f you keep up with us, even just a little bit, then you know we produce incredible events for our amazing clients all over this great country. And if you know me, even just a little bit, then you know I am a runner. When I travel, I love to run — especially in cities where I have never been. A run allows me to really see the city and helps a lot with jet lag. Check out some of our past issues and our Jaunt Junkie column. The OYL! staff and I write about some great running routes/trails in the places we visit. Traveling as a runner, however, is getting more difficult. Is it unusual for a guy to pack so many pairs of shoes? One pair for work, one for casual and of course, the runners. On my most recent trip, a large amount of rain was in the forecast so I had my rain boots with me too! That’s four pairs of size 11’s to cram into a carry-on. Add San Francisco & Ultra Marathon Man to that your clothes, zip ties, and (Jaunt Junkie May 2014)

UPCOMING EVENTS
p next: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and another 365 day “reset” button hit at 12:00 AM, January 1st, 2016. The race is on. Go! As planning for these holidays signals the end of old and ringing in of new, we see tradition meet NEWtrition. One of the predicted trends of 2015 was just picking up speed in the final stretch and is predicted to only gain momentum next year. Awesome, because we love fast stuff, am I right? We are a busy society without time to waste! The faster we can get it, the better. Grab the PR, take the fast lane, the quicker line, the speedier service, the microwave, 3-minute abs, pay at the pump, pay with your phone, order ahead, fiber connections, 23 Mbits/s downloads, and abbreviations like “etc.” because we don’t have time to go on and on with such lists now do we? We want results fast. We want information faster. We can’t be inconvenienced. We’ve got stuff to do! And to eat.

Amazon also offers an online grocery store while Tom Thumb, Albertson’s and WalMart are expanding their services in some cities as the busy but tech savvy shoppers increase. But even though we want to save time and do things more quickly, consumers are becoming more health conscious and are concerned about processed and fast foods. They not only want the convenience of buying their groceries online, they are also demanding more access to what it is they are buying. “Mobile devices make it possible to research a product from anywhere and consumers take advantage of this unprecedented access to information to make better decisions about the foods they eat. The hyperconnected grocery shopper scanning barcodes with her phone at the store looking up nutritional information, looking up brand/product information or watching product videos makes up the majority (68%), according to the 2015 NinthDecimal Mobile Audience Insight Report. A Great Looking 6-pack Rahr & Sons knows to get it from Pollock → By Cherilyn Wilson
Y
ear after year, the Rahr Oktoberfest 5K offers participants the perfect package, complete with an exclusive beer belly division; the most popular race shirts, commemorative finisher’s pint, awesome medals, fast course, and the most festive post-race party this side of Munich. So when we think of perfect packaging, we recognize presenting sponsor, Pollock, as a cut above. Pollock helped make the great 5K race happen, but what does a packaging supply company have to do with your Buffalo Butt? As with forming great abs, packing your beautiful Rahr brews doesn’t just happen overnight, but with the help of Pollock’s problem solvers, it practically does. They worked with the brewery to customize the best
system and designed equipment which erects and expands the cardboard carrier, the insertion of the 6 bottled and capped beers, or in the case of the cases, the additional automated steps of closing and sealing the custom boxes. The only manpower left needed to get them within your reach is to muscle the pretty packages onto the truck. Pollock provides everything your business needs to get your products where they are going. With their automated solutions, along with custom packaging design and box printing, Rahr can ship more efficiently, display better, and save money. Susan Hatfield of Pollock brought her whole family out to participate in the race in support of the company’s great sponsorship, of Rahr & Sons Brewery, and of living an active lifestyle. She explains how Pollock is very flexible because they just love providing their customers with solutions and reminds us that Pollock offers tailored one-on-one consulting, supplies for every corner of the workplace and office supplies, from facilities cleaning and management to packaging resources, equipment and custom corrugated packaging/supplies. Pollock’s slogan, “We make solved happen,” means they source, supply and solve the biggest challenges for the people managing the places, maintaining the spaces and shipping the things that make business work. They’ll roll up their sleeves and work out the kinks like a gym rat would workout the abdominals.

HELLO, WINTER!
Will we be running in the rain? → By Sharon Lindberg
I
t’s that time of year; fall, and soon, winter. In between the holi-daze (yes, DAZE) of overstuffing ourselves on Thanksgiving and ringing in the new year, we’ll be logging miles for goal races, PR’s, marathons, halfs and for simple fitness too. Warm sunny days are long gone. It is time for the much anticipated cooler ‘running weather’ but if you’re like me, running in the rain is not a favorite. Mother Nature is under no one’s control, so when you are facing a run in the rain, you may as well get prepped so you can enjoy it. Otherwise, stay home with a warm fire and a cup of hot coffee or tea; stay off facebook (nobody wants to hear your complaints about how rainy it is, how humid it is, or how cold because they probably also heard about how hot it was all summer long too. We know! We know!). The weather is not always perfect. A runner goes out into the elements and gets used to it. Embrace it. Last month, I took a much needed vacation to Cabo San Lucas and though it rained one day, I was prepared and properly dressed for it and enjoyed a refreshing (and cooler than normal) run in paradise. So get geared up and get out there!
TOP 3 GEAR FOR RUNNIN’ IN THE RAIN
A hat is a must! There is nothing better than having your head, face and eyes covered from the rain. Look for a lighter weight cap, but one that will fit you well. Traditional running hats work but why not have some fun with a different style like a trucker cap? Check out this one by the North Face.

