As a local who lives on a vineyard, I eat, sleep, and breathe Wine Country. So I try not to become blind to what is in my own backyard. With each story, I ask myself, “Is this something I would care about if I lived here, and if I didn’t?” For our readers, I hope the answer for this issue is a resounding yes— even if your own line between local and tourist is a little blurred. Robin Thicke's summer hit single “Blurred Lines” may be the talk of the town, but right now it’s all about blurred vines in Wine Country, thanks to véraison. The word, adopted from the French viticulture lexicon, describes the colorful metamorphosis of ripening grapes from green to purple just before harvest. I find this vineyard Rosetta stone to be of particular relevance for Napa Sonoma magazine, as we experience our own evolution of growth and transition. Recently, I found myself in conversation with a reader about whether the magazine is for tourists or locals. It is both! We provide content that is equally compelling to those who have grown up here and those who may only visit once in a lifetime. After all, studies show that as much as 75 percent of Wine Country’s “tourists” drive in from nearby areas. So who exactly is local? With an eye for fresh stories for both old friends and new acquaintances, this issue features exciting new openings, such as The Barlow in Sebastopol, as well as a look at established winemakers in a fresh way: through their international roots and influence. But our coverage goes beyond the issue in your hands. Napa Sonoma is launching a monthly e-newsletter highlighting 10 must-dos (visit napasonomamag.com to sign up) and an expanded

BABY, YOU CAN DRIVE MY CAR
W
When he was a boy growing up in Brighton,
England, Richard Martin was keen on cars. He liked looking at them, loved riding in them, and later adored driving them. In the late 1970s, Martin put the pedal to the metal and became a race-car driver. Today, the transplanted Briton owns a Sonoma company that sells special parts for race cars. Martin recently turned the ignition on a new project, DB Autosportif, which rents elegant and sporty classic cars to Wine Country visitors and locals alike. 2+2, and you’ve got the general idea. “I’ve been involved in the racing business and around cars my whole career,” says Martin, whose parent company, Brits, sells gear to NASCAR and Indy racing teams. When his core business slowed due to the recession, he decided to diversify, and DB Autosportif was born. “With the ideal climate here, driving a beautiful car is a lovely way to enjoy the area. You can drive through the valleys and out to the coast, and put the top down,” he says. “We have a lot of convertibles, two-seaters, and four-seaters, a mix of sticks and automatic transmission. You
can rent for half or full day, overnight, as long as you want.” The company will even deliver the selected vehicle to the renter. The fleet of 15 cars is insured for up to $1 million, according to Martin, who says the company has discreetly installed new electronics and gearboxes in certain models. “We wanted to make them not only beautiful but reliable, while keeping the cars’ iconic look and form.” Finally, an alternative to the stretch limousine—Ferris Bueller approved. Linda Hamilton’s shop is a journey—in every sense of the word. Aptly named Nomad Chic, it is the latest manifestation of her far-flung travels to root out her indigenous style. Delectable wares from Java, India, Australia, Bali, and Spain occupy every corner of its space in the charming Yellow House, just a few steps from the Sonoma Square. “I’ve always explored the world like a gypsy, with my treasures stashed in a magic carpetbag,” Hamilton says. Sharing her love of the peripatetic made sense at this stage in her life. With a school-age daughter and a thriving fashion career, she has planted her feet on this continent for the time being. “Now, I’m an adapted nomad, with two tents and a modem,” she says with a laugh. (She spends the winters in Todos Santos, Mexico.) Discoveries from every continent create a veritable Pangea in her pop-up, where covetable agate and leather bracelets nestle alongside suede fringed 20 | F A L L 2 0 1 3
shawls sourced from a remote archipelago in Southeast Asia. She picks up a shawl, shaking it toreador style, and arranges it as an overthe-shoulder accessory, a low-slung skirt, and then an insouciant drape over a sofa. Diaphanous caftans and silky kimonos hang ready to transform Wine Country wanderers into beachside Bond girls. “I love taking an unknown turn towards a tattered canvas awning in an open-air market,” she says, recalling the spicy souks of Marrakech and the sands of Zanzibar. “I hope to capture that evocative feeling of discovery for all adventurers in Wine Country.” 156 E. experience often feels about as exciting as shampoo instructions: wash, rinse, repeat. Or: enter room, stand at bar, sip wine. VGS Chateau Potelle’s new Tasting House and Garden in St. Helena is a welcomed breath of fresh, inspired air, with wines accompanied by bespoke bites from La Toque restaurant. Formerly on Mount Veeder, the tasting room’s new address just off highway 29 beckons with its charming white cottage building and pastel yellow door punctuated by French and American flags. Says proprietor Jean-Noel Fourmeaux du Sartel, “Our visitors are accustomed to enjoying wine in their home or in a restaurant, so our tasting house and garden was designed to create that sophisticated and gracious environment.” While the outdoor garden tent is reserved for club members, visitors can sit in petite banquettes, or stand at the communal table for a refined yet informal setting. The cheerful interior decor complements the exquisite wines, each paired in a four-bite flight prepared by chef Ken Frank’s team at the Michelin-starred eatery. “Ken thinks about wine with every dish he creates,” says Fourmeaux du Sartel. “He has the best pairing program in Napa Valley, and we are thrilled to be working with him.” One pairing included a Moroccan morsel of lamb with the VGS 2009 Syrah, as well as buckwheat soba noodles and the Inevitable 2011 white blend. Don’t forget to inquire about the double entendre behind the VGS acronym. (We won’t spoil the secret.) While the nibbles will help make this the toque of the town, it is that je ne sais quoi of the wines that makes us eager to return. 1200 Dowdell Ln., St. Helena, (707) 255-9440, vgschateaupotelle.com. —Kimberly Miller

