AE LIU co-founded Leatherology

with her brother in 2008 to elevate and celebrate everyday life through beautiful leather goods. We caught up with the Preston Hollow mom (Kressa is 5, and Max is 3; Liu is married to Kurt Johnson) to chat about her neighborhood. DFWChild: What makes Preston Hollow great for families? Rae Liu: We love the mature trees, convenience to downtown and proximity to great schools. We live close to NORTHAVEN TRAIL, which is being extended to connect to White Rock Trail, so there are lots of great walking options. 6

july 2021 / dfwchild.com

C: Where else do you go to get outdoors? RL: We love the playground at WHITE ROCK LAKE PARK. On weekends, we do picnics from a hilltop that overlooks the lake. We also love PRESTON HOLLOW PARK. Lots of children go there after school, so my kids have tons of impromptu play dates with classmates. C: What other Dallas destinations do you frequent as a family? RL: I’ve started taking my children to the SAINT MICHAEL’S FARMERS MARKET on the weekends. It’s off Dallas North Tollway and Northwest Highway. They have truly local farmers, ranchers and artisans. I can get locally grown produce, and the kids get ice cream or popsicles. We also love going to DALLAS

ARBORETUM’S RORY MEYERS CHILDREN’S ADVENTURE GARDEN, PEROT MUSEUM OF NATURE AND SCIENCE, and KLYDE WARREN PARK.

C: Where do you go for self-care? RL: I love going to the garden store to clear my head. NORTH HAVEN GARDENS is my favorite. VALLEY HOUSE GALLERY & SCULPTURE GARDEN off of Spring Valley is also really special. Manicures at home are another nice treat! I use the Cherry app. C: What other shops do you love in Preston Hollow? RL: Now that kids’ birthday parties are happening again, THE TOY MAVEN at Preston Royal Village

is our weekend go-to. They have an incredible selection of toys, and they gift wrap everything for free. The CAMP store off Walnut Hill is also fantastic. It’s an experiential toy store with lots of activities, so my kids always have a blast. C: How do you stay active? RL: Gardening. I’ve been trying to get my kids interested since they were super young! They love helping me plant seeds, bulbs and also weeding—because it means they get to dig! C: Which area restaurants top your list? RL: I’m excited to try MERIDIAN, the new Brazilian restaurant. I’m also looking forward to going back to favorites like TEI-AN, HOMEWOOD DALLAS and LUCIA. ROYAL CHINA and PRINCI ITALIA are our versions of comfort food. Before COVID, we took the kids to CINDI’S DELI every weekend. They have a kid-friendly menu, and my kids love the coloring pages that they provide. C: How do you give back to the community? RL: We are fans and supporters of NORTH TEXAS FOOD BANK and THE FAMILY PLACE, which helps family violence victims. C: Have you discovered any hidden gems in your neighborhood? RL: There’s the BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF DALLAS off Stults Road. On Sunday mornings, they host an amazing Thai food market— everything is just delicious. I’m so excited that it’s reopened!

Bowman and her family love exploring all their neighborhood has to offer. Best family restaurant: MI COCINA at Highland Park Village. We love sitting outdoors, and the restaurant is family friendly. Plus, the frozen margaritas and Mambo Taxis are delicious! 77 Highland Park Village, Highland Park; 214/521-6426, micocina.com. Favorite local park: LAKESIDE PARK is lovely for a walk or a bike ride. The kids love seeing birds in and around the water. I love the quiet open space; there are lots of benches spread out for you to sit down and read. 4601 Lakeside Drive, Highland Park; 214/521-4161, hptx.org. Favorite family outing: We love to play tennis, and the ABBOTT PARK court is very popular right now. It’s right by a playground, and the kids love to alternate between hitting the ball on the court and running around the park. 4814 Abbott Drive, Highland Park; 214/521-4161, hptx.org. Go-to for going out: MESERO at Inwood Village is a fun place for dinner and drinks. If we are feeling festive, we’ll cross the street to INWOOD TAVERN—a nice spot for after-dinner drinks, with music and an outdoor patio. Mesero, 5330 W. LAKEWOOD

