Boat orientation class

April 7 & 21 These one-hour orientation classes are required in order to checkout motor-driven ORC boats. Advance class registration required. Cost is $5. Before attending class, boater must take a free on-line boater safety course at www.boatus.org and pass with a minimum score of 80%. Call the ORC after testing to schedule an orientation class.

April 26 This is one of our most popular spring excursions. Join us as we discover the Barrier Islands with a experienced tour guide along with a wonderfully scenic stopover on Capers Island. Trip leaves the ORC promptly at 9:15 a.m. Once we get underway, the tour is approximately 90 minutes in length along a 30 mile route. Jet ski experience helpful, but not necessary. Cost: $179 per person. RecOn price: $30 per person. (The RecOn price is available to active duty and their family members.) Advance reservations needed. Call or stop by for more details.

Sandy & Pawleys Island tours April 18 We will start our trek by taking a private ferry boat across the Waccamaw River to gain access and tour the National Wildlife Refuge. While there, we’ll learn about the ancestors and present-day inhabitants who are preserving this sanctuary. The group will enjoy lunch on island then we’re off to visit Pawleys Island. Transportation, tours and lunch are included in the $50 per person price. Sign-up early because space is limited on this very popular trip.

Savannah culinary & wine adventure April 25 Two amazing experiences in one trip! We are headed to Savannah, Ga., for the East Side Food Tour and Tybee Wine Fest Grand Wine Tasting. First, we will gain exclusive entrance into a major restaurant and sample food not on the menu and only the locals know they are available. Then we’ll tour the historic district for more sampling. Next, it’s off to the wine fest for some serious sampling. More than 100 international wines will be on hand to tease your palate. The fest features live music, a spectacular silent auction, plus everyone gets a commemorative 2015 Tybee Wine Festival wine glass to take home. Cost is $135 per person. Base-wide yard sale

May 9, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Here’s an awesome opportunity to turn your spring cleaning clutter into cash! This installation-wide yard sale at the Air Base Picnic Grounds is open to buyers and sellers. Price per table for sellers is $20. Don’t have a table? We will provide you with one at no additional charge. There is no admission fee for buyers. Deadline for sellers to register at the ORC is May 1. We hold this sale rain or shine! Call for more details.

Horseback riding trip

Skeet and Trap 101 Skeet: April 26 - 10 a.m. Trap: May 6 & June 10, 5 p.m. These two-hour classes are geared towards first-time shooters and folks who would just like to give skeet and trap a try. The $26 per session cost includes one round of skeet or trap, professional instruction, ammunition and use of a shotgun if needed. Prior sign-up is required at the Outdoor Recreation Center or the skeet range.

April 26 & May 9 Take a scenic one-hour walking trail ride around historic Middleton Plantation. Encounter marsh birds, eagles, deer and maybe catch a glimpse of some napping alligators. Trip departs the ORC at 10:15 a.m. Regular price, $70; active duty & family member RecOn price, $20. Advance sign-up a must. Call for additional details.

Swim lesson sign-ups open The Air Base swimming pool opens for the season May 23, with swim lessons beginning June 15. Registration for lessons starts April 15 at the Air Base Outdoor Recreation Center. Sessions are one week in length, MondayFriday, for 45 minutes. There is a total of eight sessions for the year for regular lessons at a cost of $25 per child per session. Start times are 9 & 10 a.m. Also, there are two Parent & Tot sessions: July 7-10 & 21-24, 5-5:45 p.m. The cost for these lessons is $30. For additional details, call or stop by the ORC.

April Liberty & Single Airman Initiative Programs Photography Workshop - April 4. Downtown Charleston. This workshop is comprised of three sections: 1) A walk-about of down town Charleston, accompanied by two instructors, guiding you to take quality photos with film and/or digital cameras. 2) Return to site to process film and/or process digital images. 3) Make finished prints of select images in both film and/or digital dark rooms. All cameras & materials are provided for you. $80. Trip leaves the Weapons Station Bowman Center at 7:30 a.m. and the Air Base ORC at 8 a.m. Returning by 6 p.m. Please bring money to buy lunch. Archery/Obstacle Challenge - April 10. Air Base Skeet & Trap Range. Try the 3D archery, stationary target area and airsoft obstacle course.
