Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin
A Letter From the 2017 Chairman
Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin will host the 2017 Salmon-A-Rama (SAR) Fishing Tournament July 15-23. This year’s event includes nine days of entertainment for the whole family. Salmon-A-Rama is a tournament open to all anglers fishing on Lake Michigan. The Grand Prize is $25,000 cash for the largest fish caught and an additional $70,000 in cash and prizes in several categories. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Lake Michigan Fishery for future generations to enjoy. In 2016, just under 4,000 contestants registered, making SAR one of the largest freshwater salmon and trout tournaments in the world! The tournament covers all of Lake Michigan, with 13 weigh-in ports spanning the western and eastern coasts of Lake Michigan for all anglers to weigh in their catches. (See page 17 for the Weigh In Station map) This year the event will be headquartered at Pershing Park in Racine, WI, and will kick off Friday, July 14th with the second annual Smelt Fry and an evening of live entertainment. The nine day tournament will host a variety of entertainment for all ages, from comedy acts to Rock-n-Roll bands. See the complete list of events on page 21. Be sure to check the Salmon-A-Rama website for updates and details: salmon-a-rama.com. Also, please share our Facebook page with your fishing buddies for up-to-date Salmon-A-Rama news. This event would not be possible without the hard work, time, dedication, and talents of the Salmon-A-Rama Committee who have volunteered countless hours away from their families to ensure a successful event. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsors who have donated some amazing prizes to be raffled on the final day of the tournament. Bring the whole family out for the celebration! There will be activities for every age, including famous SAR Raffle. This one-of-akind raffle includes tens of thousands of dollars worth of prizes, and is open to all participants who purchase a Salmon-A-Rama ticket. Give-a-ways will include the Large Raffle, Contest Awards, a Large Cash Raffle, and the Peanut Raffle for the Grand Prize— a G3 boat with a Yamaha outboard motor and trailer, sponsored by JNT’s Marine. For details, see page 21, or visit salmon-a-rama.com. Salmon-A-Rama is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends on the lake and on shore, creating memories that will last forever, and fishing in one of the world’s largest freshwater Salmon tournaments could result in a $25,000 payday. Good luck to all!

2017
BY ERIC HOFFMAN, 2017 GRAND PRIZE WINNER
Fishing has always been a part of my life, ever since I was a little boy. Feeling blessed growing up on the shores of Lake Michigan, I could just walk out my back door and step out on to my favorite flat rock on the small, man-made jetty that helped protect our shoreline and cast for Trout and Salmon whenever I felt the conditions were favorable. This is where I developed my love of this Lake!
Racine being my hometown, everyone knew about Salmon-A-Rama. My friends and I would hang out at the festival every year, we had many a great times enjoying the entertainment, beer, and of course the famous Optimists Cheese Fries, that I wish would come back. But my favorite place at the festival was to check out the “Big Cooler.” I would gaze through the glass at the current leader and just try to imagine what it must have been like to land such a behemoth, and think about the excitement that must have been rushing through every vein in their body, not knowing that someday, I would be on the other end of the line of the winning fish!
ERIC, PICTURED WITH HIS FRIEND, BOB WEIDMAN, AND HIS PRIZE CHECK
Though I have fished my whole life I had never entered the contest before. It wasn’t until a family friend, Bob Weidman, of Racine offered to take me fishing on his boat the “Lula Mae III.” 8

That day on the lake was picture perfect, he and his son Matt helped me learn some of the basics, as I didn’t have much experience with this type of fishing. By the end of the day we had our limit. After a couple times going out and getting our limits, Bob asked me if I would be interested in entering the contest with him and his crew, I didn’t hesitate, and told him I would be honored to. This set the stage for what would become the most memorable time of my Life! Being the “New Guy” on Bob’s boat, did have its advantages, it seems I had many more opportunities to catch more fish, as some of the old timers found it more entertaining to watch me real in fish from 300 yards out, that can be a real workout on the arms, but I loved every minute of it! I did learn that fishing on a boat is a lot different from fishing from shore, it actually takes team work on a boat, you might compare it to an auto racing pit crew, where every man on the boat has job to do when trying to land a big fish. It’s definitely not a one man show! There is nothing better than fishing with a group of guys, where the atmosphere is light hearted,
and jokes and one liners help break up the time between hookups, and the feeling of comradery and team work make it something that I’m going to look forward to every year for the rest of my life! Special Thanks to the crew; Bob Weidman (Captain), Matt Weidman (1st Mate), Andy Tschumpet, and Joe Miller. I could not have landed that winning fish without them! It goes to show that even if you do not have the experience, or have never entered the contest before, you could possibly end up a Winner! I want to graciously thank Salmon-A-Rama for hosting such an awesome contest, and all the Sponsors that contributed toward making this a world class event!

