Basketball

Good luck to the basketball team Thursday night in the PIAA AAAA State Chapionship. The team will play at the Giant Center at Hershey Park against the D3 champion, Berks Catholics. This is the teams third trip to Hershey in the last four seasons. The team has played Valley View, Bishop Shanahan, Eastern York and Bishop McDevitt in the playoffs this year. The team also defeated Dobbins in the district 12 championship game. Hopefully we see all of you out at Hershey Thursday night!

Baseball

This past week, the Devon Prep Tide baseball team traveled to The Shipley School for a non-conference matchup. While Devon lost the game 3-2 on a late score by Shipley, the team fought hard until the end and had the tying run on base in the final inning.

This past Saturday, we held our first annual Blue & Gold scrimmage, where the rosters were drafted by the coaches and the program played an inter-squad game. MVP of the game was freshman Matt McHugh ‘28, who went 2-3 with a double and scored a run.

Next up is the PCL opener vs St. Joe’s Prep at Maple Zone ports Village. The Prep finished 8-4 in the PCL last year and returns a very strong roster.

Crew

Due to an illness, the team had to change lineups and race plans at the last minute at our first race, the Second Manny Flick Racing Series. Since rowers are not eligible to race in multiple events at the Flicks, in order to avoid scratching, Josh Vaughn ('27), with two weeks of rowing experience, was tapped to jump into the novice quad and Zaven Sevag ('28) moved from the novice quad to the varsity quad.

The novice quad (Cameron Sacunas '28, Josh Vaughn '27, Andew Rockich '27, and Levon Placido '27) finished sixth of six boats in their event, as Josh did his best to keep up with rowers who had rowed since the fall. It was a valiant effort by this crew, and they will close the gap quickly.

In the Varsity Lightweight Double, we had two entries who were competitive despite being younger and lighter than the competition. Teddy Marvin ('27) and Sal Albert ('27) finished fourth and Chris DeMaio ('25) and David Vickers ('27) sixth of six boats. Both boats were poised and showed room for growth.

The Varsity Quad comprised of Brendan Cuff ('27), Jason Bushra ('27), Zaven Saveg ('28), and Matt Norton ('25) showed toughness and finished third of five boats. This race was their first time rowing as a unit, and they showed composure as they held off a charge by Lower Merion.

Next week the entire team will be on the race course!!

Lacrosse

Your Devon Prep Lacrosse teams opened their season with two ChesMont games this past week!

First up was our non-PCL catholic school rival, Bishop Shanahan. First up was the JV who fell short, losing 7-3. Connor Thornton ‘28 led the way with a goal and an assist. Jason Kleiner ‘26 and Deji Abodunde ‘27 each with a goal, while Peter Angelakos ‘27 had an assist.

The varsity game was the highest intensity we have seen for a first game of the year in a long while. Sadly the Tide ended up falling a little short in a 12-9 loss. Scoring was led by Declan Sullivan ‘26 with 3 goals. Kieran Crossan ‘25 had 3 points as well (2G/1A). Ryan Kane ‘25 and Manny Strid ‘28 both ended up with 2 points each. Zach Sebra ‘25 contributed with a goal of his own. and Dylan Kenneson ‘25 and Owen Raymond ‘26 each with an assist.

Next up were the Patriots from Great Valley. Another rough one for the JV, falling 6-4. After only 1 prior game, we can already see the improvement in the JV squad. Leading the scoring with 2 points each were Peter Angelakos ‘27 (2G), Jason Kleiner ‘26 (1G/1A) and Connor Thornton ‘28 (1G/1A). Simeon Henrie ‘28 also added an assist.

Last up was the Varsity vs the Patriots in what ended up being a two day event. The game was on Thursday evening and after a quarter and 1:04 into the 2nd quarter the game was postponed due to weather. Our Tide was down 3-2. Friday after the game kicked back off, with your Tide taking full advantage. They closed out this game with a 14 - 6 victory, in dominating fashion. The Tide’s ride was fierce! Scoring was led by both Declan Sullivan ‘26 and Manny Strid ‘28 both with 6 points, 6 goals and 3 goals/3 assists, respectively. Kieran Crossan had 5 points on 1 goal and 4 assists. Zach Sebra, Ryan Kane, Dylan Kenneson, and Shane “NASCAR” Dugan ‘25 all had a goal! Matt Pascale ‘25 had 11 saves in the game!

Three games upcoming this week! The boys are home both Wednesday and Saturday against Pope John Paul II and Penncrest. PCL play starts Friday at Archbishop Carroll!

Tennis

The Devon Prep Tide tennis team finished last week with a 1-1 record in non league play. The team went to Shipley on Wednesday to take on a tough challenge, and came out with a loss. However, the Tide bounced back Thursday with a dominant 6-1 win against Bishop Shanahan. Some standout players from the week were Gustav ‘27, Andrew Schuenemann ‘27, and Gavin Ola ’25. The team starts PCL play this week, with three conference matches on the schedule.

Athlete of the Week

Andrew Schuenemann ‘27 & Gavin Old ‘25

Andrew Schuenemann (27) and Gavin Ola (25) have both gotten off to hot starts for the tennis team this spring, and last week was just an example of that. Both Andrew and Gavin have continued to improve on the court, consistently being high performers at practice. Last week, they had a 2-0 week in match play at doubles 3. Andrew and Gavin won a tight match at 3rd doubles against a tough Shipley team on Wednesday. They followed that up the next day with a dominant win at Shanahan, finishing the week a perfect 2-0. Both players competed hard to get wins for their team, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow throughout the season! Roll Tide!
