.
Over 100 examples of built structures Material-specific approaches for use in planning facades Technical planning fundamentals Special issues involving modern facade concepts More than 250 detailed drawings and sketches and around 700 illustrations

A Review on Three Decades of Architecture Which design principles and construction methods have established themselves in architecture in the last 25 years? What social trends have influenced architecture? Which technical innovations had an impact and what has become of their approaches? Which architects stepped into the limelight at this time and how have they developed? Christian Schittich has explored these and many other questions. He tells the individual history of outstanding buildings in chrono-
logical order, with an eye to the overall context of architectural development of recent years. Looking at selected photographs and drawings documenting the construction process and/or the current state of the building: wherein lies the significance of a building’s design, what technical innovations did it involve and what effect did they have? Or did the construction method prove itself at all? An exciting discourse about three decades of architectural history.
A personal look at a recent and rich architectural history What trends have individual structures sparked; what standards have been redefined? Directional architecture in its social, artistic and technical context

Architecture and Construction Details Who hasn’t heard of the internationally renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron of Switzerland, and its unprecedented rise since its founding in 1978? How do these architects always succeed with innovative approaches, forging individuality and employing classical materials in heretofore unknown ways in their designs? Where do they find the inspiration for their unique ideas, and how do they achieve such a confident implementation of their

members, the staff canteen and special events. Like the outer walls of a castle, a circular tamped concrete retaining wall screens the entrance area from the pedestrian zone, allowing the creation of a level entrance forecourt with stepped terraces for a cafe. The wall also keeps visitors initially at a distance from the tower, so that they can perceive the intersections of the various planes of the angular outer skin and the interplay of light and shade on these. Ascending inside is almost like going on an adventure, no floor plan is alike, and the storey heights vary. From the generous foyer, with its chasm-like space providing air for a breather, the route leads up a winding sculptural staircase, past the club room and members’ bar, to a public restaurant and roof terrace. spaces, almost 5,000 m2 in extent, occupy nearly a quarter of the overall area, forming the dominant impression in comparison with the often lower and more intimate exhibition cabinets and neutral white-box galleries. Switchboard of the Tate Modern project As an extension of one of the most success ful cultural institutions in the world, the Switch House plays a surprisingly restrained role, continuing the design language and series of spaces with contemporary means and forming simply one further component of the long-term Tate Modern project. In 2000, Her zog & de Meuron’s conversion of the 1950s Bankside power station into a gallery for modern art caused a sensation. Herzog & de Meuron turned the 200-metre-long, five-storey Turbine Hall into an empty space that

Herzog & de Meuron in DETAIL
A Brick Coat of Mail for the Tate Modern Switch House Londoners have already become accustomed to their latest museum building, which, according to mayor Sadiq Khan, is the “most significant cultural building in Britain of the last two decades”. With its narrow horizontal viewing slits and perforated brick skin reminiscent of a coat of mail, this addition to the Tate Modern speaks an artistically inspired architectural language. Despite its 64-metre height, which is higher than the existing thin chimney, it forms an ensemble with the existing structure without dominating it.
designs? How detailed is the planning at Herzog & de Meuron? We scoured our archives at DETAIL and uncovered more than 25 publications since 2000, including reports, interviews, technical contributions and several project files. This monograph from the DETAIL publishing house about Herzog & de Meuron delves, as usual, a bit deeper behind the scenes and describes processes, all while highlighting one thing: plenty of construction details.

