Fall 2012
DEVON WELCOMES NEW FACULTY AND STUDENTS When Devon Prep students arrived on campus for the first day of the new school year they reconnected with old classmates, welcomed new ones, received their class schedules, and attended Mass together in the gym. They also greeted several new faculty members. Headmaster Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P., served as the principal celebrant of the opening day Mass. He welcomed everyone back to school and introduced the theme for the year, “Blessed are the Peacemakers, For they will be called Children of God.” Fr. Shea also thanked Athletic Director Mr. Mark Aquilante for his efforts in securing a beautiful new gym floor. Finally a new admissions director and several teachers were introduced to the students. Mr. Patrick Kane is Devon Prep’s new Admissions Director. Mr. Kane earned his BA in History from Villanova University where he also played varsity baseball. After graduating from Villanova he was signed by the Houston Astros as a free agent after the 1999 amateur draft and played second base for the Appalachian League Champion Martinsville Astros. More recently he served as a sales representative and subsequently general manager for PROSIT Print Solutions.
Devon Prep’s newest faculty and staff include: Mr. Dave Evans (back. left) and Mr. Patrick Kane; (front, left) Ms. Melissa Brown and Ms. Michelle Tedeschi.
Mr. David Evans teaches middle school religion, history and gym. He also serves as the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and coach of the indoor track and field team and the spring track and field team. Mr. Evans graduated from Devon Prep in 2008 and went on to study at St. Joseph’s University where he earned a BS in Elementary and Special Education and participated on the varsity track team. His teaching experience includes time at several elementary schools in Philadelphia including the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School. (continued on page 2)
“UP FOR A CAUSE” RAISES OVER $25,000 More than 120 Devon Prep upper school students stayed “Up for a Cause” to raise money for the internationally recognized St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) sponsored the event, a 12-hour night of fun and games which raised more than $25, 000 for the Hospital. The students spent the night in the school’s gymnasium participating in a variety of activities including basketball, dodgeball and soccer games and tournaments, board games, and ping pong. (continued on page 5)
DEVON DEDICATES PEACE POLE Devon Prep’s theme for the 2012-13 school year is “Blessed are the Peacemakers for They will be called Children of God.” In keeping with that theme Faculty Member Mr. R. Roger Mecouch requested that a Peace Pole be planted on Devon’s campus. Written on the Pole is the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 8 languages, including: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Latin and Hungarian. Each of the languages is or has been represented at Devon Prep. The entire student body as well as faculty and staff participated in a dedication ceremony in which the phrase was read aloud in each language, and the Pole was blessed by Headmaster Father James Shea. First erected in Japan in 1955 in response to the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Peace Poles are the official project of The World Peace Prayer Society. Nearly 200,000 handcrafted monuments have been placed in more than 180 countries on all continents in an effort to spread the simple and significant message. During the dedication ceremony, Mr. Mecouch explained that, “the placement of Devon Prep’s Peace Pole is such that every day when you come into Devon’s campus it reiterates that it is our job is to be peacemakers.” LINK TO YOUTUBE VIDEO : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3Yc-96E1Uw&list=PL522EF4CDAACD1FB6&index=7&feature=plpp_video

MR. PATRICK KANE, DEVON PREP ADMISSIONS DIRECTOR Embracing The Devon Difference Earlier in the year Fr. Shea announced the appointment of Mr. Patrick Kane as Devon Prep’s new Admissions Director. Mr. Kane is a graduate of Springfield High School where he was a standout baseball player. He also played baseball at Villanova University, where he earned his BS in history. After graduating from Villanova he was signed by the Houston Astros as a free agent after the 1999 amateur draft and played second base for the Appalachian League Champion Martinsville Astros. Recently he served as a sales representative and subsequently general manager for PROSIT Print Solutions. He currently lives in Springfield with his wife and family. Mr. Kane believes his past experiences give him an advantage in the recruitment field. He explained that the roots of sales are in scheduling your time wisely, being as organized as possible, maintaining a positive image, being persistent and being consistent. “Every day you have to do something to be better than you were the day before,” he said. “I try to challenge myself to find new ways to overcome obstacles, be personable, stay positive and keep it fun. To be successful in Admissions, all of those traits come into play.” One of those obstacles might be getting to know everyone in the Devon community as well as possible. As far as he’s concerned, the sooner the better. “If I don’t have a good relationship with the students, parents and faculty I cannot accomplish my primary goal which is to maintain and grow our enrollment,” said the Delaware County native. “I plan to attend as many area events as I can. Any time I’m in a social setting there is an opportunity for me to meet someone that could potentially be interested in Devon.”