SKIP TO MY LOU LAST MONTH Skip the Flu This Month → By Holly Johnson, M.D.
Q
What is the flu?
ANSWER ¹ Influenza, or the flu, is a respiratory illness caused by a virus that hits you hard and fast, kinda like by an NFL linebacker! Hit from the blindside; one hour you are feeling pretty good, and within a few hours, Bam!, the fever (usually over 101), body aches, cough and/or sore throat kick in. Some will have headache, red eyes, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. (Note: nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea alone is not the flu!) ¹
Q
¹
How is the flu different from a common cold or a sinus infection?
ANSWER ¹ You read what the flu can do to you…flatline you in bed for a week! The common cold, however, is caused by one of a hundred other viruses. It comes on gradually, and sure, you feel tired, but not like the linebacker hit. If you get a fever, it is usually low grade. A cold lasts anywhere from 7-10 days and is self-limited, i.e. it goes away on its own. A viral upper respiratory infection (URI) will give you a scratchy throat, clear nasal congestion, stuffy ears, and a little cough. If you have URI symptoms that get worse or are not any better after a week, it may be time to check in with
your doc to make sure it isn’t a sinus infection. Sinus infections give you pressure in your sinuses, a thick yellow or green discharge, and sometimes dental or eye pressure.
Q
¹
What is bronchitis?
ANSWER ¹ Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes that can cause a wet or dry cough. Most of the time, bronchitis is also caused by a virus and it will go away on its own in one to three weeks. If you have a cough that lasts more than a couple of weeks, you develop a fever over 101, you cough up blood, or you are short of breath or wheezing, check in with your favorite doc or urgent care clinic.
Q
¹
Can any of this be prevented?
ANSWER ¹ The best form of prevention is good old-fashioned hand washing. Wash your hands with soap and water or hand gels/ foams throughout the day. Especially wash after you shake hands with someone and right when you get home from being out anywhere. I mean it! When you walk in your house, hang your keys, set the groceries on the counter, get to thy sink and wash your hands! Also, like mom says, “Wash your hands before dinner!” What she → CONTINUED

They say that doctors make the worst patients. In Pick It and Flick It, Holly Johnson, M.D. affirms that it doesn’t have to be that way as she shares the emotional, spiritual, and physical reality of how she conquered a potentially devastating diagnosis and kept away the demons of hopelessness, uncertainty, and fear that commonly paralyze any person who is faced with a life-altering event. In this true story of doctor-turned-patient, she squashes her inner enemies with a hit of humor, a punch of grace, and a few temporary tattoos. Written just for you, Dr. Johnson shares her own prescription for healing that she wrote when her body staged a revolution so she could undergo an evolution.

DOC IN THE BOX is saying is, “Keep your hands away from your face!” until you wash them which is another way to prevent germ spreading. Watch yourself and be conscious of how many times a day you touch your face… whenever you wipe your nose, touch your eye, lean on your open palm, or cover your yawn with your mouth, you are creating the potential for bugs to jump into your respiratory system and plant and bloom.
Q
Is there a vaccine for any of this?
ANSWER ¹ There is a vaccine for influenza and everyone over the age of six months should get one every year. Flu season is here from October until May and peaks December through February. If you haven’t received your flu shot this season, it is not too late! If you have a kiddo between the ages of six months and eight years and (s)he hasn’t ever had a flu shot, (s)he might need two doses at least four weeks apart. There are several ways to get the flu vaccination but whatever way you can get it, get it! It takes two weeks for the vaccine to be effective, you need to get a new flu shot every year, and you cannot get the flu from the vaccination! ¹
Q
¹
Can’t the flu be treated with medications? What about a URI or bronchitis?
ANSWER ¹ Yes, the flu can be treated with antiflu medications but ideally must be started within the first 48 hours of your symptoms. So, get a move on to your doc if you think you might have the flu. And please, don’t be offended if we ask you to wear a mask! We are only protecting you from picking up more serious complications of the flu, and protecting our other patients and ourselves when we ask you to do so. Even though the flu may go away on its own, we especially need to treat those at high risk of serious complications such as the young (less than two years old), the old (over 65), pregnant mommies, those with certain medical conditions (not limited to asthma, COPD, diabetes), and those who are really sick. If you have the flu, rest, hydrate, and stay home from school or work! You are contagious two days before your symptoms even hit you from the blindside and until you are fever free for at least 24 hours without a fever reducer. A URI and bronchitis should be treated with fluids, rest, time, and over the counter medications as needed. The anti-flu medications will not help the common cold and neither will antibiotics. Antibiotics are reserved for people with bacterial infections such as strep throat, ear infections, sinus infections, pneumonia, and sometimes bronchitis if it is not going away on its own. Please Note: The info in this article is not a substitute for medical advice from your own physician. Dr. Johnson and OYL! are not responsible for getting you to the free flu vaccine events in your area, for telling you if you have the flu or a cold, or for writing any work or school excuses for you. Wash your hands, get vaccinated, be grateful for your health and your many blessings, and Happy Thanksgiving to ya’ll! Gobble, gobble!
