HE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL brings about a pretty magical feeling in a kid. All the stress of homework, grades and early bedtimes instantly melts away with that final bell. For parents, though, the last day of school can be the start of stress. How are we going to keep our children busy, entertained and engaged for 83 whole days (in my district, anyway), while trying to keep up with all our grown-up responsibilities and chores? Here at DFWChild, we may not be able to adjust your work schedule or make the laundry disappear, but we can help with your family’s activity agenda. In fact, that’s one of our specialties. Our team has assembled a guide to hundreds of destinations across Dallas-Fort Worth—and more for a quick road trip—so you can give your child a mind-stretching, heart-pumping, funinducing summer. Whatever your kid’s personality and age, there’s something here they’ll love. My son loves escape rooms, and I was excited to find new spots where he can solve puzzles and crack codes. There’s also plenty of things listed here that he has never tried, and I now have plenty of ideas to help him develop new hobbies and interests. Many of the activities we found will appeal to moms and dads, too, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to bond. In addition to our 2022 summer fun list, this issue includes other resources for parents: our comprehensive private school listings, a map of public districts across the area, and a compilation of charter school options—because while kids are focused on the carefree days ahead, we parents know that the upcoming school year is really just around the corner. I hope you’re able to use the information in these pages to create many happy memories. While work and laundry can feel urgent, seeing our kids explore and play is what really matters.

Art Museums The AMON CARTER MUSEUM OF ART lends a hand in focusing your kid’s attention by offering activity tote bags to use during your visit (available at the information desk) and activities at the Family Pop-up Space on the second floor. Be sure to register in advance for the monthly programs for every age group, from babies on up. Admission is always free, so come see the three new exhibitions debuting this June. start. Register for the many classes and workshops held in the museum’s Center for Creative Connections (C3), a dedicated studio space with art-making programs tailored to each age group—babies, toddlers, children, teens and adults. And that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Plus, general admission to the museum is free. Dallas, 214/922-1200; dma.org The KIMBELL ART MUSEUM is a must-visit. Now approaching its 50th anniversary, the Kimbell is renowned as much for its art collections as its architecture, with buildings designed by Louis Kahn and Renzo Piano. To help your kids connect with the art on view, pick up a family guide (each themed around animals, landscape, portraits or sculpture) from the Piano Pavilion education studios. Fort Worth, 817/332-8451; kimbellart.org In the heart of the Fort Worth Cultural District stands the MODERN

Show kids that art extends beyond the canvas at

YMCA OF METROPOLITAN DALLAS Serving children of all ages across 8 counties in North Texas At the Y, kids are our specialty! For over 135 years, the Y’s goal has been to get families active and involved, regardless of their income, and we pride ourselves on having something for everyone! The Y is often called “America’s Swim Teacher”, basketball was invented at a YMCA facility, and the first Father’s Day celebration happened at the Y. Our history is rich, but our mission doesn’t live in the past. We celebrate our ability to adapt to what our communities need. When our doors closed in March of 2020 due to the pandemic, we offered free childcare to essential workers, hosted food and household item distributions, blood drives, baby

depots, and meal giveaways. That work, a program we call the Catalyst Initiative, continues today to serve our communities, with over 100,000 people served in food distributions, almost 4,000 units of blood donated, and over 100,000 pounds of clothing collected since the program’s inception. We are focused on eliminating drowning in North Texas, creating safe environments to build strong, confident youth, and ensuring the Y and our programs are welcoming and safe for all. Through our 16 YMCA facilities, 2 camps, and hundreds of program sites, the Y’s work is felt throughout the community daily. Our mission: To put Christian values into practice

through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We feel strongly about the for all part of our mission as we believe that everyone should have access to community, regardless of income. Therefore, financial assistance is available for almost every one of our programs. This work is possible thanks to the donors and volunteers who give their time and financial support so generously. We invite you and your family to come be a part of the community we serve; it’s 200,000 people strong each year and spans Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hopkins, Palo Pinto, and Rockwall counties.