R

EA FOSTER loves that her neighborhood near White Rock Lake “provides the perfect blend of a bustling city with the slower neighborhood feel.” The executive director of Teach for America DFW shares her favorite spots to spend time with her family (including husband Franklin Foster II and son Franklin Foster III) in Lakewood. Family restaurant: TACO JOINT. We love it because 1) we just love tacos, 2) it has a chill vibe, and 3) it’s close to our Saturday activities, like classes at Dallas Swim Kids. 6434 E. Mockingbird Lane, Lakewood; 214/821-8226, thetacojoint.com. Park scene: My son loves LAKEWOOD PARK because it has many areas to explore—play equipment, open green space, creeks where he can look for creatures, and trails for riding his bike. 7143 Williamson Road, Lakewood; 214/670-4100, dallasparks.org. Family outing: One of our favorite things is to ride our bikes from our house to White Rock Lake, jump on the SANTA FE TRAIL, take it to WHITE ROCK ALE HOUSE for a pit stop on the patio for snacks and drinks, and then go back. Santa Fe Trail; dallascounty.org; White Rock Ale House, 7331 Gaston Ave., Dallas; 214/989-7570, whiterockalehouse.com. Girls’ night out: My go-to girls’ night is PIZZERIA TESTA on Greenville Avenue. They pivoted well in the pandemic with an outdoor patio and truly spacious tables that made me feel comfortable. 3525 Greenville Ave., Dallas; 469/620-2266, pizzeriatesta.com. For self-care: I’m a spa girl through and through, and by far, my favorite in Dallas is THE JOULE. My more budget-friendly self-care option is walking to the edge of a dock on WHITE ROCK LAKE, pausing and exhaling. I feel grounded and closely connected to God when I’m in the presence of water. The Spa at the Joule, 1530 Main St., Dallas; 214/261-4555, thejouledallas.com; White Rock Lake, 8300 E. Lawther Drive, Dallas; 214/670-4100, dallasparks.org. How she gives back: I am very involved in improving the city through organizations including LEADERSHIP DALLAS, a leadership development program, and JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS. Leadership Dallas; 214/746-6673, dallaschamber.org; Junior League of Dallas, 8003 Inwood Road, Dallas; 214/357-8822, jld.net.

Imagine Only Rain Water Down the Stormwater Drains Leaves and grass washed down the city’s storm drainage system causes algae to grow. Large algae blooms deplete water of life giving oxygen for aquatic animals and plant life. YARD WORK TIPS: Sweeping or blowing yard waste into storm drains can result in a fine of up to $2000.

• Never sweep or blow yard waste into the street or down storm drains. • Sweep or blow grass clippings back onto your yard because it acts as fertilizer. • Fallen leaves can be mulched and left on the lawn. • Leaves can be bagged and stored until bulk waste collection day in your neighborhood. • Or compost leaves and grass clippings turning them into wonderful natural fertilizer Contact City of Dallas Stormwater Management at Stormwater@DallasCityHall.com or 214-948-4022 to learn more or to request a presentation for your organization, school or business.

Plan: parent training and advocacy

s the president of Reunion Tower and mom of three, DUSTI GROSKREUTZ TAYLOR is a woman on the go. Her responsibilities keep her back and forth between Dallas and Rockwall, a city to Big D’s east and the community where she and husband J are raising Kain, Kylie and Lyrik. Fave family restaurant: KYOTO JAPANESE STEAK HOUSE for hibachi. My kids enjoy watching their food being dramatically prepared right in front of them, and then using their mouths to catch the broccoli the chef throws while he is cooking our veggies. Kyoto Japanese Steak House, 1599 Laguna Drive, Rockwall; 214/771-0688, kyotorockwall.com. Best family outing: We like to visit HAM ORCHARDS in Terrell. We can pick peaches and then have fresh, homemade peach ice cream. 11939 County Road 309, Terrell; 972/524-2028, hamorchard.com. Go-to for going out: Working for REUNION TOWER, that is always my favorite girls’ night spot—because we host so many Tower After Hours events. And my friends love getting to check out the views from the GeO-Deck. For nights out closer to home or date nights, I love ZANATA on the square in Rockwall. Recently, we discovered GIOVANNI at THE HARBOR ROCKWALL and love the ambiance. Reunion Tower, 300 Renuion Blvd. E., Dallas; 214/712-7040, reuniontower.com; Zanata, 202 E. Rusk St., Rockwall; 972/722-2822, zanatas.com; Giovanni at The Harbor Rockwall, 2091 Summer Lee Dr., Suite 111, Rockwall; 469/769-1968, giovannirockwalltx.com. Get active: CLUB PILATES is my passion; the instructors are amazing, and I love the whole mind-and-body wellness philosophy. And my kids are always asking to go to URBAN AIR trampoline park to do flips. Club Pilates, 3616 Lakeview Pkwy., Rowlett; 214/235-3582, clubpilates.com; Urban Air Adventure Park, 5757 State Highway 205, Rockwall; 469/912-3117, urbanairtrampolinepark.com. Give back: We donate and spend our time at HELPING HANDS THRIFT STORE. I love that the money stays in the local community and provides food, shelter and care to families in need. Years ago, I became a member of Executive Women’s International, where I have met so many fabulous ladies while supporting literacy-focused philanthropic initiatives and scholarships. Helping Hands Thrift Store, 950 Williams St., Rockwall; 972/771-1655, helpinghands. com; Executive Women’s International, ewiconnect.com.