O Canada Cliff Lede Vineyards stays grounded in northern roots.
_
A builder by profession, Cliff Lede began his wine journey to Napa Valley in Edmonton, Canada, where he developed an affinity for the grape while making wine with his mother in the family’s basement. As an adult, he became an avid collector of Bordeaux and purchased vineyards in the Stags Leap District to make his own Bordeaux-style wines under the Cliff Lede label. “The wine business is an international exchange of ideas,” Lede says. “While we have had harvest interns from several countries, we have an important ambassador in master sommelier Jennifer Huether. From her home in Toronto, she introduces Cliff Lede wines to restaurants and collectors across Canada.” Open daily. China Swirl NBA meets Cabernet at Yao Family Wines.
While sports celebrities turned vintners have made their mark in the valley (Mario Andretti, Tom Seaver), only one holds the distinction of carrying the Chinese flag into the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. That credit belongs to Yao Ming, proprietor of Yao Family Wines. Ming, a former NBA star, developed a love for Napa Valley wines while playing on the road with the Houston Rockets. After retiring from the game, Ming debuted Yao Family Wines in 2011 and couldn’t wait to introduce Napa wine to China and share the fruits of his passion. “To me, wine and food invoke a feeling of friends and family coming together,” says Ming. The bottles’ labels feature an illustration of Napa Valley by artist Chuck House that reflects Ming’s heritage with the ancient Chinese character for Yao. Yao Family Wines is not open for visits. Persian Perfection The architecture and wines of Darioush leave a lasting impression.
MOANA JEFFREY PHOTOGRAPHY
_
Darioush, affectionately known as “the Persian Palace,” is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic winery buildings. The yellow stone exteriors were quarried near Iran’s Persepolis region, the ancient capital of Persia. Owner Darioush Khaledi, who grew up in Shiraz, Iran, left the country for a new life in Southern California, where he owns a successful grocery business. In 2004, he opened his winery just south of Yountville as a temple of Persian hospitality. From the architecture to the bowls of pistachios at the tasting bar—a customary offering in Persian homes—Darioush celebrates the Khaledi family’s origin, and their warm spirit shines in the experiences they offer. Don’t miss the tasting in Darioush’s private cellar, featuring his own Bordeaux collection along with winery favorites. Open daily. Darioush, 4240 Silverado Trail, Napa, (707) 257-2345, darioush.com.

