CONDITION OF BUSINESS The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.
THE BUYER
Estimated Price Estimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance). Reserve Price The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold. Buyer’s Premium Buyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

Roedyat Martadiredja Roedyat Martadiredja was born in Bandung, 1932 and began to learn painting in 1948 and later continued his study at the Bandung Institute of Technology. Although abstract style was a dominant stream in Bandung, Roedyat was one of the Bandung School artists who paint in a figurative style. Roedyat has an individual painting style which makes him different from other Bandung Artist. His works has deformation tendencies with soft tertiary colors and also complicated but well thought-out compositions. Roedyat has held solo exhibitions in Jakarta (1978) and was included in the East- West Center’s Art of Bali exhibition in Honolulu, Hawaii (1988). His works are unique, rich and colorful that creates a strong rhythm and his works can be found in private collections of European and American collectors. The present lot, Ika Dasa Ludra, illustrates an important ceremony in Bali to welcome the new year of Saka. Ika Dasa Ludra is a series of processions, ceremonies, and sacrifices held every 100 years at Pura Besakih, the “mother temple” of Bali, Indonesia. The temple, which comprises of about 30 separate temples honoring a great variety of Balinese and Hindu gods, was probably built about 1,000 years ago on the slopes of the volcanic mountain, Mount Agung. On March 17, 1963, the Eka Dasa Rudra was under way when Agung catastrophically erupted and killed more than 1,500 people. Since the sacrifices were interrupted, the Eka Dasa Rudra was resumed 16 years later. The temple complexes are formed in cubism style with large presentation of the crowds holding the offering for the ceremony. Images of gods were carried 19 miles down the mountain to be washed in the sea where entire villages gathered along the route. The color richness expresses the artist’s significant characteristic.

Han Snel Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali. Snel immediately fell in love with the island; a love so deep until he marred a local girl, apply for Indonesia citizenship and embrace Balinese Hinduism. He lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life. 019 HAN SNEL (Scheveningen, 1925 – 1998) Balinese Girls, 1976 Oil on canvas: 70 x 50 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Han Snel, Bali76 Provenance: Private collection, Jakarta RP 300.000.000 - 400.000.000 USD 23,080 - 30,770

Willem Gerard Hofker Willem Gerard Hofker was born in the Netherlands in 1902. He received a formal art education, encouraged by an amateur artist Father, he attended first the ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ at the Hague followed by the ‘Rijksacademie’ in Amsterdam. A prestigious commission to paint Queen Wilhelmina resulted in a trip to Indonesia in 1938. Inspired by the beauty of the women, the landscape and fascinated by the rituals of Bali in particular, he remained there until 1944. During his sojourn in Ubud, he socialised with the other foreign artists Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies who were living and working there at the time. Hofker’s works include many Balinese dancers and typical Balinese village scenes yet this painting is of a Dutch girl. Returning to the Netherlands after the Second World War, Hofker continued to paint for a living. While much of his work was commissioned portraits he would still recreate the beautiful Balinese scenes that he had encountered years earlier. Besides inspired by Balinese women figure, Hofker also painted portraits of his relatives. All are captured in sharply-observed and widely varied attitudes. If no relatives were at hand, Willem would sit before a mirror and draw himself. Hofker left an even larger number of portraits – in various techniques – of his mother, all bearing witness to his great love. In later years his wife Maria was a frequent and very patient subject of portraits in all kinds of techniques. The present lot illustrates one of his objects in portrait paintings. Hofker used a remarkable striking way with the eyes, involving infinite nuances of color and splendid downward illumination. His entire portrait is typified by its especially capable expression, carefully considered compositional unity and subtle color nuances and grey tints in shaded planes. Even the smallest detail is the result of his awareness of the essence of his models. 052 WILLEM GERARD HOFKER (Amsterdam, 1902 – 1981) Potrait of Tineke Antvelink, 1976 Oil on canvas: 55 x 61 cm Signed, upper right: W.G. Widayat One of the themes extensively treated by Widayat is flora and fauna. After his trip to Japan the artist created many different blossom trees with thousands of delicate flowers individually painted. His preference for the endless repetition of tiny flowers went back to his youth, for as a child he admired the batik cloths his mother made. According to Widayat the repetition of small elements in a painting makes the work stronger. He is convinced of the concept of “mass” to give a painting an extra dimension. Over time many other elements were introduced. The work “Burung-burung di atas pohon” shows a huge trees covered with tiny birds. In this painting figure of human beings are absent. Here, Widayat tried to present his amazing spectacle towards the unspoiled nature of flowers and the trees that creates the peaceful atmosphere.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple and totally Indonesian expression by observing the Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration of sign and symbols. Hendra created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of fish seller, fruit seller, chicken seller and vegetable seller. Hendra women are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals, and they are nourishing, nursing, mothering beauties, voluptuous and undulating bodies wrapped in brightly colored cloth. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style.

Le Pho Le Pho’s is considered as one of the “Masters” of twentieth century Vietnamese painter. In the year 1928-1938, he experiment his medium in various media and style into lacquer, oil on canvas and silk. The spirit of Le Pho’s work of style showed the radiance and simplicity of refined silk expressing the Sinhanga tradition that evolved in Japan in the early 20th century. The work of Le Pho is not a compromise between Vietnamese art, of Chinese origin, and Western art. It is a fusion of two mentalities, two worlds and two continents. Flowers are probably the most favorite subject in Le Pho’s painting. The present lot described one of the themes about flowers. The flowers were beautifully arranged in a vase. The sharpness and bright scene at the background is blended perfectly with the colorful flowers that blossomed out from the vases. This impressive painting probably revealed the romantic mood the painter wanted to achieve.

As an individual artist who is looking for meaning through imagery symbolism, Ugo’s scratchy paint shows his indeterminate sign and poetic upon his self consciousness. His rough scratches never recognized anything nor reach into form perfections. His horizontal lines sometimes go beyond his conscious and offer not only form but also meaningful message. The horse has its own history in the human history. Ugo explore the image of horse as the witness of the human bloddy and paintful history. The horse has a mistery towards the human betrayal of his/her own best friend. Ugo’s horse reflects a mind set that place the horse as his way to understand reality. Ugo’s horse plays as a personification and a methapore towards reality. Trubus Sudarsono Born in 23 April 1926 in Wates, Yogyakarta. Trubus Sudarsono is well known as an artist who actively commited in Lekra (Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat). He only had a short formal education until elementary school. His amazing talent and skill was sharpened through learning time with Affandi and Sudjojono. During revolutionary time in Yogya, he joined Seniman Indonesia Muda (SIM) and then Pelukis Rakyat lead by Hendra Gunawan (1950). He was also one of ASRI lecturers. In 1948, he was arrested and jailed in Netherlands colonial government because he was considered involving with guerrilla activity. Trubus Soedarsono was killed during the purges which followed the aborted communist coup in September, 1966. His oil paintings often featured ethereal, impressionistic images of Indonesian dance and culture. Trubus had mastery in showing people through agile, expressive brush strokes that drew appreciation and recognition around the world. The dancer theme is rather romantic but not realistic, as it appears more expressive and impressionistic. The gesture of the dancer and especially the background, display the artist’s characteristic brush strokes.
