Key To Being the Best Lt. Governor D8-A Lt. Governor Diana Piktel
Pep Talk __________________
If you’re reading this, you are most likely a Lieutenant Governor Elect, or are interested in running for Lieutenant Governor for the next service year! If you are a Lt. Governor elect, congratulations!! Honestly, this will be one of the best years of your life. This position is so unique and will take you on adventures where you meet new people, and make memories that will last a lifetime. I will admit, there is a lot of work put into this position. Get ready for many emails, monthly newsletters, traveling to board meetings, and again, emails (you’ll be getting/writing a lot of those). Although it’s a lot of work, you will have the best time ever. I have spent time looking through pictures of where I have traveled and who I have met and I teared up thinking about all the memories I have made while serving this position. Another thing, I’m going to be honest with you, you might cry and be stressed at times. We’ve all been there. (Sorry if I’m making you hate the position now haha). BUT the most important thing to remember as LTG is NO ONE IS PERFECT. If you make a mistake, don’t be upset. If you forget to do something, don’t be upset. Things will go wrong, but remember that it happens to everyone. Work hard, and reach your own goals for your division. Do NOT compare yourself to others because you are your own person and make your own goals. Every division is different and every Ltg works differently to get their clubs going. Set goals for yourself and work hard to reach them. When you do, be proud of yourself and don’t stress about anything if something goes wrong. Please remember, it’s OK to make mistakes. I wish you luck in your service year! Be the best Ltg your divisions ever had ☺ -Division 8-A Lt. Governor Diana Piktel

•These are the most important people to talk to during your term. Once you are elected, you should know who your Kiwanis Committee Representative (KCR) is and have the best relationship with them. They are here to help you through your term with anything you need. •Have a strong relationship with your KCRs. You should be contacting them at least once a week about what you are up to •Your KCRs will drive you up to board meeting, help you with division events, attend your divisionals, take YOU to Kiwanis divisionals, and so much more! •CC them in every. Single. Key club email you send out.
e Representatives _________________________________________________________________________
As Lieutenant Governor, I really mean it when I say contact them about EVERYTHING. If you are: •Planning a divisional •Thinking of planning an event •Having trouble contacting a club •In need of KC related transportation •Having a bad day •Having a good day! CONTACT YOUR KCRS Tell them everything, they are happy to help you with anything you need.
Divisionals ___________________________
Divisionals are monthly meetings you will hold with your division. Plan divisionals with your KCRs in order to discuss a date, location, and time they can come. Try to announce your divisionals within two weeks of your due date. Email your clubs, post it on social media, and do everything you can to get the best attendance. Both Officers and members are invited! Invite your KCR, Kiwanians, advisors, and clubs in your divisions. If you have a board meeting that month, it would be best to hold your divisional after the meeting so you have all of your own information, plus the district information. After divisionals, you will need to fill out a divisional report form on the nydkc website. This will cover attendance, agenda, and basic questions about your meeting Link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/ 10_4LAmPKm7xnA7JfssYH4f1KtrIlI_r3OySNph_yVMM/ viewform Make an agenda do hand out to your clubs and guests. A template/example of my agenda is show on the next page
Newsletters!! ________________________________________________
Hopefully you already know what newsletters are and read the ones your past Lt. Governor has made. In fact, this whole training document can be an example of a newsletter! Lucky for you, but also you sadly need to make these for your division monthly. I say sadly because they do take some time, but the best part about these is you get to be super creative about the way you make them and with what you put into them. Personally, I think Powerpoint is much easier to make newsletters on, but you can also make them on Microsoft Word, or Publisher, or anything you want honestly. The district editor will be sending monthly emails with newsletter “logs” that you need to follow to make your newsletters. These basically tell you what you need to include in your newsletters for your divisions to see. Oh and also, you’re being graded on these… monthly. Don’t freak out though! If you have fun with making newsletters and include everything said in the log, you will surely get a perfect score! Word of advice: Please do no wait till the last few days of the month to make your newsletter… you’ll regret it.
Issuu: This is the website you will share your newsletters on to. You will get a sharing link, which you will email out to your division, the district editor, governor, your KCRs, and the District Administrator. Link: https://issuu.com/home/publisher Example of one of my newsletters!: http://issuu.com/ dianapiktel/docs/july_newsletter The Empire Key: District Newsletter: http://issuu.com/ nydistrictkeyclub/docs/may_june_empire_key_pdf
Get your clubs to send you monthly articles about what different service projects/ events they’ve held! Have them write a description of the event/ project, what they did, and how others can participate next time! Make sure you get A LOT of pictures to make your newsletters more creative! Constantly remind your clubs to send articles. It will make your life a lot easier.
