The Newspaper

First page of the Columbus Dispatch when Obama got elected for President

General impression only major columbus newspaper reliable/trusted highlights ohio events not for leisure reading- not very visually interesting and headlines are generally depressing well established targets a more mature audience has a variety of stories and sections (for many different areas of interest) well organized (hierarchy allows for easy navigation and scanability) looks important classic newspaper look and feel Tone Emphasis on local news Tone is less formal Language is more average, not too difficult to read Hold the balance between news and entertainment

1 Research 1.2 The Brand

Some branches of the Dispatch Broadcast Group

Dispatch Broadcast Group History The first issue was published on July 1, 1871. The Columbus Dispatch is the only mainstream daily newspaper in the city since The Columbus Citizen-Journal stopped printing in 1985. The Columbus Dispatch Broadcast Group is privately owned by the Wolfe family. In general the paper has a conservative slant. But more recently, coverage has taken a more leftward tilt (the Dispatch endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland in the 2006 Ohio elections). Circulation: 199,524 Daily, 334,422 Sunday Company The Dispatch Broadcast Group plays an important role for the Columbus news environment. It is represented on the web with several websites, on television and the radio and of course in from of printed magazines and papers.

1 Research 1.2 The Brand

The newspaper

Examples of the sections front pages

The Columbus Dispatch is the only local newspaper in the Columbus area, thus the emphasis lies on local news. It’s tone is less formal and it holds the balance between news and entertainment pretty well in order to address a broad audience. The Newspaper is divided into four major sections and the whole structure is pretty simple and straight forward. Also the design is simple and traditional. What is in it for you? Is the Slogan for the Columbus Dispatch and expresses that the paper caters to the many different needs of customers.

I had several ideas in how to navigate through the newspaper app. One idea was, to have all articles in the current section to be listed in a bar above. By swiping down you would be able to scroll through the article and still have the bar with all the section’s articles in view. If you swiped to the side you would get to the next section.

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) -- Troops and tanks locked down the capital of this tiny Gulf kingdom after riot police swinging clubs and firing tear gas smashed into demonstrators, many of them sleeping, in a pre-dawn assault Thursday that uproot-

ed their protest camp demanding political change. Medical officials said four people were killed. Hours after the attack on Manama’s main Pearl Square, the military announced a ban on gatherings, saying on state TV that it had “key parts” of the capital under its control. Foreign Minister Khalid Al Khalifa justified the crackdown as necessary because the demonstrators were “polarizing the country and” pushing it to the “brink of the sectarian abyss.” Speaking to reporters after meeting with his Gulf counterparts, he also said the violence was “regrettable.” After several days of holding back, the island nation’s Sunni rulers unleashed a heavy crackdown, trying to stamp out the first anti-government upheaval to reach the Arab states of the Gulf since the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. In the surprise assault, police tore down protesters’ tents, beating men and women inside and blasting some with shotgun sprays of birdshot. It was a sign of how deeply the Sunni

monarchy - and other Arab regimes in the Gulf - fear the repercussions of a prolonged wave of protests, led by members of the country’s Shiite majority but also joined by growing numbers of discontented Sunnis. Tiny Bahrain is a pillar of Washington’s military framework in the region. It hosts the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, a critical counterbalance to Iran. Bahrain’s rulers and their Arab allies depict any sign of unrest among their Shiite populations as a move by neighboring Shiite-majority Iran to expand its clout in the region. But the assault may only further enrage protesters, who before the attack had called for large rallies Friday. In the wake of the bloodshed, angry demonstrators chanted “the regime must go,” and burned pictures of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa outside the emergency ward at Salmaniya Medical Complex, the main hospital. “We are even angrier now. They think they can clamp down on us, but they have made us angrier,” Makki Abu Taki, whose son was killed in the assault, shouted in the hospital morgue. “We will take to the WIDGETS MAIN MENU OPTIONS TOOLS BACK

The spacious Statehouse atrium was packed mostly with public union workers outraged at efforts to end collective bargaining for state workers and significantly weaken the ability for local workers to bargain for their pay, benefits and working conditions. Unions made a strong showing for the bill’s first two hearings, and they were joined today by more than 200 red-shirt clad tea party activists pushing for the bill’s passage. The mix verbally clashed in the Statehouse rotunda, where each side did its best to drown out the other. Meanwhile, the atrium had the feel of a rock concert or an Ohio State football Supporters of Senate Bill 5 rallied outside the Statehouse game, as union supporters cheered loudly when Senate sergeants-at-arms led their By Jim Siegel leaders across the balcony and into the THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH hearing room. shut down Thursday. For the first time in the crisis, tanks rolled into the streets and military checkpoints were set up as army patrols circulated. The Interior Ministry warned Bahrainis to stay off the streets. Banks and other key institutions did not open, and workers stayed home, unable or to afraid to pass through checkpoints to get to their jobs. Barbed wire and police cars with flashing blue lights encircled Pearl Square, the site of anti-government rallies since Monday. The square was turned into a field of flattened tents and the strewn belongings of the protesters who had camped there pieces of clothing and boxes of food. Banners lay trampled on the ground, littered with broken glass, tear gas canisters and debris. A body covered in a white sheet lay in a pool of blood on the side of a road nearby. Demonstrators had been camping out for days around the landmark square’s 300-foot (90-meter) monument featuring a giant pearl, a testament to the island’s pearl-diving past.

