WINGED HARE TURNS 100 Fathered by a wood grouse and born to a hare. That’s a skvader! This year, Sundsvall’s unofficial official animal turns one hundred. This fantastical animal was supposed to have been shot in Lunde Forest, Timrå, back in 1874 by log driving inspector Håkan Dahlmark. He was never able to present his ‘trophy’ as proof, but he did later receive a painting depicting the so-called skvader. A hare and a wood grouse bought at Stora Torget in Sundsvall were combined into the unique crossbreed used as the subject of the painting. Before his death, Dahlmark donated the painting to Medelpad Ancient Monument Society, which ensured that a, erm, real model of the animal was stuffed and preserved for future generations. It can still be seen today in a display case at the open air museum Norra Berget. So why not visit to congratulate the centenarian! The museum is also planning centenary celebrations for 3 June.

Best kids pool Himlabadet in Sundsvall is Sweden’s best water park! When the real experts, and that means kids, had their say in Sweden’s Children’s Holiday Awards 2018, Himlabadet won gold in the category for Best Water Park. The awards have been arranged by website barnsemester.se for several years and centre manager Hasse Bergqvist is extremely proud of their accolade, which is an improvement over the silver they won in 2017. They faced stiff competition from runner-up Arena Skövde and bronze medallist Lost City in Gustavsvik, as well as from many other fun water parks throughout Sweden. “It’s really great that we won this award. ‘Sing-along at Tynderö’ returns this summer, following its premiere last year. The first sing-along, on July 11th, will feature accordion king Bengan Janson and Lars Ericson, one of Sweden’s best bass players. The featured performer on July 18th will be Lasse Berghagen, who’s perfectly suited to the job having been the presenter of the Swedish TV show ‘Sing-along at Skansen’ from 1994 to 2003. river Selångersån in the city centre. It came about after the municipality received an e-mail in 2011 from a 13-year-old skateboarder who wanted an outdoor park. Construction began two years later and Åparken was completed in 2014. The municipality estimates that the park attracts 400–500 visitors every day, from small children to veteran skateboarders. Alex Elfving from Sundsvall is studying the arts programme with a focus on skateboarding at Bryggeriet High School in Malmö. He spends much of his time in Åparken when he’s home in Sundsvall. “It’s a good park! I like skateboarding there. The Bowl is the best, and it’s pretty big,” he says. Alex will graduate this summer. “It was a dream come true for me to attend this high school. I’ve developed a lot, both socially and in my skateboarding. My plan is to move home after graduating, work a bit, then travel to Barcelona this winter.”

standing has been under way for as long as we’ve been able to call ourselves humans. And it still entices hundreds of millions of people to undertake pilgrimages around the world each year. But for many people there are attractions other than the historical and religious to keep their feet going, kilometre after kilometre. The hike is simply about being in the present, experiencing reality in an unhurried way; a way better suited to human sensibilities than the daily grind of non-stop sensory input that most of us otherwise endure. Maybe this is the biggest reason why hiking is increasing in popularity.

with an army of his own soldiers he made his way to Stiklestad in Norway to fight what was to become one of the most famous battles in Norwegian history. But instead of triumphantly retaking the throne, Olav was slain on 29 July. His body was buried near the battlefield. Not long after his death, rumours began circulating that the former king was actually a holy man. Seemingly inexplicable wonders were witnessed near his grave, which was eventually exhumed. When his body was found to be in as good a condition as when he died, with his hair and nails still growing, the matter was decided. Saint Olav was the first and perhaps most popular Nordic saint. When Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim was built, his remains were moved there.

MEET YOURSELF

Hiking offers a meditative calm conducive to an inner journey parallel to the physical one. Start your journey in Sundsvall, just like Olav Haraldsson once did. You’re sure to meet many others along the way. But mostly you’ll meet yourself on Europe’s northernmost hiking trail. Originally, Olav Haraldsson had completely different plans for his journey. He was born in 995 and in his youth was a successful Viking busy plundering Sweden, Denmark and even England, where he is said to have laid waste to London Bridge. After converting to Christianity, he left England to take the throne as king of Norway, full of his new convictions and apparently with the ambition to Christianise the country. Olav was clearly good at building infrastructure and churches, but not so good at loyalty and friendship. Displeasure with the king’s tyranny grew until Olav was forced to flee to Russia.

