TREASURES FINE ART AUCTION

CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.

THE BUYER

Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTION

Viewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale. Condition Reports Condition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot. Registration If you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.

THE AUCTION

Bidding All artworks are auctioned in consecutive numerical order. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in incremental price raise. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with TREASURES in advance. The lot being offered is usually illustrated on a screen. Bidding Increments Bidding generally opens below the low estimate and advances in the following increments: Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp. Rp.

AGUS SUWAGE (Purworejo, 1959) Obral, 1980

Acrylic on canvas: 93 x 141 cm Signed and dated, lower right: Agus Suwage 80 RP 150.000.000 - 200.000.000

Agus Suwage is one of Indonesia’s most important contemporary artists. He was born 1959 in Purworejo, Java, Indonesia. He lives and works currently in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Suwage is actively engaged in both local and international scenes since the late 1980s. Suwage studied Graphic Design at the Institute of Technology in Bandung, Indonesia from 1979-1986. He has participated in over 150 museum and gallery exhibitions around the world. His art practice - which includes drawing, painting, sculpture and installation - has been exhibited in major art events across Indonesia and abroad. For example at the Singapore Bienniale, Singapore (2006) and had a major retrospective at the Yogyakarta Art Museum, Indonesia (2009). Whilst his oeuvre predominantly circles around the phenomenon of “death”, he is also engaged with an obsession of portraiture. Since the mid 90’s his own projection onto canvas has become the focal point of his artistic concern. At the most intimate level, his works might just be a medium for him to face and overcome his constant personal fear towards it. He thereby often uses popular symbols and iconography to invite an engagement with the beholder. TREASURES FINE ART AUCTION

PAUL HUSNER

(Basel, Switzerland, 1942) Sanur and Beyond-Woman Praying at Museum Le Mayeurs Fishpond, 2009 Oil on canvas: 70 x 98 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Paul Husner 09 Literature: Dr. Jean Couteau, PAUL HUSNER, Paintings Of Bali, Publish by Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), pg.17

Born in Basel, Switzerland, 1942. He moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1964, studied in paintings and graphic art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (1965 – 1967) and continued to Rijks Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten (1967 – 1969). He frequently visits Indonesia especially Bali and works intensively in the island since 1997. Woman praying at Museum Le Mayeur’s Fishpond is still more emblematic. The focus is not on the interior of the compound. Of course, what remains of the famous pond of the residence has now lost much of its charm. Gone are the half-nude nymphs innocently frolicking under the flicker of sunlight piercing through the leaves of the frangipani. The water is stale and the flowers insignificant. But, by letting the rays of the sun refract off a revived flowery pond. Husner recreates the atmosphere of light so dear to his predecessor. An implicit homage to the souls of the place, Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok, is given by the woman presenting offerings at the foot of the two torso statues of the couple.

Auke Cornelis Sonnega An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting. After the war settled in Ubud in fellow artist Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963.