The protesters’ demands have two main objectives: force the ruling Sunni monarchy to give up its control over top government posts and all critical decisions, and address deep grievances held by the country’s majority Shiites who make up 70 percent of Bahrain’s 500,000 citizens but claim they face systematic discrimination and poverty and are effectively blocked from key roles in public service and the military. Shiites have clashed with police before in protests over their complaints. But the growing numbers of Sunnis joining the latest protests have come as a surprise to authorities, said Simon Henderson, a Gulf specialist at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “The Sunnis seem to increasingly dislike what is a very paternalistic government,” he said, adding that the crackdown was “symptomatic” of Gulf nations’ response to crises. “As far as the Gulf rulers are concerned there’s only one proper way with this and that is: be tough and be tough early.” The assault came early Thursday with WIDGETS MAIN MENU OPTIONS TOOLS BACK

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) -- Troops and tanks locked down the capital of this tiny Gulf kingdom after riot police swinging clubs and firing tear gas smashed into demonstrators, many of them sleeping, in a pre-dawn assault Thursday that uprooted their protest camp demanding political change. Medical officials said four people were killed. Hours after the attack on Manama’s main Pearl Square, the military announced a ban on gatherings, saying on state TV that it had “key parts” of the capital under its control. Foreign Minister Khalid Al Khalifa justified the crackdown as necessary because the demonstrators were “polarizing the country and” pushing it to the “brink of the sectarian abyss.” Speaking to reporters after meeting with his Gulf counterparts, he also said the violence was “regrettable.” After several days of holding back, the

island nation’s Sunni rulers unleashed a heavy crackdown, trying to stamp out the first anti-government upheaval to reach the Arab states of the Gulf since the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. In the surprise assault, police tore down protesters’ tents, beating men and women inside and blasting some with shotgun sprays of birdshot. It was a sign of how deeply the Sunni monarchy - and other Arab regimes in the Gulf - fear the repercussions of a prolonged wave of protests, led by members of the country’s Shiite majority but also joined by growing numbers of discontented Sunnis. In the wake of the bloodshed, angry demonstrators chanted “the regime must go,” and burned pictures of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa outside the emergency ward

Gerry DiNardo was sweating. It was well into the summer, and the LSU football coach had too many players. He had signed more than the NCAAallowed 25 recruits that year, and he had 26 on the roster as Aug. 1 approached the deadline to be down to 25. “I had signed a player whose dad had played at LSU,” DiNardo said. “I was going to go to him and say, ‘Look, I screwed up, it’s my fault. We can have your son enroll in January or can you pay for one semester?’ I was really nervous.” Fortunately for DiNardo - and the player - it never came to that. It usually does work out, sometimes mysteriously, in the Southeastern Conference, where oversigning - signing more players than a team can fit - is not only allowable, it’s expected. It’s different for Ohio State and the Big Ten. Some say the conference’s restrictive rules on oversigning put it at a dis-

advantage, including DiNardo, a former coach in both leagues. Even though the practice has been going on for decades, the discrepancy only recently has begun to attract national attention - and indignation. “At LSU, I could do whatever I wanted,” said DiNardo, now an analyst for the Big Ten Network. “The athletic director trusted me. If I signed 30, he knew I would be at 25 when I had to be. There was always a way to manage to numbers.” Then in 2002, when DiNardo was hired by Indiana, he was in for a shock. The Big Ten had the most restrictive rules against oversigning of all the major conferences. The NCAA allows 85 scholarship players. DiNardo found that he could sign only the number of players that would bring him to 85. Not only that - he could offer only 20 scholarships. What that meant was that if any of the 20 players he offered went elsewhere, he was short of 85 that season. “The Big Ten puts itself at a competitive disadvantage,” DiNardo said. “You would never be at 85. When I got to Indiana, the numbers were awful. We had 50-some players on scholarships. My only chance to catch up was to oversign.” WIDGETS GALLERY OPTIONS TOOLS BACK
