NO EXCUSE FOR NEGATIVITY Drive the Right Message about Racing to our City Officials → By Chief Running Officer, Eric Lindberg

T

his might just be my boldest editor’s column in history, not due to the topic, but because I am going to do something crazy; throw Spareribs under the bus! I can’t wait to see my facebook page blow up! Beep…beep… beep… Let me back up first. Last month, Sharon and I were getting ready for another day at the office and routinely watching the Today Show. On this particular morning, the controversial topic of Maria Kang was being covered. For those of you who don’t know, Maria is a fitness enthusiast who last year posted a photo of herself in fitness attire with her three sons and the tagline, “What’s Your Excuse?” The photo went viral almost immediately and sparked a very NEGATIVE response. The Today Show was covering Maria’s latest post in March; another photo of herself but this one highlighting particular body parts with phrases or excuses next to each. Again, the photo went viral with a hugely NEGATIVE response. To give credit where credit is due, Sharon immediately pointed out how ridiculous it was that Maria’s message got twisted into something negative by the media and our society. I agree. Consider an entirely different picture, Mama June and Honey Boo Boo, for example, which is not one of family fitness or the best example of how to raise a child. Did you know that, (well, at least according to Google), Honey Boo Boo was paid $50,000 per episode and has a net worth of over $800,000? I found no dollar amounts in my google search of Maria’s net worth. But I

digress, my point is, I don’t think it is a negative for a mom to get or stay fit after having children. It is a great accomplishment and more power to Maria and all women who get inspired to be fit and challenge society to big goals. Back on the bus: Following the arctic blast that caused the cancelation of the majority of Cowtown Marathon events, Spareribs wrote an article about the negative backlash the event First posted photo went viral received which ended with the in 2013. warmest closing line I have read in a long time. He posted the article to facebook and, as usual, got several comments — even one from me in attempt to steer the ship to our Compliments form that we started years ago. And guess what, Spareribs criticized us, suggesting that our position implied that constructive criticism isn’t welcomed. In jest, I commented back “Complaining about Compliments.” We are transparently open to constructive ideas and thoughts about how to improve events and, Spareribs can attest to this, we encourage all runners to serve on a race committee or come to any of our staff/client meetings to discuss improvements. We have made this statement publicly multiple times and to date, with the exception of Kyle Hemmer, we have not had any takers. The message that I am trying to deliver here is a simple one. Let’s stop trying to find the negative in everything and focus on the positive. It is not the easiest thing to do and, like anything, takes practice, patience and pause. I am a Scorpio which makes this practice very difficult because when my stinger comes out, it’s pretty hard for me not to strike. My goal is to enjoy the April showers because they bring May flowers! Now an accomplished Ironman athlete, my husband can often times run faster than me. Back in the good ‘ol days, however, that wasn’t so. In fact, I almost left him as I chased down the finish line at a century bike ride. (I know this isn’t technically running, but I was training for a triathlon with a group I ran with and we were doing the race. So, just go with it.) Luckily, I realized finishing with him was more important than a faster time because as we crossed the finish line he gave me a prize greater than any race medal. The race photographer caught it all; Me standing out of the saddle with a complete and utter look of shock on my face and my husband, holding out a diamond ring, with a wide, “Gotcha!” grin on his. Spring is the perfect time to take that first step. The local event calendar is loaded with great 5Ks aimed at celebrating the outdoors like,

Thrill of the Grill 5K and Joe’s Run which are also family friendly, walker friendly and newbie runner friendly! The weather is decent (some days) with just enough wind and rain thrown in to keep things exciting. After all, a runner’s high is a great compliment to beers on the porch all season long! Running is simple, it’s complicated, beautiful and ugly. It’s anything you want it to be. For many of us non-runners or newbies, it is intimidating and a little frightening. What is going to happen after that first step? I’ll tell you what is going to happen. You take a second step, then a third, and a fourth. You find out you are stronger than you think you are. THE FUN BONE IS CONNECTED TO THE BEER BONE, CONT. HISTORY