Although he has only been at Devon Prep a few months, Mr. Kane has come to appreciate what many of us call The Devon Difference. He sees the family atmosphere and being a close knit community as our biggest strength. “Everyone cares so much about our school. There is a spirit of pride and integrity from top to bottom,” Mr. Kane said. “The strength here is our family (students, faculty, parents, Piarist Fathers). Each individual component does its part to make the whole better.” Believing that parents and students have an important role in the future success of our school Mr. Kane plans to solicit their help and ideas often. “Nobody knows our school better than the students that walk through the doors and attend classes,” he said. “The entire place is about their development and they see firsthand every day, what is so special about it. By the same token if we have parents that value their son’s time here then they can spread the word to their friends that are looking to make sound education decisions for their family.” Now that Mr. Kane has had the opportunity to get to know Devon Prep as well as present the school to potential parents and students, what does he think? “There is individualized teaching happening here,” he answered. “The Middle School is a safe and nurturing environment that is preparing the boys for High School. The High School is rigorous but students have many opportunities to stand out. Every young man is pushed to be the best he can be every day whether it’s in the classroom, on the ball field or in the community. Well-rounded men are walking out of these doors every year, more prepared than they ever thought they could be, for the challenges of college and life.”
NEW GYM FLOOR INSTALLED For most of the summer Devon’s gym was out of commission as it underwent a transformation that included cleaning, painting and most of all a brand new beautiful floor. See more photos at : http:// www.devonprep.com/2012/0 8/gym-floor/

SENIORS RECOGNIZED BY FRESHMEN EXPERIENCE ADVENTURE IN EDUCATION NATIONAL MERIT PROGRAM
Each year Devon Prep’s Ninth Graders participate in “Adventure in Education Day,” an interactive learning experience, sponsored by the Guidance Department, that takes place on an outdoor course in Newtown Square. The purpose of the program is to strengthen the developing life-long bond among the members of the Class of 2016 as they begin their high school journey. Adventure in Education Day involves traditional outdoor activities such as group games and a low ropes course. Most situations call for team problem solving, good communication, trust in one another, respect of individual differences within a group, and working together to fulfill the task created. The goal is not competition but cooperation. They learn to solve problems in a group creatively and effectively, and to take responsibility for the outcomes of their decisions. Many of the participants said the day was fun and challenging. In addition to getting to know the members of their class they learned to trust one another and work together. For more photos: http://www.devonprep.com/2012/09/ninthgrade-adventure-in-education-day/
Congratulations to seniors, from left, Michael A. Tolvaisa, Rafael Suero, Thomas F. Seykora and Paul R. Johnson who were named COMMENDED STUDENTS by the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. More than 1.5 million students in over 22,000 U.S. high schools enter the Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Commended students are among 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® who were recognized for their outstanding academic promise.
TWO SENIORS ACHIEVE EAGLE SCOUT RANK Congratulations to Seniors Kevin Fulmer (left) and Thomas Seykora who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boys Scouting Program. To achieve the Eagle Scout rank, a Scout must be active in his unit for at least six months as a Life Scout, earn a total of 21 merit badges, including 12 that are required, serve in a position of responsibility in his unit for a period of six months, and complete a service project that demonstrates both leadership and a commitment to duty. Additional requirements include demonstrating Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Law in everyday life, taking part in a unit leader conference, and successfully completing a board of review. For his Eagle Scout project Kevin designed, constructed and installed outdoor Stations of the Cross on Devon Prep’s campus, near Calasanctius Hall. For his project Thomas organized the first Blind Track Invitational track meet at the Overbrook School for the Blind which included both sighted and visuallyimpaired runners.
The Stations of the Cross can be seen on Devon’s campus, near Calasanctius Hall.

(UP FOR A CAUSE, continued from page 1) They were not permitted to use electronic devices such as mp3 players or hand held video games, nor were they permitted to sleep. They were, however, encouraged to eat, since donated food was plentiful. Each Devon Prep student needed to raise at least $175 in order to participate. CAP began “Up for a Cause” 11 years ago to raise money for charity. Devon Prep was the first high school in the country to attempt this event. In the years Devon Prep students have been “staying up,” they raised over $250,000 for hospitals that care for ill children. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (http://www.stjude.org/) was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas to find cures, through research and treatment, for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. On average, 5,700 active patients visit the hospital each year, most of whom are treated on an outpatient basis. