Basketball
This past week, Devon Prep’s sixth grade team played twice. First, they played St. Norbert’s A-team. Although the Tidecitos were leading at halftime, the Bulldogs caught fire from long range and ended up winning by nine. On Saturday, DP played Sacred Heart’s B-team. They won handily. The team awaits the start of the playoffs. Grady St. Denis’ ‘31 steady hand at point guard and Brayden Brandt’s ‘31 indomitable rebounding have been the story so far this season.
On Saturday, Devon Prep White went head to head with St. Denis Gray. Hayden Barbera led the way with 14 pts, 12 pts in the first half. Ethan Fabris ‘29 right behind with 13 pts. Declan Towell ’30 knocking down back to back 3 pointers. He had 6 points. Kellen Smith ‘30, Column Mooney ’29, and Antonio Tranquillo ‘30 were essential defensively, hustling throughout the game to keep us in it. Final score 31- 35 St. Dennis.
The Devon Prep Blue team played Sacred Heart Black Saturday, despite falling short. Equal offense from the Tide, Ryan Aquilante ‘30, Connor Monteleone ’30, Jack Bourdow ‘30, Antonio Tranquillo ’30, and Ethan Fabris ‘29 shared the ball and finished at the rim. It was a close game, Devon Prep lost by 3 points. Each game the Tide improved and the boys were proud of their efforts!
This last week the JV team only had one game against Lasalle. This was a rematch of a game earlier in the year. The first game went to Devon Prep but unfortunately the rematch went to Lasalle. It was a great game that Devon led late but could not hold onto the lead.
The varsity team had two games this week. The first game was a PCL game vs Lasalle. The team played very good basketball and came away with the victory. The second game of the week was vs Roman Catholic. This game was a match up of two of the top teams in the area and the game lived up to its billing. Roman had a double digit lead but the Tide kept on battling eventually tying the game late. The game then went into double overtime. Unfortunately Devon came up one basket short. This truly was a game that neither team deserved to lose. Both teams played very hard and fought to the very end.
The Freshmen Tide had the opportunity to play La Salle for the second time this season after playing them early on in December. In a back and forth game, the Tide found themselves down late and stormed back with a chance to tie the game late, but ultimately the final shot came after the buzzer and the team fell 58-55. The team was led by James Kaune ‘28 with 22 points .

Hockey
The Frozen Tide defeated Salesianum by a score of 5-2 on Friday night. Salesianum, entering the game with a league best 12-1 record as well as the longest win streak in the league, suffered their first loss in several months at the hands of Devon Prep.
Josh Vaughn ‘28, Talon Vernacchio ’27, and Kieran Crossan ‘25 scored goals for the Tide, but it was Braydon Russo’s ‘27 two goals in the second that opened up a three goal lead that the Tide held for almost half the game.
Clearly not used to coming from behind, Salesianum tried to intimidate and provoke the Devon team with high hits and questionable legal stick play, but, as usual, Devon held incredible composure on the ice as well as they held onto their three goal lead.
Aidan Wright ‘27 stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced in the win.
Swimming
Mid-term exams left the Tide swim team with only 2 athletes available to compete last Monday evening. But this didn’t stop Will Sutton ’27 and Andrew Rockich ’27 from rising to the challenge and pulling off a win at the Widener University pool, claiming victory over Archbishop Wood with a final score of 15-8.
Sutton crushed his previous personal best in the 100 yard Freestyle, dropping over a full second to finish in 57.97. He also logged a personal best in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:11.45.
Back in the pool and still recovering from a recent illness, Rockich’s determination and grit were on full display as he managed to log a respectable 2:27.52 in the 200 Freestyle, one of the meet’s most difficult races.
The team will face off with St. Joe’s Prep late dual meets of the season before heading off District Championships in mid February
Wrestling
On Friday evening, the Tide traveled to Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia. The Tide recently wrestled GFS last weekend at the Spartan Clash and came up victorious. Tonight the Tide had a tougher time with GFS and lost 38-18 due to injuries in the line up. The Tide received victories from Drew Buzbee ‘27 (114), Salvatore Albert ‘27 (121), and Xavier Smith ‘28 (127). The Tide also had great efforts from Christian Leckman ‘27 (133), Charlie Kleiner ‘28 (139), Shane Dugan ‘25 (160), and Jason Bushra ‘27 (172) even though they came up short on the losing end of their respective matches.
The Tide wrestling team traveled to the first ever Bristol Stomp Duals on Saturday morning to participate in three dual matches. Even with the injures, the Tide were able to compete and fill nine weight classes. The Tide wrestled West Philadelphia High School (lost 39-29), Abington Friends (lost 30-24), and had another rematch with Germantown Friends where the Tide won 30-23. Even though the Tide had to forfeit a handful of weight classes due to injuries and illnesses, the Tide wrestled well! On the day Drew Buzbee ‘27 (107/114) went 3-0, Salvatore Albert ‘27 (121) went 2-1, Christian Leckman ‘27 (133) went 2-1, Teddy Marvin ‘27 (139) went 1-2, Ben Veith ‘28 (145) went 2-1, Oliver Parenteau ‘28 (152) went 2-1, and Shane Dugan ‘25 (160) went 1-1. All said and done, the Tide competed well as a team and look forward to celebrating their Seniors next Wednesday with a more healthy line up! Overall on the day, the Tide went 1-2 as a team.
Athlete of the Week
Grady St. Denis ‘31
This weeks athlete of the week goes to 6th grade basketball player, Grady St. Denis. Grady provides a steady hand at the point guard position for the 10-1 sixth grade team. His steadiness under pressure, aggressive drives to the rim, and long range shooting all make him a tough cover. We look forward to watching Grady play during the three games at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic this weekend!
