Ports & Waterways

Gateway to solutions Gateway to solutions

Ports and waterways Over the last decades the technology of maritime and inland navigation and cargo handling has changed significantly, involving larger ships and increased traffic flows. Moreover, environmental issues have increasingly gained importance in the transportation sector. These developments call for sustainable, innovative and reliable solutions. DHV has global experience with realization, rehabilitation and upgrading of ports, waterways and coastal areas. Our multidisciplinary approach enables us to provide state-of-the-art consultancy services in planning, design and engineering, and in related fields such as integrated infrastructure development, spatial planning, and operational and environmental management. Our expertise also comprises dredging, reclamation and coastal engineering. Our involvement may span all project phases: from concept development and feasibility to engineering, design and construction management.

Our multidisciplinary approach results in sustainable, innovative and reliable solutions for port & waterway projects

Waterfronts and marinas Living, working and playing at the waterside is becoming increasingly popular. Several parties, with their own wishes and interests, want to take advantage of the waterfront. DHV brings together the needs of those parties

and investigates the development opportunities. Whether it concerns the

realization of waterfronts, water sports areas, marinas or integrated coastal development areas, our primary focus is the intertwined relationship between water, land and the urban context.

Our dedicated “water-to-land” perspective has provided clients with the success factors for their waterfront development projects. We combine a broad range of disciplines: functional zoning, layout and design of facilities and utilities, design of embankments and structures, hydraulic engineering and modelling, dredging strategies and breakwater design.

Civil and maritime structures DHV has a long track record in design, engineering, contracting and construction management of civil and maritime structures. We have been involved in a vast range of structures such as quay walls, jetties, breakwaters, navigation locks, barriers, weirs, tunnels, aquaducts, pumping-stations, and inlet and outlet structures. Realisation of these structures often requires complex building strategies and innovative designs which are embedded in DHV’s professional experience around the world. Many projects also involve our mechanical, electrical process control, traffic and logistics expertise. Our knowledge and experience are a key success factor particularly if creative and unorthodox solutions are required. Our focus on risk management is an integral part of DHV’s way of working.

Geotechnical services The geological and geotechnical characteristics of different ports, waterways and coastal construction areas are unique. Sound geotechnical

contributions are needed during investigations, engineering, contracting

and construction phases to ensure that safe and stable constructions are built. DHV offers a broad geotechnical services package that can be applied in ports, waterways and coastal projects.

Our expertise covers hydraulic structures, dams, dredging, land reclamation, landfills, developments for residential and industrial areas, and infrastructure (roads, railways, bridges and tunnels). We execute and supervise studies, designs, and field and laboratory investigations. DHV uses state-of-the-art modelling software for solid evaluation of geotechnical problems and in particular slope stability, settlements, building pit designs and foundation designs.