While the holiday of Cinco De Mayo, (The 5th of May), commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862, Santo De Mayo instead embraces the Spanish word Saint. Saint Arnold was actually a French Bishop around 612, and legend has it that after his death, parishioners prayed for relief from their hot journey to honorably retrieve his remains, “By his powerful intercession the Blessed Arnold will bring us what we lack.” Immediately the small remnant of beer at the bottom of a pot multiplied in such amounts that the pilgrims’ thirst was quenched. This May, The Brewery harmoniously joins the French and Spanish forces with the Santo De Mayo 5K in celebration of their Santo brew. This beer has been about five years in the making and started as a project to rename Brown Ale. Back in 2011, when the owners of Saint Arnold Brewing Co. asked Texas artist, Carlos Hernandez; known for his Day of the Dead Rock Star paintings, to do his interpretation of the beloved and belated Saint Arnold, the dark beer label morphed into what is now the Santo label. “We loved the artwork, but it also made us decide to come up with a new beer to match the artwork. Santo is a black Kölsch, which

technically doesn’t exist as a style, but this is as close as we can come to describing it. Essentially it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor. Our goal was to create a dark yet refreshing beer that would pair perfectly with a plate of enchiladas.” Santo has won the Bronze Medal, World Beer Cup, American-Style Dark Lager in 2012 and just last year won the Silver Medal, World Beer Cup, American-Style Dark Lager.

RACE DAY FIESTA

Two and a half weeks after the social run, the official 5K race will start and finish at the Saint Arnold Brewing Company, (2000 Lyons Ave.) Set in the North end of Downtown Houston, the route will be USATF Certified, and will run along the Northside warehouse district, toward the Buffalo Bayou trail with views of downtown. Be the first to participate in the inaugural event, grab your free Santo De Mayo finisher’s pint glass to fill with not one, not two, but three Saint Arnold brews and rock your commemorative technical race tee shirt colorfully portraying the infamous Santo. He may embody the Day of the Dead, but on this day live music at the finisher’s fiesta will revive your dead legs and give you new life! EVERYONE APPRECIATES A GREAT DEAL! Stop and Smell the Roses (but don’t be weird about it) → By Cherilyn Wilson

he quote by American poet, E. E. Cummings, “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter,” is one that this month’s spotlighted Promotional Pace Leader, Rose Deal, lives by. “This quote reminds me to look for the good that is in the world and to live each day full of joy.” Rose explains, “It also encourages me to be goofy with hope of positively impacting the lives around me.” It is bloomin’ evident immediately upon meeting Rose that she’ll never be a thorn in your side. After digging deeper than the cheerful spunk, you learn that wasting a day is probably the only thing she doesn’t do. A budding chiropractor and blossoming business owner, Rose finds time to assist with tours at Four Corners Brewing Company, execute multiple promotions for the Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon & 5K, work the Unase al Reto training program for Bravest Race 5K, and pace our Rahr & Sons 5K social runs for hundreds of beer runners. All that fertilized with a little sunshine and running (a few zillion trails and ultras), some rock climbing, traveling and a full dozen other outdoor things makes her a top pick. With a bouquet of spring events sprouting up all over

DFW, make sure to take the time to stop and, well… give her a high-five for all the time she gives to make sure you’re up to speed. She’s not in it for herself, her dedicated time and efforts stem from her love for the sport. She’s there for you, the runner! “I love running, and I love to talk about running. Working for OYL! gives me the opportunity to do both and it helps me get a little break from school work.” Rose is currently working on attaining her Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Parker University. Deal got her foot out the door with OYL! back at the start of last year because she took a little of her time to serve on the other side of the running industry—she planted herself at our booth at the Hot Chocolate Expo and her positive attitude has complimented our promotional business ever since. She deals out constructive feedback and suggestions and we admire her passion. It didn’t take long for her to grow on us! Make arrangements to meet her, (before she is up, up and away to OKC promoting at the Marathon Expo!) at her next gig Rahr & Sons 5K “Hoppy Easter” social run. GADGETS, GEAR AND UNSOLICITED ADVICE

→ APRIL SHOWERS BRING SALES AND NEW GEAR

→ By Sharon Lindberg

RUNNING WITH THE WEATHER!

