RELOCATING DURING A PANDEMIC T

he ongoing Pandemic has caused many companies to reevaluate their office space and in-person workforce. Employees that were tied to a 1-2 hour commute to the office have discovered the comforts of working from home. Some companies across the country have made decisions to close up the office and have made working-from-home permanent. This had led employees across the nation to question the price they have been paying to live in high density, high tax urban cities. Cost of Living The high quality of life and low cost of living in Charlotte in addition to our temperate climate has drawn families from across the nation and in particular from New York, New Jersey, California, Chicago and Boston to relocate to the Queen City. From NY to CLT We recently helped a family move from the suburbs outside NYC to Charlotte. They explained that their daily commute into and out of Manhattan, consisting of a challenging combination of cars, trains, and subways, was not much

different from a round trip flight from CLT to NYC. They were able to raise their family in an ideal location in Charlotte with a much lower cost of living. Moving Closer To Family We have always helped grandparents move closer to grown children once they are ready to “right-size”, but 2020 saw even more family moving closer to each other. If there is one thing this pandemic has taught us, it is to treasure those moments you have with family and make the most of each day. Is It The Right Time? There are many factors to consider when deciding to move to a new city. Our Director of Relocation Catharine Pappas has 25+ years experience moving people all around the world! Give her a call today at 704.661.2402 and she can answer all your questions. Words by Catharine Pappas

WITH GOOD SOLAR,

ETHAN BLUMENTHAL MERGES RENEWABLE ENERGY & PHILANTHROPY By: Lauren Corriher Ethan Blumenthal has a big vision for North Carolina’s renewable energy industry. If you find yourself wondering if that last name sounds familiar, Blumenthal’s family has been a major force in Charlotte philanthropy for generations. If you’ve enjoyed a show at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Uptown, you know the name well. Now twenty-eight-year-old Blumenthal is on his way to becoming a philanthropist in his own right. After graduating from law school at UNC Chapel Hill, Blumenthal opted to blend his understanding of the legal field with a passion for renewable energy and a desire to give back. In 2018, Blumenthal and Miles Wobbleton founded Good Solar. Good Solar is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that aims to create energy solutions for other nonprofit organizations, as well as low and moderateincome communities. Good Solar has important goals: to fight climate change, shed light on social justice issues, and provide community economic development and resiliency.

Here are some must-know points about Blumenthal and Good Solar, plus what the organization means for the Queen City.

Q: What exactly is Good Solar? A: We seek to pursue four separate charitable goals. There’s the climate change aspect, the social justice aspect, community resiliency, and economic development. The goal is to get people who would not otherwise be able to participate in a renewable energy program, for any number of structural or societal reasons, access to renewable energy. As we’re building out our projects, we plan to hold a minimum of five percent of the overall output of the projects specifically for low and moderate-income households. We’re seeking to subsidize their participation and defray the upfront costs for people in these areas.

I think you’re going to see a lot of change in how people talk about the renewable energy movement. It’s not just that we’re building these systems, it’s how we’re building them, which is why Good Solar exists.

Q: What inspired you to create Good Solar? A: It became clear to me that for all renewable energy’s great aspects, the way it’s currently being developed in the United States is widening the economic and racial divides that are prolific throughout our society, versus helping us bridge those gaps.

- Ethan Blumenthal

Q: Not many people complete a law degree and immediately start a non-profit. What made you want to pursue this path?

Q: How do you expect the renewable energy movement to change in the coming years?

A: I’ve been around non-profits my whole life, so that’s a factor. But ultimately, what it boils down to is we’re trying to do work in these communities that have every single right to be suspicious of someone saying, “Let me help you.” Because there’s been a lot of times people have said that, and it hasn’t always worked out well for these communities. Taking away the profit motive seemed to be an important aspect of the frontward face of what we’re trying to do.

A: I think you’re going to see a lot of change in how people talk about the renewable energy movement. It’s not just that we’re building these systems, it’s how we’re building them, which is why Good Solar exists. For example, there’s this Green Bank idea that’s being put forward. Connecticut and New York already have Green Bank systems, but you could see the introduction of a national system. It would have a multitude of different lending programs, some of them aimed towards low and moderate-income areas.

