Women's History panel held at Joint Base Charleston By Senior Airman Tom Brading Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs

On March 13, 2015, five women, from different military cultures, spoke to an audience about the education and empowerment of women continuing to shape the US military. From the civil war battlefield to the present, stories of women's contributions to military history were chronicled in the 15th Airlift Squadron auditorium. The panelists acknowledged the contributions of military women who served before them and spoke of the challenges they had faced and overcome in their own careers. The event kicked off with opening words from Col. John Lamontagne, 437th Airlift Wing commander. Referring to the women's achievements in the military he said, "We've come a long way but we still have a way to go." The event's special guest echoed Lamontagne's sentiment. Brig. Gen. Tammy Smith, U.S. Army Reserve Deputy

Chief of Staff brought more than 26 years of military experience and insight to the discussion. Today, she serves more than 206,000 Soldiers in an all-volunteer force. "Amazing women bring skill sets to any environment," said Smith. "They don't need to be coddled. They don't break. They prove themselves." Smith added she hoped to see more women integrated into combat career fields. Some of Team Charleston's finest represented their military branches on the panel as well. Capt. Erica Stooksbury, 15 AS C-17 instructor pilot, graduated from the Air Force Academy prior to training other pilots in Charleston. Stooksbury included the importance of leadership, compassion and mentoring as components of a successful military career. She also noted that in her young career, her gender has never been an issue. Stooksbury's experience is a testament to the efforts of

the women who served before her. Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes, Naval Consolidated Brig - Charleston deputy director, prisoner management, brought the warrior ethos of the U.S. Marines to the panel. "All of my career, I've fought alongside Marines," said Barnes. "Not the males, not the women, but all Marines. The one to my right and left." Barnes added the respect of all service members is paramount. Chief Petty Officer Andrea Navarro, NAVCONBRIG Charleston parole and release leading chief petty officer, represented the Navy and offered advice to all service members. "Find a mentor and set goals," said the 19-year veteran NCO. "Find your place to make an impact." "Be proud to be a woman," said Lt. Col. Demetria Walker, 1189th Transportation Brigade commander in closing remarks. "Be proud of what we've done and what we've contributed to this nation."

AF leaders: End sequestration or lose tomorrow’s fight

WASHINGTON – The devastating effects of continued sequestration-level funding were the topic of discussion during a House Armed Services Committee hearing with the senior leaders of all military branches March 17. “I believe sequestration is going to place American lives at greater risk both at home and abroad,” said Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James. “In fact, if sequestration remains the law of the land, we will not, in the United States Air Force, simultaneously be able to defeat an adversary in one part of the world, deny a second adversary the objectives they seek in a second part of the world, as well as defend the homeland. That, of course, is our national strategy, and I’m telling you we won’t be able to do it under sequestration.” The service secretaries and chiefs were asked by members of the committee to “speak plainly” about the strain of sequestration-level funding and the future impacts it will have. “The fundamental issue is going to be that the American people cannot expect their military to do what we’ve been asked to do in the past, if we stay at these funding levels,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III. While all services are seeking different funding levels to

invest in different areas, they all agree these levels will only help maintain the current commitments and requirements of the U.S. military. The Air Force acknowledged these levels are still less than ideal, but will help to repair the damage already caused by sequestration. “Here’s a shocking statistic, I think,” James said. “More than half of our combat air forces are not sufficiently ready today for a high-end fight – meaning a fight in which the enemy has the capacity to shoot back at you, to shoot you down, to interfere with you through integrated air defenses and the like. More than half of our forces are not sufficiently ready for such a fight.” Even with the requested additional $10 billion, it will still take the Air Force eight to 10 years to recover that readiness, Welsh said. The Air Force also has requested to retire the A10 Thunderbolt II and slow the growth of military compensation in the proposed budget. “We know these are not popular decisions or popular choices,” James said. “But we ask you to keep in mind that, if you don’t like these choices, hold on to your hats because under sequestration it gets uglier and uglier and uglier. For example, under sequestration, our Air Force would not only have to retire the A-10 as well as slow the growth in military compensation, but in addition, we would be facing the following actions: divest

