He returned to the Netherlands in 1946, where he settled in Zeist. Painter, Illustrator and draughtsman of harbor scenes, City views, and landscapes, in an accurate impressionistic style.He died in Zeist, the Netherlands, February 3, 1966.

Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1919. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakarta (1986) and the ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta (1983), Jakarta (1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and participated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991). 14

Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Aziz came to learn nude painting during his study in Italy. In painting his nude, he presented the woman as a human being of the female species who has a lovely, beauty, natural thing of the human body. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Han Snel Already for sometimes, Bali is known all around the World as tropical paradise with mystical aura. Balinese culture with various rituals, the friendly people, and beautiful nature, makes Bali rich. These attracted the foreign visitors to come and visit the island. Among those visitors, are artist. Some of them stay in Bali for only few days, but some others keep on coming back to Bali many times, even ended up residing in the island. From time to time, fine arts in Bali rang by the existence of International artists; from the generation of Walter Spies, Rudolf Bonnet, Le Mayeur, Donald Friend, Willem Gerard Hofker, Theo Meier and Han Snel. Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel's work particularly illustrates Balinese culture and daily life. Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. It is clear that the artist initially picks a color scheme and sticks to it, he abstracts his figures to a certain extent and incorporates them into his background. His work sometimes graphical such as featuring lots of rounds or half circles in the paintings. Han Snel had a life-long love affair with Bali, married a Balinese wife, became an Indonesian citizen and lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. The International artists created art works, with Bali as their inspiration. It formed and playing an important role, as well as speaks about the image of Bali. Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. The graphic paintings featured stylized and somewhat elongated women in rich, sensuous colors. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Huang Fong was born in Genteng, Banyumas, East Java, 1936. He graduated from IKIP Seni Rupa, Surabaya, Indonesia. He was a member of Kamboja Group. He started painting under the guidance of painter Tan Kiaw Tek using watercolor. Huang Fong made friends with many senior painters and learnt a lot from them. One of them would be the famous Indonesia’s artist Affandi, whom he befriended in Bali in 1968. Since 1963, he was a professional Indonesian artist. At first, he painted oil on canvas, eventually, during 1974. He continued to learn oil painting under painter Nurdin in 1961. He came to Bali in 1967, lived in Ubud and later on moved to Denpasar. he began to exploring his arts by mixed the East and West techniques. Huang Fong has already held solo exhibitions since 1961 and his art pieces were exhibited in Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia

Born in Guangzhou in 1953, He showed such great technique and potential in painting that he was accepted as a Masters student at the highly esteemed Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts without having to do his BFA. A celebrated portrait artist, Zhang is renowned for his Red Guard series. His professional Affiliation as member of the Guangzhou Chinse Artist Association. The themes of Widayat’s works during half a century have not shifted much. They are centered on landscapes, flora and fauna, actual daily life, myths legends, and religious – spiritual issues. The same remark goes for his treatment of main object and decorative backgrounds with textures that has already become part of his characteristic features. One of the themes extensively treated by Widayat is flora and fauna. After his trip to Japan, the artist created many cherry blossom trees and animal objects like birds, horses and fishes. Fish seem to be the obsession for Widayat, who explained that his fascination for the creatures started in Japan. He went to deep-sea fishing with friends. The fish had all sort of strange, monstrous forms that appealed to Widayat’s fantasy. The fish is a symbol of good health, just like a proverb says “I feel as healthy as a fish in water.” Another reason for Widayat’s attraction to underwater world might be because he was born under the astrological sign of Pisces, the Fish. People with this sign must have the freedom to swim in all directions, living in the depths of the intuitive world of water.

Rusli was born in Medan, North Sumatra, 1912. He studied at the Kala Bhawana Santiniketan University of Rabindranath Tagore, India from 1932 to 1938, and he taught in 1951 at Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. He joined Seniman Muda Indonesia (Indonesian Young Artists) and helped established the Seni Rupa Masyarakat (Art for People Association). In 1955 he performed his solo exhibition at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His works were exhibited at the Biennale exhibition II in Sao Paolo, Brazil (1953) and held solo exhibition at Palazzo Brancaccio, Rome, Italy (1954 – 1956). He passed away in Jakarta on 11 May 2005. 22

His work was among the top five winners in the Philips Morris Indonesian Art Awards in 1996. In 2002, he held solo exhibitions at Galeri Nasiaonal Indonesia in Jakarta,a dn the USA, at CP Artspace in Washington, DC. His works were strongly expressed realist element and has been documented in the exhibition catalogue Post Photography Realistic Portrayal in 2002. His paintings are very rare due to his unproductiveness.

