experience, grammar and punctuation are a big issue, and under-explained job descriptions plague most resumes. I would be more than happy to accept a 10All job seekers struggle with writing a winning resume to grab the attention of hiring employers. What to say? What not to say? What is relevant information about your jobs? It is never easy, especially when all career coaching experts have a different viewpoint on hiring, and it is just a confusing mess of information to regular people just trying to get hired. I have understood complete for years; my mission has been to simplify the job search process for job seekers – determined to make sense of the job requirements and the complexity of group interviews is beyond frustrating in my mindset. However, I understand that hiring the wrong employee can cost a company millions of dollars, and job seekers have to be willing and able to introduce their skills in the most qualifying format to appear as the best candidate.

WORD RESUME from a potential candidate; assuming you used ten perfectly selected words to explain your skills and experience; that might save me two minutes of browsing the wrong resumes. Nothing is more frustrating to a recruiter than receiving a resume for a General Labor position only to read the entire resume to discover the candidate is a mechanical engineer – well, I will just be donuts. JobFairGiant.com has launched a challenge for all job seekers to announce their Career Field, Experience, and Skills using ten words. The purpose is to make a straightforward introduction to hiring companies; if you do not know who you are as a candidate, how can you apply for the right jobs. For years, I have told job seekers to tailor their resumes to the company's needs, rewrite their resume based on the job description requirements – for the sake of being positive in this sentence. I will assume that writer's block is the reason why my suggestion is ignored. The point is to give recruiters ten powerful words and spark the attention of hiring recruiters.

Be sure if you have several years of experience to provide the required number of years to help prevent age discrimination. Frequently, many employers assume overqualified candidates want more money or have outdated skillsets when in actuality, many current job seekers have retrained, and retirees have returned to the workforce seeking supplemental income. Self-Esteem Fact Sheet Self-Esteem Defined Self-esteem is a concept that is defined differently by experts. One definition found in the dictionary states, "self-esteem is a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself." Some experts view self-esteem more broadly. According to the National Network for Child Care, a widely accepted definition of self-esteem comes from Dr. Nathaniel Branden, a psychotherapist. Dr. Branden defines self-esteem as "the experience of being competent to cope with the basic challenges of life and of being worthy of happiness." Dr. Branden contends that self-esteem is composed of two components: 1. Self-efficacy - confidence in one's ability to think, learn, choose, and make appropriate decisions; and 2. Self-respect - confidence in one's right to be happy and in the belief that achievement, success, friendship, respect, love, and fulfillment are appropriate to us (Branden, 2006). It is important to note that although the terms self-esteem and self-concept have been used interchangeably by some individuals, experts view the terms as different. Dr. Judith Myers-Walls of Purdue University says, "Self-concept can be seen as an overall term that includes all ideas a person has about him/herself." Dr. Myers-Walls explains that the self-concept can be seen as having four components: 1. Self-image - the way a person describes him/herself and the groups to which a person feels s/he belongs. 2. Self-esteem - the value a person gives to those characteristics or how a person evaluates the selfimage. 3. Self-efficacy - the amount of influence a person feels s/he has over the things in his/her environment or the power a person feels s/he has over what happens to him/her. 4. Social-identity - how a person feels society and others around him/her feel about people in the categories into which that person falls.

Traits of Healthy Self-Esteem Here are some traits youth with a healthy self-esteem may exhibit: 1. They are more likely to take positive risks - they know they might fail, but they also know they might succeed. 2. They are less likely to take negative risks - they respect themselves and avoid dangerous situations. 3. They are more likely to resist negative peer pressure. 4. They are less likely to go along with the crowd just to fit in. 5. They are strong and can cope with the changes and challenges of life.

They do not feel confident enough to explore their creativity. 9. They have a negative attitude toward life.

Ways to Build Healthy Self-Esteem Here are some practical ways to build a child's self-esteem: 1. Let them know they are loved and appreciated. 2. Respect their feelings and abilities. 3. Spend time with them. 4. Praise their effort. 5. Provide them with opportunities for success. 6. Accept them as they are. 7. Allow them to make meaningful decisions. 8. Focus on what they do right. 9. Discipline in a positive way. 10. Help them cope with occasional negative feedback and frustrations. 11. Model healthy self-esteem for them. 12. Encourage their curiosity.

Things to Avoid Here are some things to avoid: 1. Expecting too much or too little. 2. Excessive and harsh criticism, especially in front of other people. 3. Not allowing children to make mistakes. 4. Trying to make them somebody else and not honoring their uniqueness.

