Looking back on 2023, we reflect on places and everyday moments – some familiar and cherished, others surprising and fresh. Laura Traub, our Viennabased editorial assistant, gives insight into her local neighbourhood or “Grätzl” in the 18th district, where Otto Wagner’s architecture is integral to daily life. My colleague Jakob Schoof recounts his energetic jog through Copenhagen’s museum landscape as part of the Danish Architecture Center’s Architecture Run. Heide Wessely expresses her affection for Barcelona, where she spent several months in 2023. And I fondly remember the enchanting atmosphere on the rooftop terrace of Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium, which I visited this summer. In the 1930s, tuberculosis patients lay there, wrapped in warm blankets, gazing at the same captivating landscape I experienced – an endless pine forest stretching to the horizon, devoid of civilization, just nature and sky. It was an exceptional experience for someone like me who hails from the bustling city – where urban life is becoming denser and space increasingly limited. This December issue is dedicated to urban density and the architectural solutions needed to achieve it. While we understand the necessity of densification, few are eager to sacrifice their own space – the “not in my backyard” sentiment prevails. Swiss urban sociologist Joëlle Zimmerli delves into this dilemma in her essay. Our Documentation section showcases recent projects that successfully implement densification scenarios and enhance the urban space.

Zum Abschluss des Jahres stellen wir in unserem persönlichen Blick auf 2023 Orte und Alltagserlebnisse vor, die mal vertraut und ans Herz gewachsen, mal aufregend und neu sind. Laura Traub, unsere Redaktionsassistentin in Wien, schildert die Welt in ihrem Grätzl – im 18. Bezirk, wo Otto Wagners Architektur zum Alltag gehört. Mein Kollege Jakob Schoof ist sportlich durch die Museumslandschaft in Kopenhagen gejoggt – beim Architecture Run des dänischen Architekturzentrums. Heide Wessely schwärmt von ihrer Traumstadt Barcelona, in der sie 2023 viele Monate verbracht hat. Und ich selbst erinnere mich gerne an die magische Stimmung auf der Dachterrasse von Alvar Aaltos Paimio-Sanatorium, das ich im Sommer besucht habe. Früher lagen dort die Tuberkulosepatienten, warm eingehüllt in Decken. Ihren Blick haben sie in den 1930erJahren in dieselbe Landschaft gelenkt, die mich in ihren Bann gezogen hat. Endloser Kiefernwald bis zum Horizont, nirgendwo Zivilisation in Sicht, alles ist Natur und Himmel. Eine Ausnahmeerfahrung für Menschen wie mich, die aus der Großstadt kommen. Als eine der wichtigsten Bauaufgaben überhaupt wird uns das Bauen im Bestand auch im neuen Jahr begleiten. Mit den Ausgaben im Mai und Juni zum Wohnen im Bestand und zum klimaneutralen Bauen setzen wir dazu bei Detail eigene Schwerpunkte. Außerdem stehen das einfache und kostengünstige Bauen (1/2.2024) auf unserer Agenda. Auf den Holzbau und die Vorfertigung werden wir im November unseren Fokus richten, und die Konzept-Ausgaben im nächsten Jahr dokumentieren gelungene Schulbauten sowie den Wandel in der Bürowelt. Das Buchprogramm von Edition Detail ergänzt all das mit vertiefenden Praxis-Bänden zum Holzbau im Bestand und zu grünen Fassaden, mit einem Porträt der Architekturregion Flandern und vielem mehr. Wird die Klimawende nächstes Jahr kommen und wie wird sich die Architektur 2024 verändern? Wer dazu klare Aussagen trifft, kann hellsehen. Gleichzeitig können wir beobachten, dass wir uns bereits auf den Weg gemacht haben, Gebäude und Architektur anders zu denken und bisherige Konzepte kritisch zu hinterfragen. Wir setzen uns zunehmend mit der Frage auseinander, welche konkreten Schritte zum klimagerechten Bauen wir umsetzen können. Schöne Weihnachtstage und viel Zuversicht für ein glückliches und friedliches neues Jahr.

or zehn Jahren haben Sie den Pritzker-Preis erhalten. Was sind die wichtigsten Veränderungen und Herausforderungen, die sich seither in Bezug auf Ihre Arbeit ergeben haben? Wie Sie bestimmt wissen, engagiere ich mich schon lange in Katastrophengebieten. Bis vor Kurzem war dies hauptsächlich in Regionen der Fall, die von Umweltkatastrophen betroffen waren. Momentan arbeite ich jedoch an einem Projekt in der Ukraine. Das Tragische ist, dass die Katastrophe dort menschengemacht ist. Die unzureichenden Bedingungen in den Notunterkünften ähneln sehr stark jenen, die wir nach Umweltkatastrophen zu sehen bekommen. Ich arbeite mit Architekten vor Ort zusammen; gemeinsam mit der Stadtverwaltung von Lwiw wollen wir ein Krankenhaus aus Holz

hat are the most significant changes and challenges that have influenced your work since you were awarded the Pritzker Prize 10 years ago? As you know, I have been working extensively in disaster areas. Until recently, mainly in areas which were hit by environmental disasters. Right now, I have an ongoing project in Ukraine. The tragedy is human-made and the poor shelter conditions are very similar to the ones we encounter after environmental disasters. I am collaborating with local architects and with the city of Lviv to build a hospital in timber. There are so many things architects can do here to improve the situation.

