On June 27th Diamond Elite Magazine & Co. owner, Kandice Sherril, hosted the Apply the Pressure event in honor of the launch of the newest product of DEM & Co the Apply the Pressure Entrepreneur Toolbox. The toolbox is filled with tips, breakdowns, and facts for start-up entrepreneurs, and those who have been running a business, but may have become stuck. The event was held at the Castle Heights Bijoux Event Center in Waco, TX and had dozens of people from the community out to gain knowledge, shop, eat and enjoy good vibes around likeminded people. Speakers included Christi Black Evans, Lakendra Dugas, and The Sassy Motivator, Farrah Ratliff. The audience in attendance heard about the journey of veteran entrepreneurs and full transparency on how they have applied the pressure on their journey. “Make the job work for you…think of a job as on the job training,” stated Christi, implying that if you want to be an entrepreneur and still work a 9-5 it’s OK, just make sure you’re learning skills and techniques that can be applied to your very own business. Dugas came in with letting the audience know to pray over their business, and journey in life overall. The Sassy Motivator came in with emotions and a powerful speech of how she overcame loss with close loved ones, and while still grieving, to push through the storm.

Mattress The Story Holder, is a book of poems... short poetic stories of life. Just when you thought it was only you who knew your story... guess what, the mattress also knew and kept your most intimate, and secret journey's through out.
Your are my poetry, in the middle of the night the mattress has me waking up early, deep thoughts of you and I, when I felt as if I was suffocating, you reminded me… there's two ways to breathe, when I felt like I was drowning, you taught me how to hold my breath until I floated to safety, it was your love that has saved me, during the days the sky was grey and rainy, you reminded me it was only temporary, for grey doesn't exist in the color spectrum naturally, so this too shall pass, blue skies will always outlast, now I'm seeing a rainbow from end to end, and it's evident you are my pot of gold, my lover my poetry my friend, in the midst of all this brainstorming I must have shaken the mattress, because you leaned over half awakened, and said…"baby I love you are you ok", those seven words connected deeply and mentally, as I laid back down and commenced to hold you tightly. Rodney Dewayne is original, authentic and humble, “I don't know how to be anyone else, you want rough around the edges you've got it, you want love and kindness you've got it,” Dewayne stated. When asked the reason(s) of what made him begin poetry, he shared that while growing up he wasn’t the popular guy and when sharing parts of his life with peer he would hear it repeated or made fun of, so he decided his secrets were safe on paper until he was ready to make them known. Dewayne believes his poetry relates to everyone, “I truly believe I relate to everyone, but rather they are mindful of that is on them…the thought behind it is for the wittiness and direction, but other than that I just write what’s on my heart, and in my heart whether it’s happy, hurting, strong, weak, courageous, betrayed, excited, dissatisfied, grieving, healing, praying, fighting,” Dewayne shared. Rodney Dewayne’s slogan is, The Best Poet You Know, so of course he was asked how it came to be. Dewayne admitted that not many people around his way grew up writing or knowing anything about poetry, so when he would allow them to hear it or read it, they would jokingly but seriously say that he was the best poet that they know. “Everywhere I went, I received that response and not saying it wasn’t other great poets, it’s just the ones who felt me, made it a point to let me know and that encouragement gave me the confidence to walk in my greatness…” Dewayne added. We went on to ask if the slogan itself has ever offended anyone, “It shouldn’t be offending anyone but instead motivate them, the slogan is a reminder to self that I must be at my best since that’s where I set the bar, and the slogan wasn’t meant to mean I’m the best in the world, but it is my way of stating that I am great as any poet…” he stated. Dewayne would like to give any aspiring writer or entrepreneur these words, “Off top,, God is everything, nothing happens without his love and grace, then believe – and in that belief decide that no weapons formed against you will prosper and nothing can stop you. Find a hero, someone or anyone with a wealth of success and information, study and learn from them then apply it where it fits into your goals and plans, then repeat the process…”

The short answer is no. However, let’s break down what was said and perspective. When Mo’Nique came out and initially stated what she felt about women in public wearing bonnets, she wasn’t wrong and not trying to steer anyone into an uproar about appearance. Although as an opinion, it is a particularly good analogy. She was stating that when you get out of bed, and get ready for the day, you should comb your hair, put on clothes and be the best you. When you look better, you feel better. As individuals in business, you should always want to be presentable and be able to represent your brand, which in most cases you are the biggest part of your brand. Something as small as going to the convenience store, grocery store, or airport in your bonnet looks bad for business. It gives the notion of comfortable as well as lazy. Bonnets are meant to be a hair protector when sleeping. Visualize this perspective, you’re a business owner and many know who you are, you should be at your best and feeling your best anytime you are in public. If you don’t care about presentation and how you represent your brand, do as you please. Feel different? Let us know!