During his last summer in 1030, he landed at Selånger, which at the time was on Sundsvall’s coastline. With his sights set on a return to power in Norway and the continued Christianisation of the country, together

SAINT OLAV’S TRAIL, EUROPE’S NORTHERNMOST PILGRIMAGE The medieval pilgrimage Saint Olav’s Trail is 564 km long and runs from Selånger outside Sundsvall to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway. The trail was reopened in 2013 following extensive renovation work and stretches from coast to coast – from the Bothnian Sea to the Atlantic Ocean – through two countries and eleven municipalities. The trail is divided into five stages, each of which is divided into a number of sections. The first section is from Selånger to Matfors and covers 14 km.

HIKING BREAKS THE DAILY GRIND

Today, Saint Olav’s Trail stretches from Selånger to Nidaros Cathedral. Early pilgrims were attracted by the opportunity to drink water from the different springs along the way, which legend says appeared after Saint Olav hit the ground with his staff. You too can taste the refreshing spring water, perhaps at the most famous Saint Olav springs in Borgsjö and Pilgrimstad. Hikers who’ve swapped the daily grind for another grind, where the present and an inner dialogue are most important, have realised that true luxury has nothing to do with money. Here hikers will be able to get answers to all sorts of questions about the pilgrims trail, such as accommodation and attractions along

the trail. Anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge about the history of the trail and Selånger, as well as pilgrimage as a lifestyle, can visit the exhibitions. The centre will also house a café and conference facilities. Part of the centre will open on 17 June this year, but the formal inauguration will take place in 2021 when the City of Sundsvall celebrates 400 years.

PILGRIM CENTRE

You can walk in the footsteps of St Olav all the way from Selånger to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The St Olavsleden trail starts at the ruined church in Selånger. As far as possible, it follows the paths along which pilgrims walked and rode in days gone by, up the valley of the River Ljungan into Jämtland and then along Indalsälven and through the mountains on the border between Norway and Sweden. In Norway, the trail leads through farmland near Trondheim Fiord. It is a fairly easy walk because the St Olavsleden trail follows paths and old tracks and is not particularly hilly. We are continuing our five-Sunday tradition; a pilgrimage in five stages over five Sundays, starting in Selånger on 1st July. The pilgrimage will take us all the way from Selånger to Borgsjö. Central Sundsvall is experiencing a social upturn that’s boosting the entire city, and attracting more investors. “We want to make Sundsvall even more fun,” says Magnus Torstensson, owner of O’Learys, which is launching a new entertainment concept.

residents – and there’s good reason why so many restaurants boast sturdy outdoor seating. Sundsvall’s residents happen to like making the most of the sun.

FUN FOR EVERYONE

One of the most popular outdoor seating areas is the one at O’Learys, which enjoys the very last sunrays of the day. This year the restaurant has even invested in expanding indoors to offer a completely new entertainment concept, including a climbing wall, golf simulator, shuffleboard, pool table, and arcade and basketball games. “We truly believe in our stunning inner city, which is growing, thriving and becoming more dynamic every day. All the new housing being built in the harbour is a very positive development and we hope to see continued densification with even more apartments. The idea behind our new entertainment concept is that you shouldn’t need to leave town to find fun things for everyone to do,” says restaurant owner Magnus Torstensson. “It’s been tested in other locations, primarily O’Learys at Tele2 Arena and at Mall of Scandinavia by Friends Arena, where it’s been a success.”

THE MORE THE MERRIER

In Sundsvall, O’Learys is located at Olof Palmes torg, which has become a real restaurant mecca in recent years. “It’s great that so many different niches have been established here. Originally we were alone, but it’s turned into a cosy and homely square with many restaurants to choose from. There’s great interest in sport in Sundsvall, which means it can even get a little cramped in our spacious restaurant when particularly popular matches are screened here. GIF Sundsvall plays in the Swedish Premier League, and now that Timrå IK has entered the Swedish Hockey League we’re even busier, so the extension was well timed in many respects.”

