Theo Meier Born in 1908 in Basle Switzerland, He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel and Academies of Art in Berlin and Dresden. In 1936 he settled in Bali for 20 years then moved to Thailand in 1961. His works have been the collection of former President Soekarno, the Museum Neka in Bali, the Agung Rai Fine Arts Gallery in Bali, and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. Meier, like the city in which he grew up, was fortunate to avoid the hardships of war which quickly overtook much of Europe. Following in his father’s footsteps, he underwent a commercial apprenticeship. At the same time, he attended the Basle School of Art, and enjoyed late night discussions with the local painters, an experience which proved fertile to the young painter. From Switzerland to the South Pacific, from Bali to Thailand, Theo Meier’s life was as varied and exotic as his artistic output, his character as colourful as the oils with which he painted. Theo Meier’s paintings have achieved worldwide recognition for their technical excellence, and artistic integrity. He concerned very closely in Balinese people and tradition. He loved painting the Balinese women, who in contrast to the Polynesian women “were only too happy to undress”. Nudes were his most favorite subjects, although landscapes and flowers also deeply inspired him. In Bali, Theo Meier found what was his dream after all these formative years: Returning to simplicity, purity, and nature - having “Rousseau” in the back of his head. Besides, the ritual songs and dances of Bali inspired him to even further heights.

Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, on May 11, 1963. He graduated from the faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta majoring Visual Communication Design (1990). His first exhibition was in Dewata Gallery (1987) at Taman Budaya Denpasar. Being a designer did not satisfy him as an artist then he decided to engage in full time painting in 1998. Since his first solo exhibition in Ubud (1990) his name was considered as valuable painter in Indonesia. He held his solo exhibition at National Gallery, “Teater Rakyat”, Jakarta, 2010; “Silent Word”, Gajah Gallery, Singapore (2008), Mandala, Bidadari, Ubud-Bali (2007), “Belief, Rupa Gallery”, Surabaya (2005),etc. He also joined in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and other country. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. It is not surprising then that some of Mangu Putra’s works criticize human activities that damage the world. Mangu uses strong lines, shapes and colors in mature and harmonious ways. His vision of nature is “polluted” by civilization. His works criticize human activities that have deteriorated the natural world. His series on exploitation focuses on the slaughter of animals and criticize environmental issues. Natural objects are shown as if through sophisticated technological imagery, so that they appear artificial, attractive, provocative, and even fantastic. The awareness of painting as an artificial construct pushed the artist to search for a deeper meaning, for something more substantial behind the glamorous surface. With all the artificial qualities, Putra’s creations often support symbolic meanings, which are concentrated in the form of “content” or “context.” Some of his works have messages that describe environmental problems such as the exploitation of nature, pollution, the killing of animals, and global warming.

Popo Iskandar Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. Popo’s career started with on-the-spot painting, capturing the concrete life events in the field. Although his early years of painting was influenced by Van Gogh’s style, there was an evidence that he had experimented further with some other styles like cubism, abstract composition, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and other media or methods like monoprints. We could easily see his tendency to paint certain objects in repetition within the coverage of a single style, relying simply on memory and imagination. The major objects he mostly dealt with were no other than cats, roosters and leopards. These kinds of themes had become Popo’s trademark which he treated in a repetitive and minimalist manner. Popo Iskandar started painting using cats object in the early 1960s which then developed into leopards in early 1980s. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. In painting a cat, he feels that he doesn’t only present it physically, but that he tries to express the meaning and the impression of the cat’s appearance for him. So, a cat for him is a totality of inspired understanding, an integrated understanding of music and poetry. Popo’s leopards strongly express smooth line as if the flow of the music. As in cats, leopards figure often shown alone or in groups. Therefore, we often see a leopard’s or cat’s face with many bodies. The moon at the background can be a symbolic shape that was not reflects the actual mean (moon, balloon or sun), but only as a circle of compositor element. The circle often used to give strong impression that surrounds the object mystery or only as the rhyme balancing. But, sometimes it was only like a dot in a sentence, as idea synchronizing.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He showed great artistic talent from a young age. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before becoming a full time artist in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more accolades as well as acknowledgement. Lee Man Fong officially became the presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. During 1952, Lee quietly developed his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, and gibbons. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s paintings of Doves are especially noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently have been eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.”

