During Devon Prep’s Class of 2012 Commencement, each of the speakers con‐ gratulated the graduates on their accomplishments and success. They also en‐ couraged the 49 young men to use what they’ve learned at Devon Prep to give back.

Salutatorian Chase Weber urged his fellow graduates to use their talents and skills to improve the world. “We have a duty to use the instruc on we received and the skills we mastered to make the world a be er place,” he said. “Looking around this room I see future pioneers from all fields of study. The world is fac‐ ing a challenging me and as future leaders we have an obliga on to influence the world for the be er by maintaining our integrity and the morals that Devon has ins lled in us. We will influence the world for be er or worse,” he con n‐ ued. “And it is up to each one of us to decide which of these paths we will take. Devon has opened the doorway to endless possibili es. How we deal with these possibili es is what will decide the legacy of the Class of 2012.”

Collec vely the Class of 2012 earned over $7.4 million in college scholarships. In addi on they received more than 200 acceptances to over 100 colleges and universi es, including Princeton, Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania, Ford‐ ham, Colgate, Tu s, NYU, Notre Dame, Case Western Reserve, Drexel, Penn State, and the United States Military Academy.

More than 35% (18) are AP Scholars, 11 are AP Scholars with Dis nc on. Ten are Na onal Merit Scholars, six are finalists and three are scholarship winners. Eight of these young men are Eagle Scouts and several will go on to par cipate Con nued on page 3

Nearly 20% of Devon Prep’s Class of 2012 achieved the highest rank in the Boy Scou ng of America program, the rank of Eagle Scout. Eight Devon Prep seniors are among the 2 million men who pursued and achieved this dis nc on in the past 100 years, since its incep on in 1912. Each year about 5% of Boy Scouts do the same. It’s a long and challenging process, but for Ryan Fulmer, Sean Gillin, Daniel Lio a, James Lockard, Ma hew Magno a, Hugh Phelan, Adam Swi , and David Welsh, it was well worth it.

DEVON PREP GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

DEVON STUDENTS VISIT FRANCE & GERMANY

SPANISH STUDENTS VISIT DEVON

During Easter break 13 Devon Prep students and three faculty chaperones, led by French teacher Mrs. Laura Mondon, travelled to Europe for a tour of France.

They began their tour in Caen, the capital and largest city in Basse Normandie where they visited the World War II Memorial. In Ba‐ yeux they saw the Tapisserie De Bayeux, a seventy‐meter strip of embroidered linen that recounts the story of the Norman con‐ quest of England, and the Cathédrale Notre‐Dame, the first home of the famed tapestry.

During the spring semester Devon Prep hosted 18 Spanish exchange students and three of their teachers from Colegio Cristo Rey, a Piarist School in Zaragoza, Spain. The 12 young women and six young men, ages 14 and 15, spent two very busy weeks a ending classes at Devon Prep and visi ng Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC and Lancaster County. They also a ended a lacrosse game, a Sixers’ game and a performance of The Phantom of the Opera. They shopped at the King of Prussia Mall and many of them visited the Jersey shore with their host families. According to the students their trip to America was in‐ teres ng, exci ng and fun.

Devon Prep German Teacher Mr. Steve Lukens and a number of Devon students travelled to Germany for several weeks this sum‐ mer. They le on June 4th and headed to Heidelberg, Tubingen, and Stu gart where they visited the Albertus Magnus Gymnasium (AMG). AMG has conducted an exchange program with Devon Prep for more than 20 years. Mr. Hermann Rack coordinates the exchange program for AMG.

DEVON STUDENTS AND TEACHER WIN AWARDS AT REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR Devon Prep Sixth Grader Ma hew Siracusa and Ninth Grader Russell Emery, who won first place ribbons in the Chester County Science Research Compe on, both went on to win medals at the Delaware Valley Science Fair (DVSF) at the Greater Philadel‐ phia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. Devon Prep Science Teacher Mr. Roger Mecouch was also recognized at the DVSF. Over 1,000 students from Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware competed in the DVSF.

Ma hew won a Second Place Award in the Computer Science category for students in grades 6 to 8. Siracusa also won the Broadcom Masters Middle School Award for his project “Prac cal Applica ons of Microso Kinect.” In the Chester Coun‐ ty Fair Siracusa won First Place and Best of Show in the Comput‐ er Science Category.

Russell received a Third Place Award in the Engineering category for 9th graders. He was invited to par cipate in a Nanotechnolo‐ gy Science Fair at the University of Pennsylvania in October. Rus‐ sell also received the following awards for his project “Rail Gun Science”: Third Place Award from the Ins tute for Electrical and Electronics Engineering , Inc.; Honorable Men on from the American Society of Naval Engineers; United States Navy/ Marine Corps Award; NANO/BIO Interface Center Award; and United States Air Force Award. In the Chester County Compe ‐ on he won First Place and Second Best of Show in the Engineer‐ ing Category.

In addi on, Mr. Mecouch received the DuPont Excellence in Teaching Award for the high school division. This recogni on included a monetary award and a trip to Pi sburgh for the Intel Interna onal Science and Engineering Fair (IISE) in May. The IISE Fair is an interna onal compe on, where high school freshmen through seniors from 65 foreign countries and 48 states compete for scholarships and prizes valued in the millions.