J

AMIE TERRY knows her way around the kitchen. The Frisco mom shares her baking skills through JUST CAKE IT!, a home-based custom dessert business. Terry tells us more about her bakery, plus what she and her family—including husband Jerry and their children Taiylar, 24, Jada, 21, Tory (who has spastic quadriplegia, a form of cerebral palsy), 19, and Jayla, 7—love about their community. DFWChild: What makes Frisco great for families? Jamie Terry: People are friendly and neighborly. There are local parks and activities for people of all abilities. We have many restaurants and shops. Can you tell I love to eat and shop? (Laughs.) C: Speaking of delicious offerings in Frisco, tell us how you got started with your bakery. JT: After my youngest daughter was born, I took some cake decorating classes and fell in love. We decided to start Just Cake It!—and Tory was a major driving factor. I used to work as a medical assistant, and my husband is a teacher. It was a struggle to get off work for our son’s doctor’s appointments and therapy sessions. We decided I wouldn’t go back to work [outside the home], so I had could manage his care and assist with the costs. C: What local resources have been helpful in caring for Tory? JT: LIFEPATH SYSTEMS [for individuals with certain challenges] has been a blessing. And FRISCO ISD, SCOTJUST CAKE IT!

cKinney is full of greenery and life,” shares mom JASMINE MITCHELL. “Anywhere you go, you are sure to be immersed in nature’s beauty.” That beauty is one of many reasons Mitchell (a registered nurse at Texas Health Frisco) and husband Brandon (a field rep for Dixon Golf) chose this community to raise son Karter, 2. CELEBRATION PARK

LENDA RODRIGUEZ calls Allen the “perfect fit” for her family, which includes husband Robert, a T-Mobile store manager, and their children, 5-year-old Karlee and 10-month-old Manolo. Rodriguez, a process improvement specialist with Texas Workforce Solutions, says the community was significantly smaller when she moved to Allen in 2006; today the city’s population tops 105,000. “The people are wonderful,” Rodriguez says. “We love the life we can provide our kids here.” Best family dining: This isn’t easy to choose, but our fave is HEDARY’S MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT. They are very friendly; their service is superb, and the food is exquisite. 103 W. Belmont Drive, Allen; 214/383-9588, hedarys.com. Favorite park: CELEBRATION PARK, hands down. This park is so beautiful and big that the city of Allen hosts its annual Fourth of July celebrations there. It has sports areas—tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields—a playground for all ages and abilities, with tables and shaded areas; a big splash pad; a running and bike trail; plus a couple of ponds in case you want to sit and fish. It also has pavilions you can use to celebrate a birthday or cook out. With all the green space you never run out of things to do. We purposely bought our home within walking distance of Celebration Park, and we are there every day. 701 Angel Parkway, Allen; 214/509-4700, cityofallen.org. For cooling off: We love the ice cream shops around town. Our favorites are LA SIRENA PALETERIA and ABEJITA. Anytime you go, they’re going to be packed—but they have all your cravings. La Sirena Paleteria, 204 N. Greenville Ave., Suite 220, Allen; 972/332-8339, facebook. com/lasirenapaleteria. Abejita Ice Cream, 711 18th St., Plano; 972/841-9735, search Abejita Ice Cream on facebook.com. ALL-COMMUNITY How they give back: We donate our OUTREACH—FOOD time and resources to ALL COMMUNITY PANTRY OUTREACH–FOOD PANTRY. We love this organization and what it does for the community. 801 E. Main St., Allen; 972/7279131, acocares.org. Why Allen is great for families: Allen feels like a small town. Our neighbors still know and care about each other. The schools are great, and the city is active—with wakeboarding, skateboard parks and other spaces. We also have arts, pretty landscapes and places for family outings.

