Can Spirituality Be a Trend?

Spirituality is gaining influence among milliennials as the new “it” fad. Using crystals and reading horoscopes as a guide in making decisions and cleansing your life has been quickly growing in popularity. Going on Instagram, its hard to scroll through my feed without seeing a caption along the lines of “Reenergize on this gloomy day with some avo sun salutations! #TrustYourJourney” or a cryptic quote like “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. #soulsearching.” It has come to a point where if someone asks you, “What’s your sign?”, you don’t hesitate to answer, as if they just asked what your name is. Millenials are not interested in small talk to just fill silence. If they are going to use their voice, it is their intention to say something of importance. They want to know the purpose of life and your views about the make up of the universe. This new-found interest in spiritual rituals is influencing the clothing we will see in the future. Mixing comfortable yoga clothes with more bohemian styles to show your down to earth nature will be the easiest way to show you belong to this fast-growing spiritual community. Gem colors paired with mystic dark hues will be the go-to color pallet, some even can go as far as wearing certain colors to fit their energy. We’ll see a rise in jewelry adorned with crystals, large statement pieces to complete an outfit or just a small delicate piece to give that extra touch. Depending on what you need that day, you might wear a rose quart to help with anxiety or an opal to increase inspiration. Finer detailing on clothing, like embroidery and beading, will depict zodiac signs and spiritual symbols to add a charming element to the fabric. These are just a few examples of how this new lifestyle trend will be sneaking its way into fashion with accessories and outfit details. Even millennials who are not into spiritual healing are going to be introducing these new spiritual trends into their closets, maybe not for the crystal powers or finding meaning in astrology, but simply because it’s a trend. Every time I step into Urban Outfitters, I have to browse over the table of home accessories before I leave. Lately, there is always a small collection of crystals, incense sticks or meditation candles. Even though I personally am not into meditation or spiritual healing, I can’t help but debate purchasing a crystal for my desk – mostly due to the simple fact that it’s sparkly and pretty. However, being surrounded by these concepts and fads, it’s hard not to think about the possibility that there is some truth behind reading stars or aligning your chakras. I mean, if so many people are starting to stand behind it, who’s to say it doesn’t work. People are becoming more open minded and are open to trying out this trend because we are seeing other people find peace in them.
