Basketball

The freshmen team opened up their season on Tuesday with a 60-27 win over Friends Central. The ball moved tremendously well with 7 players getting involved in the scoring action. The team was led by James Kaune ‘28 with 17. The freshmen team went on the road on Thursday and dropped a tough one against La Salle 51-30. After a slow start, the Tide mounted a comeback and cut the lead to 12 but ran out of gas. The team was led by James Kaune ‘28 with 13 points. The freshmen team wrapped up the week on Friday with a win over Episcopal Academy 59-18. The defense held their opponents to single digits in each quarter. 8 members of the Tide got involved in the scoring action and James Kaune ‘28 led the team with 13 points.

The JV team started their season this week by going 3-0 with wins over Sankofa, Lasalle and Episcopal Academy. The team opened up their season at home Tuesday against Sankofa. They won by a score of 63-45. The team responded very well when Sankofa made a run late in the game. The JV team followed up their home opener by going on the road to Lasalle. This was a great game between two very good teams. Devon found a way to hang on for the win by taking care of the basketball and playing very tough defense. The JV team was back in action the next day, traveling to Episcopal Academy. It was a team wide balanced effort leading to a 61-29 win. The JV team is back in action on Tuesday as we host Mast Charter.

The Varsity team opened up the season on Tuesday vs Sankofa. After a rousing rendition of the national anthem by Jackson Fisher ‘29 on the guitar the team entered into a battle. Two very tough and physical teams took to the court and Devon prevailed by a sore of 70-50.

The team then travelled to Baltimore to play St. Frances. This game was an absolute war against two very skilled teams. The Tide battled but unfortunately it was not their night. The shots were not falling and St. Francis had too much talent and wound up winning by 20. In the long run, games like this are exactly what the Tide need to prepare for the challenging Philadelphia Catholic League. The team is back in action next Friday night as they host Bishop Shanahan in the first round of the Brad Fisher Memorial Tournament.

Over the weekend, the MS Gold team had two games. In their first game on Saturday, they lost 39-50 to St. Norberts. We played with great energy on defense and did an excellent job sharing the ball throughout the game. Ben led the way with 9 points, including a three-pointer, while Mike Malloy ‘30 and Montgomery Angell ‘30 added 8 points each, both also knocking down a three. Despite the strong defensive effort and unselfish play, we struggled to convert open shots, and make layups. Additionally, we gave up too many second-chance opportunities, making it harder to gain control of the game.

In the Tide’s second game on Sunday, the Tide lost 24-50 to OMGC. We showed determination and hustle, specifically with good defensive rotations and effort to get back in transition. Montgomery Angell ‘30 led the scoring with 9 points, while Ben Hoyos-Sosa ‘29. added 4 points, and Mike Malloy ‘29 knocked down our only three-pointer of the game. Despite the effort, we struggled to stop shooters, giving up 9 three-pointers, and allowed OMGC oo many second-chance opportunities. Every point the other team scored was hard-earned, a testament to our team’s grit and refusal to back down.

Bowling

The Tide has started their season strong with a 21 record through 3 matches against Perk Valley and Holy Ghost. The team currently sits at a 6-6 game record. The squad looks to continue their strong start as they begin PCL matches next week.

Hockey

In their lone matchup last week, the Frozen Tide completed a season sweep of Great Valley/Phoenixville with a 5-4 home victory.

Seniors, Kieran Crossan ‘25 and James Gabriele ‘25 led the attack with 2 goals apiece and Jonathan Eves ‘28 contributed with a goal of his own. Freshman, Danny Pucci ‘28 chipped in with two assists, including setting up the game winner by James Gabriele with minutes to play in the game.

Aidan Wright ‘27 turned away 32 of the 36 shots he faced while the Frozen Tide poured in 58 shots of their own. The win moves Devon’s league record up to 4-2-0 on the season.

Wrestling

On Wednesday, the Tide wrestling team opened up their 2024-2025 season on the road as they traveled to Bristol High School. The Tide is optimistic about this season and how the program slowly continues to grow each year. With having holes in the line up, which results in a forfeit (6 team points) the Tide remained competitive throughout the match even though they fell to Bristol with the score of 42-30. The Tide had five huge wins that all resulted in pins, thanks to Salvatore Albert ‘27 (121), Christian Leckman ‘27 (133), Shane Dugan ‘25 (160), Jason Bushra ‘27 (172), and John Curran ‘25 (189). Great efforts also came from Xavier Smith ‘28 (127), Charlie Kleiner ‘28 (139), Matt McHugh ‘28 (145), Grant Napoletano ‘27 (215), Declan Sullivan ‘26 (215), and Nathaniel Rondon ‘28 (HW).

On Saturday, the Tide went on the road again to Allentown to attend the Raptor Invitational, hosted by Executive Education Academy Charter School. This was an individual tournament with double elimination. The Tide had six wrestlers in attendance that were prepared to rumble! The Tide was represented by Salvatore Albert ‘27 (121), Christian Leckman ‘27 (133), Matt McHugh ‘28 (145), Shane Dugan ‘25 (160), Jason Bushra ‘27 (172), and Grant Napoletano ‘27 (215). Each member of the Tide battled throughout the tournament and showed a lot of fight against some stiff competition. At the end of the day Salvatore finished 0-2, Christian finished 0-2, Matt finished 0-2, Shane finished 3-2, Jason finished 1-2, and Grant finished 0-2. This tournament gave the boys a valuable mat time and experience to power through the first half of the season!

Athlete of the Week

John Curran ‘25

This week's Athlete of the Week is awarded to Senior wrestler, John Curran. John has recently joined the wrestling team after taking a few years off so that he could cap off his senior year in athletics here at Devon. John has made an immediate impact in the wrestling room, on his teammates, and as an overall leader. In his first match of the season against Bristol HS, John decided to step up for the team and jump up a weight class to benefit the team by wrestling 189. John stepped onto the mat for the first time competitively in years and dominated his opponent with getting his first pin of the season for the Tide!
