GREETINGS FROM DEVON PREP! I am truly honored to write to you at this time. As Devon Prep’s Headmaster, I understand the importance of leading a school with such a long tradition and strong reputation. When the Piarist Fathers arrived in Philadelphia they brought their European education model that had survived two World Wars. Devon Prep opened its doors in 1956 and since then the school has been a true model for learning and growing. With great effort, the Piarist Fathers built Devon Prep which, 60 years later, continues to educate young men in accordance with the Piarist charisma, in Faith and Learning (Pietas et Litterae). We are very proud of our past. Each one of your histories is part of our history, and at the same time part of our future. As we look to the future we are called to preserve the substance of our identity as Piarists as well as our excellence in education. We have already installed a modern curriculum and schedule and have recruited a talented and committed faculty. We are working really hard. We do it every day as we educate our students, and as we plan for the future. But for now I would like to bring your attention to an important project. Our Campaign for Devon Prep is focused on refurbishing the upper school building built in 1961. It is time to do it. Our students spend their days in these classrooms and we believe it’s time to update them. We will begin with a new air conditioning and heating system that will offer the best environment in which to learn. At the same time we plan to reconstruct the labs, relocate the Middle School, and open new classrooms in the building. This is very exciting, and I want you to be part of this project. Please, take a minute to reflect on the IMPACT Devon Prep has made on you. Now, take another minute to consider how you can influence the future of Devon Prep. A contribution to the Campaign for Devon Prep will proudly affirm your commitment to the IMPACT Devon Prep will make now and forever. I look forward to meeting each of you. I’m sure there are many experiences we can share. You will find me here, at Devon, working with the administration, faculty and staff on the current school year and planning for the future. I am counting on you.

IMPACT HOW DO DEVON PREP STUDENTS MAKE AN IMPACT? A hallmark of attending Devon Prep is the ability to make an IMPACT. Devon’s small-by-design structure allows boys the opportunity to make great IMPACT. Our boys are immersed in a challenging environment where taking on a leadership role is literally around every corner. This attribute gives our boys the ability to develop a greater sense of their importance at Devon, and the potential to make an IMPACT in their community now and in the future. You also have the ability to make the same IMPACT on our current and future boys. It’s not every day that the beginning of great transformation can be shared and led by an entire community. The Campaign for Devon Prep is the opportunity for all of us to share in the IMPACT that our boys will make in our world.

“In order to overcome the obstacles, you have to want success. You can’t just expect it, you need to strive and work for it. Devon Prep teaches you how to have that drive and motivation, so that you can reach those dreams and goals.” – JOE SCAVITTO, ‘21

PHASE 3 PLANNED COMPLETION IN THE SUMMER OF 2017 This most aggressive and immediate stage includes a complete renovation of the original 1960’s school building. Both the internal and external building will see a major overhaul in look and amenities. Our balanced approach to Devon Prep’s development includes both an upgrade to the baseball field and viewing stands and a renewed commitment to growing our endowment.

PHASE 3 PLANNED COMPLETION IN THE SUMMER OF 2017 • Creation of an oratory, or day chapel, within the school for the daily use of students and faculty. • Modernization of the science labs and classroom upgrades to support the highestquality education of our students. We must do all that is possible to ensure that our classroom facilities fully support the school’s outstanding curriculum, better engage students, and keep pace with the rigorous educational goals of our school. • Installation of a modern, energy-efficient HVAC system. • Complete renovation of the facade including a full mansard roof and replacement of inefficient windows and doors with thermally efficient ones. Not only will this provide an aesthetically pleasing exterior of the building, but with the rising costs of energy, we will reduce operating costs. • Completion of courtyard improvements to further enhance the exterior appearance of our campus and provide a warm, welcoming outdoor space for our students. The courtyard will hold a Veterans Memorial – already funded by alumni donors - to memorialize Devon Prep alumni who gave their lives in service to our country.

ATHLETICS IMPROVEMENTS Devon Prep’s Athletic Program is essential to the development of our boys. One of the great benefits of a small school is the opportunity to make a big IMPACT at a highly competitive level. At Devon, our boys can reach heights in spirit, comradery and leadership that they never thought were attainable. Balancing our campaign effort in all facets of education is a priority, and athletics provides an area ripe for improvement. • Baseball field enhancements • New scoreboards for basketball and soccer

“At Devon I saw the importance of a holistic education where both the mind and heart are educated. I saw that what happens outside of the classroom is just as important as what happens inside of it.” – REV. GERARD OLINGER, CSC ‘97

University of Portland VP for University Relations

FUND FOR DEVON PREP: ENDOWMENT AND WORKING CAPITAL The Fund for Devon Prep will provide needed resources to strengthen our current financial position and allow us to weather fluctuations in enrollment and other economic challenges. The Fund will give us working capital and reserves to reduce existing debt and free resources for the academic and program priorities of the school as well as ongoing maintenance of the campus. By building our endowment, we prepare for the future and ensure the financial security of the school. Devon Prep remains one of the most affordable private schools in the area with a strong practice of providing financial assistance to students – over $1 million annually. By offering tuition assistance to needy families, we remain true to the mission of the Piarist Fathers. The Fund for Devon Prep will give us spendable and endowed funds that support scholarships and financial aid without jeopardizing our operating budget.

We ask that each member of the Devon Prep community make a reflective and meaningful commitment to the campaign. A variety of opportunities for gifts at every level are available. Gifts may be made in cash, or through gifts of stock, real estate or appreciated assets. Some may choose to make a large single gift to this effort; others have requested a payment schedule which, over time, will allow them to extend the limits of their generosity and commitment. TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!