The city’s rejuvenated restaurant scene has clearly struck a chord with all ages. At Zmak Deli & Restaurang, sounds of laughter will often draw your attention to parties with silver-streaked hair enjoying an extended lunch, commonly sharing good wine as well. Pinchos is popular with younger patrons for tasty appetisers in a cosy atmosphere. The fact is that the growing interest in dining out seems to have surpassed the interest in nightclubbing among the city’s younger residents. Jocke Sandström is a DJ at nightclub Oscar and has many years’ experience of the trends in Sundsvall’s nightlife. He says that the number of dancefloors has dropped, but that there are more bars employing DJs and troubadours. And if you’re in the mood for dancing into the early hours, there are two exceptional places to choose between: Oscar for the younger generation and E Street for the more mature. “Sure, there are fewer people going out to dance than, say, ten years ago, but there’s a good buzz at Oscar. Generally speaking, historically, when the economy’s been doing well, like now, we see a drop in interest in nightclubbing. Instead, people treat themselves to more expensive entertainment, such as fine dining, overseas travel and skiing holidays. But when money’s a little tighter in an economic downturn, the hometown dancefloors fill up again. Because going out dancing doesn’t need to cost much,” says Jocke.

FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT

Peter Eliasson, partner at E Street, considers the combination of the music restaurant’s many regular diners and continually busy dancefloors a clear sign that sociable Sundsvall residents appreciate good food and partying. He believes, quite simply, that the curiosity about new forms of entertainment among both residents and visitors is sufficiently large for the positive entertainment spiral to continue. “At E Street, we continually develop our business and aim for some kind of happening every night of the week. When we have our nightclub with live music on Fridays and Saturdays, there’s no doubt that Sundsvall’s residents love going out and socialising and really know how to enjoy themselves,” he says.

dering, densely stocked coast is a top choice for pike and perch, but there’s also a chance you’ll catch more prized game fish such as grayling, whitefish and, most of all, sea trout. Medelpad’s mighty waterways, the rivers Indalsälven and Ljungan, add to the well-stocked sea, with salmon, sea trout, whitefish and grayling migrating upstream to spawn and spread their genes. Sport fishing along the coast in Medelpad is free and doesn’t require a fishing permit. You can fish here all year round and catch different species, from both land and boat. Be aware, however, that there are closed zones where fishing is not permitted at the Ljungan’s coastal estuary and in Selångersån. The minimum sizes for sea fishing are: • salmon: 60 centimetres • trout: 40 centimetres • grayling: 30 centimetres • pike: 40–75 centimetres, maximum of three a day

SEA TROUT SPRING: Fishing for sea trout is good at certain times. During the spring, once the ice has begun to break, the hunt for sea trout begins and runs until the temperature in the water reaches 8–10 degrees and the bait fish leave the coastal waters. The season starts around 10 April and runs through May, stretching to the middle of June some years.

Autumn fishing starts again once the water temperature drops towards the autumn, around September, and continues until the water begins to ice over. In principle, it’s possible to fish the entire winter if the water remains free from ice. Remember to use common sense when the weather gets colder. Flat rocks and stones turn extremely slippery, so try to fish with a friend.

AUTUMN:

Don’t forget to bring a tasty snack and something warm to sit on. Binoculars can be fun to have to see whether there are any white-tailed eagles soaring in the sky or whether it’s a seal or a rock you can see out in the big blue. And a camera is a must.

It comforts the soul to wander our vast coastline. You’ll often see white-tailed eagle, osprey, waterfowl and seal. The fishing can be a little tricky and difficult, but don’t give up. We usually say that the fish are simply a bonus on top of the overall nature experience. INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF A CATCH! Methods that work are spin fishing and fly fishing. Fishing lures should resemble sand eel, herring, lamprey, stickleback and cottid. Generally speaking, long, thin lures are preferable. Reel the lure in unevenly, as this tempts sea trout to bite. Also use flies that resemble gammarus, stickleback, sand eel or cottid. Move in stealthily and begin casting when standing a short distance from the water’s edge. Fish near the water’s edge in a fanning motion. Use polarising sunglasses that enable you to see beneath the surface and any sea trout following your lure. Sea trout are shy and you can’t jump out to the furthest rock in bright clothing, as this will scare the trout and they’ll flee immediately.

