format

does

not

compliment

their

experience, grammar and punctuation are a big issue, and under-explained job descriptions plague most resumes. I would be more than happy to accept a 10All job seekers struggle with writing a winning resume to grab the attention of hiring employers. What to say? What not to say? What is relevant information about your jobs? It is never easy, especially when all career coaching experts have a different viewpoint on hiring, and it is just a confusing mess of information to regular people just trying to get hired. I have understood complete for years; my mission has been to simplify the job search process for job seekers – determined to make sense of the job requirements and the complexity of group interviews is beyond frustrating in my mindset. However, I understand that hiring the wrong employee can cost a company millions of dollars, and job seekers have to be willing and able to introduce their skills in the most qualifying format to appear as the best candidate.

WORD RESUME from a potential candidate; assuming you used ten perfectly selected words to explain your skills and experience; that might save me two minutes of browsing the wrong resumes. Nothing is more frustrating to a recruiter than receiving a resume for a General Labor position only to read the entire resume to discover the candidate is a mechanical engineer – well, I will just be donuts. JobFairGiant.com has launched a challenge for all job seekers to announce their Career Field, Experience, and Skills using ten words. The purpose is to make a straightforward introduction to hiring companies; if you do not know who you are as a candidate, how can you apply for the right jobs. For years, I have told job seekers to tailor their resumes to the company's needs, rewrite their resume based on the job description requirements – for the sake of being positive in this sentence. Although most employers know it is inappropriate to ask certain interview questions, it still occurs at times. If you are asked an illegal question during an interview, you have three options for responding. These include: 1. Answer the question directly, if you feel it will not harm your chance of being hired. 2. Refuse to answer the question outright or direct the conversation in a different direction. 3. Examine the intent of the question, and base your response on the requirements of the position. QUALIFICATIONS:

As a field technician with MCC you will provide operations and maintenance services for landfill gas collection systems, in order that they maintain maximum efficiency and compliant operation. Position requires routine on-site monitoring of system operations for compliance deadline and contractual requirements, as well as troubleshooting and diagnostics of system malfunctions. Technician will provide documentation of daily activities via electronic data transfers. You will be required to use motor coordination for a majority of the workday and exert physical effort to lift 50 pounds or less on a regular basis. Additionally, the use of personal protective equipment (safety boots, safety glasses, safety vest and personal gas monitoring equipment) is required for daily activities. Daily work will be independent in nature and require communication with supervisors and clients to ensure project success. Due to the nature of the collection systems, response to after-hours call outs (rotating schedule) is required.

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record; • Ability to pass pre-employment, as well as random, drug screens, background check and motor vehicle records check; • Basic computer skills including use of Windows and Windows Office software; • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude, including the proficient and safe use of hand tools; • Ability to operate all-terrain vehicle in varying conditions; • Ability to speak and write professionally; • Ability to work outdoors in all environments for extended periods of time; • Ability to perform the physical requirement of the position; • Organized self-starter with initiative; • Moderate travel required; • Ability to work safely. How to Tactfully Answer Illegal or Improper Interview Questions It’s tough enough to prepare for difficult job-related questions. Dealing with those that are inappropriate is even tougher. When faced with an illegal question during an interview, you have several choices: 1) You can refuse to answer, telling the employer you think it is improper. However, this option may disqualify you from further consideration. 2) You can answer the question as stated, forgoing your privacy and possibly making you feel uncomfortable. 3) You can answer the inappropriate interview question by addressing the legitimate concern behind the question that can often be inferred (why it was asked), rather than becoming hostile or defensive. For example, if you are asked “What is your native language?” the response could be “I can fluently speak, read, and write English and Japanese.” Let’s take a look at some examples of legal vs. illegal interview questions:

A skills-based résumé is a document that lists a person’s job qualifications in skill categories, rather than the standard approach of using reverse chronological work experience categories. You should consider using a skills-based résumé if it would help you present yourself to potential employers in a more powerful way than a chronological résumé would. Skills-based Résumé (functional approach)

HOW SHOULD A SKILLS-BASED RÉSUMÉ BE FORMATTED? To determine the best way to format your skills-based résumé, consider what your audience is looking for and also your specific situation. The bottom line is to arrange your résumé in a way that will help your reader assess what you have to offer them in the quickest, easiest, and most powerful way possible. The example above illustrates what is typically called a functional skills-based approach. It includes multiple skills sections with bulleted content that proves competencies or proficiencies with the respective skills. Notice that the employment details such as the job title, company name, location, and dates of employment are not included in these sections. Instead, this information is often included in a separate section toward the latter part of the document, as shown in the following samples.

Note: In the sample below, the applicant has used what is often called the ‘bare bones’ approach of including the bare minimum employer information (job title, company name, location, and date).

De-emphasizing employment information allows you to show your most relevant skills and abilities without bringing attention to employment gaps, frequent job changes, terminations, atypical professional background, etc. Some drawbacks of using this method, however, are that this format may be a deterrent to potential employers who prefer chronological résumé styles*, since chronological résumés are the most widely used. In addition, it may not be clear and easy for your potential employer to assess what you accomplished at each previous job. *This drawback does not apply to those whose industries require a skills-based résumé and may not necessarily apply to industries that are flexible with their résumé formats.


4 If you are concerned about these drawbacks, but still feel that the skills-based approach will allow you to present yourself most effectively to potential employers, you may want to consider the combination (or hybrid) skills-based résumé approach. This will enable you to draw from the strengths of both the chronological and functional styles. As shown in the following example, you can create skills-based sections and include employment information within that section. If you decide to use this method, make sure to avoid being redundant across your skills sections. For example, although it could be appropriate and powerful to include the same work experience in multiple categories, it would be redundant and count against you to copy and paste the same bullet in multiple categories.