Q: Why did you choose Charlotte as the headquarters for Good Solar? A: Charlotte has what I call the “Field of Dreams” version of development. If you build it, they will come. We’re sitting in the second biggest financial hub in the country. We’re the number two solar installed state in the country. And we have a very robust non-profit network. It’s the nexus of the finance, solar, and non-profit industries. Q: Can you share details about what you’ve got in the works? A: We’re currently in talks with a non-profit called Benevolence Farm in Graham, North Carolina. They house formerly incarcerated women and help them develop important life skills. They have an organic farm and also make lotions and salves that they sell to help support the cause. They have a chunk of land on their property that they think could potentially house a small community solar field. We’re also talking with a university about larger projects that our solution would be a part of. (704) 661-2402

Q: If someone is new to this field and looking to learn more, what resources might you suggest? A: North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association is a good one, as is Sierra Club, the Southern Environmental Law Center, and Vote Solar. Q: If someone reads this piece and is interested in Good Solar, how can they get involved? A: Feel free to e-mail me at Ethan@GoodSolarUSA.org. If someone loves the mission and wants to support it, we accept charitable donations, too.

THE

A FOUNDATION TO END HOMELESSNESS.

S

ome might say starting a new foundation during a pandemic is risky, but to Vicky Mitchener it was the perfect time to start. The Homeowners Impact Fund was introduced to the agents at Dickens Mitchener in January of 2020 at the annual agent awards banquet. Little did we all know just how more important this non- profit would become as the pandemic put more people on the streets than ever before. The fund was created to help our homeless neighbors off the streets and into affordable housing. The premise is this: each person involved in a real estate transaction gives a minimum of $10 at closing. This could raise $2.4 million dollars per year in the Charlotte region alone. The fund launched in July 2020 with the help of Wells Fargo and other partners. The first two payouts totaling $52,500 were made in October and December 2020 to local organizations chosen because of their work with our neighbors in the community who cannot afford stable housing. Alliance were the recipients of all donations in 2020. We received this encouraging note from A Roof Above detailing how donations help our local neighbors. “Through your gift, you are transforming lives of neighbors like Nate. Facing homelessness during a pandemic, Nate kept pushing towards his goals. He used the stability provided by our emergency shelter as an opportunity to pursue a new career in HVAC maintenance. Overcoming challenge after challenge, his hard work and determination paid off. Not only did he pass his vocational tests and move into his own home during a pandemic, he also finally passed his drivers license test! If you saw Nate today, he would be beaming with pride.” It is stories like these that keep us spreading the word about this wonderful opportunity to give back to those in need. Especially now, during a pandemic.

DESIGNER TRENDS

MADE BY KIPPEN You have experimented with many concrete products, what is your favorite item to make?

photo by Wyeth Augustine For more than 17 years, Kippen Priest has been hard at work as the contract coordinator and bookkeeper at Dickens Mitchener. However, when she is not in the office, she has turned a quest into finding a scent she has loved for over 25 years, into a booming business. Kippen grew up in the Charlotte area and attended Appalachian State University. She picked up an oil in California on a vacation in her teens and loved the scent so much she had been ordering it from the shop ever since. But, in 2017, the shop owner let her know they were going out of business. Kippen decided she would mix her oils to try to replicate the scent. This led her to making candles, and as they say, the rest is history. We sat down with Kippen to find out more about Made By Kippen.

How did your business get started? I wasn’t actually looking to start a business when I first started making candles. I taught myself how to make them after trying to find an oil that I had worn as a perfume for years. When I first started, I was making them in glass containers and just wanted to find something a little more unique which is how the concrete concept was started. After a lot of trial and error, and posting one picture of the finished product on social media, Made by Kippen was created. If you are interested in any of her products or to discover more about Made By Kippen, visit her website at madebykippen.com, or follow her journey on Instagram @madebykippen.

I love making all of the home decor products, but I definitely love making candles the most since that was my passion for starting this business in the first place.

How has your business evolved since you started? What started as just one shaped candle, has since evolved into a variety of shapes, colors, and branched into more home décor pieces such as trays, planters, vases and even necklaces!

What has been the best part of owning your own business? I love being a small business owner and take a lot of pride in each of the products I create. I also love getting to meet so many other makers in the Charlotte community who have become really good friends which I never would have met if not having started this adventure.

DM Celebrates 30 Years In Business!

In 1991

, our founder Vicky Mitchener set out to create a real estate agency unlike any other in the Charlotte region. Already a highly successful agent, she wanted to create an agency that would simplify the entire transaction process, while simultaneously providing clients with the ultimate real estate buying or selling experience. What started as a small team of agents has turned into 115+ agents, 2 offices, and a 10 person staff. The company has been through it all in the last 30 years. The housing crisis in 2009 slimmed down the office, but with the leadership of Vicky Mitchener we made it through. Today, we are proud to celebrate with you some milestones in our recent history. •

• •

The company had a record-setting year despite the pandemic with over $800 million in sales. This crushed our previous record of $750 million in 2019. Our roster has 110+ agents keeping our agency in the boutique category. Our relocation department continues to be a top award winner every year with Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. In 2019 we received the following awards: Diamond Award, the Crown of Excellence for Outgoing Referral Production, Outgoing Sales Production, Equivalent Outgoing Sales Production, and was also recognized for our company marketing. The agents at DM are an integral part of the community, volunteering and giving monetary donations to over 100 organizations in our area alone.