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. SOLAR CAR TEAM TAKES SECOND IN NATIONAL RACE Devon Prep’s Solar Car Team took Second Place in the national 2012 Solar Car Challenge at the Texas Motor Speedway this summer. Their solar powered car, named “Sol TIDE,” operates with four 38 pound batteries powered by five solar panels. Decorated with the school’s logo and colors of blue and gold, Sol TIDE measures 4.96 meters long, 1.65 meters wide and 1.25 meters high. Competing against 11 teams from around the country in the Classic Division, Sol TIDE completed 270 laps and 405 miles. Their best racing speed was 44.6 mph and they averaged 22.1 mph throughout the four day event. Captain and driver Jacob Riedel, and his teammates Chris Clayton, Soham Bharne, Rich Gargano and Ben Conser, as well as their advisor Mr. Eric Riedel and chaperone Mr. Scott Conser, did a great job earning a trophy for the second year in a row. Chris Clayton also received the “Order of the Solar Cell Award” presented to those extremely special people who believe in high school solar car racing, and the great students who make it happen. Throughout the year the team was assisted by eight additional Devon Prep students who also worked on the car: Jake Kampman, Pat Kinsella, Brian Koskinen, Antonio Muscarella, Will Culbertson, Mike Horbowy, Russell Emery and Nick Ippoliti. Last year Devon Prep was the first and only Pennsylvania high school team to compete in the Solar Car Challenge which draws teams from across the US and Puerto Rico who design, engineer, build, and race roadworthy solar cars. They earned fourth place in the 2011 Challenge “There is nothing like working on something for a year and finally seeing what you have accomplished,” said team captain Jacob Riedel. “The team members learned so much by competing with other teams. I have learned more than I could have imaged from aerodynamics to circuitry.” See more photos at: http://www.devonprep.com/2012/07/solar-car-team-takes-second-place-in-2012-solar-car-challenge/ 5
STUDENTS SPEND SUMMER VACATION SERVING THE POOR IN KENTUCKY When asked “what did you do over your summer vacation” at least 24 Devon Prep students and five students from Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Strafford, can say they did some good. These 29 students along with six adult chaperones travelled 13 hours to the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky to do service in one of the poorest areas of the country. In this area the poverty rate is 3X that of the nation. The purpose of the trip was to assist individuals and families with various projects including: landscaping for St. Martha's Church and for members of the church; cleaning and prep work to help the Piarist school get ready for the new school year; and moving and clean-up of materials belonging to neighboring St. Luke's Church that had been destroyed by a tornado. They also spent time painting the interior and exterior of a resident’s home and demolishing a deck and stairs and building a new deck and ramp. In addition the group donated over $1300 to the Piarist Outreach program, the Piarist School, and St. Martha's Church. According to Mr. Joe Lewis, Devon Prep faculty member and the trip coordinator, “Our students conducted themselves in such a way that brought about many a compliment from the people we met. They were touched by our students’ hard work, good cheer, and willingness to help.”
SENIOR PARTICIPATES IN BOYS NATION, MEETS PRESIDENT OBAMA This past summer Senior Kevin Fulmer represented the state of Pennsylvania in Washington DC as part of the American Legion’s BOYS NATION program. For eight days young leaders from around the country were educated on the structure and function of federal government. The young law-makers caucused at the beginning of the session, then organized into committees and conducted hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. The week of government training also included lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators met with elected officials from their home states as well as President Barack Obama. In addition to the all expense paid trip to Washington, Kevin was also awarded a $1000 college scholarship. “I am incredibly grateful to the American Legion for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “And to my parents and brothers for supporting me, and Devon Prep for preparing me for this experience.”
CAP COLLECTS SCHOOL SUPPLIES
The owner of the house that was painted summed it up nicely when he told one of the chaperones, "If all churches did what you done, there would be no problems." See more photos: http:// www.devonprep.com/2012/08/summer-mission-trip-to-kentucky/ Throughout the summer Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) conducted a School Supplies Drive for St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia. They collected over 4500 items including: notebooks, pencils, crayons, pens, folders, backpacks, copybooks, erasers, index cards and just about anything else needed to start school.
6
The donations were sorted, counted, boxed and delivered to St. Elizabeth’s by several members of CAP including those pictured above, Junior James O’Shea (left), Senior Kevin Fulmer (center), and Junior Mike McKenna. The supplies were then distributed to school age children during St. Elizabeth’s annual Community Block Party. More than 200 families attend the block party each year.
PEANUT BUTTER MEETS JELLY In mid-September more than 40 freshmen from Devon Prep and Notre Dame Academy spent an afternoon together getting to know each other and helping those less fortunate. They participated in “Peanut Butter Meets Jelly,” a service project sponsored by Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP). Gathering in Devon Prep’s dining hall the ninth graders used donated bread, grape jelly and peanut butter to make more than 200 sandwiches. Although the process was sometimes messy the end result was well worth it as new friendships were made along with all those sandwiches. The food was donated to the Patrician Society’s Emergency Food Cupboard in Norristown, a non-sectarian food pantry which serves more nearly 1,300 area families. HALLOWEEN PARTY Due to Hurricane Sandy, the Middle School celebrated Halloween a few days later than most years, but that didn’t dampen their spirits. They held the annual Halloween Party and Costume Competition on All Souls day instead. And there were plenty of creative, funny and creepy costumes to go around. As always, Mrs. I dressed up and this year Mr. Evans joined the fun as well. After much deliberation three winners were chosen, two sixth graders and a seventh grader. ImPACT TEST Devon Prep uses the ImPACT Test program to evaluate head injuries. This non-invasive, computerized exam is utilized in many professional, collegiate, and high school sports programs across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. The test is being administered to all Devon Prep students through the Guidance and Health Department. If you have not done so yet, please complete and return the Consent Form as soon as possible so your son can be tested. Please address any questions to Mrs. Denise Gavin at dgavin@devonprep.com or 610-688-7337, ext. 112.
