‘Gelai tutup’ was one of the decorative items that young nyonyas, particularly those from Penang, made for the wedding chamber during the 12-day Peranakan wedding. The tradition of ‘gelai tutup ‘was derived from the British during the colonial period in Malaya. Bell jar cloches were used in Victorian England to protect delicate blooms and plants from excessive temperature fluctuations, rain, wind and pests. This then grew into a tradition of bringing the great outdoors in the home. Stuffed birds, porcelain dolls, flowers and, later, faux blooms were worked and encased into bell jar cloches. Most Victorian bell jar cloches were made of hand-blown glass.

JAPANESE KAKIEMON FOUR- TIER PORCELAIN TENGKAT Dimension: Handle: L 15 x H 15 in. Tengkat: D 6.3 x H 9 in. MYR 8,000 - 10,000 USD 1,960 - 2,450 Kakiemon (Japanese: 柿右衛門) is a style of Japanese porcelain, with overglaze decoration called “enameled” ceramics. The style shares much in common with the Chinese “Famille Verte” style. The quality of its decoration was highly prized in the West and widely imitated by major European porcelain manufacturers during the Baroque era. Kakiemon is a term that generates some confusion, being the name of a family, one or more kilns, and a brightly-coloured overglaze style broadly imitating Chinese wares. The style originated with the family, whose kilns were the main producers of it, but other kilns also made it, and the Kakiemon kilns made other styles.

Yap Chin Hoe has been a full time artist since he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Arts in 1991. He has finessed a refreshing contemporary interpretation of classical Western still- life - the Oriental antique- wares bring grace and poise to an otherwise traditional theme. Intricate details - the fluttery of dragonfly wings, phoenix flapping its wings, soft tendrils of foliage, graceful translucent drapes - and a more vivid palette have infused his recent artwork with new vitality. His delicate brushstrokes reveal a meticulous quest to capture the ethereal quality of the antique porcelain, while brilliantly coloured Nyonya and batik fabric serve as a counterpoint to the austerity of the blue and white china. The image of raucous Peranakan revelry comes to mind when flamboyant tapestries are paired with equally dramatic wares.

With a combination of stone, metal, wood and other materials, I created statues of olden-day warriors with a spirit of fighting in the battlefield. - Mat Ali Mat Som

CHUAH THEAN TENG, DATO (b. China, 1914 - d. 2008) Flag Festival “Chingay” Batik: 89 x 58 cm Signed, lower left: Theng MYR 28,000 - 40,000 USD 6,280 - 9,780 Chingay Festival is an interesting batik featuring a yearly festival in Penang as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations and also during the birthdays of Chinese deities from Taoism. Since the early 20th century, Penang became famous for its “Giant Flags Procession”. Flag bearers carry and balance giant flag poles (some 12-meter high) on their shoulders, chins and foreheads then tossing them to the next bearer. Each bearer manoeuvres the flag in acrobatic gestures with agility in attempt to balance a huge flag pole. Each flag would weigh between 50 – 80 pounds which requires great strength for physical co-ordination and reflexes. Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng is widely recognized as the Father of Batik Painting in Malaysia. He first experimented with batik painting in 1953 and achieved international recognition after his successful solo exhibition in the Commonwealth Institute, London in 1959. Chuah’s international recognition was further cast when two of his paintings, Two of A Kind (1968) and Tell You A Secret (1987), were selected as UNICEF’S greeting cards. In 1977, Teng was the only Malaysian invited to the Commonwealth Artists of Fame Exhibition in London. He was studied in the Amoy Academy of Arts, Fujian in 1932 and has since had solo exhibitions in Pomeroy Galleries, San Francisco, California, USA (1964), Stichting Twents-Gelders Textielmuseum, Enschede, Holland (1967), Churchill Art Gallery, Perth, Australia (1977) to name a few. He was recognised by the state for his contributions to art field when he was bestowed the title of “Dato’” by the Penang state government and in 2005 he was honoured with the Penang Heritage Trust’s Living Heritage Award. 84

These colours became a metaphor in a dim and dull life, due to human greediness in exploring the environment. His interaction with his colours succeeds in creating spatial and composition variances. Fauzulyusri continue to explore aesthetic effect possibilities in this series. Teroka series is till being created in 2016, with no definite time and completion. 86