Circular thinking is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. There is even a word for it, mottainai, a sort of no-waste philosophy. But nowadays, Japan seems to have turned into a throwaway-society. Almost any product here seems to be wrapped in multiple layers of single use plastic. Why? I see your point, but I am likely not the right person to ask this question. I always reuse materials, for example paper. When I see my staff, I tell them to reuse things, to use both sides of sheets of paper, to deploy materials in an efficient way. All my handwritings and sketches are basically written and drawn on the reverse side of a sheet of waste paper. That should be the common way of dealing with things, also when choosing building materials.

Redensification typically increases usable area. In the village centre of Lichtenfels in northern Bavaria, Peter Haimerl and his clients chose a different strategy to reinvigorate the heart of the town. The new structure facing the market square is significantly smaller than its demolished predecessor building. It features circumferential glazing, minimally dimensioned facade frames and canopies, as well as slender metal posts in the interiors. As a result, the new volume appears nearly invisible between the historic half-timbered houses. Its impact on the urban space is less due to architectural measures than two artificial trees with sculptural appeal and consisting of metal with golden hues. As Peter Haimerl explains his concept, “in earlier times, citizens felt obligated to express their wealth and

pride through elaborately adorned facades and, hence, create an attractive context for good business.” Next to the town hall, the two steel tree sculptures with their golden sheen act as real eye-catchers. Similar to visual magnets, they invite people to stay and relax while illuminating the shadowy alleys. As the architect states, “even by sustainably renovating the inadequately lit existing building, it would not have been possible to create something so impactful.” However, the volume of the demolished existing structure is still perceivable. A solid podium slab consisting of exposed concrete delineates its former contours. The outlines of the steel trees and the new building correspond to the previous volume and its hipped roof. Jahrzehntelang war das Innenhofgrundstück des Vorderhauses in der Düsseldorfer Innenstadt mit niedrigen Schuppen bebaut. Jetzt füllt der viergeschossige Neubau mit zwölf bezahlbaren Mietwohnungen die Parzelle über die gesamte Breite aus. Die Architekten setzten das Bauvolumen in die Mitte des Grundstücks, sodass zwei begrünte Außenräume entstanden. Der erste Hinterhof wertet durch seine Begrünung die Wohnungen der bestehenden Blockrandbebauung auf und wird durch die Nordfassade des Neubaus gefasst. Unterschiedlich große, versetzt angeordnete Lochfenster überspielen die horizontale Gliederung der Geschossdecken und erzeugen ein informelles Erscheinungsbild. Die beiden Hauseingänge im Erdgeschoss führen zu zwei nebeneinander liegenden barrierefreien Wohnungen im Erdgeschoss mit eigenem Garten im zweiten Hinterhof. Nach Süden zeigt der schlichte Quader mit einer vorgestellten schachbrettartigen Loggienfassade seine klare innere
For decades, the courtyard of a block in the urban centre of Düsseldorf was occupied by low sheds. They were replaced by a new, four storey structure with twelve affordable rental housing units, expanding across the entire width of the lot. The architects placed the building in the middle of the property, creating two green backyards. The first one contributes to the quality of the apartments of the existing block border and is delineated by the northern facade of the new building. Differently dimensioned and offset window openings add a layer of complexity to the horizontal floor slab structure and create an informal impression. The two ground floor building entrances lead residents to the two barrier free apartments placed side by side, each featuring their own garden in the second backyard. On the southern side, the simple rectangular volume with its tessellated loggia facade reveals its clear interior organisation. The geometrically strict building

Raumaufteilung. Der streng geometrische Baukörper überragt das Gewirr der benachbarten eingeschossigen Gewerbehallen. So wird der Wohnungsbau zum Orientierungspunkt und ordnenden Element für den gesamten Innenhof. Die Reduktion auf die Materialien Sichtbeton und Holz unterstreicht die ruhige Ausstrahlung. Geschosshohe, konisch perforierte Sichtschutzelemente aus Betonfertigteilen dienen als wirkungsvoller Sichtund Sonnenschutz für die Loggien sowie die Wohnräume hinter den transparenten Ganzglasfassaden. Trotz hoher Dichte und der innenstädtischen Lage verfügen die Wohnungen über eine ausreichende Privatsphäre. Aus Kostengründen hat das Haus keinen Keller. Der Technikraum ist auf der Nordseite im dritten Obergeschoss untergebracht, nebenan kann ein Studiozimmer unabhängig vermietet werden. Limiting the materials selection to exposed concrete and timber reinforces the calm radiance of the volume. The floor to floor height screens consist of prefabricated concrete elements with conical perforation. They protect the loggias and the living spaces behind the transparent fully glazed facades from views and the sun. As a result, the apartments offer sufficient degrees of privacy, despite the high density inner city location. Due to cost concerns, a basement was omitted. The room for building utilities is located on the northern side on the third floor. Next to it, a studio apartment can be rented independently. The building with its uniform appearance hence demonstrates a differentiated range of different available apartment types. FK