PERCH AND PIKE Fishing methods that work for perch and pike are spin fishing, coarse fishing, ice fishing and fly fishing. When spin fishing, the lure should resemble tiny fish. Spinners and small lures, as well as small wobblers and rubber jigs, work. The latter can prove extremely successful. Use a float with worms, tiny fish (roach, common bleak) or maggots when coarse fishing. When ice fishing, use vertical jigging lures, preferably with a leader and mormyshka underneath baited with maggot, worm or larvae. When the fishing is slow, a mormyshka alone is often the only thing that will land you a catch. Use poppers or colourful wet flies and reel them in jerkily when fly fishing for perch. When fly fishing for pike, large and colourful creations with bright, squiggly tails in green/silver, blue/ silver work. Reel them in unevenly, sometimes speedily, sometimes jerkily. If you have a boat you’d like to launch, you’ll find ramps and further information at fiskeisundsvall.se. And finally: If there are tiny fish, then there are always smaller fish.

Standing looking out over the open sea, with a small rod in your hand, can feel hopeless, but there’s a good chance a sea trout will fall for your lure and swallow it violently when landed. A good tip is to before you start fishing always check where you can land your catch safely, should something bite.

The lakes and waterways in Medelpad are thriving and some have been revived and restored so that the fish can spawn and reproduce naturally. One nice example is the river Ljustorpsån, which runs into the river Indalsälven at Stavreviken. INDALSÄLVEN – BEST IN SWEDEN FOR BIG SALMON AND SEA TROUT

fishing. Some of the lakes are so-called put-and-take waters, whereby a fishery plants rainbow trout, trout and Arctic char. A fishing permit is always required for such waters and as a fisher you are responsible for finding out about the rules which apply to the waters you plan to fish. Sidsjön, however, is an exception. Here fishing is free for everyone all year round. (Except in the winter when the STnappet competition is held. Sundsvall’s Sport Fishing Club closes the water one week before.)

The river Indalsälven stretches 430 km and offers good fishing along its entire length. Here we present fishing downstream from the Bergeforsen hydropower plant. This stretch covers about eight kilometres from the hydropower plant to the sea and the water level is regulated via the Bergeforsen power plant. Open for fishing all year round, split into three zones and permitted from both land and boat. Fishing permit required. Indalsälven is renowned for being one of Sweden’s absolute best rivers for large salmon and sea trout. Salmon weighing about 20 kilos are landed here every year. The sea trout fishing is good and the whitefish are increasing in number again. A few years ago, Indalsälven was the most densely stocked river in Sweden. The migratory sea fish can only swim as far as Bergeforsen power station, which was completed in 1965. LJUNGAN – FLY FISHING PARADISE FOR SALMON, SEA TROUT, GRAYLING AND WHITEFISH The river Ljungan offers variation, with both rapids and calmer waters, offering – in addition to good fishing – an impressive nature experience just over 15 minutes from Sundsvall city centre. The river stretches 350 km and offers good fishing along its entire length. Here we present fishing downstream from the Viforsen hydropower plant, which is the most downstream power station in the system. This stretch covers 18 kilometres from the hydropower plant to the sea and the water level is regulated via the Viforsen power plant. It’s open for fishing all year round except in conjunction with a few closed seasons when the grayling and sea trout/salmon are spawning. Fishing permit required. Ljungan is known to be a fly fishing paradise for salmon, sea trout, grayling and whitefish. Salmon up to 20 kilos, and sea trout up to 10 kilos, are landed here every year. HAVERÖ STRÖMMAR – GREAT FOR FLY FISHING Haverö strömmar is a nature reserve and part of the Ljungan’s river system. Here one of Ånge’s most popular cafés is open on the weekend. The waters are open for fishing spring, summer and autumn and a permit is required. This place is well known for good grayling fishing with a fly rod and really beautiful trout are landed here every year. Fly fishing in late spring in Haverö-Kölsillre-Vassnäsströmmar. SIDSJÖN – CENTRAL GEM FOR FISHERS AND SUN WORSHIPERS Sidsjön is a gem just a stone’s throw from Sundsvall city centre. It’s open for fishing all year round and you can fly fish, spin fish and coarse fish/ice fish. This popular recreational area boasts a slalom slope and nicely prepared ski tracks in the winter and running tracks and other training opportunities in the summer. Here fishing is completely free and Sundsvall Municipality plants rainbow trout and Arctic char all year round. Adjacent to the cottage (by the ski lift) is a jetty with very good accessibility. The story of Sundsvall can be seen right in front of us. On the buildings of Stenstan. So look up and soak in a unique city centre, with buildings not seen this far north anywhere else in the world. S U N D S V A L L ’ S S T O N E C I T Y rose from the ashes after the fire of 1888. “Like a monument to a golden age without compare in Sweden’s history,” says author and journalist Nils Johan Tjärnlund. His book Staden som reste sig ur askan, which translates as The City that Rose from the Ashes, is an architectural guide illustrating the birth of Sundsvall’s stone city. Who commissioned the buildings and who were the architects? And what were their original purposes? The golden age that Nils Johan describes was founded on the highest concentration of sawmills in the world. The forestry industry generated unparalleled growth in Sundsvall, which even played a role in laying the foundations for the welfare of both the city and the entire nation. “Sweden’s economic history owes much to the development of Sundsvall and its forestry industry, trade and shipping,” says Nils Johan. With few exceptions, all the buildings in Stenstan were built with private funds, some in fact as family homes. As such, the region was pretty independent and distinguished by its innovation and entrepreneurialism. “Sundsvall is also a sibling of sorts to Östermalm in Stockholm, with its grandiose stone houses built by the same architects and master builders. It reflects a thousand-year-old European urban building tradition,” says Nils Johan. In his book, he writes that Sundsvall was a waypoint for people from northern Sweden considering whether to try their luck in America. And perhaps some of them decided to stay put, such was the pull of the pioneering