S. Sudjojono Born in Kisaran, Sumatra, 1914. He first studied painting under the artist Pringadi, and later from Jasaki, a Japanese painter. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986). Sudjojono was a prolific artist and writer. His artistic oeuvre covers a wide spectrum, from paintings, sketches, drawings, public art and reliefs as well as ceramic works. His paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he personally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him. His style and artistic preoccupation were also diverse, from his early and monumental works, which significantly reflect on the true spirit of Indonesia and the people during the war and their struggle against independence; to landscapes; still-lifes; portraits and renditions of his more personal life and family at later years.

Srihadi Soedarsono The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement. In dance paintings from the mid – 1980s onwards, Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere shrouding the figures is gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves, slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands.

Hendra Gunawan Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. His paintings dating from the late 1950s and the 1960s – believed by many to be the best period in his artistic career – are scarce. He took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983. Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings. He explored their everyday lives, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Portrays of women figures, sellers or mother and child were on old theme that constantly revisited throughout the artist’s career. Hendra women are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals, and they are nourishing, nursing, mothering beauties, voluptuous and undulating bodies wrapped in brightly colored cloth. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. He used the natural painting such as mountain and beach as background to his main subject, like illustrated this present lot. Hendra’s stylistic figures and landscapes are perhaps influenced by his deep knowledge of rich signs and symbols of Javanese culture. Java’s monumental landscapes illustrated in decorative approach of color are also relates to the deeper level of traditional artistic expression in Indonesia. 050

Le Mayeur De Merpres Born in Brussels (Belgium), on 9 February 1880, in the nobility and linked with the Belgium royal family, he was the son of a painter. Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. When his first visit to Bali, Jean Le Mayeur was deeply impressed by the temple rituals and dances, and by a girl called Ni Pollok, a legong dancer, in particular. Balinese culture, nature and Ni Pollok had startled him of the strong magic of Bali and totally changed his vision about life. In 1933, Ni Pollok had turned 16 and was too old to dance the legong, so she agreed to be Le Mayeur’s model. It was a local tradition that a legong dancer is at her best only between 12 through 17 years. She became the main theme of his paintings and in 1935, when she was 18, they married in a traditional Balinese ceremony. Thus painting sensual images of Balinese women, including his beautiful Balinese wife, the dancer Ni Pollok have made Le Mayeur become famous painter.

Richard Winkler Richard Winkler was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, 1969. He studied arts at the Nyckelviken School of art which later continued his study at the Beckmans School of Design. He was interested in exploring human body and anatomy which he put into canvases in exaggerated figures. In the period of 1994-1995, he traveled to several cities in Europe to deepen his visual arts. His works have been exhibited in Asia as well as European countries. As one of the foreign artists who visualized Bali, Richard Winkler continues the romantic tradition of painting on the island. Winkler was very interested in the human body and anatomy which he put into canvases in exaggerated figures. In the period of 1994-1995, he traveled to several cities in Europe to deepen his visual arts. In 1997, he moved to Bali and creates paintings inspired by the place. Besides painting human figures, he also interested in painting plants of the tropical forest. Plants in most of his paintings are a direct representation or abstraction of fertility of the real tropical plants and a pattern that enrich and strengthen the views of his works. In the present lot, Winkler use of the bright color, motif, texture and light technique made a beautiful combination on the painting.

