Malay Artifacts Ar ts and crafts always associate in life in the past. People produce tools or some wares to help make life easier, and adorn it with fine and intricate ar ts. That adornment gave characters to the tool and distinguishes Malay ar tifacts from others. It tells a lot of stor y from the usage, the owner and also the place it came from. For the Malay people, the expression on their ar t and crafts are always associated with their principle in life, largely influenced by the Islamic teaching and Malay custom. This sor t of expression can be recognized by the use of floral and vegetal motif, sometimes associated with calligraphy in Jawi script and ver y seldomly with stylized animal or representation of animistic creatures. Generally, the for tunate and wealthy people might be able to afford pricey metal like silver and gold, where normal pheasant may just afford brass and some just use abundantly available natural sources like wood and bamboos. Regardless the material used, their artisan showcases remarkably very fine and intricate ornamentation. A keris for example, was forged in blazing fire, combining few good metal to produce a fine functional blade. But the sheath and hilt of the keris is the first thing people see to note the owner. Some keris would use wooden hilt, a buffalo horn, an ivor y, a black coral or even a whale’s teeth. The rarest material used or the most embellished one is an expression of the owner’s wealth and power. Embarking towards the 20th century, traditional arts and crafts are slowly forgotten, and effor ts by many show significant results. In the tur n of 20th centur y, silvercr afts in the state of Kelantan rose again, with some was able to debut internationally by producing European-styled wares with hint of local ar t taste, like the rose bowl, ashtray, tablewares and candelabras. Traditionally, these wares are estranged to the local, but were specially crafted for British officers and expatriates so they can bring something back home as souvenir s. Interestingly, the local ar tisan uses traditional inspired motifs like the daun tapak leman (Elephantophus scraber leaves), bunga kenanga (Cananga odorata flowers) and bunga cengkih (clove) to embellish the wares they produce. The craft produced during that era is marked with Kelantan in Jawi script. This mark was once misunderstood by the silver collectors as mark from middle-east countr y, as the Jawi script is using Arabic letter s.

Ismail Mat Hussin Ismail Mat Hussin’s batik combines warm tones and ear thy hues from a restricted palette of colors to depict ever yday rural scenes with lively good humor. Batik ar t has ascended from a humble and practical worn piece of cloth and alleviated to fine ar t today and Ismail Mat Hussin is one of the ver y finest in this ar t. Ismail Mat Hussin paintings collected by individuals and national institutions such as the National Visual Ar ts Galler y, Malaysia Airline System, National Museum, Esso Malaysia, Bank Negara, Petronas Galler y and others.
