Letter from the Editor Chief Running Officer, Eric Lindberg

SALUTE FROM THE EDITOR Putting One Foot In Front of the Other for The Long Run

Happy 4th of July! Wait…what? It’s July already? How time flies! During a recent staff meeting, our team huddled to review the weekend of June 16-17, our busiest weekend of the year by far. In two days, DFWRUNS operated five events across the country from Los Angeles to Washington DC. In addition, we were marketing, with feet on the street, at five other events from the Poconos to Central Illinois. Ten events in two days — yeah, we were pretty busy! Just seven months prior, we thought managing four events on the same weekend qualified as busy work. As I said, time flies! At this rate, we can’t wait for you to see what we will accomplish in September! Learning the potential of DFWRUNS and challenging our staff to grow is very important to us. But on a broader level, these opportunities have helped us thrive as a small business, which in turn helps other small businesses. In the long run, this helps our economy grow. And you, more than anyone, have played a vital role in this by simply putting one foot in front of the other. Just like training for a marathon, it is the small steps you take every day that fuel the larger gains over time. It is a philosophy we believe in and continue to pursue here at DFWRUNS. Our business is built organically. This means we don’t have investors, nor have

“We have simply poured our own heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into building DFWRUNS (this business).”

DFWRUNS is a proud member of USA Track & Field! Support Team USA as we gofor the gold this summer! And if your brand, event or wellness program is looking for a gold medal idea we can help!

“On Your Left!”?

we have taken out a loan. We have simply poured our own heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into building this business. When people ask me what I am the most proud of at DFWRUNS, my answer is always this: we do the right things for our customers. From time to time, this means admitting we made a mistake. Hey, we are only human. Like anyone else, we are much happier when we experience success, but we are also thankful that we have the freedom and independence to make mistakes and learn from them. As I look at the calendar this month I see a ton of ways to celebrate and honor that freedom. You see, we as Americans we have the unique opportunity of celebrating our independence; from cheering on Team USA in the Olympics this summer to choosing the next President of this great country. In that spirit, for the month of July we are going to change the colors of the D-F-W in our name to Red, White and Blue. It’s our way of honoring those men and women who have fought in defense of our freedom, and those who continue that fight today. Working in the active lifestyle industry, we interact a lot with local governments, from city event staff to police and fire departments. As we celebrate Independence Day, we say to all of them, “Thank You”. We at DFWRUNS are grateful for all you do, especially the unseen things that keep us all safe! Lastly, we ask that you take a moment and reflect on how those sacrifices, large and small, affect your daily stride. ON YOUR LEFT! — Eric Lindberg

UPCOMING EVENTS

s we have mentioned many times, last month our staff flew to multiple cities across America for The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge and Dash For Dad race series. All Angels & Bosleys have returned to DFW, each with independent reports of GREAT success. In Los Angeles, runners celebrated Father’s Day with their families at the beautiful beach setting of South Bay. The classic tradition of giving dad a necktie for Father’s Day was carried on as we gave them out prior to the start gun. “I loved seeing all of the families, dads and their kids walking and running with their neckties on and having a great time.” DFWRUNS Owner and Director of Happy Running, Sharon Lindberg said. “It was just so cool that they honored Father’s Day doing something fun and healthy together.” After the finish, it seemed not one person left for their cars. A beautifully large crowd gathered to continue the celebration at the award ceremony at which we drew bib numbers at random to win various prizes. “The most epic moment was when we gave our iPad3 to a randomly selected runner.” Sharon explains, “It was a 5 year old boy who was part of “Team Velarde” which was one of our largest fundraising teams. The crowd all clapped and cheered as the little boys mom lead him to the stage to claim his iPad.” Dash For Dad, Nashville presented a beautiful course from Country Music Hall of Fame and along all of Music Row. the banjo strings of victory and embraced the country twang of triumph when this race sold out at 500 more than double last year’s numbers! We enjoyed a flawless race in Atlanta while working alongside Gordon Grant — recognizing the many big contributors and prostate cancer survivors. DFWRUNS is looking ahead to the great opportunities and new partnerships there in 2013. Like an old sweet song, keep Georgia on your mind. The patriotic people in D.C. were so in love with our race that we even got to witness a proposal at the finish line. This guy’s mission was to finish one awesome course and then embark on another. DFWRUNS mission is to develop quality races through extensive branding, marketing and promotions, as well as the precise execution of road racing according to the wants and needs of our clients. “Nationwide, a man dies from prostate cancer every 18 minutes.” We’re proud to be working with ZERO and play a part in ending prostate cancer by providing education, free screenings, early detection and hope.