Eau de France Aromas abound from Morlet Family Vineyards’ blends.
_
M.J. WICKHAM
Luc Morlet is a fourth-generation winemaker whose family grew grapes in Champagne, France. He started in the trade plowing fields at age 13 and later worked in Bordeaux, before moving to Napa Valley in 1996, where he met his wife, Jodie. While he crafts wines for several Napa Valley wineries, his own label, Morlet Family Vineyards, best expresses his French roots. Also a fragrance fan, Morlet blended a perfume at the Galimard perfume house in Grasse, France, the perfume capital of the world. That custom-made scent inspired his La Proportion Dorée blend, an aromatic combination of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The winery’s logo, which represents blending old- and new-world wine-making techniques, is based on a 19th century French sculpture, L’Harmonie, which sits on the fireplace mantel in Morlet’s home. The winery experience at Palmaz Vineyards is inspired by the best of Argentinean accommodations. The Palmaz Vineyards Brasas wine club hosts an annual asado event, where it treats members to a traditional Argentinean barbecue. Needing the perfect wine to pair with the feast, the Buenos Aires–born owners created a special blend of malbec, Argentina’s signature grape, to make the celebration truly authentic. The Palmaz winery is completely underground—wine-making equipment, caves, and all—the equivalent of an 18-story building. This gravity-flow structure is the innovation of the owners, Julio Palmaz, M.D., and his wife, Amalia. No stranger to invention, Julio is best known for co-developing the coronary Palmaz-Schatz stent, which earned him entry into the Inventors Hall of Fame, as well as his collection of vintage Porsche race cars. Kobe Cabernet Dalla Valle Vineyards substitutes sake for Sauvignon.
_
When Naoko Dalla Valle and her late husband, Gustavo, arrived in Napa in 1982, the plan was to build a world-class restaurant and spa. But after acquiring an exceptional hillside in Oakville, they decided to hire the best in the business, plant vines, and build a wine label instead. Given Gustav’s family of winemakers in Italy, it was a natural alternative. Though her ancestors mastered sake, Naoko, who grew up in Kobe, Japan is considered to be one of the grande dames of the region, often lauded along the likes of Ann Colgin and Delia Viader. Naoko’s Japanese heritage is evident in the name for her premiere bottling, Maya, named for her daughter, which derives from Lady Maya, the mother of Buddha, and the Maya temple in Kobe. Dalla Valle Vineyards is not open for visits. (707) 944-2676, dallavallevineyards.com.
Hungarian Heritage Engineering the dream at Kapcsandy Family Winery.
Lou Kapcsandy’s journey to the Napa Valley is a most improbable one. He escaped his native Budapest, Hungary, in 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, and arrived in America with no money and unable to speak a word of English. Kapcsandy studied engineering, and eventually ran one of the largest industrial general contractors in the country. Upon retiring to pursue his hobby of collecting Bordeaux wines, he purchased a Yountville vineyard, which marked the beginning of Kapcsandy Family Winery. From the coat of arms on the wine label paying homage to his native country to the Hungarian antiques that adorn the winery, Kapcsandy’s homeland is far but not forgotten. “We try to reflect the long and illustrious wine-making history in Hungary in the Kapcsandy Family wines by using Hungarian barrels, in which about 10 percent of our red wines are aged. And that is meaningful to us,” he says. Visits by appointment. Kapcsandy Family Winery, 1001 Star Ln., Yountville, (707) 948-3100, kapcsandywines.com.

The Spirit of South Korea An importer realizes his lifelong dream with Dana Estates.
_
Dana Estates takes its name from the Sanskrit word for “the spirit of generosity.” It also happens to be the childhood nickname of owner Hi Sang Lee. While working in South Korea importing California wines for enthusiasts, Lee dreamed of creating his own Napa Valley cult wine. His Dana Estates label turned this vision into reality and has a significant following in South Korea. Through his venture, Lee says he is able to “share our good fortune,” through philanthropic activities such as Auction Napa Valley, where his lot sold twice, the second highest of the day at $1.02 million—a generous contribution to the Napa Valley nonprofit beneficiaries, to say the least. MARKET PLACE — Sebastopol stakes its claim, with a sophisticated shopping and dining arcade.
By David Armstrong / Photography by Norma Cordova

