YEAR SIX_THESIS DATA DERIVE:
DEVELOPMENT OF INITIAL COVENTRY STUDY, STARTING FROM MAPPING AREAS OF FRICTION, TO PIXEL MAPS OF LAND USE OVER TIME, AND FLUX MAPS TO SHOW THE NUMBER OF SPATIAL USE CHANGES THROUGHOUT TIME
HACKING COVENTRY This group project aimed to investigate the postconflict environment of Coventry. We were interested in the idea that trauma and conflict can be a catalyst for change. Trauma is a key part of Coventry’s history due to its destruction in World War II and the deindustrialisation of the car production trade. Hacking is the art of reassembling a system to produce a different result and we defined Coventry as a complex system, and us as hackers aiming to find points of weakness or opportunity in the city for architectural intervention, to improve the system. We perceived the city’s system as spatial (physical) and behavioural, both affecting the changing appropriation of space over time, which sees the conflict between the stasis and flux of space. Aiming to uncover the points of friction between flux and stasis, we mapped the land use throughout the city centre over time, and then created flux maps, showing patterns of how the actual programming of spaces has changed. These maps and patterns were then used to create a three dimensional cellular automata model of the city, a computer-based projected simulation of how the spatial and behavioural systems of the city may continue to change in the future. The aim of this model was to reveal potential areas of intervention or to suggest programmatic requirements that will benefit the city in the future, allowing intelligent and informed decisions to be made benefitting the system from a bottom-up collaboration rather than top-down instigation.

YEAR SIX_THESIS HACKING COVENTRY: Following from the group project, my work aimed to create an interjection which would be responsive and adaptive to Coventry’s everchanging spatial needs. Hacking Coventry is a civic hub and infrastructural interjection that aims to provide residents of Coventry with a new type of public realm space, which they are able to ‘hack’ and continuously reprogramme to suit their changing needs. Based upon the basic programmes of sports, event and marketplace, the scheme’s strategy employs methods so that these programmes may become interchangeable with each other, and therefore the programme can be chosen by the user. This is achieved through the use of time based grid systems incorporating all programmes, and the strategic use of surface treatments, colour and materiality which change to reflect the different uses. The scheme is situated upon Junction 6 of the Ring Road a seemingly inappropriate site, yet is the key node separating the inner and outer city centre, separating residents from the city. Challenging this fixture whose only current purpose if for mobility, aims to hack this site and reprogramme what is it used for,, turning this ‘non-place’ into a significant, social, cultural and dynamic place for Coventry’s residents.
DRAWING: SHORT SECTIONS A - F WITH SPATIAL HACKS SCALE: 1:200 @ A1 WIDTH
The circulation strategy is a key driver of the project, determing the connections between different spaces and their changing programmes. Surface (treatment and spatial quality) and form are also particularly significant especially the idea that a surface can be considered as a continuously changing plane perceived not specifically as a floor, roof or wall, but all three and can be manipulated between these planes. The scheme was developed extensively in section so that it is continuously changing along every grid line, in order to explore the spatial flux throughout the scheme. Below shows gridlines A-F and their changing spatial hacks, from performance spaces, market spaces, walkways and sport ramps and courts.

YEAR 5_ DATA DERIVE : OCCUPY AND CONTROL BRADFORD PART OF THE ‘ISSUES OF URBANIZATION’ EXHIBITION, GUANGDONG MUSEUM OF ART, CHINA This group project was an abstract installation, visualising the relationship between Bradford as an urban centre and the occupation & control of space through the case study of the 2001 Bradford riots. We collected data in order to understand the factors of the riot and visualised this through three dimensional simulations, whilst allowing the user to experience this information through a digital avatar. Multiple simulations including the riot event, police and rioter’s perspectives were created. This project was an exploration of how to re-represent research, as well as an opportunity to develop scripting and coding skills.
YEAR FIVE_ CREATURE FEATURE : [UN]REGULATED MODULAR MARKET Expanding upon the notion of the control of space within the city centre, my scheme investigated the failing retail sector in the city, an unusual situation as Bradford was historically known for local products and retail. This scheme aimed to reintroduce local retail; I proposed a factory which produced mobile and transformable retail units for local businesses that can allow them to infiltrate into the city. The retail units unfold to display their products once they reach their destination and this feature is also incorporated into the factory building design. Panels and walls unfold to create slack spaces, courtyards and viewing platforms dependant on the changing uses of the building whether factory production, or local public based marketing events are occuring. Different colours, fluoresecent lighting and supergraphics were used to identify zones and transforming panels, dependant on their public or private use, and the types of spaces they are creating or affecting - whether this may be the factory, marketing or distribution aspect. These visuals show the external day and night views.

YEAR FIVE_ [RE]MODEL : THE URBAN WALKER A conceptual kinetic model exploring how the proposed retail units could unfold and ‘walk’ around the city centre, using a mechanism based upon the work of Theo Jansen. The movements were achieved by the use of an Arduino with a script to run servo motors.

During a year long Part 1 placement working for Bond Bryan Architects, a practice primarily focused on education based projects, the majority of my time was spent working on a refurbishment and new build project at East Berkshire College, Slough, which included a sports hall, hospitality suite and indoor street. I was greatly involved in the project from Stage C through to Tender.