Agung Mangu Putra Born in 1963 at Sangeh, Central Bali, Mangu Putra was trained in Yogyakarta at Indonesia’s premier art school, Institute Seni Indonesia (originally ASRI, the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia). He majored in Design and Visual Communications and worked as a graphic designer until 1997 when he began to pursue career in the Fine Arts. This exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia as well as internationally in Singapore, China, South Korea, Australia, and the United Kingdom. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. He observed the historical events through photographs which later he reimagined those events and translated to his canvas. Often the scenes are dotted with Balinese villagers dressed in traditional robes for worship, perhaps reminiscent of Chinese philosopher painter’s work depicting the omnipotence of nature. Here, Mangu’s concern are not ritual ceremonies but rather the traditional culture of worship for the land; the land that scared and fundamental to our existence. His paintings are not meant to inform, but rather to share his feelings and thoughts through art.

Agus Suwage is first and foremost a graphic designer who has had 10-years experience with commercial art before he ventured into his current profession as an artist. In mid 1995, he borrowed the artistic mode of the German Anselm Keifer and the British Francis Bacon. Later, he tried to develop his own style starting to study with his own body and face in various poses and expression in realistic rendering as his means to convey sociocultural issues in cynical, ironical and parody atmospheres. Suwage’s artistic explorations have as the basic photographic images that he develops with his sensitiveness and manual skills in drawing, adding support from digital manipulation, to produce images. His works illustrate how the constructed image of Western avant-garde art has been inspirational, through “museum without walls”, to the culture of the world’s modern art. Suwage’s mode of appropriation is by borrowing iconic imageries as his reference, to serve the metaphors for values actively working between love and hate, amazement and derision at once, in parodying, and so on.

Since 1950s, Srihadi had produced dancing themes as his favorite objects. Among the dancing object comes from a variety of Balinese dances such as Legong, Pendet, Tambulilingan, Kenyar, Janger, Baris, Barong, Mask Dance, etc, and also the dance from Javanese like Bedoyo Ketawang. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. The dance is one of Srihadiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has its own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material.

From 1980 – 1988 he was professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts (Rijks Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten) in Amsterdam where he taught drawing and painting. He held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Europe, USA, Singapore, and Indonesia. His works are in the collection of the Netherlands state, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, City Council of Amsterdam, Duta Fine Art Museum, Jakarta, Neka Museum, Bali and private collections in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, etc. Husner works intensively in Bali since 1997.

Chen Wen Hsi 陈文希

Chen Wen Hsi (b. 9 September 1906, Guangdong, China–d. 17 December 1991, Singapore) was one of Singapore’s pioneer artists. A prolific painter who worked in a range of styles, Chen won acclaim for combining Western art with Chinese brush strokes in his paintings. He was also an influential art teacher at The Chinese High School and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) for many years. Life Another vital current through Chen’s practice was his insistence on close observation of nature and a solid foundation in drawing from life or life drawing (xiesheng). Chen painted both Western and Chinese paintings. His Western-style works in the early 1950s were realistic depictions infused with post-impressionistic and expressionistic elements. Chen’s Western painting style subsequently evolved, moving from simplified forms and strong colours to cubism, and later abstraction. Besides using oil paints for his Western artworks, Chen also experimented with acrylic and viscous paints as well as sand on canvas. Surrounded with natural landscape Chen’s often painted what he saw. The field of calabash (bottle gourd) a tropical vine grown for its fruit, which can either be harvested young and used as a vegetable, or harvested mature, dried, and used as a bottle has captured Chen’s attention. This simple plant has allowed him to explore his great mastery in combining colors of yellow and black ink in simple forms. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Born in Amsterdam, 1895. He studied art at the Hendrick de Keijser-school, the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He visited Indonesia in 1936 and stayed in Bali from 1931 – 1941. He helped establish the Museum Puri Lukisan and together with Walter Spies founded the Pita Maha Artist’s Association (1936). François Brochet was born January 3, 1925 in Paris. His father, Henry Brochet, was a painter and playwright. In 1942 a seventeen year-old Brochet met Le Corbusier in Vézelay. He imagined a world of theater, puppetry, programs and poetic texts disseminated through the woodcut. Le Corbusier responded to the desire of exuberant youth, by his doctrine, “drawing gives you true freedom.” was a French painter, sculptor and engraver. For over 54 years, he produced works daily accounting for over a thousand sculptures.In 1946, he produced the tapestries at the foot of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and sculpted Marie Noel, Cadet Roussel and Retif of Brittany. It’s around this time he finds the infinite world of printmaking, photography and printing techniques allow the dissemination of design. He surrounded himself with inspiration of Japanese prints, illustrations of the 19th century from Icard and Showman, engravers of the early 20th century such as PE Plowman, Roland Oudot and Jean Hélion, and compositions, cutouts, stencils of his contemporary Dewasne. Born in Vienna, Austria, 31 May 1901. He was a pupil of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. He was taught by Carl Fahringer. In 1927, he came to Indonesia, travelling in Java, Bali and Sumatra. He Was a member of the ”Bataviasche Kunstkring” and participated in some of their exhibitions. In a positive article about his work a contemporary critic wrote: “he paints like an animal devouring its prey”, referring to his vigorous expressionistic style. The Artist Finnaly settled in Vienna after having travelled all over the world. Painter watercolourist and draughtsman in a style, reminiscent of that of Rolland Strasser and C. Fahringer, although Rizek’s colouring is a brighter. He died in Vienna (Austria) in 1988.