rosper quickly felt like home to LAUREL CARAS (a Wells Fargo consultant, yoga instructor and photographer) her recruiter husband Ryan and their daughter Finlee, who turns 5 next month. They moved to the area in 2019, part of a big boom: the local population went up 158% in less than a decade. Family outing: Hands down, our favorite place is SILO PARK. From the food trucks to the live music and outdoor space for the kids to play, it’s the place we tell everyone about. 380 W. Broadway St., Prosper; 214/725-1104, siloparktx.com. UENA PAZ MONTERO—also known as BonBon—is a travel consultant and blogger who runs Bon-Bon Voyage. But as many places as Montero, husband Paul, 11-year-old son Nicholas and 10-year-old daughter Arianna have been, they love their home: “We’re so lucky to live in Plano,” Montero says. Family dining: Some of our favorites are URBAN CRUST and LITTLE ROME, but BELLAGREEN is on top with its nothing-but-fresh ingredients and delicious, healthy meals. Urban Crust, 1006 E. 15th St., Plano, 972/509-1400, urbancrust.com. Little Rome, 2707 W. 15th St., Suite B, Plano; 972/449-7071, thelittlerome.com. The trail follows a creek through central Plano and has several parks along with it. BIG LAKE PARK with its recently renovated embankments is beautiful! HAGGARD PARK in downtown Plano is also a favorite; lots of shade, historic buildings nearby, a gazebo, a playground and a small lake with a bridge. It is absolutely charming. Date night: One thing is for sure—my husband and I love our date nights. We enjoy good drinks, good food and a chill ambiance. We both love Japanese cuisine and couldn’t be happier with EBESU ROBATA & SUSHI in Historic Downtown Plano. 1007 E. 15th St., Plano; 972/212-4564, ebesu-usa.com. Get active: EQUINOX PLANO, at The Shops at Willow Bend, is my favorite fitness club so far. Everyone is so nice and accommodating, and they have the best fitness classes. The eucalyptus steam room is a bonus. 6109 W. Park Blvd., Plano; 214/919-7409, equinox.com/clubs/texas/plano. Cool down: My kids spend summer days in our pool and cool off with shaved ice from SUGAR MOUNTAIN. Away from home, it’s LAKE RAY HUBBARD. SAPPHIRE BAY MARINA is great for boat rentals; they have a new fleet of pontoons, deck boats and wake surf boats. You can dock at THE HARBOR ROCKWALL, have some food and drinks, then hop back on the boat. Sugar Mountain, 909 W. Parker Road, Plano; 214/436-1294, sugarmountainsweets.com. hen STEPHANIE LYNCH and her family moved to Texas, they wanted to live in Fort Worth’s TCU-area Tanglewood neighborhood so much that they were willing to wait. “We rented for a year because there were no houses on the market,” Lynch shares. “We actually got the house we bought by putting letters in lots of mailboxes!” Lynch and husband Kevin share Brooks, 12, Ashton, 11, Case, 8, Banks, 6, and Berkley, 5. Lynch just launched a shaved ice business—they love snow cones—called RODEO SNO (@rodeosno). Family eats: YOGI’S DELI & GRILL has the best pancakes, French toast, omelets and bagels. And CHARLEY’S OLD FASHIONED HAMBURGERS. There’s a green space with games and things to climb on. Yogi’s Deli & Grill, 2710 S. Hulen St., Fort Worth; 817/921-4500, yogisdeliandgrill.com. Charley’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, 4616 Granbury Road, Fort Worth; 817/924-8611, facebook.com/charleysoldfashionedhamburgers. Best park: DREAM PARK, hands down! My kids love the zip line, roll slides, the big castle structure, and of course the swings. OVERTON PARK is the heart of Tanglewood. The kids can ride bikes on the trail, hit the playground, run around on the green space, play basketball or just explore. Dream Park, 2001 University Drive, Fort Worth; 817/392-5700, dreamparkfw. org. Overton Park, 3500 Overton Park Drive E., Fort Worth; 817/392-5700, fortworthtexas.gov. Favorite family outing: AIRFIELD FALLS. It is by the Naval Air Station. You walk down this unassuming path and then out opens this amazing water hole. The littles can splash around super-shallow water while big kids climb the falls, explore cool rocks, or float around. 200 Pumphrey Drive, Westworth Village; trinitytrailsfw.com/airfieldfalls. Other spots for cooling down: We frequent COLONIAL POOL and FORT WORTH ZOO'S SAFARI SPLASH. Colonial Country Club, 3735 Country Club Circle, Fort Worth; 817/9274200, colonialfw.com. Fort Worth Zoo Safari Splash, 1989 Colonial Parkway, Fort Worth; 817/759-7555, fortworthzoo.org/safari-splash. Self-care: I play tennis with friends on the OVERTON TENNIS COURTS. And having SORT THE FORT come over and organize your closet and your life is very recharging. Overton tennis courts, 3500 Overton Park O N Drive, Fort Worth; 817/795-4015, fortworthtennis.com. Sort the Fort; 817/896-9677, facebook.com/sortthefort. Get active: Half the family runs, and the TANGLEWOOD TRAILS are great. My husband does an F3 BOOTCAMP workout almost every morning at Overton Park or TCU. Tanglewood trails, fortworth.com/activefortworth/trails. F3 workout, multiple locations; 205/568-0282; f3dfw.com. Why Tanglewood is great for families: Tanglewood is very much a front-yard community, where families congregate together, take care of one another and choose to live here because of the community feel.