Sundsvall had tramways between 1910 and 1952. spirit in the city that came to be known as the Gateway to northern Sweden. Sundsvall was a hub for trade goods from all over the world for further distribution to the north. Stenstan was a melting pot and a bit of an oddity, a European-style city that rose among farmland and dirt roads. And in this respect Sundsvall remains unique, as Swedish art historian Anders Åman expressed it in 1988: “In the eyes of the old European urban building tradition, Stenstan is the last city in Europe. If you arrive from the south. Or the first. If you arrive from the north.” So join us on a tour of the first and last city. Through Sundsvall’s unique city centre, with buildings not seen this far north anywhere else in the world. Through a city that following disaster in 1888 experienced a successful new beginning and whose rich history is open for all to see. Because the story of Sundsvall can be seen right in front of us. HOTELL KNAUST Storgatan 13. Built 1891. Legendary hotel renowned both in Sweden and abroad. Knaust became a symbol for the Sundsvall of the timber barons, with magnificent dinners, parties surrounded by myth and share holder meetings. The classic stairway in the foyer and the richly decorated mirrored ballroom are breathtaking sights even for the most well-travelled visitors. The most prominent guests to have stayed at the hotel include King Chulalongkorn of Thailand, Swedish singer/actress Zarah Leander and jazz musician Louis Armstrong. 3

FÖRSÄKRINGSBOLAGET SVEAS HUS Storgatan 18. Built 1893. One of many examples that both the capital-intensive insurance industry and many banks were attracted to Sundsvall and its thriving economy. For a time, Swedish author and women’s rights activist Frida Stéenhoff lived here. 4

SUNDSVALLS ENSKILDA BANK Kyrkogatan 15. Built 1883–1886. Sundsvalls Enskilda Bank was founded in 1864 at another address. A little more than twenty years later, the building was completed and encompassed an entire block adjacent to Vängåvan Park, only to be devastated in the great fire a couple of years later. The building was badly damaged, but was restored. At the time, it was the largest bank office outside Stockholm and Sundsvalls Enskilda Bank was the leading commercial bank in Norrland. 5

GRANSKA HUSET Storgatan 26. Built 1889–1891. One of Stenstan’s first examples of the new architectural ideal of the late 1800s with n atural materials and irregular façades. The building was commissioned by wealthy pharmacist Peter Gran and the text Apoteket Gripen is still visible at the corner of Storgatan and Centralgatan. Keep an eye out for the many façade paintings and Latin texts, well as Gran’s monogram. NORRas A 7

HOLMSTRÖMSKA HUSET Storgatan 28. Built 1896. This was the city’s indoor food market, and later SÖDRA JÄRNVÄ GSGATA Forum, and today h department store ouses the N In shopping mall, which covers several blocks on Storgatan. The building is so well harmonised with the adjacent Granska huset that it’s easy to mistake them for a single construction. The courtyard between the buildings has been covered and today houses a restaurant. 8

HIRSCHSKA HUSET Torggatan 6–8. Built 1890–1891. Hirschska huset covers the entire length of the western side of Stora Torget and retains much of its original elegance following extensive restoration work about ten years ago. Isaak Hirsch, whose initials can be found on the façade, commissioned the building but never lived here himself, an example of the wealthy choosing to invest in Sundsvall despite few personal ties to the city. The façade clock facing Storgatan is a copy of the original that belonged to the oldest tenant (Björnström Clockmakers). 9