Auke Cornelis Sonnega An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden (1910) and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesia when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. Voyaging across the archipelago, Sonnega would paint in the mountains of North Sumatra (Parapat and Medan) as well as Java and Bali. After the war settled in Ubud in Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran he dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. In 1951 he would meet the English linguist Husein Rofé in the Tampaksiring Guest House. Husein would subsequently introduce him to the charismatic Indonesian spiritual teacher Pak Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo in Yogjakarta. Subuh’s teachings and exercises (latihan), which evoked extraordinary insight upon those who practiced it, also exercised a profound and immediate effect on the subject matter and visuals seen in Sonnega’s paintings. Most of his spiritual works were inspired by Bali and stand out in stark contrast to his more commercial stylized portraits. He also made numerous portraits of young men and portraits of enigmatic pretty Balinese girls. These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963.

Dullah was born in Solo, 1919. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but has his own distinctive style of naturalism. He was well known for his landscape and portraits paintings. He was one of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community (1950). In 1956, he edited book of former Presiden Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (volume I & II). Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime. He has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, his works been kept in Dullah Museum in Solo. He died in 1996.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Chusin Setiadikara Born in Bandung on March 4th 1949, Chusin Setiadikara studied drawing and painting from one of the Indonesian old masters, Barli Sasmitawinata, from 1976 until 1980. He made an in-depth observation of what he would paint so that there was a spiritual level in his work, as he showed in several paintings of his works which he had emotionally involved with. For Chusin, painting with a photographic realism approach is not just copying reality onto the canvas, but the style of photographic realism is also considered an idiom. In addition, Chusin also uses an approach that is not just material. Chusin’s engagement with realistic forms is not based on this premise; it is linked with photography. Realistic portrayal in his paintings is not the same as the kind of realistic portrayal considered to have died out with the advent of photography. Choo Keng Kwang Born in the year of 1931 in Singapore, Choo Keng Kwang is a first-generation Singaporean artist well-known for his oil paintings of landscape, animals and nature. He is an anchored figure in the Singapore art circle for traditional paintings as well as one of the most eminent Singapore first generation artist. As an artist, Choo is widely recognized as one of Singapore’s first-generation artists, along with his contemporaries such as Georgette Chen and Liu Kang. A former teacher and school principal of Sin Hua School, he was Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA)’s head of Art Education until his retirement. He has held and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions locally and abroad. His artworks have been commissioned by royalty, dignitaries and governments. Choo Keng Kwang is famous for painting scenes of old Chinatown and doves. Mr Choo’s oil paintings look romantic and beautiful at first glance, with a strong nostalgic vitality that will appeal to the masses. From his beloved doves to his muse, Chinatown, his Nanyangstyle works feature a wide array of subjects in various countries, made in woodcuts, oil and batik-style painting. There is history in all these paintings. He shows us his paintings of old Chinatown, which capture nostalgic scenes of the wet market. Chinatown was one of his favourite themes along with the Singapore river scenes and market. Choo’s works convey “impressions” of the scene he painted. The viewer’s attention is drawn deliberately chosen focal points in the picture, the rest is faded off in a swirl of muted colours, leaving mind’s eye to fill in the missing details.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan is credited as one of the artist who records Indonesia's past events, through his paintings. Like many of his peers during the revolutionary period of Indonesia, Hendra Gunawan paints with a bleak mood, using darker colors to illustrate daily lives. An important factor that should be noted from this period is the change of color choices in Hendra's painting. Dark, gloomy colors transformed into bright and vibrant colors. Hendra Gunawan is an important figure who stimulates the development of modern art at the beginning of Indonesia's Independence years. His paintings depicts daily lives of people from different levels of society. Born in 1918, Hendra tropical colors were derived from the colorful life he had been experiencing. Hendra uses the female body as the object of his painting because through the object, the artist attempts to communicate various expressions of a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. The female characters exist in their daily activities, in their most relaxed moments in the role of a mother. For Hendra, memories of his mother plays an important role in his life which later gives significant influence in his paintings. The women figures are always depicted as having a multiplicity of roles that illustrate strength and bravery, but also grace and nurturing like illustrated in the present lot. Hendraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s keen interest in traditional elements can be seen in the depiction of batik motifs that support the presence of objects and paintings as a whole.