We are excited to be able to celebrate our achievements in the Fall of 2021. For now, enjoy a look back at Dickens Mitchener through the years.

Tree-lined streets are the centerpiece to this bustling neighborhood noted on the National Register of Historic Places. Choose to live in anything from a charming bungalow to a Queen Anne-style home in this neighborhood where walking to your favorite spot is easy. Welcome to Dilworth. While many of Charlotte’s neighborhoods were built over the last few decades, Dilworth is the exception to the rule. The old streetcar suburb dates back to the late 1800s, and residents work hard to preserve that history which just adds character to the homes, businesses, and streets of today. The neighborhood is truly unlike anything else in the city. Located just south of Uptown, residents can walk to attractions and businesses. They can also walk to an assortment of locally owned shops, wine bars, coffee shops, and restaurants on a crisp Carolina afternoon. Dilworth is an attractive neighborhood for a multitude of reasons. Some of the best schools in the state are located here. One of the city’s most popular parks with ball fields, playgrounds, and picnic areas is also located within its boundaries. The neighborhood is known for its low crime rates, as well as its friendly residents. On any given evening, you will see neighbors out walking their dogs, sitting on their big front porches, or taking an evening stroll to a local eatery, and they will always wave hello or stop to chat. Dilworth is known for its active homeowner’s association, the Dilworth Community Association. The non-profit, all volunteer organization arranges playgroups, has men’s and women’s groups, maintains a neighborhood network, and does so much more for the community on a daily basis.

Drive down Queens Road West into the historic neighborhood known for its impressive homes, winding roads, and 100-year-old oak trees to find Colonial and Tudor revival homes, ample shopping, and award-winning restaurants. Welcome to Myers Park. Located just south of Uptown and minutes from major interstates, Myers Park residents have all of Charlotte at their fingertips. People here fall in love with the neighborhood’s picturesque charm the moment they visit. Parks, schools, churches, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance of many of the residences. Queens University is also located in the neighborhood and adds to the charm of the area. The schools in Myers Park are also a reason why people choose to live here. They are considered to be some of the best in Charlotte, and Myers Park High even ranks #42 in North Carolina for high schools. Freedom Park is also a major attraction for families who gather there on weekends for soccer and baseball games and picnics. Single professionals who live in the area love to stroll around the lake and get away from the hustle and bustle of work. However, when Monday rolls around, some of the country’s top businesses are located just a few miles away from the community, which means a quick commute and more time spent enjoying your beautiful Myers Park home.

South of Uptown Charlotte you will find Charlotte’s first suburb where the homes were built on rolling hills and large shaded lots. Friendly neighbors, great schools, and the beautiful scenery are just some of the highlights of this community. Welcome to Eastover. The historic neighborhood has always attracted Charlotte’s leaders who wanted a close commute to the city but feel miles away in the tranquility of the neighborhood. The residential community features beautiful historic homes and some of the friendliest neighbors you will find in North Carolina. Eastover dates back to 1927, and it has watched generations of its original families grow up, prosper, and raise their own families within the community. However, these old familiar faces gladly welcome newcomers with open arms. This is just one reason why Eastover is one of the most sought-after places to live in all of Charlotte and its metropolitan area. Other reasons include proximity to great schools, beautiful parks, and local churches. Small local shops and restaurants are practically within walking distances, and the business and entertainment opportunities in Uptown Charlotte are just minutes away. As for architecture, you will not find more beautiful homes anywhere else in the city. From Georgian to Tudor styles, the sprawling estates and large bungalows sit on large, shady lots among the community’s lush greenery, mature oak trees, and babbling creeks.