Self-esteem is our sense of self-worth. It is how we view and judge ourselves. When we have healthy self-esteem we accept ourselves and know that we are worthy, valuable, likeable or loveable. Selfesteem is not determined by our abilities – that's called self-confidence. For example, someone may know that they are capable or that they have certain skills, but they may still not feel worthy and valuable. The following ideas are some ways we can nourish a positive self-esteem. Identify and challenge your Inner Critic First of all be an observer of your thoughts or self-talk. Identify what you say about yourself and the things you do. Are you critical, judgemental and/or expect yourself to be perfect? Do you give yourself lots of ‘shoulds’ (I should be nice to people all the time) or ‘musts’? (I must get a distinction for this assignment). Do you label yourself in derogatory ways? (I'm stupid/ugly/not good enough)? Do you use extreme words like ‘never’ (I'll never get anywhere in life) and ‘always’? (I always goof up). Be non judgemental as you identify your Inner Critic and make a commitment to yourself that you will change the ways you think about yourself as this is an important key to enhancing your self esteem. Keep a record of negative self-talk and practise confronting it. Use the following headings at the top of 6 columns on a page: 1. Event/Situation; 2. What I say to myself; 3. How I feel; 4. How helpful is this self-talk and how realistic is this self-talk?; 5. What is more realistic and helpful self-talk that I could give myself?; 6. How I feel when I hear more helpful and realistic self-talk.

Replace your Inner Critic with an Inner Supporter As you learn to identify your Inner Critic, experiment with ways to block and silence it. Some people find a phrase they can use to silence it like ‘get off my back’ or ‘stop it – that's poison’. Some people imagine they can shrink their Inner Critic right down until it fits into a matchbox, or they can turn the volume down. Someone who supports you is someone who encourages you, nurtures you and cares for you. A supporter is also someone who helps you solve problems, someone who encourages you to think of lots of options, the pros and cons of each option and how to go about implementing a solution to your problem. It's great to have friends who are supportive, but you can also develop your own internal supporter.

At the end of each day write down the things you feel pleased about that you have done (I'm glad I talked to Jane at the bus stop), acknowledge positives in yourself and give an example (I'm caring – I listened to a friend who was feeling sad) and the things you appreciated about the day (the warmth of the sun, delicious food, interesting lectures). If you find this difficult, start with one thing on the first day, two on the second and build up at your own pace.

What is self-esteem?


Treat yourself like a best friend This includes how you talk to yourself about yourself and how you behave. For example, if your friend was feeling down you would not tell them that they are stupid, nor would you lock them away and not let them do things that would help them feel better. You would listen to them, support them and help them to think of something that might make them feel better. You might also say ‘It's OK to feel sad/angry/ fearful’ and not make them feel bad because they have feelings. Set realistic goals Work out what is important to you. What are your goals in life? Think about your long-term goals (write yourself a letter from the future saying what you have achieved), medium term goals (what do I want to achieve for myself over the next semester/month or even the next week) and short-term goals. When thinking about a short term goal, ask yourself: ‘What do I want to do TODAY that will lead me to feeling good about myself and in control of my life?’ or ‘What do I want to achieve in this study session?’ Writing down your goals is a great motivator and guide to achieve what is important to you. Time for self care Care for and nurture yourself each day, especially if you are going through a difficult period. Try the following: take a long warm bath; play your favourite music; watch a funny film; spend time with a friend; look at, feel and smell a flower; try a new food; learn about another culture; stand on fresh grass in bare feet; stand in the rain and laugh; sit in sunshine with a cuppa; hold a stone in your hand and feel the surface. When you do these things, watch out for your Inner Critic who might say you don't deserve this. You do! Create your own powerful affirmations Affirmations are powerful antidotes to negative self-talk and your Inner Critic. Create them in the first person, present tense and in the most positive way you can. For example ‘I am a worthwhile person’ or ‘I am capable’. Write them down and/or repeat them to yourself many times a day. Rather than dwelling on the negatives, think about things, events, people, conversations in the past, present and the future that remind you of your strengths, your worth as a person and the things you enjoy. Conclusion Self-esteem is essential to our psychological well-being. If you find it difficult to nourish your self-esteem you may find it beneficial to talk to a Counsellor. WRITING A GOOD RESUME The most basic principle of good resume formatting and design? Keep it simple. Use a basic but modern font, like Helvetica, Arial, or Century Gothic. Make your resume easy on hiring managers’ eyes by using a font size between 10 and 12 and leaving a healthy amount of white space on the page. You can use a different font or typeface for your name, your resume headers, and the companies for which you’ve worked, but keep it simple and keep it consistent. No matter what resume format you choose, your main focus here should be on readability for the hiring manager.

