Hey Beavers! It’s almost over. The second to last newsletter of the service year is here. One more and it’s over *cries*. Enjoy reading about Leadership Training Conference, service spotlights, amazing organizations, and seeing many fun pictures from both the division and district! I hope to see you all at LTC. I guarantee it will be the best weekend of your life! Hey Division 8-a! My name is Kristen Dougherty and in the January Divisional I was elected the lieutenant governor for the upcoming service year! I am so excited to get to know the division, and work alongside you in the coming months! I will work my hardest to assist all of your clubs, and ensure this division is successful. I look forward to the challenges and triumphs to come. Hope to see you all soon!

Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting!

Hey Beavers!! My name is Diana Piktel and I am the Lieutenant Governor of Division 8-A! I have had an amazing service year with you all and I am so sad to think that my time being your Lieutenant Governor is coming to an end. Nevertheless I have full faith in Kristen and I know you all will love her! She will be an amazing Lieutenant Governor! Running for Lieutenant Governor is the best decision I have ever made. I made so many friends from this position and went one adventures that no ordinary high school student can say they have done. Making friends from attending the International Convention, Board Meetings, and simply talking in daily group chats were one of the best experiences. I can’t imagine not having all these people in my life today. I think Key Club is such a unique organization where you make so many amazing memories while making a change in the world at the same time. I encourage all of you to be much more active with Key Club because it will make your experience so much more amazing and memorable. Don’t just go to meetings and assume it’s boring. Attend walks, volunteer at 5k runs, attend LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE and I promise you will fall in love with Key Club. I mean, I know I have. If I never joined Key Club, my high school experience would be completely different and boring. KEY CLUB ROCKS! Anyways I hope you enjoy this newsletter! It’s different than all my other ones because I wanted to play around a bit a make it different. I really hope you all love it! -Diana Piktel

Hi Everyone, I am Jasmine Xiao, your 2015-2016 Division 8-A Executive Assistant! I also serve as the President of Academy of American Studies’ Key Club. As a junior, this is my third year as an active member of Key Club and I am very excited to spend it with you guys. Please feel free to contact me at anytime! More importantly, I hope to learn about the great experiences you have with Key Club at future divisional meetings and events. Yours in service and Key Club Pride Division 8-A Executive Assistant Jasmine Xiao

Every Saturday, students from the Academy of American Studies Key Club have the chance to volunteer at the HANAC Senior Center in Astoria. This past Saturday, five of our key club’s students participated in this service; four of which who come weekly. The service takes place in the George T. Douris tower and students volunteer from 11 am to 1 pm. Different tasks are given to each student; such as, preparing the meal and drinks for lunch, setting up the food tray for brunch, and help serving to the senior citizens. I myself have participated in this volunteer service earlier this month. It is a great way to give back to the community, and gain community service hours. You can also learn a few skills in the kitchen, I learned how to prepare chicken before cooking it!

The Liverpool Key Club from Division 21 created “January Pep projects throughout their school. They made a giant smiley face in the hall and posted encouraging messages in the bathrooms. This was a fun and easy way to give back to our school, and it definitely made everyone feel a little better before midterm time! I know I saw a bunch of people smile when looking and reading at these notes.Consider doing this as a quick service project at your club! -Grace Traino- D21 LTG

THE PROBLEM Almost one billion people on our planet do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. That's crazy!Every 19 seconds a child dies of water-related disease. When you fill a 5-gallon jerrycan with water, it weighs 44 pounds. The task of collecting water tends to fall on women and children between the ages of eight and 13. As a result, women are often unable to get jobs or contribute The average distance that someone in a developing community walks to fetch water is 3.75 miles. Children are often unable to go to school or get an education due to the thousands of hours they have to spend annually just hauling water.

Our mission is simple: Build a sociallyconscious generation of young people who END the global water crisis. We do this by educating students about it and activating them to rock the clean water cause & build real water projects all over the world. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, or dysentery. thirstproject.org

Watch Connor Franta’s video on it! https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=TIg0B_fcF40

When a student gains perspective on an issue as big as the global water crisis, amazing things happen! In just six years we have spoken to over 300,000 students, and STUDENTS have been the driving force in helping us raise over 8 million dollars, giving clean water to 13 different countries and over 280,000 people!

88%

The amount that disease rates can drop virtually overnight by providing safe drinking water.

KIWANIS PEDIATRIC Every day more than 39,000 children are injured seriously enough to require medical treatment, totaling more than 14 million children each year. Within a 12month period, injuries to children ages 14 and under result in 223,000 hospitalizations, nearly 8.7 million emergency room visits, and more than 12 million visits to physicians' offices. In addition, each year more than 120,000 children are permanently disabled. Ironically, the cause of severe trauma isn't always obvious, especially in children. That is what makes a Pediatric Trauma Center, with specialized equipment for children and an experienced pediatric trauma staff, so important. Children need diagnostic and treatment tools scaled to their small size, such as blood pressure cuffs, tubing, or warmers to heat blood for transfusions because their small bodies can change temperature so quickly. Children are not miniature adults. They react differently to injury and they have different symptoms of distress so they need doctors and nurses who know what to look for when diagnosing pediatric trauma. They respond differently to trauma. Understanding the differences can be critical. At least 25 percent of those children's lives could be saved and their disabilities reduced or eliminated with the establishment of a fully staffed, optimally equipped pediatric trauma center, supported by appropriately trained out patient care providers and safety programs.

TRAUMA CENTER Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Kits The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Kit is a child-sized ambulance equipment kit which was compiled to meet most on-scene emergency needs of children. The kits are donated to fire departments and ambulance services under the auspices of the local Kiwanis clubs in each community. A typical kit contains special equipment which ambulance personnel may need to properly care for a small child, as well as a stuffed animal for the child. The ingredients of these kits are child sized and geared for children from infancy to 18 years of age. Since its inceptions, over 250 kits have been donated. As you read the list that follows, if your community is not there, call your local Kiwanis Club or Fire Department. Find out why you are not include in this free, and voluntary program. http://www.kiwanispediatrictraumacenter.org/kit.pdf