the U-2, the Global Hawk Block 40, and the KC-10 (Extender) fleets. We would have to reduce our combat air patrols – our Reapers and our Predators – up to 10 orbits. We would defer 14 F-35 (Lightning II’s), which would drive up the costs. We would cancel the adaptive engine program, and then we would have to reduce our investments in space and cyber and nuclear and science and technology and readiness and people.” The panel of witnesses was asked to break down the overall effects of sequestration in a simple, digestible explanation. “When you hear terms like ‘high risk’ or ‘significant risk’ come from a military leader, you should translate that as ‘not guaranteed success,’ because that’s what it means to us,” Welsh said. A U.S. military not able to guarantee the success of its endeavors fails to meet the National Security Strategy, and ultimately becomes irrelevant and ineffective. “Our National Security Strategy requires that we be able to do three very important things in near simultaneous fashion. We cannot do them in that sort of fashion under sequestration,” James said. “I worry that we will have Airmen who will needlessly die and become injured. I worry that we will be slower to respond. Ultimately we could lose in trying to reach our objectives.” She explained with the constant strain of sequestrationlevel funding, ‘something’s got to give.’ “I think everything is threatened under sequestration,” James said. “And most of all I fear that American lives would be at risk. I just hope and pray it doesn’t take a catastrophe in this country to wake up.”

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill – Mobility Airmen, In my last letter to you, I asked you to call "time out" and re-evaluate how we can safely accomplish our local and global mission. Since then, our wings have held safety down days and the feedback I have received from your leadership has been very positive. We are off to a good start, now I challenge you to continue to maintain that momentum. Safety is a marathon, not a sprint. With that in mind, a regular

focus on basic airmanship, personal discipline, and workplace safety must to be part of your daily routine. The stakes are simply too high for you to accept anything less. You are central to mission success. Simply being vigilant, using common sense, and having the courage to speak up when something is not right can break the chain of events that could lead to an accident. You can prevent a fellow Airman from getting hurt or worse due to an avoidable mishap. As I have said before, I take safety very seriously and I expect you to take it seriously too. The lower the mishap rate, the higher our combat capa-

bility and the probability of successful mission accomplishment. Safety is a force multiplier. Practice it every day and it becomes habit. Airmen at every level have the responsibility and the authority to ensure the mission is conducted safely and responsibly. Programs and processes are in-place to assist you when it comes time to make the safe call. I empower you to speak up when you see something that puts you, your teammates, or the mission at unnecessary risk. We will never turn a blind eye to your concerns. The Military Common Core

In an effort to better prepare our youth for success after high school, many states are adopting what are known as the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core focuses on developing critical-thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills in the areas of mathematics and English. The intent is a more developed, wellrounded generation ready to tackle the rigors of college, career and life. Our five branches of military service also teach a Common Core curriculum. Through daily lessons mentoring, on-the-job training and other interactions - leaders instill a few basic tenets that serve as the foundation for success. We know them more commonly as our Core Values. The Army has seven Core Values, whereas the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force each have three Core Values. Add the 14 Marine Corps Leadership Traits and you have the five Services' Common Core. Over the last few years, I was assigned to two joint bases, graduated from the Naval War College, worked at the Pentagon and deployed as part of a joint task force. These assignments, as well as several deployments in support of our sister services, enabled me to witness firsthand all five Services'

Woman’s History Month: Rosie the Riveter and me

WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. – As we recognize Women's History Month this March, I am struck by the thought that heroes and role models do not have to be one single person but, in fact, can be several people. For me, this truth is especially relevant. During World War II, many women opted to take on male dominated trades to support their families while their husbands fought in the war. This was a stark change from an era in which women typically held a position as housewives. It was during this time that "Rosie the Riveter" was born. In 1942, Veronica Foster, who had in the previous year become the face of Canadian women in the war effort as "Ronnie the Bren Gun Girl," donned the red bandana and rolled up her sleeves for Canada's neighbors to the south. "Rosie the Riveter," as she was known in the U.S., was soon the iconic image of women entering the workplace and taking up industrial jobs in support of their nation. Originally, it was meant to represent the millions of women employed at shipyards and manufacturing plants who were developing the nation's military arsenal and assembling war supplies. The poster itself evolved into a multi-dimensional inspiration. Shortly thereafter, Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb wrote a song in tribute to Rosie, which became very popular.

She's making history, Working for victory Rosie the Riveter" Even today, Rosie's signature expression and inherent strength are an inspiration to millions of Americans, myself included. I first learned about Rosie when I was seven. My mom handed me a magazine to look through and I saw the bright yellow and blue background overlaid with a girl showing her muscles. I was so intrigued by the girl in the red polka-dot bandana. From that moment on, I constantly asked my parents who she was, what she did and why she did it. I wanted to be exactly like her when I grew up. I pushed myself hard in high school. During those years, we learned my mother had brain cancer, while my father's health would go from bad to worse. I needed to learn to support myself in any and every way possible. I needed to be independent. I applied myself at school, extra-curricular activities and several different jobs. My parents signed the papers for me to enter the Air Force at the age of 17. Three weeks after I graduated high school, I was on a plane headed to San Antonio, Texas, for basic military training. Although I do not get my hands dirty on an assembly line every day the way Rosie did, I still pull my hair back tight and use my hands to get the job done for our military and to provide for my family.