CAREER FAIRS WORK… FOR CANDIDATES Don’t Be Shy. This is your chance to shine. As you approach each employer table, be friendly, be confident, and be prepared with something to say. Introduce yourself with a smile, eye contact, and a brief, firm handshake. Often, the recruiter will take the lead and ask you questions, but you should also have your elevator pitch ready—a 30-second soundbite of what you want the company to know about you. (Here’s how to craft one if you’re unsure.) To really use your time wisely, you should be able to concisely convey why you’re interested in the particular company and how your skills or qualifications suit the position. But at the same time—don’t go too fast! Job seekers have a tendency to speak quickly, which comes across as rushed or nervous. You want to speak slowly and with interest. Follow-up is important; do not drop off your resume and forget to follow up. Seriously, that is a waste of a good career fair.

low self-esteem? What is Self-Esteem? As human beings, we tend to place a value or a measure of worth to ourselves or aspects of ourselves. So, self-esteem usually refers to how we view and think about ourselves and the value that we place on ourselves as a person. If the value we place on ourselves is often negative, this is when we run into problems with self esteem.

Low Self-Esteem Have you ever been dissatisfied or unhappy with yourself on the whole? Do you ever think that you are weak, stupid, not good enough, flawed in some way, inferior to other people, useless, worthless, unattractive, ugly, unlovable, a loser, or a failure? Everyone uses these words on themselves at times, usually when they experience a challenging or stressful situation. However, if you often think about yourself in these terms, then you might have a problem with low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem is having a generally negative overall opinion of oneself, judging or evaluating oneself negatively, and placing a general negative value on oneself as a person. People with low self-esteem usually have deep-seated, basic, negative beliefs about themselves and the kind of person they are. These beliefs are often taken as facts or truths about their identity, rather than being recognised as opinions they hold about themselves.

The Impact of Low Self-Esteem Frequent Self-Criticism. A person with low selfesteem probably says a lot of negative things about themselves. They might criticise themselves, their actions, and abilities or joke about themselves in a very negative way. They might put themselves down, doubt themselves, or blame themselves when things go wrong. Ignoring Positive Qualities. When compliments are given to them, they might brush such comments aside or say that “it was all luck” or “it wasn’t that big a deal.” Instead, they might focus on what they didn’t do or the mistakes they made.

Negative Emotions. A person with low self-esteem might often feel sad, depressed, anxious, guilty, ashamed, frustrated, and angry. Impact on Work/Study. A person with low self esteem might consistently achieve less than they are able to because they believe they are less capable than others. They might avoid challenges & opportunities for fear of not doing well. They might work extremely hard and push themselves to do more because they believe they need to make up for, or cover up, their lack of skill. They might find it hard to believe any good results they get are due to their own abilities or positive qualities. Relationship Problems. In their personal relationships, people with low self-esteem might become upset or distressed by any criticism or disapproval, bend over backwards to please others, be extremely shy or self-consciousness or even avoid or withdraw from intimacy or social contact. They might also be less likely to stand up for themselves or protect themselves from being bullied, criticised, or abused by partners or family. On the other hand they can be overly aggressive in their interactions with others. Recreation and Leisure. People with low self-esteem might not engage in many leisure or recreational activities, as they might believe that they do not deserve any pleasure or fun. They might also avoid activities where they could be judged or evaluated in some way, such as competitive sports, dancing, art/craft classes or participating in any type of competition or exhibition. Personal Self-Care. People who do not value themselves might drink excessive amounts of alcohol or abuse drugs. They might not bother to dress neatly, wear clean clothes, style their hair or buy new clothes. On the other hand, they might try to hide any inadequacies by not allowing themselves to be seen by others unless they look absolutely perfect.

Cause or Effect? It is important to know that low self esteem is a common problem for many people in our society - so you are not alone. Low self-esteem can occur as part of a current problem (such as depression), or as a result of other problems (such as chronic illness, relationship problems) or it can be a problem in itself. Either way, the good news is that you can take steps towards developing more healthy self-esteem.

 Select appropriate parts to load into welding fixture or cells.  Clamp work pieces into holding fixture on machine bed, or turntable.  Start machine, observe welding action, and examine weld for defects.  Label exhaust system or component, then load onto leak testing fixture.

Basic Qualification / Work Experience:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED).  Minimum three (3) months related experience and/or training in a production manufacturing environment preferred. nd

Hilo Driver (2 shift) Starting Rate: $18.00/hr

 Communicate material request in a timely manner  Coordinate repacking of empty totes  Remove all empty totes, boxes, and recyclables from each cell and properly locate  Responsible to follow procedures for the cleaning and maintenance of the tugger/cart and the HI Lo if used.

Basic Qualification / Work Experience:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED)  Minimum one months’ related experience in Material Handler setting.  Forklift Certification st

1 shift: 4:00am – 2:30pm nd 2 shift: 3:00pm – 1:30am (.50/hr shift differential) The plant runs Monday – Thursday, with overtime on Fridays and Saturdays.