Lee Man Fong Born in Canton, China, 1913, Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. Basoeki Abdullah Born in Solo, January 27, 1915, he is the second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied at the Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was wellknown for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of portraits of beautiful women, he is also noted for his natural beauty and sensuous landscape, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. Basoeki likes to paint anything beautiful. Flamboyant flowers, women, landscapes, flora and fauna, to the leading figures painted very nicely. He often went to places for field trip, observing object for his painting and put it into sketch. His ability to depict nature makes all the objects seemed to be dramatic, alive and more beautiful in colors than the actual objects.

Antonio Blanco Born in Manila, the Philippines, 1927. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy in New York, the United States. He was later professionally based in Florida and California, and has lived in Ubud, Bali since 1952. He received awards from the Tiffany Fellowship, New York, La Cofradia de el Arros, Spain and has been honored by several international art organizations. Blanco has spent a lifetime sketching and painting many kinds of object like the sensuous teapots, the furrowed face of an old man, self-portraits and the look of a child. Among those themes, probably the most sought after works of Blanco were paintings of bewitching and often erotic world full of women in the pastel shades of an erstwhile romantic. Adolfs spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, where he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the dry-point, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and - together with his Japanese friend Léonard Tsuguharu Fujita - in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, United States, England, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland). The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes). In 1940 – shortly before the occupation of the Netherlands – Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam. On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs’ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in many well-known galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Hendra Gunawan There is no doubt that Hendra Gunawan is one of Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art. Using non-traditional, European visual elements, he nevertheless created works which were Indonesian in feeling and in experience. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. He used the natural painting such as mountain and beach as background to his main subject. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. Hendra’s paintings have formed a modern Indonesian folk art where they can be seen as the illustrations of a new mythology. Like many painters, Balinese traditions have become such a unique and interesting object to paint. From the ancient motifs, the dancers, the boat, the ceremony, people’s daily life and not to forget the Barong dances. The present lot illustrated the Balinese mythological character known as Barong; the mythical animal personifies the king of all Good spirits (Rangda). Tiny figures on the background still shows Hendra distinctive stylized figures of exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses. The rich color inhabit a breathtakingly beautiful paradise of fertile land, rich seas, majestic mountains, rivers, and spectacular beaches.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Srihadi Soedarsono The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

Ronald Manulang Ronald Manulang painting technique has developed from the classical tradition of realism mixed with ideas of pop arts. His objects are human figures that are deconstructed in terms of their roles and positions. They are people of old times. This means he has to make a journey into time to be able to make these people and shapes the objects of his artworks. But, the paintings that show special objects with clear time that is today are a series of his selfportraits paintings. He makes use of any available pictures and photographs. He also uses computer using Photoshop and Corel Draw program. By using computer he wants to pursue the accuracy of facial character, precision of composition and coloring. After printing the image, he manually paints the image in scale adjusted with the canvas. With soft brushstrokes, color or black-white halftone technique, he tries to obtain certain degree of plasticity of the object. He illustrates the object in great details, especially for the series of his history parody. His hatching and brushstroke technique almost reach the quality of photography, even if viewed from very close range.