CASH-REWARDS
FOR FISH CAUGHT ON SPIN-N-GLO, FISH FLASH AND MAG LIP BY JIM LAFORTUNE Yakima Bait® is a major sponsor for the 2017 SalmonA-Rama fishing tournament. Anglers who fish the Great Lakes depend on their favorite lures to successfully catch fish. This has made Yakima Bait a popular name among amateurs and professional fishers alike. In addition to Mag Lip®, Spin-N-Glo® and Fish Flash® the company makes FlatFish®, Lil Corky® egg imitation bait floater, and Rooster Tail®. This year, four (4) lucky winners will earn extra cash if their winning fish is caught on Mag Lip, SpinN-Glo, Fish Flash or combination of Fish Flash with these top producing lures.
$1,000 “Yakima Bait Rewards Program” will pay $250 for largest tournament fish caught while using a Big Al’s Fish Flash, $250 for largest fish caught on Mag Lip, $250 for largest fish caught on Spin N Glo, $250 for largest fish caught while trolling Fish Flash in combination with Mag Lip or Spin N Glo. (Cash prizes awarded separately – same winner cannot win more than once; fishing success photo with product shown required to win.)
Big Al’s FISH FLASH: The Big Al’s Fish Flash is designed to produce horizontal, strobe-like flashes of light that draw fish in as it’s pulled through the water column and does so without the drag associated with other flasher/fish attractor styles. The unique shape of the Fish Flash means you can rig it in-line ahead of lures or bait, snap it directly to your divers, and its no-drag feature make it ideal for use in combination with wire-line or lead-core trolling. This flasher style is
most commonly used in combination with live bait, spoons or plugs. I found success rigging my lures 36-to-48 inches behind my Fish Flash. Try this proven combination and you could be taking home cash this year.
Mag Lip: The Mag Lip is a high-action, extra-deep-diving diving plug that produces a unique “skip-beat” action that teases fish into striking as it randomly darts to the side while being trolled. It’s available in five (5) sizes with 4.0 (4 inch) being the newest member of the Mag Lip family. While the Mag Lip will work when trolled on a flat line, many anglers (including me) have reported success when trolling the Mag Lip plug in combination with planer boards.
Enter to Win: An equal number of Spin-N-Glo and Mag Lip lures will be distributed free, on a first come/first serve basis, to anglers signing up for the 2017 Salmon-A-Rama tournament, so buy your tickets early to receive free product. In addition, Fish Flash, Spin-N-Glo and Mag Lip are available for sale at your local tackle dealer, so get your favorite colors early. To be eligible to win cash from Salmon-A-Rama/Yakima Bait your fish must be caught using Fish Flash, Spin-NGlo, Mag Lip, or combination of Fish Flash with these lures. Those who weigh-in a fish caught on Fish Flash, Mag Lip or Spin-N-Glo will receive a free hat (while supplies last) at each weigh in station.
GOOD LUCK!

Targeting Lake Trout on Lake Michigan m

BY BUZZ RAMSEY
ph
It’s no secret that Lake Trout have become the most numerous fish in Lake Michigan and you’re not going to consistently win tournaments without spending a majority of your tournament and pre-tournament days targeting them.
Although Lake Trout can position themselves throughout the water column; (for example, in mid-level temperature layers where the bait and other sport fish are found) they spend a large portion of their time on or near the bottom of the lake. The tendency for Lake Trout hug the bottom is especially true during the middle of the day when the sun is bright. Thinking your gear represent an easy meal, Lake Trout will quickly investigate flashers and lures trolled near bottom. In addition, these fish will positively respond to the stirring up of bottom sediments. It seems the more you can stir up the bottom by occasionally dragging (it’s really more
like skipping) your lures and/or occasionally bouncing your down-rigger ball on bottom the more Lake Trout you will catch. Some avid trollers targeting Lake Trout will extend a short length (18-to-24 inches) of chain or wire below their down-rigger ball to help draw these bottom-hugging fish into their gear. The reason for adding a short length of chain, such that it will scratch bottom occasionally while trolling, is that it will accomplish the goal of stirring up bottom sediment without jeopardizing the loss of your down-rigger weight. Keep in mind the technique of stirring up bottom sediment is best used when trolling over flat bottoms and not where bottom structure makes doing so difficult or impossible. Continued on page 19