Für Austrotherm Uniplatten hat die Säurefliesner-Vereinigung jetzt das allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Prüfzeugnis für die Anwendung als Abdichtung in der bauaufsichtlich relevanten Beanspruchungsklasse A mit den Wassereinwirkungsklassen W0-I bis W2-I erteilt. Die Prüfungen bestätigten auch, dass die Uniplatten in sich dicht sind und eine Abdichtung der Flächen außerhalb der Stoßfugen im genannten Anwendungsbereich der Wassereinwirkung nicht notwendig ist. Die Platten aus extrudiertem Polystyrol-Hartschaum sind beidseitig mit einer mit Textilglasgitter armierten Spezialbeschichtung versehen. The Aluminium Blind Zip Design Screen (AB ZDS) solar protection system from Schüco can be positioned on the outside of the company’s ASE/AS sliding systems. With its textile fabric it reflects up to 70 percent of the sun’s rays, but is barely visible when open. The zip technology in the side guide rails works like a zipper – the solar protection remains stable even at wind speeds of 25 m/s. The width of the rails is usually identical to that of the underlying profile of the ASE/AS aluminium sliding doors. With particularly large-
format sliding systems, an additional double guide rail enables multi-part solar protection elements with a total width of up to 18 m. The incidence of light can be customised by selecting the textile fabric, which, depending on the type, provides good glare and privacy control (0 % fabric openness) or transparency (10 % fabric openness). The system has a 230 V drive and can also be controlled via smartphone or tablet. AB ZDS is compatible with the ASE 60/80.HI, ASE 67 and AS PD 75.HI sliding systems.

Dämmelemente mit DIBt-Zulassung Insulation Elements with DIBt Approval Mit Schöck Sconnex lassen sich Wärmebrücken an Wänden und Stützen reduziert und die Dämmebene durchgängig gestalten. Mit Sconnex kann auf den Einsatz einer Flankendämmung verzichtet werden, Wände und schlanke Stützen lassen sich so auch in Sichtbeton ausführen. Anspruchsvolle Gebäude-Geometrien werden konstruktiv einfach und energetisch effizient umsetzbar. Der Hersteller erwähnt weitere Vorteile wie den zusätzlichen Raumgewinn und die sinkende Reparaturanfälligkeit durch beschädigtes Dämmmaterial. Insbesondere bei Außenstützen sowie in Tiefgaragen und Unterfahrungen sei dies ein echter Mehrwert. Für das tragende Wärmedämmelement Sconnex Typ W für Stahlbetonwände hat das Deutsche Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) kürzlich die Zulassung erteilt.

Im November 2023 eröffnete die Kindertagesstätte St. Martin in Bramsche, die die Hüdepohl und Ferner Architektur- und Ingenieurgesellschaft geplant hat. Ins Auge fallen 99 schmale bodentiefe Fenster und Türen. Für letztere ist gemäß DIN 18040-1 eine Schwellenhöhe von maximal 2 cm zulässig. Während die Fenster mit einem normalen Blendrahmen-Profil ausgeführt wurden, fiel die Abdichtung der Türen in die Rubrik baulicher Sonderfall. Eine weitere Herausforderung war die niedrige seitliche Anschlussbreite von 35 mm. Zudem musste das Material einen sicheren Haftverbund an den unterschiedlichen Baustoffen eingehen. Gelöst wurden alle Anforderungen mittels der Flüssigabdichtung Triflex ProDetail auf Basis von Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA). Laut Hersteller Triflex haftet das Abdichtungssystem auf verschiedenen Untergründen vollflächig und dauerhaft und ist zudem mit einer Anschlussbreite von nur 3 cm vom ift Rosenheim geprüft. zWULÁH[ FRP
In November 2023, the St. Martin Daycare Centre, planned by Hüdepohl und Ferner, opened in Bramsche. 99 narrow, floor-toceiling windows and doors immediately catch the eye. For the latter, a maximum threshold height of 2 cm is permissible according to DIN 18040-1. While the windows were designed with a normal frame profile, the sealing of the doors posed a special structural case. Another chal-
lenge was the low lateral connection width of 35 mm. In addition, the material had to form a secure bond with the various building materials. All these requirements were met using Triflex ProDetail liquid waterproofing based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). According to the manufacturer Triflex, the waterproofing system adheres to various substrates over the entire surface and is also tested by ift Rosenheim with a connection width of just 3 cm.