S. Sudjojono Sindudarsono Sudjojono was born in Kisaran North Sumatra, on December 14, 1913. He studied painting from Mas Pringadi and a Japanese painter, Chiyoyi Yazaki. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986). Sudjojono was a prolific artist and writer. His artistic oeuvre covers a wide spectrum, from paintings, sketches, drawings, public art and reliefs as well as ceramic works. His paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he personally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him. Since he often painted landscape paintings, Sudjojono never stood against art of the landscape. In the period after 1965, Sudjojono’s landscape painting show a social-nationalist tendency, where in them elements of life and progress can be found, apparent in the depictions of farmers and fisherman at works and so on. These visual elements are lodged Sudjojono’s dream of ‘utopia’ and concern for the improvement of the peasant life. Sudjojono’s landscape paintings also raise concern towards the lives of the people and the environment within the area. Therefore, what makes Sudjojono’s landscape painting differ from the mooi indie is that he depicted the beauty and the wealth of the Indonesian landscape with its current problems and challenges. Moreover, the landscape do not illustrate physical reality of the nature, instead they represent the landscape of the artist’s mind.

Sunaryo Born in Banyumas, Central Java, 1943. He studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring Art Department in 1969 and continued to study marble carving for 7 months at Carrara, Italy in 1975. Sunaryo is an artist who mixes figurative themes with abstract backgrounds using very refined color palette and graceful lines that show great technical mastery. His works are dominated with lines and forms, mostly found in the use of white, brown, grey and black colors. Since 1978, his works have been granted numerous awards such as Honourable Mention in The Phillip Morris Group of Companies Asean Art Awards (1994,1995,1996), Honorable mention from Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Culture for enhancing Indonesian paintings creativity (1998). I Nyoman Meja I Nyoman Meja was born in Banjar Taman, Ubud 1952. He is among the most successful 1980s painters in Ubud. His works are dedicated in bold colors featuring anatomically correct figures. Hence his paintings show a fascinating assimilation of traditionalism and modernism. The traditionalist of Meja’s works is signified by his technique which still uses penelak and the illustration of his setting (houses, field, paddy fields) that strongly referred to Ubud style. While his modernity is describe with the lighting rationalization over its painting’s objects therefore Meja’s pieces can be categorized as post-traditional ones. During 1970s, he met Rudolf Bonnet. Through this meeting, his modern vision developed. His paintings depict various themes. Composition of masks once occupied his style. But is 1980s, he started to paint the world of children and his reputation soon enhanced. Children blackand-white-checkered cloth (Poleng) are illustrated in various scenes, such as variety of parades, cockfighting, and kecak performance. Meja’s paintings are collected by famous Museums in Bali. He has several talented pupils. Among them are I Wayan Matra, I Wayan Sukadana, I Made Artawa and I Wayan Asta. His painting once entered the national art competition, Indonesia Philip Morris Art Awards, as a finalist in 1997 and the winner of Indofood Art Awards 2002.

He was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter.

In 1942 a seventeen year-old Brochet met Le Corbusier in Vézelay. He imagined a world of theater, puppetry, programs and poetic texts disseminated through the woodcut. Le Corbusier responded to the desire of exuberant youth, by his doctrine, “drawing gives you true freedom.” was a French painter, sculptor and engraver. Throughout the years he had numerous exhibitions in Paris, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. The French Government made several purchases of Brochet's works for its Auxerre, Yonne department and numerous works exist in private collections. For over 54 years, he produced works daily accounting for over a thousand sculptures.In 1946, he produced the tapestries at the foot of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and sculpted Marie Noel, Cadet Roussel and Retif of Brittany. It’s around this time he finds the infinite world of printmaking, photography and printing techniques allow the dissemination of design. He surrounded himself with inspiration of Japanese prints, illustrations of the 19th century from Icard and Showman, engravers of the early 20th century such as PE Plowman, Roland Oudot and Jean Hélion, and compositions, cutouts, stencils of his contemporary Dewasne. In 1948 Brochet had his first exhibition in Paris.

Affandi Affandi was taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta in early 1955. He received a scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. Affandi’s interest in humanity made him learned a lot about the anatomy of human body in the beginning of his career. Affandi often painted his self portrait with people in his inner circle. He painted among others his families, his friends, his collectors, his house and his favourite objects like his pipe. Affandi felt he no longer had to fill up the whole canvas, so there are many “empty” spaces in his painting. Yet this is not because he was unable to fill the space, he realizes the quality of this emptiness and makes it a part of painting’s structure. His significant and distinguished works from Affandi was his strong lines, expressive gestural scribbles and spontaneous. He did not ornament figures, the lines were produced by his technique squeezing the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, using his fingers and palms to direct the medium over its surface and never mixed his colours. He approached paint as a medium in the same way that he did for pencil and charcoal, subduing the subtle modalities of colour to the movement of the hand and the creation of line.