S
Shivering in the frigid temperatures typical of Chicago winters, Barney Aldridge and his parents knew there had to be something better, somewhere. So in 1976, with the California sunshine calling, the Aldridges packed into the family car, drove west to Wine Country, and reinvented themselves in a Fulton vineyard. Fast-forward to 2013, when Aldridge, now a successful developer living in Marin, has planted the seeds for The Barlow, a multi-faceted retail, food, and drink destination blossoming in Sebastopol. Visitors will discover a bustling artisanal community of organic coffee and yerba maté vendors, a bronze foundry and glass-blowing artist, vintage and contemporary clothing boutiques, winetasting rooms, and fine-dining restaurants—all sharing one address. Just shy of 13 acres and spread across 17 buildings, The Barlow occupies the site of the former Barlow Apple Cannery and retains part of the original moniker in honor of Sebastopol’s heritage.
34 | F A L L 2 0 1 3
The design is sophisticated meets sustainable: corrugated metal buildings with high ceilings, spacious interiors, and large roll-up glass windows. “We call the architecture ‘farm industrial,’” Aldridge says. The Barlow is deliberately local, with Sonoma businesses sewing their wild oats in a fresh, communal place. Massive windows and ease of public access are integral to the interactive experience at The Barlow. “This allows people to see how things are made and buy directly from the artisans.” But the project almost didn’t happen. Aldridge, who has developed residential, retail, and office space in California and Colorado, originally planned the site for 300 condominiums. Because of opposition from the community, Aldridge reimagined his plan. Now, realizing he made the right decision, he is inspired by how the project has progressed. The Barlow forms a commercial and cultural ecosystem, where, Aldridge says, “People appreciate engaging with others who are equally passionate about what they
are purveying. It’s a pretty tight community, and it’s growing, continually unfolding, like a flower.” Many of The Barlow’s 30-plus vendors have opened their doors, with others expected to arrive by the end of the year. Coming attractions include clothing boutiques, and myriad winetasting rooms by the likes of Marimar Estate Vineyards and Winery, MacPhail Family Wines, La Follette Wines, and Wind Gap Wines. Small-batch gin and whiskey makers Spirit Works Distillery will pour spirits, while beer lovers swill brews at Woodfour Brewing Co. and Warped Brewing Co. Also on the horizon are a farmers market, a vintage and specialty bookshop, garden delights from Lynn’s Lavender, and Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt. With all it has to choose from, The Barlow may be the ideal destination to enjoy the changing weather this fall. 200 Morris St., Sebastopol, (707) 824-5600, thebarlow.net. ■

But arrive at the Keller Estate winery, and you immediately recognize the diamond in the rough. ¶ Not only is this vast property visually captivating, with vineyards blanketing 90 of its 800 acres, but its history and exceptional wines make it Sonoma Coast’s best-kept secret—until now. Arturo Keller and his wife, Deborah, bought the estate 32 years ago to enjoy with their four children. While the vineyards weren’t planted, a small batch of chardonnay grapes took root in 1989, which they sold to Rombauer Vineyards. Ten years later, the Kellers took the plunge into Pinot Noir, releasing the first under their own label in 2000. They opened the doors to the public in 2010, offering winery tours and tastings. Now, their daughter, Ana, who lives on the grounds with her own family, manages operations as director of winemaking. “I started coming to Wine Country when we bought our family property,” Keller reminisces, before leading our tour. “I was about 17 years old, and Petaluma was much slower then.” While their family lineage originates in Switzerland and is rooted in wine (Keller is German for “cellar”), Keller and her siblings grew up in Mexico, where her father made his mark in car manufacturing. Other siblings also play a role in the winery. “My sister is an artist and designed the stained glass,” 38 | F A L L 2 0 1 3
Keller says, pointing to massive sliding doors encircling the winery’s courtyard. Each set of doors is a tribute to one of the four seasons, with one illustrated with a vintage car—a nod to her father’s worldrenowned automobile collection. Keller appreciates her sister’s symbolism. “I always want our visitors to feel that they learned something new about my family and our desire to show what a true estate is. As a family, we are present in many details that you see.” On our way to the caves, an arched tunnel eventually funnels us into a state-of-the art tank room featuring gravity-flow technology, where a domed skylight cheerfully illuminates an otherwise sterile space. Keller was bitten by the fermentation bug early and studied biochemistry. Ever the scientist, her passion spills over as she discusses her labor of love. “Being a trained chemist, I am always trying to understand science. I guess that is why we have a comparative tasting. I love seeing eyes light up when people understand malolactic fermentation, and how it tastes.
“Some people feel wine is an art while others believe it is all the result of science,” she says, maintaining that a balanced wine is truly an art form. Making our way back to the tasting room, Keller shares that the winery’s design was a collaboration involving the internationally esteemed Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, whose strutctures span the globe. We conclude our tour by toasting Keller’s 25th year of grape growing and tasting the two Chardonnays—our favorite being the 2009 Oro de Plata— both superb in structure and finish. Wine production at the estate totals only 5,000 cases, under the supervision of consulting winemaker Alex Holman, whose résumé includes a stint at Paul Hobbs. While the production is limited, Keller notes that allocations of both varietals are reserved for the Peninsula Hotels group, as a private label offered on its wine lists worldwide. Though her father is unable to join our tour, Keller notes how his encouragement has aided her success in putting this once-private estate on the award-winning Wine Country map. “My father is my inspiration, as he continues each day to make it better than the previous one. Knowing that I have his support, eyes, patience, and guidance has helped me be a better person, who understands that life is better lived if you love what you do.” The tasting room at Keller Estate is open Friday through Sunday. 5875 Lakeville Hwy., Petaluma, (707) 765-2117, kellerestate.com. ■