Nestled in the SouthPark area of Charlotte along Providence Road you will find this family-friendly neighborhood. Luxury homes, exclusive shopping, and award-winning dining are just a few attractions in this suburb of Charlotte. Welcome to Foxcroft. The Foxcroft neighborhood was first developed as an upscale residential subdivision in the 1940’s in the area that was a former dairy farm owned by the Harris family. Many of the original homes have been updated while retaining their original stately charm. Some owners have chosen to rebuild homes on existing lots or retrofit the home with modern conveniences. SouthPark mall was built along the western edge of Foxcroft in 1970, bringing with it a surge of popularity as an alternative to driving uptown for shopping. Today, the SouthPark area not only hosts the largest shopping district in Charlotte, but also a bustling business and residential community. The Foxcroft Homeowners Association continues to preserve the neighborhood’s tradition as a quiet family neighborhood. There are many choices nearby for a fun night out. Visit SouthPark right next door, travel a few miles to Uptown, or visit the bustling SouthEnd area of Charlotte. Foxcroft is also close to the many major event venues for concerts and sports. There is truly something for everyone within minutes of the neighborhood. Foxcroft consists mainly of larger single-family homes, ranging from historic classic Georgian and French Provincial styles to modern new construction.

The Elizabeth neighborhood may be one of the city’s smallest neighborhoods, but it exudes historic charm with its turn-of-the-century bungalow homes, quaint shops and restaurants. People are drawn to the neighborhood for its walkability and location in the Queen City. Welcome to Elizabeth. Located just south of Uptown - so close you can actually walk there - the treelined streets of the area make it one of Charlotte’s hidden gems. The homes as well as the businesses are located along some of the most walkable streets in the city making it easy to grab a cup of coffee or check out one of the trendy locally-owned shops. The short commute to Uptown Charlotte also make this area a desirable place to live. Some of the city’s top employers, such as Novant Health, Atrium Health, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America are just minutes away, which means more time hanging out with friends and family and less time in a car or public transportation. This also means quick, easy access to some of Charlotte’s most popular entertainment venues, museums, and sports arenas. The community itself is home to hospitals, parks, and two colleges making it an area that offers something for everyone.

Family-friendly country club living can be found in this beautiful neighborhood in South Charlotte. Take a drive down these streets and you will notice the homes are all unique. They sit on inviting half-acre lots, and the amenities and green spaces are endless. Welcome to Providence Country Club. The neighborhood was developed between 1989-2000. The vision was for an active family lifestyle including golf, swim, and tennis in the community with the construction of the club. This vision has come to life and there are always neighbors out walking, running, or driving their golf carts to and from the club every day of the year. Located between Providence and Ardrey Kell Roads in South Charlotte, the neighborhood features all of the world-class amenities you would expect from a top country club in a major city, while also creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for residents looking for a place to call home. It is a wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but still minutes away from shopping, dining, parks and greenway spaces. Providence Country Club may be a little further away from Uptown Charlotte than other neighborhoods, but I-485 is so close that you can be uptown in a flash. Award-winning restaurants, wine shops, local boutiques and beautiful parks are all also minutes away. The country club itself provides daily activities for members. Professional sports, museums, and cultural events are just a short drive from the neighborhood.

Ballantyne Country Club may not be as historic as some of the other clubs in Charlotte, but it is definitely just as popular. The exclusive club’s course was designed by design legend Rees Jones, and the club itself offers numerous amenities and regular events and activities for the whole family. The homes surrounding the club are spacious and elegant, and they come with all the modern conveniences residents have come to expect from any Ballantyne neighborhood. Ballantyne Country Club is just a couple of miles from major interstates, about 20 miles south of Uptown, and minutes from Charlotte’s top shopping and dining destinations. Students living in the club have access to some of the city’s best private and public schools. Best of all, Ballantyne Country Club is a tight-knit community where neighbors get to know each other and make friends that will last a lifetime. The land where it is located was once used for hunting land. But now, the Ballantyne community is a popular shopping and dining destination, and it is just minutes from South Charlotte’s selection of parks, retail outlets, restaurants, and attractions. For even more fun and entertainment, the country club is less than two miles from Interstate 485, which means residents can be anywhere in the Charlotte area at a moment’s notice to take advantage of all the city’s exciting recreational opportunities.

Our Experts in the Charlotte Lifestyle Style Team Member's favorite spots in the Queen City

ALL GOOD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD “Right now my favorite area of Charlotte is the Design District in Southend. With Atherton, The Design Center buildings, the new Lowe’s tower and the redevelopment projects on Tremont and Hawkins, it has become such a vibrant place to walk around, shop and have a bite to eat. You see people walking their dogs, walking the rail trail, socializing, on scooters and riding the light rail around the area. I am happy to see that developers are taking a section of Charlotte and revitalizing it. It has added character to Charlotte and is very accessible from I-77 and other parts of the city. Currently my favorite restaurant in town is Barcelona in the design center. You can find just about any type of food you want in that area. I am also excited about the Gold District which is very close to the Design District between that area and uptown. Those warehouse spaces are becoming shops, restaurants and breweries. It is so amazing to see all that has and will be happening in that area of Charlotte.”

