Departmental staff embark on a Road Safety Roadshow in local communities People need to know that an accident can change a person’s life and in most cases, it can be avoided by upholding to the standards of road safety. This is the message, we as the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison is driving as we embark on a Road Safety Campaign to intensify road safety in communities by educating and raising more awareness in communities. This campaign will stretch to communities in Pella, Petrusville, Barkley West, Garies, Winsorton, Richmond and Prieska. This will not only be driven by our road safety unit but it will become the responsibility of all managers in the department and the involvement of staff. This campaign drives to save lives and help our community members make safe and informed decision when taking to the roads. Simply acts of not speeding, buckling up, driving and walking sober are all practices that can help save lives if practised.
Mr Steven Jonkers, Head of Department, said “…this is part of our continuous roll out of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020.” “As we have been saying, we are taking road safety very seriously and we are continuing with our 365 Road Safety Campaign hence we have tasked managers to take to the communities and educate our people about road safety.” “We are requesting communities to join hands with government in its efforts to make roads safe for all road users,” said Jonkers. He said all managers and officials involved in the campaign had the responsibility to be innovative in sending the road safety messages to communities while reaching all age groups, as both young and old were equally affected directly or indirectly. Henry Van Coller, a manager at the Department, was at Pella on Monday, talking to a crowd of about 500 community members and scholars on the issues around road safety.
“We want to inculcate a culture of road safety in our scholars and for them to become ambassadors for road safety. They need to know that a crash can ruin lives and it leaves pain in the families that are left behind,” he said about his messages he shared. He added that with the festive season fast approaching it was even more important for people to adapt to the culture of making safe road usage decisions as it will be easier to apply in everyday life. “We want people to take road safety seriously and report reckless and drunken driving to the police or traffic officials. They must right down the number plates and report it,” said Van Coller about people taking ownership of road safety in their communities. During his presentation he played videos illustrating how easily and quickly an accident can occur. He was also in the company of the SAPS, Road Accident Fund, Provincial Traffic and the Department’s Road Safety Unit that all shared their information to the community.
Taking early action on river health The international Triwaters team – off on a source-to-sea river health expedition on the Vaal and Orange Rivers in January 2015 – now conducts miniSASS assessments on three continents! MiniSASS is the perfect tool to help communities measure the health of their rivers. That is where Triwaters and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) are getting involved. Through riverside talks along the Vaal and Orange Rivers the team will engage schools and communities on how to measure river health and how to act on the results of their efforts. Engaging communities in adopting their rivers and conducting miniSASS assessments are core themes at the riverside talks. The Triwaters team has decided not to wait for the expedition to start before making a difference. Recently Troy Glover became the first person to conduct a miniSASS assessment in Canada, while Brett Merchant took Australia's inaugural sample. Back in South Africa, Franz Fuls also conducted his first sample. Brett conducted two assessments in suburban Adelaide, and the results of his assessment showed that the city is maintaining impressive health in its rivers. He sampled on the Sturt Creek in an area where a man-made wet-
land occurs. Brett elaborates on his effort: “The first sample site was downstream of a wetland on Sturt Creek in the middle of suburbia where pollution from street run-off was probable. The second sample was in the upper reaches of Sturt Creek surrounded by scrubland but also deciduous trees and weeds. I borrowed a net from Urrbrae wetlands for the testing.” Troy took a more adventurous approach to his inaugural sample at Kingston Mills in Ontario, Canada. Troy explains: “Kingston Mills is a highly historic point for the Canadian province of Ontario. In order to get to Kingston Mills, I kayaked 10km up the Cataraqui River crossing Kingston Harbour. The paddle was primarily dominated by dense vegetation which had been significantly dredged for the passing of boat traffic through the main channel. I had to stick to the main channel in order to not become stuck in the vegetation!” Unfortunately Troy's sample did not tell the story of a clean river, like Brett found. Possible causes for the less great river health in his sample are gradual de-calcification of the region's rivers, and the sampling location below a dam. Back in South Africa Franz took to a tributary of the Vaal River close to Ermelo in the Mpumalanga Province. He did his first miniSASS sample just below Brummer Dam, one of two
dams originally built to supply water to Ermelo. The sample produced a poor result, indicating that the stream is not very healthy at the sampling point. In a letter to the team, Mark Graham of GroundTruth summarizes the excitement that is building around the preparation of the Triwaters Sourceto-Sea Expedition early next year: “Well done and great to see the reach of this tool. Now really looking forward to the „real trip‟ when you chaps survey the Vaal and Orange How do we measure river health? The easiest way for ordinary citizens to measure river health is through a friendly tool called miniSASS. MiniSASS guides people on how to collect little bugs and small critters in streams, identifying them with an easy chart; logging this information onto a google earth map where scientists, government and the whole world can view the results; and take any necessary action. MiniSASS (Mini Stream Assessment Scoring System) is a citizen science tool that was developed by a team of highly skilled scientists who wanted to empower ordinary people to become involved in keeping their rivers healthy. South Africa's Department Water Affairs, the Water Research Commission, WESSA, and GroundTruth collaborated to bring a robust and reliable tool to the people of South Africa and the world. The first
step in miniSASS is to get your tools. A white ice cream tub, a cheap fine meshed net (which you can make from your mother's lace curtain at your own risk), and the miniSASS forms that you download for free are the essential tools you need. For polluted water gloves and gumboots can be handy, and some antiseptic hand wash. For deeper and larger rivers a life-jacket is also important.