Building Club Icebreakers: Bring your division closer together as a family! An easy way to make quick friends at divisionals is icebreakers. Yeah, we all hate them at first but they turn out to be really funny at the end and you can make new friends! You can also hold events for specific officers/ board members so they can get to know each other better in order for them to work together during the service year!! Emails/Social Media: If you can’t get your word across by email, take advantage of social media! Everyone is on their phone nowadays and a great way to have your division talk is by a group chat! Start a group chat with your officers and try to get them to talk. It may be hard at first, but they’ll eventually get comfortable!
Relationships Club Visits: An important way to keep a nice relationship with all your clubs is to visit them during their club meetings. Try to schedule a day and time to meet with your club and talk during their meeting. Tell them who you are, and what you are expecting from them. I assure you they will be excited to know that they have an active Lieutenant Governor and will want to work harder. If they are a club who does not fill out paperwork or attend divisionals, you can talk to them about that at the visit, or fill out paperwork with the officers to get it done! They can’t say no since you’re already there.

Have a Division Board! ______________________________________________________________________________
You may need some help this year serving as Lieutenant Governor. Because of all your responsibilities, you may want other Key Clubbers to help you during your term. The best solution for this is to have an executive board. You can have an Executive Assistant, Secretary, Webmaster, Events Committee or anything you feel needed for your division. You can have an Executive Assistant to help you with literally anything you need. A secretary would be extremely helpful to take notes during your divisional that you can easily copy and paste into your divisional report form. A webmaster can help you with an social media pages you have or write articles for your newsletter. Lastly you can have an events committee to help you with division projects to raise money as a division. You can have as many people as you think you need on the board. Have an EA and secretary, or even 2 EAs a webmaster, and a secretary! You are open to do whatever you think would help you most. Send out an application to your division for each position, interview them, and do whatever it takes to find the best person to help you! This is a very good way to train underclassmen who could possibly run for Lt. Governor in the next service year. They will follow you around so much they will basically already know the position and have a good chance when running.
Traveling & Board
__________________________________________________________________________
The most important part of being Lieutenant Governor is PARENT CONSENT As Lieutenant Governor, you will be traveling A LOT. Whether you’re going to a board meeting, a Kiwanis Divisional, or even a club visit, you will be out an about quite often. Your parents need to be aware that you will be traveling and that there are possibilities of you missing days of school. I personally have not missed any days of school for Key Club, but depending on where you live and where you are traveling, there is a chance you may need to. Board meetings are the best part of being a part of the district board. It is the time where you get to see your best friends after not seeing them for months! The Governor runs the meetings and sends out agendas through email that you will need to print. Let me warn you, the actually board meeting is really long and you might want to fall asleep at times, but they pass quick and it is a time to find ideas on things you can do with your clubs and think about ways to improve anything you may want to do as Lieutenant Governor! Yes, you have to go through long meetings, but then you have the fun bonding time with your board members that you will have so much fun with.
Meetings _____________________________________
KIWANIS __________________________________
I cannot stress enough how important Kiwanis is. Kiwanis is your family, your best friend, and the most important K of the K-family. Just like your clubs should be in contact with their sponsoring Kiwanis clubs, you need to be in contact with not just your Kiwanis Lt. Governor, but the entire division! •Attend Kiwanis meetings with your KCR! Always speak at the meetings, introduce yourself, tell them about your goals, and what you have accomplished. Kiwanis is always there to help you with whatever you need •Plan a service project with Kiwanis! Connect the Ks! •If your KCR is not able to attend something you have planned and you need a chaperone, talk to your Kiwanis club! They love their Key Clubbers and are happy to help with anything you need! ALWAYS KEEP CONTACT WITH KIWANIS
Emails _________________________
Weekly Updates: Send emails to your clubs weekly about any information they may need to know. Your Governor will also be sending you weekly updates with information that could be important for your clubs to know! Inform them about divisionals, report forms, and literally any information that they would need to know! If you are active, your clubs will be active! Divisional Emails: Send separate emails for divisionals or any event you may have. As sad as it sounds, officers may not always want to read your long weekly updates, so a short simple email about a specific event will definitely catch their attention. Always reply: Always reply to emails. Even if it is just a simple email with information you need to know, reply with “got it” or “thanks!” Be professional: You want to be professional in all your emails. Use correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar. You will be seen as more professional and people will take you more seriously as Lt. Governor. YOU have to fill out paperwork too!!