Adrien Jean Le Mayeur De Merpres Born in Brussels (Belgium), on 9 February 1880, in the nobility and linked with the Belgium royal family, he was the son of a painter. Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with free-flowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. When his first visit to Bali, he was deeply impressed by the temple rituals and dances, and by a girl called Ni Pollok, a legong dancer, in particular. Balinese culture, nature and Ni Pollok had startled him of the strong magic of Bali and totally changed his vision about life. In 1933, Ni Pollok had turned 16 and was too old to dance the legong, so she agreed to be Le Mayeur’s model. It was a local tradition that a legong dancer is at her best only between 12 through 17 years. She became the main theme of his paintings and in 1935, when she was 18, they married in a traditional Balinese ceremony. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His brightly-clad, energetic and graceful dancers, dancing to the beat of the drums and bells, or his women, kneeling beside the loom weaving sarong cloth, fully demonstrated the tranquil and fine life of the Balinese. He captured the daily life of people he personally observed around his surroundings and poured them into canvas in stunning expression.

Born in Singapore, 1931. He graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). He learned art from his guidance of his father, Choo Kim Kye. He received awards The Public Service Medal, PBM (Art), Commendation award, and Bundaberg Art Society. He has been actively participated in several group exhibitions in many countries such as Taiwan, Japan, USA, Monaco, and France. He had also held several solo exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore, USA and Indonesia.

Chen Wen Hsi 陈文希 Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. He was awarded the Public Service Star from the President Tun Yusof Bin Ishak and received honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant. 138

Born in Bandung, 1935. At 20s, he learnt painting from painter Kartono Yudhokusumo at Sanggar Seniman and continued to study under painter Barli. In 1959, he held his exhibition in several major cities in Indonesia among others in Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya. He was also active participating in many exhibitions abroad such as in Denmark and Amsterdam. In 1969, he moved to Bali where he strongly in contact with European artists that develop his painting.

Willem Gerard Hofker Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1902. He studied arts at the academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam and also learnt under painter W. Witsen and Isaac Israels. He once lived in Bali from 1938 – 1944 together with his wife, Hofker-Reuter. His works were undoubted. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. Willem Hofker was a renowned and much sought-after portraitist. Between 1927 and 1981 Hofker made notes on over 1600 paintings, watercolors, etchings, lithos and mezzotints. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. His drawing was very refined and smooth, also very poetic. Besides inspired by Balinese women figure, Hofker also painted portraits of his relatives. All are captured in sharply-observed and widely varied attitudes. If no relatives were at hand, Willem would sit before a mirror and draw himself. Hofker left an even larger number of portraits – in various techniques – of his mother, all bearing witness to his great love. In later years his wife Maria was a frequent and very patient subject of portraits in all kinds of techniques. The present lot illustrates one of his objects in portrait paintings. Hofker used a remarkable striking way with the eyes, involving infinite nuances of color and splendid downward illumination. His entire portrait is typified by its especially capable expression, carefully considered compositional unity and subtle color nuances and grey tints in shaded planes. Even the smallest detail is the result of his awareness of the essence of his models.

Born in 23 April 1926 in Wates, Yogyakarta. He only had a short formal education until elementary school. His amazing talent and skill was sharpened through learning time with Affandi and Sudjojono. During revolutionary time in Yogya, he joined Seniman Indonesia Muda and then Pelukis Rakyat lead by Hendra Gunawan. In 1948, he was arrested and jailed in Netherlands colonial government because he was considered involving with guerrilla activity. After released from prisoner, he taught at Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia, Yogyakarta during 1950-1960. He was known as one of the strongest realism painter in Indonesia. He indeed closed with opposition and had been selected as Indonesia delegate in a goodwill journey to Chekoslovakia in 1954. Trubus was also a victim of opposition elimination in 1966. Trubus had mastery in capturing the dancing figure through expressive brush stroke that become his distinctive characteristic in painting. He tended to use secondary and tertiary colours that reflected his restless spirit.