Next you find your river or stream, and go to it. Look around you. Take notice of your environment. What plants do you see, what wildlife? What was the weather like? Describe the stream. Now it’s time to start playing! Grab the net, and head to the stream. Muck around, kick over rocks, mush up the sand and scoop up with the net downstream. Pick up rocks to look for critters, go search in reed beds. After about five minutes it’s time to look at the catch. Empty the net into the ice-cream tub, add some water, and use the miniSASS forms you downloaded to identify the creatures you found. Enter those scores onto your worksheet. Remember to return your catch to the river where you found it! When you get home, log in at www.minisass.org, and enter your sample results online to get your score.

MEC Mac Jack offered a social relief to destitute families affected by the storm in The Northern Cape MEC for Health, Mr Mac Jack on behalf of the Provincial government yesterday made a visit to Petrusville in the Pixley Ka Seme District, as part of government’s intervention to assist households affected by the catastrophe caused by the storm. During the visit, the MEC was accompanied by the Renosterberg Mayor; Mr Zet Kwinana and the Municipal Manager, Councillors as well as Departmental officials from all spheres of government to meet with all destitute families at their homes to offer them food-parcels and blankets for them to escape the freezing weather. The Municipal Disaster management report indicated that more than 34 houses were damaged by a heavy storm on the 03rd of November
2014, between 19h50 in the evening, which left approximately about 120 people consisting of parents and children homeless and destitute at the time. During a meeting organised and addressed by MEC Mac Jack yesterday, community members appreciated the manner in which government has responded in arresting the situation by making sure that all those affected were provided with temporary accommodation and meals. Partnership between SASSA, Department of Social Development, Renosterberg Municipality and Department of Health has thus for ensured that people are given blankets and food parcels as well as other needs. The MEC in his address to the community comforted affect-
ed families on their losses caused by the catastrophe and further urged them not to lose hope. “Your pain is our pain; your loss is our loss as government. Please do not despair and lose hope, we will do everything in our power to normalise the situation. We remain accountable to you at all times, as we are a government of the people, by the people, for the people” The MEC also took the opportunity to appreciate the role played by stakeholders and further encouraged them to continue working together with communities and government in providing assistance during such tragic disasters. Een van die dogters het ook „n solo voorgedra wat baie pragtig was. Die kerk het omtrent uit sy nate gebars soos die gemeente die betrokke aand GOD geloof en geprys het soveel so dat jy die Gees van GOD kon aanvoel.

How Pirates Snatched Jele From Chiefs
'Magents' has been a professional footballer for close to 10 years now and, the Middelburg-born player has become one of the top and respected defenders in the PSL. Jele played an important role for Vladimir Vermezovic’s side when Bucs beat SuperSport United 21 in their league game last weekend. In this week’s edition of Soc-
cer Laduma, issue 899, the player’s agent, Walter Mokoena, revealed that Jele was on his way to the Amakhosi when Bucs was made aware of his availability and quickly signed him. “Yeah, Happy was my first ever deal. He was actually meant to play for Kaizer Chiefs! He was training there when (Ernst) Middendorp was around, but I felt like
they went behind my back to sign the player, so then I took him to Pirates. "I intercepted him at Park Station. He was going to Chiefs, and I took him straight to Irvin Khoza and Screamer (Tshabalala) and they signed him on the spot. They’d never even seen him play,” said Mokoena.
Lebese Maintains Chiefs' Unbeaten Run Sundowns started the better of the two sides and dominated possession for most of the opening exchanges. However, it was Chiefs who had the first chance of the half, as Siphiwe Tshabalala picked out Kingston Nkhatha, who failed to trouble Kennedy Mweene from close range.
VIR ENIGE NUUS OF ADVERTENSIES SKAKEL :DIE HORISON: TEL:083 416 4539
That proved to be the best chance of the half and Stuart Baxter's side started to see more of the ball as the half drew to a close, with Tshabalala proving to be their liveliest player. Sundowns, meanwhile, failed to take advantage of their early dominance and were restricted to shooting from distance due to the good work from the Chiefs' defence.
It was Sundowns who took the lead 10 minutes after the halftime break thanks to fine curling effort from Teko Modise. The was a much higher tempo the game following the opening goal and Baxter's men started stamping their authority on the game in the hope of getting the equaliser.