HEDBERGSKA HUSET Kyrkogatan 26. Built 1889–1890. One of the most well preserved buildings from the 1800s in Sundsvall, with a beautiful location adjacent to Hedbergska Park. The building was commissioned by Johan August Hedberg as a home for him and his wife Maria Hedberg. The façade decor includes stylised faces and bunches of fruit and the iron gates to the driveway bear Hedberg’s initials. Today, parts of the state apartments are used by the municipality for business entertainment and wedding ceremonies. 10

Eight old colonial warehouses combined into a culture centre with space for exhibitions, a library and a restaurant. RIKSBANKEN Storgatan 29. Built 1906–1907. One of few buildings financed with public funds. Inspired by the Baroque style with a steep, black tiled roof and copper-clad corner towers. Above the word Riksbank is a large relief featuring Sweden’s national coat of arms. FÖRSÄKRINGSBOLAGET SKANDIAS HUS Storgatan 31. Built 1957. A later example of all that Stenstan represents: a time when buildings were commissioned to make an impression rather than returns. This is clearly seen in the artistic decoration, such as the wooden window frames and the ornamental ironwork seen in the entrance from Varvsgränd. The subjects are inspired by the forest, industry, the sea and the home. 13

LÄROVERKET Skolhusallén 6. Built 1882–1886. Not until the mid-1800s were grammar schools established in cities other than the old cathedral towns. In Sundsvall, a grandiose, three-storey building in an Italian renaissance style was erected. A vaulted archway marks the main entrance facing Köpmangatan, where modern-day high school graduates run out onto the steps every spring. The building survived the great fire and was long used as a temporary seat for the city’s governing body. 14

BERNSKA HUSET Storgatan 34. Built 1893–1894. A candidate for Stenstan’s most expensive building, built entirely from natural stone with ambitious façade paintings and a very lavish stairway. The building was commissioned by Johan Bern and above the entrance you can see J Bern in gold lettering. Nowadays the building houses stores, offices and a café. 11

Time travel in Stenstan

24–25 AUGUST 14–15 SEPTEMBER The sport event of the year, claim trotting fans. The Sundsvall Open Trot is one of Europe’s biggest trotting events and Norrland’s biggest sport event, according to organiser Bergsåker. The best horses and drivers travel to Bergsåker trotting track for two fun-filled days that also attract thousands of visitors on the last Friday and Saturday of August each year.

It’s never more appropriate to wear something old than during Stenstan Days. This is when Sundsvall’s history comes to life with a market, music, lectures and live shows. Many people take the opportunity to dress in period clothing from the turn of the twentieth century to better reflect how things were in the city one hundred years ago.

Lögdö Ironworks closed down more than a century ago. But the site’s fascinating history has been preserved as Sweden’s first municipal culture reserve and a couple of times a year it’s once again filled with life. Scheduled for 30 June is Lögdö Day, with a classic market and activities for both young and old.

During a daily urban ritual from 1 January 1999 to 1 January 2000, Sundsvall residents were invited to bury select gifts to be kept for the future. The idea was part of Millennium Project 1999.

The most beautiful of all the warm, shimmering summer nights in Norrland has to be Midsummer’s Eve with its special charm. In Sundsvall there are several celebrations in magnificent surroundings, although most people gather for a traditional Midsummer’s Eve at Norra Berget. Free buses depart from Navet for all who want to join in and dance around the Maypole, which the participants decorate and raise themselves.

30 JUNE The biggest picnic concert of the year at Galtström Ironworks with Tomas Andersson Wij will set the mood for the summer. This experienced performer’s career has skyrocketed since he appeared in Swedish TV4’s music show ‘Så mycket bättre’ where, among other things, he brought viewers to tears when covering the songs of his fellow stars. On 30 June, together with Melissa Horn and each of their bands, he’ll join the three-hour Summer Music in Galtström event in a double bill for everyone who’s set up their picnic basket and camping chair in front of the manor house. e n t r e s u n d s va l l . s e

Stenstan was built in record time

The dragon is covered in gold

600 stone buildings were completed in just six years following the great fire of Sundsvall in 1888. Today, Stenstan is the world’s northernmost city centre in the same continental architectural tradition as cities such as Vienna and Berlin.