9 AM: The March day started at 40 degrees, no wind, sunny. My training called for a long run; the goal to hammer out an hour and a half run. Done deal! I donned a pair of cropped running tights, a long sleeve dry fit shirt, and my gloves. The perfect outfit for a cooler, drizzly morning but not too much so as to overheat and then have to take off clothes. 2 PM: I headed out with the pup on a 3 mile walk; it’s warm, sunny and 70 degrees. Such a change Ahhh! Happy Hour! from the morning. Hmmm… what to wear. Shorts, long sleeve shirt; it’s way too warm for anything more. 5 PM COCKTAILS: Time to have more fun on that fantastic Saturday; Happy hour, and I’m out to meet some friends for some suds on a patio with the sun setting and the temp dropping down with the sun. A cold front and a cool breeze blows in. Since I’m walking to the patio and have the pup in tow; I dress with long dry fit pants, a long sleeve, light jacket and bring my gloves and warm hat for when the sun sets. Funny how this outfit mirrors what I’d wear on a run in colder weather too!

All in all a fantastic day but the hardest question was ‘what do I wear?” Cold in the morning, warm in the midday sun and cooler at sunset. Being a runner for many years and learning from trial and error, it’s getting easier to choose what to gear up with before I head out. But when you live in Texas; Mother Nature can send all four seasons in the same day! There are times in the middle of a long run that I’ve second guessed my running gear choices, both good and bad. If you’re a new runner, it can be hard (and expensive!) when deciding what gear to buy so it’s important that your selections be made carefully and be prepared for anything!

WATER, WIND AND SALE AWAY!

It’s always good to start with key pieces that you can mix. Layering in cold weather is key, having transitional pieces is a must and with the sweaty weather already peeking in, NOW is the time to run to the huge sale racks for this essential winter gear! Investing in a couple of lightweight, water/wind proof (and reflective) jackets is important because, even during daytime hours, these April showers make you less visible to drivers. And mornings can

GUYS! NIKE ELEMENT SHIELD MAX WATERPROOF RUNNING JACKET Bulky jackets are not good, I recommend a slim jacket that delivers a lot of features for the money. This sleek jacket from Nike is water/windresistant, protects you from the elements but delivers breathable Dri Fit fabric. You’ll look good and it’ll keep you warm. SHOP

LADIES! NIKE SHIELD LIGHT WOMEN’S RUNNING JACKET This ladies light weight choice provides coverage from wind and rain but with enhanced breathability for lightweight performance that outlasts the cold weather and comes in four fun colors so you can coordinate with your running shoes! SHOP

FOR ALL! NEW BALANCE HI-VIZ BEACON

This softshell Hi-Viz will brighten up any cloudy day with its neon hues and 360-degree strips of reflective tape — with one surprising twist: a matrix of bright, glow-in-the-dark spots and stripes that are clearly visible through wet windshields and on unlit roads. In no light, you’ll literally glow. Then, because the sun’ll come out tomorrow, store the Beacon jacket in a sunny place to recharge! Did you know that you lose about 10-13% of heat from your head? It’s no running secret that in extreme cold weather wearing a beanie helps keep you warm. Did you know that at this time of year, you can probably save about 5075% off cold weather running gear? In contrast, that ought to help you keep a cool head about spending after filing those taxes!

CRAFT BRILLIANT BEANIE

It’s Brilliant! I think this is the best hat for cold, dark conditions; just $24.99, this soft, warm and highly visible hat offers a brushed fabric interior, is thermal and is not too heavy but packs a big punch on keeping your head & ears toasty warm! And with the bright color, it’s highly visible for early dark mornings or night time running too. Plus Craft is better known for making Nordic ski clothes so you know they’ve got you covered. still be cool (especially if you run earl before the sun comes up), so you may still need a great pair of running gloves and a good hat/visor to keep your warm, your head dry, and rain out of your eyes on those runs in inclement weather. Let’s breakdown some of my top choices for running in unpredictable weather.

GADGETS, GEAR AND UNSOLICITED ADVICE

A BRIMMED HAT

Don’t sweat which one to get, just put a lid on it and keep the rain off your face and out of your eyes. Brooks makes a nice variety with full-mesh, partial mesh or no-mesh caps and often incorporates reflective strips in their design. This brand never fails to fit well and provide a good brim without footing a big bill. Never underestimate a Texas thunderstorm and never underestimate the power of warm hands and feet, regardless of what the temps were 10 minutes ago!