Design, materials and facade: Details behind an exciting trio Projects and processes became its own exhibit and could be used as a foyer and as a space for talks and exhibi tions. The creation of the Millennium Bridge by Norman Foster, forming a visual axis with St Paul’s Cathedral, opened a route for many more visitors not just along Southbank Promenade but also directly from the City. Switch House vs. Boiler House Just a few years later, visitor numbers have reached five million per year instead of the anticipated two million. The directors have taken the new building not just as an opportunity to extend the exhibition spaces but also to sharpen the Tate’s profile by shifting attention to areas of art hitherto underrepresented in the international art scene: the relevance of female artists, performance art, photography and video. Herzog & de Meuron’s successful competition entry in 2005 proposed a wide range of spatial qualities to complement the existing facilities. Where the former transformer station stood, the new structure rises with a geometry that seems to turn itself by 45° from the ground floor to the roof terrace, so that the latter is parallel to the first museum and enters a visual relationship with it. The dynamic verticality of the structure is dialectically juxtaposed with the restrained enfilades of the existing Boiler House, where the steam used to be pro duced, while the large Turbine Hall forms a linking element. At basement level and via a new bridge at third floor level, visitors have access through this “belly” of the New Tate from the Switch House to the former Boiler House.
Tate Modern, London
Oil tanks as foundation The conceptual starting point and foundation of the new structure are the more than three-metre-thick reinforced concrete walls of the underground oil tanks with their clover-leaf layout. Today, they form a “nether world” for videos and performance art. Newly installed concrete pillars can be clearly distinguished by their tilt. The originally planned opening date of the £260-million new building had to be moved by four years due to a lack of sponsorship during the financial crisis. Thus, during the Olympic Games in 2012, only the tanks with art installations were open to visitors. But even after construction of the Switch House, traces of the tanks are still vi sible. From the roof of the Switch House, one can still see the clover-leaf layout of the outer walls, which is traced by the line of the forecourt retaining wall. Transparent brick building? From across the Thames, the silhouette of the Switch House seems almost to merge with the neighbouring, similarly high and fully glazed housing scheme by Rogers Stirk Har bour. One can see why Herzog & de Meuron initially proposed a glass skin for their new building. Only in the revision phase was the glazed tower enclosed in a brick coat of mail, which engenders a greater sense of unity between the Switch House and Giles Gilbert Scott’s existing structure, as well as providing sunshading and retaining the monolithic overall character. At dusk, light shines through the brise-soleil brick skin, transforming the building into a lantern. By day, the strong
facade texturing and the different inclinations and orientations of the individual facade surfaces enhance the constantly changing play of light. But even on dark and rainy days, the surface creates a vivid impression. A “pixel” of the brick facade consists of two light and dark bricks mortared above each other. The different colour combinations are distributed in such a way that they create a homogenous blanket of 336,000 bricks. On the edges, the bricks are joined like hinges and appear ran domly cracked. The perforations also have statistical benefits: consoles and anchors are open to the wind, resulting in less push-andpull forces and less weight, and their dimensions can therefore be reduced. Catalyst for the South Bank The Switch House helps reposition not just the Tate Modern but the whole area. The huge volume of the former power station no longer has its old rear face. At pedestrian level, it has been opened to the Thames and to the neighbourhood, with entrances and throughways from three sides. Despite its relatively low height, the 9th-floor roof terrace of the Switch House offers a spectacular 360° view and many will choose this free view over the horrendous entry prices for the viewing platform on the 72nd floor of the Shard.

Their use of wood is characterised by an inspired innovative creativity. Projects from Vorarlberg are bold: multiple storeys, prefabrication, urban housing, industrial buildings are all matters of course and reveal an impressively wide-ranging vision of ‘traditional’ timber construction.

Reimagining Compression Shells There is much to learn from the forgotten architectural and structural principles developed by the master builders of the past. Novel structural design tools that extend traditional graphical methods to three dimensions allow designers to discover a vast range of possible forms in compression. By better understanding the flow of compressive forces in three dimensions, excess steel can be eliminated, natural resources can be conserved, and humble materials
like earth and stone can be reimagined for the future. The book presents the theoretical and methodical foundations of the awardwinning Beyond Bending exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016, giving in-depth analyses, interviews and numerous illustrations and drawings for insight into the making of the exhibition’s centerpiece, the Armadillo Vault. The Block Research Group is the DETAIL Reader Prize Winner of 2016.
