A calligraphy artist shares her tricks of the trade. by Alejandra Saragoza Choose Wisely “The first step is deciding which material fits best with your wedding style,” says Giverink. “If it’s rustic, then use wood. If it’s more formal, then choose a mirror with a pretty, fancy frame.” Get Real While you may be eager to do everything yourself, be realistic about your capabilities. “[Don’t] tackle big things like seating charts unless [you’re] super crafty because [you’ll] get overwhelmed,” she says. Instead, take on the easy stuff (small drink signs, dessert menus), and leave the larger pieces (seating charts, mirrors) to the pros.

Glam It Up Add embellishments, such as leaf garlands. If your creative well is running dry, use Pinterest to get inspired. “Browse through signs to see what you love,” says Giverink. “Then, make it your own so it matches your wedding style.” Above All Else Giverink’s biggest piece of advice: Use a ruler and painter’s tape to ensure straight lines, and spell check everything before you start. “You want your sign to look professional, so check your spelling, use a ruler, and practice,” she says.

First, Mariko Giverink’s handpainted signs became popular on Etsy, where they started selling like hotcakes. Then, she picked up sign-writing gigs at local hot spots, such as Coffee Shop in Walnut Creek. Now, the Concord resident has big-name clients, including Target, and sells thousands of signs across the country. Giverink creates all types of signs for her Etsy shop, Bee Curious Designs, but her specialty is wedding decor. The artist paints specialized boards for each wedding—she never creates the same sign twice. Q: How did you learn about feng shui? A: I was living in New York City, working in software, executive development, and sales, and I felt like there was more to life than making six figures. When two of my sisters were diagnosed with cancer, I became interested in Tibetan Buddhism, which led me to feng shui. Q: How does feng shui help relationships? A: Feng shui is based on the philosophy of the Tao, that everything is connected. In practicing feng shui, we feel more aligned with the natural world. Everything has chi—or energy—and feng shui is all about creating, maintaining, and keeping the positive chi moving, while avoiding getting stuck on things that aren’t serving you. The art of feng shui is about bringing people back home to themselves and to each other, literally and figuratively. Q: How would you use it to help a new relationship? A: Feng shui is [about] space clearings and blessings. Chi energy can hang around for hundreds of years. Perhaps there was once a lot of fighting in the environment—splitting of chi—or financially draining chi; all those energies

have to be cleared. I offer indoor citrus-water blessings created specifically for the client and perform a rain of external rice blessings with very specific hand motions. Rice is a grain of nourishment that clears predecessor chi, pacifies obstacles, and replaces those with abundance and nourishment. It’s an act of generosity. Q: Can feng shui be used to pick a wedding date? A: Yes, you should pick an auspicious date using your birthday. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on a 60-year cycle with 12 animals and five elements. I recently worked with a woman who was a rabbit—a sign that harmonizes with monkey and dog—so she chose an October wedding, which corresponded to the year of the monkey and the month of the dog. Q: How did you work with her to create positive energy in her home? A: Feng shui is about recognizing the subliminal messages in your environment. What we surround ourselves with is very influential. For relationships, the goal is to create a sanctuary for rest and romance. The master bedroom should be Zen: calm, sensual, and luxurious. We bought red pillows and a gold bedspread. The floors were bare so we put down a big rug. Now, when [the couple] get out of bed, they are touching cozy surroundings. Pairs reinforce harmony, so we

picked matching bedside tables and two strong lights. And, of course, we wanted low-light options. Anthropologie sells eco soy candles that smell incredible. Q: What about the bed and its placement? A: It’s always best to start with a queen bed if possible. Split box springs make king beds a recipe for disaster. Make it one bed, not a divorce bed. And try to have a solid wall behind the headboard; it’s like having a mountain at your back. Q: What should couples avoid in their bedrooms? A: TVs are very yang. I recommend [my clients] take the TV out of their bedroom. [I] don’t like fireplaces; they’re too active and create conflict. Never paint the walls red—too yang. You would begin to “see red” and cultivate anger. [I] generally want soft, romantic wall colors. [I] encourage couples to not have pictures of their kids or images of solitary figures. Q: What about the rest of the house? A: The feng shui bagua [or energy] map locates relationship energy in the far-right corner of the house, as well as in any given room or space. It could be your dining room, your kitchen, your office or cube at work, your garage—even your car. Just go to the main entrance, point your arm to the far-right corner, and get to work! Here are 10 de-cluttering tips from Michele Duffy to empower romance in your life. Remove: • Any representations of people who are alone or single. •

Any item that is symbolic of an old relationship. Make sure any ties to relationships of yesteryear are nowhere near this corner.

• Anything in threes. •

Dead or unwelcoming plants (such as cacti), sharp objects, or art or photos of anything not clearly beautiful and loving.

•

Games—you don’t want your relationship to have games. Make sure there aren’t any in your relationship corner.

• Clutter—do not let this be your area for storage (aka “baggage”). • Anything you do not use regularly, do not like, or consider unnecessary. • Dirt and dust. (Make this area sparkle!) • Garbage cans or bags. • Anything broken or needing repair.

risten Gates and Cole Breidenbach moved to San Francisco within two weeks of each other—but when they met, the Walnut Creek natives were dating other people. Luckily, fate intervened. Soon they were single, and free to date each other. “We were instantly best friends. Everything just worked,” says Kristen. A few years later, the two planned an evening stroll through the city. The fog rolled in, but despite the weather, Cole convinced Kristen to go for that walk. “What I didn’t know is that [Cole] was trying to silently coordinate with his friend, who was dressed as a tourist and hiding with a camera to capture the [proposal],” says Kristen. The two set a summer date and chose the natural elegance of Tahoe’s Squaw Valley as their backdrop. White, green, and gray elements complemented the outdoor setting, and Kristen incorporated her love of Christmas into her big day. “It seemed appropriate that, since we were in the mountains, I should have a Christmas tree at the wedding,” she says. “I had wooden ornaments made . . . and asked guests to write us a message for our first Christmas [as newlyweds].” After a romantic escape to Tahiti, the couple moved to the East Bay. “We plan to buy a home [near] Lafayette. If Cole has his way, we will have a Bernese mountain [dog] the day after we move into our new home,” says Kristen. —Rachelle Cihonski

