I always knew I wanted to give back to those in need because I know what's it's like to be without a place to stay, no food, no water, and no heat. It was hard for me. I can also remember after my parents divorced, my mom struggled, and she was working three jobs (still barely making ends meet).
Written by Larendra McDonald
She made my clothes and I loved that because I knew no one else had that lol. I didn't know we were struggling but do recall hearing my mom crying in the middle of the night about not having money. My mom sacrificed so much for me and still does. At an early age I had nowhere to live, had a hard time getting to and from school and work. I ended up living in a roach and pest infested trailer that had holes in the floor, no heat, no air, no stove, or hot water. It was a tough time, but my pride would not let me go back depending on anyone. I struggled for years on years, but it led me to have a successful business. My business name came from my daughter who is now 2 years old. There is so much to my story that I wish it was a movie or book so people could see the whole picture. I work hard every day to make my business grow so I can continue to do more for my community, people in need, those in Africa, and the other people I love and care about. It's enough people in the world to help each other so that we all can survive and be able to eat.

Photo Courtesy Jamie Hughes Written by Jamie Hughes Guiding K.I.N.G.S.(Knowledgeable, Ingenious, Noble, Genuine, Successful) is a grassroots start up organization that is seeking to inspire young men’s development in all areas of healthy male development. Guiding K.I.N.G.S. was established by Jamie Hughes and William Gunn, Waco natives, who are now living in the Dallas area, to give back to the areas surrounding Waco that nurtured them along the way.
Our first foray into mentorship consisted of an outdoor session where the volunteer staff of Guiding K.I.N.G.S. demonstrated checking oil on motor vehicles, changing tires on motor vehicles, as well as selected proper preventative maintenance techniques. The outdoor session was followed up by lunch and an intentional conversation session indoors at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Our mentor and mentees had a chance to make formal introductions and find out the scope and depth of the Guiding K.I.N.G.S. program going forward. As Guiding K.I.N.G.S. moves forward into full formal organizational structure, we will continue to recruit mentors and accept mentees.

• We seal all hair wefts with glue, so when you are running a brush through your hair it does not leave the floor looking like someone just shaved your head… and it keeps the wefts thin to make the hair easier to weave and lay flat. (Your stylist will thank you) • We remove any nits by hand and only use organic apple cider vinegar and organic shampoos to sanitize our hair. We do not use insecticides or harsh detergents, that stuff just damages the hair and makes your head itch like crazy! No head patting necessary… we keep it itch-free around here. • We don’t use any chemicals, perms, or hot curling irons on our hair to further prevent any damage or that crazy smell you get from those! No stinky hair here folks! • All of those extra measures we do make our hair durable, shiny, and hair that will last!

Written by Ti-Tianna Smith The number of black businesses and minority individuals wanting to work for themselves or start their own business is growing at a rapid pace. Conversations are had daily amongst the minority community, especially the millennials, about financial freedom, freedom of time, ownership, the economy, generational wealth, and building wealth. We as a whole are becoming more conscious, educated and proactive about our future, our families, and our legacies. According to the US Black Chambers, Inc. (also known as USBC), “African-American businesses have grown at an exponential rate in the 21st century; at 1.9 million Black businesses in 2012 and 2.6 million in 2015!” Minority of all races and economic background are looking for their next move to be their best move in secure financial security, stability, and independence. Here are a few tips WE should consider as a community (Merchant and Consumer) to help minority communities flourish: Cited Source: Craig, Eric. “The State of Black Businesses in the United States.” U.S. Black Chambers, Inc.. Daily News Weekly. 21 February 2017. Usblackchamber.org/news-events/ucbc-blog/383-the-state-ofblack-businesses-in-the-united-states
1. Prioritize Customer Service • Put customer service systems and policies in place. Post them around your business and promote them as a part of your business structure. • Posted policies become known and respected policies and promote a “Community of Standard.” • Community of Standard equals an Atmosphere of Positivity • Setting these standards are VITAL to our existence in US economics and our stamp on the world. Our community depends on us. • When you are the customer have the same standards, you would want a client of yours to have and follow. • Good customer service is an investment back into your community. 2. Remember it is bigger than you and your business. 3. If we succeed, we will change the perception of the black business, INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DAYS THE BLACK DOLAR ROTATES WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, and increase our communities’ value. 4. Don’t believe or promote the stigma that Black businesses are less valuable, less organize, and less effective. #PERIOD 5. Find ways to invest back into your business & COMMUNITY that are visible to your client base. 6. Develop a visible track record of your growth. 7. Learn from every encounter. There is a lesson in every interaction. 8. AS A BLACK CONSUMER WE MUST UNDERSTAND • BLACK VENDORS TYPICALLY ARE WORKING WITH A SMALLER CAPITAL AMOUNT; THEREFORE, THEY ORDER LESS SUPPLIES/PRODUCT AT A TIME AND ARE CHARGED MORE. This explains why many say “Black businesses are more expensive.” 9. BANK BLACK! 14