Acrylic on canvas: 93 x 141 cm Signed and dated, lower right: Agus Suwage 80 SGD 15,000 - 20,000 USD 11,400 - 15,200
Agus Suwage is one of Indonesia’s most important contemporary artists. He was born 1959 in Purworejo, Java, Indonesia. He lives and works currently in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Suwage is actively engaged in both local and international scenes since the late 1980s. Suwage studied Graphic Design at the Institute of Technology in Bandung, Indonesia from 1979-1986. He has participated in over 150 museum and gallery exhibitions around the world. His art practice which includes drawing, painting, sculpture and installation - has been exhibited in major art events across Indonesia and abroad. For example at the Singapore Bienniale, Singapore (2006) and had a major retrospective at the Yogyakarta Art Museum, Indonesia (2009). Whilst his oeuvre predominantly circles around the phenomenon of “death”, he is also engaged with an obsession of portraiture. Since the mid 90’s his own projection onto canvas has become the focal point of his artistic concern. At the most intimate level, his works might just be a medium for him to face and overcome his constant personal fear towards it. He thereby often uses popular symbols and iconography to invite an engagement with the beholder.

Sunaryo Born in Banyumas, Central Java, 1943. Sunaryo studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring Art Department in 1969 and continued to study marble carving for 7 months at Carrara, Italy in 1975. Then he joined the Decenta group which was reacting against the more traditional “Bandung school” that had pioneered abstract art and was viewed generally as more Westernized than other schools of thought at the time. Artists in Decenta were trying to reprocess the visual elements of Indonesia’s traditional arts in search of “local colour and their cultural roots,” Sunaryo recalled. Sunaryo theme of Balinese Dancer and Barong are most desirable by the art connoisseurs. Back in the 1980s, Sunaryo established himself with his lyrical paintings of Indonesian themes, such as Balinese dancers and barongs (masked dancers who symbolize the “spirit king”), often incorporating traditional art forms and motifs. But over the last 10 years, his works had become much more politically conscious. The dancer series often expressed his social and environmental concerns and issues like “the tension of tradition and modernity” or political issues through symbolization of colors. Abstract or figurative, his work has always been known for its formal strength and inventiveness, but his work has also always been about social, environmental and spiritual issues, and goals.

Affandi Born in Cirebon, 1907. Affandi was taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta in early 1955. He received a scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. The significant and distinguished works from Affandi was his strong lines, expressive gestural scribbles and spontaneous. He did not ornament figures, the lines were produced by his technique squeezing the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, using his fingers and palms to direct the medium over its surface and never mixed his colors. He approached paint as a medium in the same way that he did for pencil and charcoal, subduing the subtle modalities of color to the movement of the hand and the creation of line. Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. The theme of his paintings always forwarded the humanity aspects of many events. Objects like chicken seller, duck seller, man and cockerel, and animal market directly expressed his pure emotion in the form of strong wild lines dominated with black hues. Affandi’s strokes expressed his wild, vicious, and discontentment towards the fixed form of expression. He always paints in simultaneous movement and never tied with certain kind of forms. Very often, despite the artist’s apparent focus on the main subject of the animals, Affandi is very fond of creating a sense of spontaneity by adding idiosyncratic details such as the feet of the onlooker, the hands, finger and sometimes circle of the sun. By doing this, he creates a sense of festivity of the crowd and the ongoing activity. Awards: 1969 1974 1997 1978

Among the dancing object comes from a variety of Balinese dances such as Legong, Pendet, Tambulilingan, Kenyar, Janger, Baris, Barong, Mask Dance, etc, and also the dance from Javanese like Bedoyo Ketawang. The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has it own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material. The costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

Widayat Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space. Widayat is a famous painter with “decora-magic” style, which means the works were fully decorated and can produced magical effect. His works are based on his daily life experiences. Such experiences he imparts through the representations of human and animal figures, plants and imaginary beings, characterized by spontaneity and uninterrupted strong lines. Most of his paintings can give magnificent excitement by his ability in creating stylistic forms of trees, birds, fishes, or his favorite animal. The form also gives decorative motif with the use of hard and dark color producing textures and subtle impression.

Hendra’s paintings have formed a modern Indonesian folk art where they can be seen as the illustrations of a new mythology. The stylized figures of exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. His subjects of women with long tresses, young mothers, wives, fish sellers, fruit vendors express his goddesses and heroines, while the heroes features were illustrates as the fathers, husbands, fishermen and farmers. They inhabit a breathtakingly beautiful paradise of fertile land, rich seas, majestic mountains, rivers, and spectacular beaches. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. The present lot was one of the Hendra’s paintings that described the theme of the common people’s daily life – washing by the river. He explored the activity, capturing it movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Still, he present the picture by using the natural objects such as huge tree, waterfall and blue river scene as background to his main subject, like illustrated in the present lot.

Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, women were Lee’s most cherished subject. His figures reflect a wealth of thought and inner content. Lee Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. His portraits excel equally in form and expression, vitality and faithfulness, and rank above works. The theme of Balinese Weaver is exceptionally rare and most desirable by collectors. This particular female archetype featured prominently in the Balinese works, as if the artist was trying to capture the energy of the weaver and the female spirit. He represented the women in a respectful light, engaging in daily activities and shows the artist experimenting with composition, colors, and aesthetics.

Le Mayeur De Merpres Jean Le Mayeur is a painter best known for objects such as Belgian Landscapes, Scenes of Asia and Africa, Balinese Genre, Figures and Nudes. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His brightly-clad, energetic and graceful dancers, dancing to the beat of the drums and bells, or his women, kneeling beside the loom weaving sarong cloth, fully demonstrated the tranquil and fine life of the Balinese. He captured the daily life of people he personally observed around his surroundings and poured them into canvas in stunning expression. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with free-flowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. He married with the famous Legong Dancer, Ni Nyoman Pollok, who was his bestknown model and settled in Bali in 1932. His works shows effective use of light and shadow in bright colors. He donated his house and his studio in Sanur, Bali, to the Indonesian Government which is now known the Le Mayeur Museum.

Srihadi Soedarsono Born in Solo, December 4, 1931. In 1958 he studied fine arts at the Institute of Technology Bandung and the Ohio State University, United States (1960 – 1962). His works has been exhibited in Indonesia, the United States, Australia and Brazil. He received cultural awards from both the Indonesian government (1971) and Australian (1973). In 1978 and 1987, he received the highest award in the Biennial Exhibition in Jakarta. Srihadi is currently a senior lecturer in painting and drawing at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and the Bandung Institute of Technology. Srihadi focuses on several themes or genres including landscapes, religious monuments and the dances of Java and Bali. Srihadi employs various methods to approach the spirit of a painting. By immersing himself in the character and form, he searches for the inner meaning. A logical consequence is that during the process of visualization, there is a filtering process and giving of one’s spirit. With every painting he creates, Srihadi goes into a state of ecstasy while executing the work. He is successful in his total exploration of the subject-matter that he has chosen to paint, and he continues to experiment during the creative process and when he is actually painting. He is certain that experiencing to the full and experimenting with the subjects of his study are the ways to hone and uplift one’s spirit or inner feelings. It could be said that Srihadi is divinely inspired when creating each and every one of his paintings. In Srihadi horizon landscapes, the meeting of land and sky, or land and sea, usually portends a more somber mood than in his seascape horizons. The sky no longer imposes its presence on the eye nor guides it along a distant shoreline to the world beyond. In the present painting, green is the dominant color of Srihadi’s symbolic landscapes. The horizon and the sky in the uppermost part of the canvas tend to be relegated to a secondary role. The surface is usually rendered in green, and the visual opposition between the large, natural elements and the small manmade elements dominates the work. The landscape shows fertile place painted in green, the white nuances of the sea contrasted against the blue sky and the curve lines forms the dynamic impression of the energy.

Le Pho Le Pho’s is considered as one of the “Masters” of twentieth century Vietnamese painter. In the year 1928-1938, he experiment his medium in various media and style into lacquer, oil on canvas and silk. The spirit of Le Pho’s work of style showed the radiance and simplicity of refined silk expressing the Sinhanga tradition that evolved in Japan in the early 20th century. The work of Le Pho is not a compromise between Vietnamese art, of Chinese origin, and Western art. It is a fusion of two mentalities, two worlds and two continents. Flowers are probably the most favorite subject in Le Pho’s painting. The present lot described one of the themes about flowers. The flowers were beautifully arranged in a vase. The sharpness and bright scene at the background is blended perfectly with the colorful flowers that blossomed out from the vases. This impressive painting probably revealed the romantic mood the painter wanted to achieve.