Mr. Mecouch said he was honored to be recognized as a teacher. “But I’m really proud of Ma hew and Russell for doing so well in

the compe ons,” he explained. “As a sixth grader and ninth grader they have several more years of science fairs ahead of them. If they choose to con nue compe ng I expect they will be even more successful in the future.”

In his project “Prac cal Applica ons of Microso Kinect “ Ma hew tried to determine if Kinect Speech Recogni on could be used in an educa onal game and whether gender or age would affect the accuracy, and if so, could anything be done to improve the accuracy. He used the 24 Challenge game for his project.

In his project “Rail Gun Science” Russell tried to determine how current and voltage affect the speed of a projec le launched us‐ ing railgun technology. He also tested the efficiency of the design as a model for scaling up the technology. Russell built the railgun using a 12 volt ba ery, a large electroly c capacitor and a relay. The relay allows the capacitor to discharge into itself or into a set of rails where a projec le will complete the circuit and move to the point of least current, nearest the end of the rails.

Delaware Valley Science Fairs, Inc. (DVSF) was founded in 1949. It is one of the oldest and largest Science Fairs in the country. The Fairs were designed as a vehicle for s mula ng interest in Sci‐ ence, Technology, Engineering and Mathema cs (STEM) among students in middle and high schools in the tri‐state area.

From Baseball to NHS John LaPrise is Grateful for His Devon Prep Experience John LaPrise is an excellent athlete and a good student with a strong Catholic faith. He came to Devon Prep in ninth grade and in the four years since he has gained a top notch educa on, strong friendships, compe ve athle c skills and a deep apprecia on for his Devon Prep experience.

“This was the best decision of my life,” John said. “Mr. Aquilante had a lot to do with it because he’s a really great coach. And my parents obviously were really interested in the educa on,” he explained. “I think Devon has allowed me to mature and grow as a person and a player. People here really helped me to stay under the radar when I needed to, and when I was ready to showcase myself they helped me do that too.”

According to Mr. Mark Aquilante, Devon Prep’s Varsity Baseball Coach, the 6’ 1”, 170 lb shortstop, has quick hands and a great feel for the game. He ba ed .457 with 21 RBI's in 21 games as well as four home runs. An outstanding defensive shortstop, he was named the Bicentennial Athle c League’s 2012 Baseball Player of the Year .

In the fall John will play baseball at Division I University of Virginia. UVA was his first choice and he was heavily recruited by the school. He’s excited about playing there. “It’s the best of both worlds,” he said. “Awesome baseball, and awesome academics.”

Through much of his senior season scouts from several major league teams a ended Devon Prep games to watch John play. He was pro‐ jected to be dra ed between the 5th and 15th rounds of the Major League Baseball Dra .

“It was totally exci ng. I never expected that,” John said. “Although this is what I‘ve been working towards, I didn’t think it would come this early. It didn’t make me nervous. I just played the game and tried to help my team to win.”

For the TIDE John was a leader and team player. "If he didn't get any good pitches, he's was willing to take a walk and pass it to the next guy,” said Coach Aquilante. “He has a team‐first approach."

Baseball wasn’t the only sport John played while at Devon. As a freshman and sophomore he played soccer. He also played basket‐ ball for three years but decided to stop in his senior year to concen‐ trate solely on baseball. “I needed to get stronger for baseball. In the off season I worked hard on that,” he said.

When asked what team he would like to play for if he were dra ed by the majors, his answer was not surprising. “I’m open to any team that would be interested in me,” he said. “But obviously the Phillies, since they are my favorite team. That would be awesome.”

In addi on to being a standout ball player John was also an honor student, a member of the Campus Ministry, and a member of Devon’s Community Ac on Program (CAP). He was inducted into the Na onal Honor Society as a senior, an achievement of which he is very proud.

“I definitely have to work hard at academics and ge ng into the Na onal Honor Society was one of my goals,” acknowledged the 18 year old. “It was so cool. Several of my friends were inducted with me, so that was really exci ng.”

As a student and athlete John has shown leadership, strength, com‐ mitment, and compassion. You’d be hard pressed to find a fellow student or adult at Devon Prep who doesn’t like him.

He’s proud of his accomplishments but quick to give credit to those who helped him along the way. He is especially grateful for the op‐ portunity to a end Devon Prep.

“I think I am who I am today because of Devon. All the friendships I have and just the atmosphere there is unbelievable,” the future Cavalier said. “For me it was like a second home. I know the guys in my group of friends are going to be friends for the rest of our lives. You can’t even explain the feeling that you have being a part of something so unique as this place.

“I think that being in an all‐ boys environment helped me because I didn’t get distracted. It has always been school, sports, friends and family for me,” John explained. “I was always so busy I didn’t really have me for much else. I had great friends and a good school. That’s all I really needed.” John LaPrise was featured in a Philadelphia Inquirer ar cle h p://www.philly.com/philly/sports high_school/20120509_LaPrise_a_pa ent_leader_for_Devon_Prep.html

and he was named Main Line Athlete of the Week h p://www.mainlinemedianews.com/ar cles/2012/05/16/sports/ doc4 3b8f76e6e0440937412.txt?viewmode=fullstory