WOOL SOCKS

When you think “Wool Socks”, you think warmth in cold weather, right? The advantages of wool stretches beyond the winter months and actually have a toe in springtime running too. Though they are Darn Tough, these Darn Tough Vermont Merino Wool No Show socks are thin enough to fit in your sneaks. The 71% Merino Wool lining means maximum breathability, moisture control and insulation whether it’s hot or slushy. For $15 a pair, your piggies will keep driest and stave off blisters when hoofin’ it in these! SHOP

ULTIMATE TOUCH-TEK GLOVE BY SAUCONY

Also just $15 (on sale now!) allows you to multitask like no other. These gloves not only keep your digits warm, but they allow you to use your touchscreen device too. I’ll never lay my hands on any glove but these! SHOP

SANDWICH BAGGIES

It’s the simplest, most practical item that really packs a lunch! No need for anything fancy or pricey when your run is sandwiched between packing school lunches, getting to work on time and squeezing in your training run or race even when Mother Nature and Reality try to rain on your parade. Your phone and ipod will stay dry on a wet run and touch screens work through a regular sandwich (Ziploc) baggie. Don’t get the bread from your wallet soggy- It’s all you need. So gear up right and don’t miss a day of running because of the cold or showers in the forecast! There’s a running quote that says “there is no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothing!”

Gear up for spring by getting your brand outside and taking thousands of participants by storm! Dial 214-339-7867 through your Ziploc now!

A PATH LESS TRAVELED – TRINITY STRAND TRAIL → By Brandon Gillingham

W

e never really know what will happen to the scratches we make in this thin dust. I think back about some of the trails I have covered over the years. I have stories like nearly being run over by a horse and being forced up a tree by a dog chase. But there are more somber stories which no runner really talks of that are favorites because of the freedom a trail gives us, not to mention a new one. Just 4 months shy of 2 years in the Dallas area and I continue to find new trails. My latest discovery was thanks to our last Pub Run Series social run at the new Rodeo Goat. There’s a paved bike path nearby the intersection, called the Trinity Strand Trail. The entire out-and-back loop may be roughly 5 miles. Though it’s used by other runners, walkers and bikers, I enjoyed finding it much less crowded than other trails in the city. If I was looking for a day to do some mile repeats, or a fartlek run and didn’t want run out at the lake, or battle stopping at intersections, I would highly recommend the TST for this kind of workout. It hasn’t happened yet, but this will be my “scratch” to this thin trail. Hopefully this inspires ya to get out and check this cool trail out. If you happen to be hitting it up for a speed session, let me know. I could be game to join ya! Best of luck with your training and upcoming races! Happy trails!

Having a Ball with the Mavs and Panini America → By Paul Hutzler

I

t’s not every day that your childhood fascination of collecting basketball cards and watching NBA basketball games becomes part of your grown-up way to make a living. Recently, the On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS team partnered up with Panini America to provide the game day execution of its latest promotion at Dallas Mavericks Basketball games. It’s only fitting that I, the biggest basketball fan in our office, drew the lead on this assignment. Panini tasked On Your Left! to secure a promotional team of models for each of the games and establish a presence for Panini both inside and outside the American Airlines Center. The six games that Panini selected were some of the biggest games of the season for the Dallas Mavericks as all of the opponents had been jockeying for playoff position. The slate included the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Memphis Grizzlies. At each remaining game, you will see Panini scattered throughout the arena, as ball boys will be

handing out Mavs packs to fans arriving through the doors. Each Mavs pack will feature Dirk to satisfy the heart of every beloved Mavs fan for life. Fans who collected each pack from each game will have a complete custom set. Both inside and outside the arena, sticker books, stickers and trading cards are handed wherever you see a Panini blowup or popup of larger-than-life player cards for photo opportunities. It’s been a blast thus far to see kids’ and even adults’ faces light up upon receipt of these items. Panini trading cards and stickers can be found at most major retailers – AND ALWAYS on the Panini website iCollectPanini.com. For those really interested in Panini, they have an exclusive deal with the Dallas Mavericks (and many other key athletes) in which they receive game-used jerseys in order to create unique and authentic memorabilia. These items are available on PaniniAuthentic.com.

DOC IN THE BOX

DON’T BE A HEEL Slow Down and Heal → By Holly Johnson, M.D.