An Intimate Affair

Taylor Tompkins & Patrick Dunton

atrick Dunton and Taylor Tompkins both went to Las Lomas High School, but after graduation, they went their separate ways—Patrick to Chico and Taylor to San Diego. When they reconnected after college, they knew they were destined to be together. After getting engaged over a home-cooked meal, Patrick and Taylor planned an intimate wedding in Sonoma. “From the

start, the only non-negotiable for the wedding was that it be a day filled with love . . . It was important to us that we make a point of having people there that meant something to us and not get carried away with the guest list,” says Taylor. During the ceremony, Taylor wore her mother’s wedding veil, her sisters read “A Lovely Love Story,” and Patrick’s brother, Alan, officiated. The reception was full of personal touches: A wall was decorated with pictures of friends and family, songs were dedicated to guests, and Taylor did the hora in honor of her Jewish step grandmother. “I loved the hora!” says Taylor. “While I was holding on for dear life, I remember looking over at Patrick, and he was dancing and laughing. It made me happy to see him so happy. I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life.” The newlyweds honeymooned in Costa Rica in an open-air bungalow, eating farm-fresh food, hiking along private beaches, and swimming in waterfalls. The couple lives in Livermore, but hope to continue their travel adventures. —Alejandra Saragoza

hile a sophomore at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, Trevor Sollitt came up with a clever way to ask Cassia Homann to the homecoming dance. “Trevor wrote on a volleyball, ‘Will you go to the dance with me?’ and rolled it to me during class,” says Cassia, who played on the volleyball team. “I said yes!” Fast-forward to a Sunday afternoon in August 2014. Under the pretense of hitting a volleyball around at a local park, Trevor had set up the perfect serve. “I had two volleyballs with me,” says Trevor. “I switched out the first [one] with the volleyball [that had] the question written on it. I caught her completely off guard!” Cassia and Trevor capped their romantic tale with a storybook-themed wedding, naming tables after favorite books, attaching vintage keys to the place cards, and dancing to “Storybook Love” from The Princess Bride, one of their favorite movies. “It was a true party,” Cassia says. “Lots of laughter, happy tears, and sweet moments.” Cassia’s mom even surprised the bride with a choreographed dance to Mamma Mia!’s “Super Trouper,” something she had planned for an entire year. The couple honeymooned in Maui and lives in Fremont, where they are teachers. “We want to have children eventually, but for now we’re enjoying the time with just the two of us,” says Cassia. “I’ve married my best friend, so it’s a blast!” —Casey Cantrell

ark Vismonte and Julia Hu’s love story began in high school at Panda Express, when he asked her to be his girlfriend. Seven years later, they celebrated their anniversary at a location a little more fitting for the occasion: The French Laundry. They arrived at the restaurant early, and while waiting in the courtyard, a waiter brought them a covered bowl with “snacks” to munch on. Mark lifted the lid—and then Julia saw a ring. “That’s when he dropped to one knee and proposed,” says Julia. “I think I went into shock!” Julia and Mark took that same ingenuity to their wedding, personalizing the ceremony with DIY projects—such as engraved wooden escort cards made by Mark—and signature cocktails. “I wanted our guests to have fun,” says Julia. “It was absolutely the best to see our closest friends and family together to celebrate with us.” Julia and Mark honeymooned in Bora Bora, staying in an over-water bungalow. “[It was] definitely the most amazing place we’ve visited so far,” says Julia. His brother and sister-inlaw filmed the proposal, and the group celebrated with brunch at Walnut Creek’s Sunol Ridge Restaurant and Bar. Colleen planned an elegant wedding at the Fairmont San Francisco. “When we walked onto the 24th floor and saw the incredible views from the Crown Room, we knew we had to get married there,” says Colleen. From Fireworks to Forever

evin Walker and Amy Nguyen’s first (blind) date went so well, it ended with a trip to the happiest place on earth. “We had such a great time that we [ended up] going to Disneyland . . . We made it there just in time to watch the fireworks,” says Amy. Kevin had just graduated from UCLA, and Amy was a sophomore at Cal State Fullerton. Kevin, a Walnut Creek native, was moving back to the Bay to start law school at UC Berkeley. “When we decided to do long distance, we both realized that we were in the relationship for the long haul,” says Kevin. Amy transferred schools the next year, joining Kevin in NorCal. A few months later,

Kevin timed his San Francisco proposal at the marina just as the sun set behind the Golden Gate Bridge. The pair tied the knot in Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral with a reception in the ornate Julia Morgan Ballroom. “I didn’t want to get caught up in trying to match colors to a venue as beautiful as the Julia Morgan Ballroom, so I went with a neutral palette that allowed the architectural beauty of the ballroom to shine,” says Amy. But it was the personal touches that made their wedding extra special. A Polaroid camera was set next to the guest book, where friends and family could “leave a photo and wishes for the new Mr. and Mrs.” In true millennial fashion, they also custom-designed a Snapchat filter for guests to use at the wedding. To honor Amy’s heritage, the couple changed into Vietnamese ao dai gowns during the reception. Guests also took home custom-made cookies that looked like the bride and groom. After a honeymoon in Spain, the couple moved to the Lamorinda area, where they plan to start a family—after completing a semester in Asia through the Berkeley Law Field Placement Program. —R.C.