Sweet Run! Tips for Running with Diabetes

G

od bless America, God bless the running community, and God bless the funny people in our lives! Before you start reading about more of your numbers, this time about your blood sugars, let me tell you about my funny five year old patient with pink eye I saw this month. I knocked on the door to his room, walked in, and saw cutiepatootie “Jose” who had a cool faux-hawk, front and top of his hair sticking straight to the sky. I exclaimed, “Jose, you have such cool hair! How did you get it to stick up like that?!” I expected him to say gel, mousse, or even Gorilla Snot, but no; with utter glee in his big smile he answered honestly, “Spanish people!” (Where do kids come up with this stuff?) I don’t know how Hispanic Americans cut hair to make it stick up, but I do know that they are, along with African Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians, at an increased risk for diabetes. If you are overweight or have impaired glucose tolerance or a history of gestational diabetes, you are also at an increased risk. Twentyfour million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated seven million have it and don’t know it. With the ever-blossoming fast and processed food industry, lack of getting outside to play, and parents quieting their kiddos with a sugary snack instead of a healthy alternative, there is a diabetes epidemic.

The Diabetes Prevention Program found that a healthy diet and exercise can decrease the chances of someone with IGT becoming a diabetic! That is motivation enough to lace up.

Please Note: The info in this article is not a substitute for medical advice from your own PCP; you should always discuss exercise plans with your own doc; Dr. Johnson and DFWRUNS are not liable for any blood sugar crashes, ketoacidosis emergencies (you type 1s out there know what I’m saying), or bad haircuts.

The Joslin Diabetes Center has some sweet tips for runners: 1

Get clearance from your doc.

2 Gradually go from walking to running. 3 Wear the right footwear. 4 Find a partner or role model and keep a goal in mind. 5 Snack or eat one to one and a half hours before you run. 6 Have a diabetes management plan! Check your blood glucose before and after activity (and during if needed). Carry a quick source of glucose with you in case your sugar runs low. 7

Hydrate!

8 Keep a training log of exercise and your blood sugars. 9 Get into a regular routine. This helps keep your blood glucose on target. 10 Avoid hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and alcohol after your run. These can make your glucose crash!

Why do you NOT want to have diabetes? High blood sugars literally coat your insides and cause organ damage. Having diabetes increases your chance of having heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, painful numbness in your hands and feet, and premature death. So, how do you know if you have it or are at an increased risk? Diabetes is defined as a fasting (nothing to eat for at least eight hours) blood glucose greater than 126 on two different days, a random blood glucose greater than 200 on two different days, or a hemoglobin A1c (a measurement of your average daily blood glucose over a three month period) greater than 6.5% on two different days. A normal fasting blood glucose is 70-100 and a normal HgA1c is 4-5.6%. If someone has a fasting glucose of 101-125 or a HgA1c of 5.7-6.4% they have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). It is a well known fact that exercise and weight loss can help to lower and control blood sugar in people with diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program found that a healthy diet and exercise can even decrease the chances of someone with IGT becoming a diabetic! That is motivation enough to lace up. If you are on oral meds, your blood sugar should be at least 90 before you exercise. If you are on insulin or on a combo of insulin and oral meds, your blood sugar should be 110-140 before running. If you are a type 2 diabetic (95% of you diabetic runners out there), with or without insulin, and your sugar is 400 or above, do not exercise! Call your doc and get advice. If you are a type 1 diabetic and your sugar is above 250, check your urine for ketones. If you have ketones, no exercise for you that day! Call and check in with your doc! If you have no ketones, it is okay to exercise with caution. Check your blood sugar within 10-15 minutes of working out and hydrate! If your sugar is coming down, you may continue your activity, but if it is not, or if it increases, sorry, it is best to stop for the day. All Americans, diabetic or not, you are all sweet! Get out there and find a red-white-and blue road race to celebrate the holiday. And for your health, get out there and know your numbers!

FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE

Story of a Runaway

A

s a teenager, I ran along a cold, foggy beach in southern Maine to escape my small-town parents and their seemingly ridiculous rules. I’d flee the pressure and stupidity of school and mean boys. I ran away. Two miles away. I am reminded of that phase of life as the calendar unfurls, waving its new page boldly titled, JULY. As we celebrate a day in history when our country fought for liberty and justice for all, I remember how it felt to run without rules. Back then, all this 16 year old kid wanted was to be 18 and all an 18 year old wanna-be wanted to be independent. These memories of running free without restrictions rise up at this time of year like a flag on pole. Out there in that ocean air, I was flying high. I had the whole horizon to myself. I was self-governed. Isn’t it this yearning for freedom what lures so many of us grown-ups out into the streets and onto the trails before the kids get up or after our work day is done? “It’s my way out there.” No pressure, no limits.

SO WHY RACE? (and jeopardize your Freedom?)