Targeting Lake Trout on Lake Michigan Continued from page 14
Another method used to stir up bottom sediment is to employ a triangular shaped flasher, like a 6, 8 or 10 inch Fish Flash, which will stir up bottom sediment without hanging up or tripping from your down-rigger release. Try running near bottom, occasionally touching sandy bottoms, in combination with a 48-to-60 inch leader and spoon, spinner, Spin-N-Glo or spinning bait. You want your gear running fairly close, ten (10) feet behind the down-rigger ball, so it will be in or near the sediment cloud. An all-time-favorite trolling combination used by anglers wanting to target Lake Trout is to rig a size 0, 2, or 4 size Spin-N-Glo in combination with a size 0 or 1 dodger. The dodger’s side-to-side swaying motion adds additional action to the already lively Spin-N-Glo and is the go-to combination for many charter operators and avid anglers that target Lake Trout. Most rig their Spin-N-Glo 24-to-30
inches behind their dodger. It’s important to place a few plastic beads between your Spin-N-Glo and hook so this lure will spin freely. Some of the more productive Spin-N-Glo colors for Lake Trout are Luminous Spot, Stop N Go, Luminous Green, California Watermelon, and Red Hot Tiger. These finishes are now available with glow-in-the-dark wings. So, in addition to the phosphorescent bodies the wings also glow. To see them visit www.yakimabait.com or ask your local dealer. And it’s not just dodgers that are used in combination with Spin-N-Glo, take last year’s Salmon-A-Rama “Yakima Bait Rewards Program” winner who trolled a Spin-N-Glo in combination with Fish Flash to take home real money – it could be you this year.

Reflections from a Captain BY CAPTAIN JIM MUELLER
Seemed like only yesterday we were setting lines in our first Salmon-A-Rama but in reality it was 1988. Acknowledging that many others have been fishing Salmon-A-Rama much longer than I, “Stormtrooper” has called Reefpoint Marina home since its opening in 1987. Over the years listening to all the theories on how to catch the ‘big one’, when in reality it comes down to just some lucky fishing. Many boats would make the long travel to Washington Island when Kings were Kings and many would drag their boats through Chicago traffic in the days of Indiana’s Skamania Steelhead runs, or in our theory of rallying the troops at 3:00 a.m. believing we would could catch the ‘big one’ before sun rise. It seemed to be a popular thought as we motored out; Racine’s coastline was lite up with boats as well as the shore line. Many would fish through the night, how challenging that was. An early rise for morning fishing seemed to blend right into afternoon fishing and then until dark where we would then go onto the SalmonA-Rama grounds for some grub, spirits and live music. We had a lot of fun. Of course, that goes without mentioning cleaning fish, scrubbing the deck and it seemed like always one boat in the fleet needed some mechanical work. How we managed nine straight days in pursuit of the ‘big one’ is beyond me. What I can say is I could not wait to return to work on Monday for some much needed rest after vacation. Salmon-A-Rama and Lake Michigan sure has had some challenges along the way for us. Some that come to mind, BKD when at times there were no salmon around to catch. Options were to fish the Lake Trout that were stacked up like cord wood out on the hills in the old days. After coolers filled quickly with Trout we would move to the harbor front and work on the Skamania steelhead run with an occasional Brown trout or we would move offshore for fishing the Chub nets in 350 foot of water and 22

beyond. Many times action was fast for the anglers willing to make the journey. For many year’s we thought there would not be another Salmon-A-Rama but many times Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin, armed with volunteers, would answer the call. There have been some great memories along the way that we all have created during Salmon-A-Rama. For me it was always a tradition that my long time duck hunting buddies would come in from Indiana to share in a good time. There were many times we never had a good fish to weigh in but that never stopped us from coming back year after year. As for many of you share traditions of your own, like families coming in from many states across America or deer camp friends making the journey in pursuit of that ‘big one’. I thank God for my son and the great memories of being able to fish the two man with him and for the friends that have fished with us along the way and the ones that are no longer with us. In parting, if you noticed, that I have never mentioned catching the ‘big fish’ and tournament winnings as top priority because it is not what makes Salmon-A-Rama. It is the traditions made along the way, family, great friends and God. Happy fishing and God bless from Captain Jim and crew!

Salmon-A-Rama is a proud supporter of
Cancer. The word strikes fear in everyone’s heart; but for the ones who hear it in a doctor’s office, the fear is not only for their health, but also for their family, their job, their everything. Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care about your age, your gender or how much money you make, and the results it has on lives are devastating. January 8, 2015 my husband, Steve Koss, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The weeks that followed were filled with sleepless nights and days of endless appointments and procedures. By June, the cancer was winning, progressing to Stage 4. That August, family and friends held a benefit to help us financially. Cancer had robbed us of the stability of successful careers. We were overwhelmed that over 900 people attended. My husband’s tear-filled speech thanking everyone convinced me that I had to pay it forward. No one should have to choose between treatment or rent, treatment or groceries, treatment or utilities. No one should fear losing their home or car when they fear losing their life. Hospitals have programs to help with medical expenses, but it’s the daily expenses that become the burden. The Koss Family Foundation’s goal is to help those fighting this disease maintain their financial quality of life so they can focus on recovery and treatment. Salmon Unlimited has been a KossFF supporter from the beginning. With this type of community involvement, we are on track to meet our goal of helping 10 families in 2017. We are honored to be a part of Salmon A Rama 2017.