KELLER

F

or stay-at-home mom MARIBEL LOZANO, the charm of Keller lies its dual nature. With just over 45,000 residents, Keller is small enough to feel warm and inviting—but it’s also big enough to offer shopping, dining and recreation. The community keeps Lozano and her family (husband Reyes, 12-year-old daughter Cienna and 7-year-old son Elias) on the go all day long. Where they dine: DE VIVO BROS. EATERY, a family-run spot with Italian and American comfort food. They have the best breakfast and amazing desserts. 750 S. Main St., Suite 165, Keller; 817/4316890, devivobroseatery.com. Best park: JOHNSON ROAD PARK has a great playground, with several obstacles and slides for the kids as well as plenty of space for outdoor sports. 640 Johnson Road, Keller; 817/743-4050, cityofkeller.com/services/parks-recreation. Get out together: We enjoy KELLER FARMERS MARKET. It’s open on Saturdays, spring through fall, in Bear Creek Park. They offer a wide variety of foods and merchandise from great local vendors and farmers. 400 Bear Creek Parkway, Keller; kellerfarmersmarket.com. For staying active: BEAR CREEK PARK. There are plenty of bike and walking trails with great scenery, such as the garden and waterfall. Bear Creek Park also has two playgrounds. 400 Bear Creek Park Road, Keller; 817/743-4050, cityofkeller.com/services/parks-recreation. For cooling off: THE KELLER POINTE is one of our top summer options. There are indoor and outdoor pools, lazy rivers, water slides, a splash pad and a water playground. It’s also right across the street from RUSH BOWLS, which is our favorite spot for smoothies and acai bowls. The Keller Pointe, 405 Rufe Snow Drive, Keller; 817/743-4386. Rush Bowls, 242 Rufe Snow Drive, Keller; 682/593-8163, rushbowls.com/keller.

TEXAS TWO-STEP

WATER 2X A WEEK OR LESS It’s up to all of us to keep the water towers full. The best thing you can do is use your sprinklers twice a week or less. Even in the summer, watering only when needed will keep your lawn healthy and save thousands of gallons. And if it rains, remember to turn off your sprinklers. Find more water saving tips at WaterIsAwesome.com and let’s keep those towers full.