Why put a time on it. Why lay restrictions on the asphalt and follow a course someone else marked out? For one, I race because it teaches you how to be strong like a soldier in battle. Life is full of battles and rarely do you want go in fighting without preparation or unaware of your capabilities. There will be many moments in a race where you’ll pull out strengths you didn’t even know you had. Mind games will plague your suffering head, but you won’t give up. Then, the next time something in life challenges, you won’t be defeated.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE

DFWRUNS offers so many races, you have the freedom to choose which reasons you want to run for. Our color-

fully woven array of clients present a little of everything for everyone. Mud runs, for example, allow you to get out with a group of friends and play like a kid. Though physically challenging, our events like The Original Mud Run support the local Young Marines, and our recent Gladiator Rock’N Run, benefitted TACA (Talk About Curing Autism), providing families the resources needed to rise up to their every day challenges. Running for a cause you believe in makes staying active even more rewarding. Trinity Habitat for Humanity has been the beneficiary of one of our favorite clients. In our fourth year of presenting the Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest 5K, we are on tap to offer the most fun and festive experience one can have running in lederhosen. The course includes a start and finish at the famous brewery and now its very own parade. So, if you embrace racing for a great cause, then our biggest client, The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge is open for registrants at www.greatprostatecancerchallenge.com. Be ready to race America’s Premier Men’s Health Event Series in Arlington on September 22, 2012. You’ll be helping to provide free screenings and awareness to some great guys. DFWRUNS is also fired up about the race that allows you to soar to new heights Sunday, September 23rd. The Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon & 5K will get your whole family together for fun festivities following a little fitness. Maybe you can beat your mom or your brother out there, but you just can’t beat this venue for a race on the gorgeous trails by Oak Point Park in Plano. Be sure to register by the end of this month because the colorful balloons aren’t the only thing that will go up- prices increase at midnight 7/31/2012. I, for one, still look forward to visiting my pesky parents once a year and running out early to beat the tourists onto the sand — to running alone, free of the Garmin, free of the timing chips and of competition. But when it comes time to puff out my chest and march with an army in battle for the age group award, I will proudly run with a badge of courage on my chest… that’s right, the tech shirt I got on National Running Day with the badge that reads, “I Run with DFWRUNS.”

ABBY ROAD TRACK MEET By Abby Werner

M

ay 22 I had my first track meet — lets just say it didn’t go as well as I had hoped. Track for the intermediate level in my school district is more like Pre-Track, preparing us for middle school and high school and giving us a little taste of what it’s like. We only do the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and mile. I tried out for my school, and they made us try out for every event, so therefore, embarrassed myself with everything but the mile. I was both excited when I found out I had made the team and a tad surprised. At the meet the mile event was last, so I had about an hour to get more and more nervous. My mother, grandmother, and a close friend of mine came to watch me and where patient enough to wait for my event for quite a while (my dad was out of town.) When they called the milers to come to the starting line I was very anxious, so I stretched and quadruple knotted my shoes. To make it go by faster, they had the 6th grade girls and boys run together, so there were about 30 kids altogether. When the buzzer sounded everyone took off- ahead of me. I told myself that as they got tired I would pass them, but about half way through the second lap I saw that wasn’t going to happen so I increased my speed. After the third lap I felt dead tired and I still hadn’t passed anybody. I was frustrated with myself for increasing my pace, when I knew my body wasn’t used to that. There had been a girl jogging in front of me for about two laps so I was furious at my body for not having the energy to pass her. When I had about a fourth of a lap left, three guys passed me, which meant they had lapped me. Knowing that I was dead last and people were lapping me wasn’t a very encouraging thought, so I tried to cheer myself up by at least pointing out that two out of the three guys were from my school. In the end I finished in last place, but at that point, I was thrilled to have finished at all. Even though I didn’t do too well at the meet, I still am planning on doing track and crosscountry at my middle school next year. Besides it gives me something to work on this summer! I also thought I’d tell you about when I first even considered long-distance running. I was in the fifth grade and let me tell you, I hated when the coach told us we’d be running laps in PE that day. At my old school, you didn’t dress out for PE, so most of the time I had to run half a mile in flats. Towards the end of the year, we did a running unit, so I started wearing tennis shoes every day. We were racing on the last day of the running unit and the coach surprised us by saying the last race would be 800m and the girls who hadn’t raced yet would have to run in it. Since that included me, I reluctantly lined up at the starting line; when he blew the whistle I started jogging. Halfway through, most people were walking but I was still jogging. In the last twenty meters, I had to sprint to beat this other girl, but I got to the finish line before her and won! I was thrilled and started thinking that I actually could be a runner. I didn’t really start taking myself seriously about it for about another five months, but thankful that I eventually did. Now I absolutely love it and look forward to improving!