He has joined several group exhibitions and lately in September 2018 he joined Art Asia Expo in Kuala Lumpur, at the Palace of The Golden Horses. Ng Hon Loong’s luscious painting style reflects his strong character. His artworks show a deep understanding of the difficulties surrounding an individual in the midst of personal and universal problems and challenges. The artist expresses surrealism and symbolism in his paintings with contrasting and sharp colours, his compositions livened up with symbolism that reflects the artist’s desire to express his inner feelings and world view, which is also presented in this artwork. In his 1987 “October Series, #10”, Ng Hon Loong is profoundly symbolizing Operasi Lalang that potentially threatened peace and stability in modern Malaysia. By painting internationally recognized peace symbol and the Yin Yang symbol for balance and covering with white clouds, Ng sends us the message that in October 1987, peace, stability and social balance were facing problems in many places, and particularly in Malaysia.

Raduan Man laboriously incorporates both art disciplines for his works by intricately carving out wood blocks and transposing the images on to canvas. The use of canvas as oppose to paper gives Raduan a sturdier material to work with, enabling him the room for experimentation to form the artistic statement which has shaped him today. Layers of blocks are imprinted, with each block contributing its unique characteristic which gives depth and complexities to Raduan’s work. Raduan has participated in over 30 group exhibitions and has held 7 solo exhibitions including Fresh Markings, NN Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2003), Beyond Print – Raduan Man, Gallery Chandran, Kuala Lumpur (2009), and Living Metals, Purple Houz Fine Arts, Petaling Jaya (2012). AWANG DAMIT AHMAD (b. Sabah, 1956) Payarama Baru “Ilham Dari Shanghai“, 2015 Mixed media on canvas: 122 x 122 cm Signed, titled and dated on the reverse MYR 55,000 - 65,000 USD 13,440 - 15,890 The unique abstract expressionistic brushwork visible in Payarama Baru has placed Awang Damit Ahmad at the forefront of our Malaysia’s contemporary art scene today. The present lot is the artist’s fifth stylistic phase known as “Payarama Baru”, which reflects upon the interconnection between nature and man. This series speaks about the life of a farmer, which is vulnerable to and dependent on the whims of the weather. This work expresses a profoundly spiritual quality that is deeply rooted in his oeuvre. The premeditated use of colours is suggestive of his sensitivity to the varying hues and their associated meanings. Viewing the painting from a distance shows an intuitive and intellectual division of space on the canvas, where the disparate elements suspend in an optimal stasis. According to Professor Dr. Muliyadi Mahamood, “Awang draws his inspiration from his childhood as the son of a fisherman, as well as from his environment full of green luxurious plants. Around him, he saw neighbours planting and working in their gardens; building houses and buildings; fixing roads full of potholes and mud. Awang tried to understand all the human activities around him, and he compared and contrasted them with his artistic activities. “The process of producing an artwork is similar to gardening, for my artwork, I have the canvas, whereas in my gardening I work with soil. It is easy for me to relate gardening as similar process to creating artwork as it is a daily experience with the element of aesthetics” – Awang Damit 100

Chen Wen Hsi is renowned for his skills in depicting animals, of which it is the gibbons that he is most associated with. Since Song Dynasty, Gibbons were seen to be noble, unlike the macaques- who often disrupted and stole from humans. In contrast, gibbons were often described as the ‘gentlemen of the forests’, with their human-like characteristics they were believed to be animals, which would one day evolve into humans. This self-titled work Gibbons showcases bold, solid figures add weight and vigor to the gibbons, bringing a feeling of gravity to the work, and intensifying the energy of the animal’s motion. His painting on the subject demonstrates his impressive skill in portraying movement set within a naturalistic scene. The artist kept six gibbons as pets in his home, and studied the physique and character of the animals often in close range for long periods of time. It is Chen Wen Hsi’s mastery of the gibbons that led it to be commemorated on the 50 Singapore Dollars note. “Wen Hsi’s brush moves like a thousand troops, Yuanji would recognise this man if he were to be reincarnated today. All of sudden I hear the cries of gibbons, but the mountains I knew were actually a myriad of clouds away.” - Zhang Daqian

Le Chek Wen, by studying both Chinese and Western paintings, he had deepened his understanding of the Chinese ink and brush painting which requires not only superb technique, but also literary disciplines and philosophical cultivations that enable the artwork to transcend the material framework and to reach a sublimed height of mentality, that is where its superiority over the Western painting lies.