T

he Doc in the Box is getting out of the box and is requesting you be the co-author! Yes, you! Get off your duff, write in some mind-boggling health questions you’ve been meaning to ask and we will answer your questions right here in each issue of On Your Left! The longer I run, the worse my ¹ heel hurts. What is the problem? What is the most effective way to combat plantar fasciitis (except to quit running!)?

Q

ANSWER ¹ I feel sorry for the 10% of running soles/souls (I couldn’t help myself!) who suffer from plantar fasciitis. It hurts! The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue that attaches at the bottom of the heel and stretches and fans out to the base of our toes at the ball of our foot. Pain is usually worst first thing in the morning and when you push off on your toes during your run. Other causes of heel pain may include arthritis, heel spurs, a stress fracture, or tarsal tunnel syndrome. Unfortunately, to treat plantar fasciitis, you have

to slow down until it feels better. If it is mild pain, try decreasing your stride length and increasing your cadence and get off the hard pavement! Even better, this is an opportunity for you to do some cross training and stop running for a while. Try low impact cycling and swimming. Do not try to run through the pain! Eighty-five percent of people with plantar fasciitis will recover with a few months of rest, ice, NSAIDs, stretches, new shoes, night splints, physical therapy and massage, and/or silicone arch supports. Ultrasound and extracorporeal shock wave therapy are also showing some promising results in some new smaller studies. Last resort is always surgery. Never get a steroid shot in your heel as this may damage the protective heel fat pad! A few home stretches to try: sit with one leg crossed over the opposite knee. Grab your toes with the same hand and pull back your toes. Hold the stretch for ten seconds while massaging the plantar fascia with the other hand. Repeat this stretch 30 times a day. They say that doctors make the worst patients. In Pick It and Flick It, Holly Johnson, M.D. affirms that it doesn’t have to be that way as she shares the emotional, spiritual, and physical reality of how she conquered a potentially devastating diagnosis and kept away the demons of hopelessness, uncertainty, and fear that commonly paralyze any person who is faced with a life-altering event. In this true story of doctor-turned-patient, she squashes her inner enemies with a hit of humor, a punch of grace, and a few temporary tattoos. Written just for you, Dr. Johnson shares her own prescription for healing that she wrote when her body staged a revolution so she could undergo an evolution.

enson Chesang, winner of the Dallas Dash Down Greenville and fourth place overall finisher at the Dallas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon tells us some of his secrets to success. You may have seen him around the Dallas trails or you may not have because he is pretty swift on the run. There are many ways a person can train for a race. If you want to push your body to its best limits you have to train hard. Benson does just this. He also is a perfectionist on recovery; a component in training a lot of runners can misinterpret some times. This Kansas track and XC alum seems to have this recovery thing down pat, so check out how he feels and recovers!

You won the Dallas St. Patrick’s Day Dash Down Greenville, as well recently placed fourth overall in the Dallas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. Congratulations! How important is it, for your training, to

race multiple times a season before “the big race” you’re trying to peak at? BENSON ¹ Each and every race is important to me as it helps me get fitter.

When did you first start running?

BENSON ¹ Serious structured running for me began when I graduated from High school.

Do you remember your first race? What time did you run?

BENSON ¹ Yes! My First race was an indoor 3K in Champagne, Illinois. I ran 8.12!

What is the hardest component (for you) in training for a half marathon and/or full marathon that took you a while to get use to? How about an ultra?

BENSON ¹ I am not crazy yet to train for ultra! But to answer your question, I am yet to follow any kind of training component. I go as I feel .

What’s the most important component in training for any race distance? BENSON ¹ I am very old school when it comes to

“If you don’t enjoy running you might as well quit doing it.”

What is that one season or year you always seem to refer back to as “the perfect season”? Or the season where you had some setbacks, though still performed really well under the circumstances (like injury or personal).

BENSON ¹ Every season to me is perfect. Provided I can still get out and go for a run. I consider it a score. Setbacks? I quit running for almost 3 years and that was a good experience for me.

What do you reward yourself with after a good workout or race? BENSON ¹ I reward myself with a day off or a slow recovery run.

Do you have a favorite running quote?

BENSON ¹ This is my quote I came up with, “If you don’t enjoy running you might as well quit doing it”.