“I like Freedom Park for several reasons. A) It’s a great park offering lots of activities from walking/running to having a picnic, playing on the playgrounds for kids, and even little league and soccer games on the weekends in the warm months. B) I like how it connects with the trail, so you can loop around the pond, and then pick up the trail and walk along the creek past the hospital and to the Metropolitan and Target. I used to park at Target and walk to Freedom Park, loop the pond and come back, that’s a really nice 4-5 miles. C) The location in general, and walkabil- SUSAN HOOVER, ity to restaurants (including one of my REALTOR®/BROKER faves, Bad Daddy’s) and shops. There’s always people walking along East Blvd anytime you drive by, so it gives you that “big city” feel without having GET OUT & GET ACTIVE to get in your car and drive to every destination. Location also being in the “The Whitewater Center has been middle of Myers Park and connecting somewhere I always recommend to Dilworth gives you an idyllic scenery to out-of-towners to experience if to walk through and look at homes.” they have the time. There is always something to do there for people of - ASHLEE DURRANCE, all ages and it’s consistently updating REALTOR®/BROKER - JEFF MURDOCK, and changing; which keeps it fresh. REALTOR®/BROKER My favorite thing to do there is go to the River Jam Summer Concert Series A PLACE TO LET THE DOGS OUT during the summertime.” “My favorite part of Charlotte right now is Club Colony a.k.a Myers Park. You can walk to great restaurants like Osteria LuCa, Mellow Mushroom, Flour Shop and Cava. There is a neighborhood “watering hole”, Selwyn Pub. You can pick up fresh meats and fish as needed at Clean Catch and Reid’s. The booty loop and greenway is nearby for exercise and several churches are all within walking distance. You can also enjoy the festive Hillside holiday lights and Picardy string lights nearby!”

- MAGGIE MINICK, “Skiptown! A fun spot for you and REALTOR®/BROKER

your pup. Watch your furry friend run around and play in their large open space while you relax, socialize and maybe enjoy a cold one from their great selections.”

Our Experts in the Charlotte Lifestyle Style Team Member's favorite spots in the Queen City

SPEND YOUR DAYS ON THE GREENWAY “My family and I love to utilize the greenway when we want to be active together. More specifically, we have really been enjoying the section between Tyvola Road and Pineville because it’s a little less populated with more room to space out. I highly recommend biking it first so you can experience the entirety of this section. There is a parking lot right off Tyvola. Cheers to Charlotte for investing in green spaces and our health!”

- MAI-LIS BAHR,

REALTOR®/BROKER

“My favorite spot in Charlotte is anywhere on the miles and miles of greenways. I live in a neighborhood in South Charlotte built in the 80s and I’m so blessed to have direct Greenway access inside the neighborhood. Any day that I’m not working, I’m out on the Greenway on my old beach cruiser or just taking a walk in the crisp spring air. It’s glorious!”

- JENNIFER LEE, REALTOR®/BROKER

“My favorite spot in Charlotte is the newly expanded greenway system. It allows for lots of activities - walking, jogging, dog walking and biking. It is awesome!”

- RUTH MONIZ,

REALTOR®/BROKER

“I love the walkability of Charlotte. Especially during this ‘working from home time.’ I appreciate being able to walk through neighborhoods or access the Greenway or the Rail Trail. We’ve been so lucky with the temperate weather, which has enabled walking outdoors all year long!”

- ASHLEY MCMILLAN, REALTOR®/BROKER

“Charlotte is a Running City - Our entire family runs which is one of the many reasons I love calling Charlotte home. The variety of trails, parks and greenways is so vast you could never get tired of them. My favorite trail is Anne Springs Close hands down, although McAlpine Greenway is a close second with so many memories from family runs to the annual Strides for Shelter 5K!”

GRAB A BITE OR TWO “As someone who has Celiac’s disease, I recommend Burtons Grill. They do the best job handling food allergies. If you have an allergy, your food comes out on a different shaped plate, which means that it was given special treatment in the kitchen. What a simple gesture that means a lot to people like me. But aside from that, we like the atmosphere, the food is great, and the rest of my family (who are NOT gluten free) also love it – so it’s a winwin for everyone. We like their patio space, and it has 2 locations, one in Cotswold and one in Blakeney.”

- SHELLY RYDELL, REALTOR®/BROKER

“I love sushi and Southend has 5 fantastic Sushi spots within approx. 1 mile of each other: YUME Ramen & Sushi Bar, Yamazaru Sushi & Sake, O-Ku, Hawkers Asian Street Food, and finally, Blacow – Southend (most recently opened). Plenty of options for eclectic Asian cuisine and fresh sushi!”