The dragon on the roof of Hirschska huset is covered in gold leaf equivalent in weight to an old Swedish five crown coin. This dragon also inspired the design of Sundsvall Municipality’s logo.

ACTIVITIES Classic time! 27 MAY, 18 AUGUST AND 15 SEPTEMBER Prepare for a classic race in Medelpad’s naturally challenging landscape. By completing four classic races in the space of a year you can earn your Sundsvall Classic medal, and you get to choose the level of difficulty. Cycle, swim and run in the Alnötrampen Cycle Race, the Sundsvall Classic Swim and the Sundsvall Classic Cross Country during the summer months. Come winter, you can test your prowess in the Södra Berget Ski Race.

INDALSLEDEN RACE THROUGH THREE MUNICIPALITIES 16 JUNE

In Norafors, some 25 kilometres from Sundsvall, is an actual gold panning camp. Rent or buy equipment on site and learn from experienced gold panners. Even if sudden wealth doesn’t strike, you can still treat yourself to something nice. Why not rent your very own mountain lake full of game fish? The season runs from May to October and you need to book.

The relay race along Indalsleden, which passes through Ragunda, Sundsvall and Timrå, starts in Bispgården and takes runners out from the land of Wild Huss and the Dead Falls. The race then continues past the Thai Pavilion built in memory of King Chulalongkorn’s visit more than one hundred years ago. With the beautiful vistas seen from Indalsleden as a backdrop, the race continues towards Järkvissle and artist Rolf Lidberg’s Troll Village. Near Indal we find tourist attraction Gudmundstjärn, a farming settlement, and all this is finished off nicely as your pass the line at Bergeforsen sports ground. Itching to get running? Then put together a relay team and register for the Indalsleden Race.

Take a rooftop stroll

Sweden’s longest flea market is back for the sixth year running. Over the space of two days, flea market stalls are set up along Ljungan dalsvägen. Not only can anyone set up a stall anywhere along the road, there are also a number of set gathering places. This year Sweden’s longest flea market will actually be even longer. Plans to extend Ljungandalsvägen through all of Ånge Municipality and into Berg Municipality are in the making and to test the waters sellers are encouraged to set up stalls along the extended route.

A dream come true. Alesso will be playing this year’s Sensommar festival at Idrottsparken. Swede Alessandro Lindblad is one of the biggest international performers in house music and, according to the organisers, one of the stars most requested by festival-goers. “He’ll get the entire Sensommar Festival to explode in a euphoria of dance,” predicts Oscar Westerlind, CEO of Höga Kusten Nöje. Icona Pop, Alan Walker, Hov1, Kapten Röd, Tjuvjakt and Tove Styrke are other popular artists already in the line-up. The Sensommar Festival started in 2015 and since then has trebled its visitor numbers and attracted a number of international stars to Sundsvall. In 2001, Casino Cosmopol in Sundsvall was inaugurated as the first of Sweden’s now four state-run casinos. When the casino was built in the old station house, the entire building was raised 1.5 metres so that a basement level measuring over 1000 m² could be excavated under the premises.

Sweden’s longest wooden bridge is in Fränsta Vikbron in Fränsta, Ånge Municipality, is Sweden’s longest wooden bridge of this type. It stretches 133 metres across the river Ljungan and is open to pedestrians. Vikbron was built by Finsta-Viken Byamän in 1888 to protest the toll demanded when crossing the existing bridge over Byforsen, half a kilometre away. Today, the bridge is a popular destination and many people admire the beauty of both the design and the surrounding landscape.

Public favourite Vindhem came out tops when the public chose their favourite restaurant at Sundsvall Restaurant Gala 2018. This summer restaurant on south Alnö won most hearts with its selection of classic dishes seasoned with small surprises and served in an unrivalled archipelago environment. Huge Y shows Timrå’s faith in the future The giant Y adjacent to the E4 near Sundsvall Timrå Airport is 30.5 metres high and was inaugurated in 1995. The artist behind the work is Bengt Lindström and the Y represents the county registration letter for Västernorrland. Or a giant stretching its arms towards the heavens in a victory sign. Or a monumental tree as a symbol for faith in the future. The question visitors most commonly ask the owner, Timrå Municipality, is: Can you go up inside the Y? The answer is no. The artwork is to be admired from the outside.