Yountville Yountville, the unofficial culinary capital of Wine Country, is also home to a charming array of specialty shops, many of them at V Marketplace, a group of historic buildings built and once owned by a German winemaker. Award-winning restaurants, art galleries, and a variety of clothing and gift boutiques round out a collection of more than a dozen stores and art venues. A few blocks away, in a historic brick manor, Ma(i)sonry pairs wine tasting with art. St. Helena Characterized by old-fashioned small-town charm, St. Helena’s shops range from boutiques and olive oil purveyors to stores that feature handcrafted linens, Italian ceramics, chocolates, and fine jewelry. For art lovers, St. Helena boasts three art galleries, offering everything from pastoral landscape paintings to contemporary sculpture.

Napa The hardworking commercial center of Napa Valley has undergone a major revitalization, providing locals and visitors alike with myriad reasons to explore its flourishing downtown. Sample artisanal breads, meats, cheeses, farm-stand produce, and local wines at Oxbow Public Market; and take a walking tour to a few of the dozen tasting rooms. Napa is also home to mixed-media artist Gordon Huether’s galleries and several premier shopping centers, including Bel Aire Plaza and Napa Premium Outlets, which features some 50 discount and factory stores, including Barneys New York, TSE, CAbi, Ann Taylor, and Michael Kors.

Calistoga At the northern point of Napa Valley, Calistoga feels less like a wine town and more like a throwback to the Wild West. Wooden storefronts and cottage shops still feature horse-hitching posts, and a handful of down-home saloons keeps the old-time spirit alive. The Calistoga Train Depot, the second oldest train depot in the state, includes six restored railcars that house historical exhibits, shops, and a wine-tasting room. The primary reason visitors flock to Calistoga, however, is the spas—at least a dozen of which line Lincoln Avenue and surrounding streets. Most draw on the area’s bubbling underground hot springs and volcanic ash to create Calistoga’s famous mud baths.
Petaluma This historic riverfront town is characterized by perfectly preserved Victorian architecture, homey restaurants, and a wide variety of art galleries, bookstores, home and garden boutiques, and antiques shops that line its main downtown streets. Petaluma is also home to Petaluma Village Premium Outlets, which features 60 factory outlet stores, including BCBG Max Azria, Coach, and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th. Sonoma Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma and a historic plaza anchor the town of Sonoma, which is rooted in a Spanish and Mexican heritage. The plaza is surrounded by tiled adobes, restored period hotels, charming shops, restaurants, and winetasting rooms. To get the full flavor of Sonoma, stop in at
the Sonoma Cheese Factory or Vella Cheese Company for some of the county’s famous Jack cheese. For a look at Sonoma’s artistic side, head to Cornerstone Sonoma, where you’ll find garden installations created by noted landscape designers, along with architectural salvage and home furnishings shops. Glen Ellen Just north of Sonoma on Highway 12, Glen Ellen is a bucolic little bend in the road worth a detour. Author Jack London made Glen Ellen his home, and his ranch is now part of Jack London State Historic Park, which contains London’s cottage, his grave site, and a museum. Jack London Village, in the town proper, is a great place to sample Sonoma County olive oil, cheese, chocolates, and local wines.
Healdsburg Healdsburg, which celebrated its 150th birthday not too long ago, is laid out Spanishstyle, with a picturesque old-fashioned plaza at its center that hosts art and wine festivals, outdoor concerts, a farmers market, and innumerable picnickers throughout the year. Surrounding the square are gourmet ice-cream shops, posh boutiques, art galleries, antiques shops, epicurean grocers, wine-tasting salons, acclaimed restaurants, and charming inns.
and Courthouse Square is the focal point of Santa Rosa’s business district, a convergence of retail shops, restaurants, and office buildings. A modern-day mall, Montgomery Village shopping center off Highway 12, features more than 80 stores, including jewelry, home furnishings, and fashion boutiques.
Santa Rosa The largest city in Sonoma County, Santa Rosa has three main downtown districts: Historic Railroad Square features shops, restaurants, and cafés housed in restored turn-of-the-century stone buildings; Santa Rosa Plaza is a two-level mall, with more than 120 specialty stores; N A P A S O N O M A | 71

30 years ago we purchased a small Rutherford Vineyard and founded Peju Province Winery. Today we are still a family-owned estate winery with daughters Ariana and Lisa now farming our vineyards and ensuring the quality of our wines. We invite you to discover a garden oasis in the heart of the Napa Valley and to experience our family hospitality. Peju Province Winery