GRAPEVINE/COLLEYVILLE

M PA

ICHELLE CARTER has lived in cities across the United States, accompanying her television reporter husband Wayne as he has worked at different stations. Home is now Dallas-Fort Worth— Colleyville, specifically. The Carters were initially unsure where to settle in North Texas, but they are confident they chose the right place to raise Priscilla, 12, and Cailyn, 7. Best park: We love PARR PARK. We came across it while house-hunting and fell in love with the trees and hills. The new rock garden is a must see. 3010 Parr Lane, Grapevine; 817/410-3450, gograpevine.com. Favorite family outing: LAKE GRAPEVINE is an awesome place to soak up sun and see your neighbors. We go when we need to recharge. Also, we enjoy FOUNDERS’ PLAZA, the observation area on the north end of DFW Airport. It’s fun to sit and watch the planes come right over you. And COLLEYVILLE LIBRARY offers some great programs RK PA that are perfect for little ones. Lake Grapevine; lake-grapevine.com. R R DFW Airport Founders’ Plaza, 1700 N. Airfield Drive, Grapevine; dfwairport.com/explore/foundersplaza. Colleyville Public Library, 110 S. Main St., Colleyville; colleyvillelibrary.com. Go-to for going out: We frequent WINEWOOD on Main Street in Grapevine. The food, drinks and atmosphere are a great blend. Going to Main Street makes you feel young and reminds you of being in the big city. We’re also big fans of CHEF POINT. Winewood Grill, 1265 S. Main St., Grapevine; 817/421-0200, thewinewood.com. Chef Point Bar & Restaurant, 5220 S.H. 121, Colleyville; 817/482-5030, chefpointcafe.org. Self-care spot: Having DFW Airport near us makes it easy to hop a flight and steal away for a break. 2400 Aviation Drive; 972/526-0974, dfwairport.com. Where they get active: I run to recharge, and love the COTTON BELT TRAIL. The kids enjoy riding their bikes while I run, especially since we can stop and see alpacas and horses along the way. Multiple locations; traillink.com/trail/cotton-belt-trail. For cooling off: DOVE WATERPARK is amazing. My kids are five years apart, and they can both be entertained. We can spend all day on the slides, diving board, lily pad crossing and more. 1509 Hood Lane, Grapevine; 817/410-3088, gograpevine.com. How they give back: I run the local chapter of LITTLE HELPERS, a family volunteer group. Each month, we have a different service project that kids of all ages can participate in. We do things such as pick up trash at Lake Grapevine and make no-sew blankets for Project Linus. Search “Little Helpers of Dallas-Fort Worth” on facebook.com. Why Colleyville is great for families: Schools were a driving factor for us to narrow it down to the cities near this area. Our neighbors are warm and caring. It’s a little melting pot of people like us who relocated here and lifelong Texans. We’ve been here for nearly five years now, and Colleyville quickly became home. My kids love their schools and their friends. 32

allas-Fort Worth has been home sweet home to ANDREA NELSON’s family for eight generations now. Nelson (a stay-at-home mom, or “chaos coordinator,” as she prefers) and husband Craig—who works in sales—moved to Southlake seven years ago. They have four sons: Nolan, 12, Fletcher, 10, Knox, 7, and Miles, 5. Park they love: BOB JONES PARK. I can take my boys, and one can be playing while another fishes or explores around the pond. Horseback riders, walkers and runners frequent the trails there. 3901 N. White Chapel Blvd., Southlake; 817/7488019, experiencesouthlaketexas.com. Best family outing: My kids love URBAN AIR. They have dodgeball, race cars, bumper cars and trampolines. 2201 W. Southlake Blvd., Southlake; 817/2038686, urbanairtrampolinepark.com. Say ahhh: The best-kept secret is FOOT JOY near Hobby Lobby. LICIA BROOKS, owner of a LuLaRoe boutique, and husband Matt are parents of two: daughter Vera, 10, and son Simon, 7. Simon has autism, which can pose challenges (he is non-verbal and a runner). For the Brooks family, the pandemic had a silver lining; it created an opportunity to enjoy some outings without big crowds. Kid-friendly restaurant: SPRING CREEK BARBEQUE is our favorite restaurant. The kids love the food, and we especially love not having to wait for it to be ready. 1509 Airport Freeway, Bedford; 817/545-0184, springcreekbarbeque.com. Best park: CHISHOLM PARK in Hurst is our closest favorite park. The kids love the playground and seeing the ducks at the pond. 2200 Norwood Drive, Hurst; 817/788-7220, hursttx.gov. For some true self-care, I recommend Dawn Coop at SIMPLY SMOOTH SKIN THERAPY. HTeaO, 2128 Harwood Road, Bedford; 682/292-7555, hteao.com/bedford. s a former reporter and a contributor to DFWChild’s Podcast, it’s safe to say that BRITTANY MCELROY has her fingers on the pulse on what’s happening in Flower Mound and beyond. Her family just grew by one: McElroy and husband Colin welcomed newborn Asher, who joins Ethan, 5, and Evangeline, 2. DFWChild: What’s great about your town? BM: Flower Mound is a family-and kid-centric area. There are just so many different activities kids can do around here, plus it’s close to many other great suburbs. C: How does your family get active close to home? BM: We love bike rides. We have one of those trailers that can carry two kids, which my husband attaches to his bike. I hope my oldest will be comfortable riding his own bike by the time our youngest can ride in the buggy, so we can ride together again. C: Where is your top spot for cooling off in the summer? BM: HERITAGE SPRINGS SPLASH PAD, at Flower Mound’s Heritage Park, is amazing because it’s all covered. I don’t have to worry as much about the kids getting sunburned. C: What is your favorite local restaurant for dining as a family? BM: MARTY B’S in Bartonville. We love the food, and there’s an outdoor area for the kids to run around and play. They also have a fire pit and sell s’mores kits, which are a big hit with our kids. C: What park do visit over and over? BM: LITTLE ELM PARK has great trails to explore and a beach so the kids can get some sand and water time in without us having to travel. C: Where do you and Colin like to go out? NUPA PHILIP calls Little Elm home, along with husband David Burrows and their two kids, Avarie, 5, and Canaan, 3. The vice president and market director for JP Morgan shares her family’s favorite family restaurant, girls’ night spot and more. Favorite family restaurant: We love HAT CREEK BURGER CO. The food is good, and there’s even a play area where the kids can run wild while you’re enjoying your dinner and a beer. 2661 Little Elm Pkwy., Little Elm; 469/305-7600, hatcreekburgers.com. Best park: MCCORD PARK has something for everybody: trails, splash pad, lots of trees and open space. Along the Cottonwood Creek floodplain on FM 423, Little Elm; littleelm.org. Outing for the fam: A gem we just discovered is THE COVE in Little Elm. It’s an indoor water park with a retractable roof, water slides, a lazy river and a surf machine. Our kids are obsessed. 417 Lakefront Drive, Little Elm; 214/618-2047, thecoveatthelakefront.com. Outing for Mom: FORTUNATA WINERY. It’s great for girls’ nights, date nights and weekend getaways. They have live music, great wine and amazing flatbreads. The outdoor area is everything on cooler nights. 2297 FM 2931, Aubrey; 940/440-9463, fortunatawinery.com. For self-care: MAROC HAMAM is a spa that has the best steam room and a body scrub that will change your life. I have not found a better place to recharge. 2552 Stonebrook Pkwy., Suite 730, Frisco; 469/803-5833, marochamamspa.com. Get active: HOT BODY YOGA in Frisco. The instructors are awesome, and it’s one of my favorite ways to mentally reset and get a workout in at the same time! 12021 Dallas Pkwy., Suite 300, Frisco; hotbodyyogafrisco.com. Another spot to cool off: We love LITTLE ELM SPLASH PAD! 1001 Witt Road, Little Elm; 972/731-3296, littleelm.org.

IMBERLY THAGGARD, western director for iTeach US, lives in Denton’s Montecito area. She shares her favorite spots for her family (including husband Weston and kids James and Holland) in a community where “neighbors are friendly and bonds are strong.” Family dining: KEIICHI, a small sushi bar and Japanese steakhouse in Denton that seats only 20 people. The chef is both world-class and incredibly personable. 500 N. Elm St., Denton; 940/230-3410. Best green space: THE GREENBELT CORRIDOR is just beautiful; the trails and trees make it feel like you are eons away from the city. Multiple access points, cityofdenton.com. Favorite family outing: We enjoy the DENTON SQUARE. Twilight Tunes are back every Thursday night; you can sit under oak trees, listen to live music and enjoy one of the square eateries.