Every time I felt I could not do something, whether in BMT or at my duty station, I remembered the millions of women who rose above and conquered what others thought they could not. My mother passed away while I was at my first duty station and shortly after that my father passed. During those times, I kept a positive attitude. I needed to; it was who I was and who I needed to be. I had a can-do attitude and knew I was not alone. Thinking of Rosie helped me get back up on my feet and continue to do good things with my life and become a better Airman, a better me. I am a single mother of two children, full-time student and a military career woman. I give 100 percent in every aspect in my life. I am a real life Rosie. I have a tattoo of Rosie on my right arm as a symbol of how I became who I am today. Rosie taught me that all people, not just women, can do anything they want as long as they set their mind to it – and history shows that. World War II represented a major turning point for women as they eagerly supported the war effort. The long-term significance of the change brought about by the war provided the foundation for the contemporary women's movement. Although women have made tremendous progress during the past 50 years, Rosie the Riveter still stands as a beacon of inspiration and determination. The "We Can Do It" poster means so much to women in America – a symbol that illustrates both a proud legacy and the challenges they will continue to face and conquer in the future.

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – During the 1900s, answering phone calls, maintaining records and providing minor health care were some of few roles women who served in the military were permitted to fill. Jobs left open because men left for war, gave women the opportunity to step up and volunteer on the home front. A century later, women across the Department of Defense carry responsibilities from maintaining multi-million-dollar aircraft, leading troops through battlefields and serving in higher leadership positions. Women's History Month honors the hard work and contributions made in the past and present. "Those women paved the way for me to be able to serve as a United States Air Force firefighter," said Senior Airman Chelsea Westfall, a 31st Civil Engineer firefighter. "Because of them, I can come to work and feel like I belong. Women are no longer seen as the outsiders." Knowing the efforts of women in the past allow for today's women to prevail and make their own history, not defined by their gender. "We celebrate Women's History Month to remember the struggles women went through to get the equalities we have today," said Chief Master Sgt. Dorothy Olson, the 31st Operations Group chief. "We have achieved what our ancestors worked so hard for."

Today, in the U.S. military, there aren't many jobs women cannot volunteer for. Serving as a testament to this, John McHugh, the secretary of the Army, announced that women, for the first time, will be eligible to participate in U.S. Army Ranger School. "Physically, there may be things that women might not be able to do," Olson said. "But technically or academically, we are the same. The Air Force offers everyone the same opportunities. That's the best part about being in the military -- no one has to worry about whether or not a woman will be able to accomplish a task." Individuals like Col. Linda McTague, the first female fighter squadron commander and the Honorable Sheila Widnall, the first appointed secretary of the Air Force, have led by example and proven women can perform in non-traditional jobs. Technical careers, equal pay and voting rights were merely dreams for women in the past, but now those dreams are constitutional rights. "If you're a technical sergeant, you get paid as a technical sergeant. If you want to make chief master sergeant during your career, with hard work, you are eligible to make chief," Olson said.

According to the Air Force Personnel Center, more than 58,000 women serve in the U.S. Air Force. They have the opportunity to ensure the empowerment given to them is carried on to the next generation. "In an ideal world, people wouldn't focus on our gender, rather how we can be better together," Westfall said. "We go through the same training as men. If I'm wearing a duty badge on my uniform, you should know without hesitation that I belong. We are strong women who fought to be here and we aren't going anywhere."

eDIVO mobile app for U.S. Navy DIVOs and CPOs now available

WASHINGTON – The Navy launched a new app March 11 named eDIVO, designed to provide junior officers and chief petty officers with quick access to information and resources all conveniently located within one mobile application. The eDIVO app is the creation of two junior officers, Lt. Charlie Hymen and Lt. John Harry, who were frustrated with the arduous task of sifting through numerous websites and documents in search of military guidance. Today, their idea and determination has led to the eDIVO app, developed by the Navy and now available for free in the App Store and Google Play Store. The eDIVO app aggregates publicly available information providing quick access to more than 44 documents and 8,300 pages of information in one convenient place significantly decreasing the amount of time it takes to search for frequently needed information. In addition, the eDIVO app works disconnected thus enabling use anywhere, whether ashore or afloat. "The basic concept was to design a mobile app to help division officers and chief petty officers with their day-to-day management of personnel and divisional affairs, as well as give them the tools to succeed as effective leaders," said Hymen. "Actually seeing our app turn into a reality is very fulfilling." "We are thrilled to see this app launched today in both the Apple and Android platforms because we understand firsthand how this product will make life easier for the division officer," said Harry. eDIVO is a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) tool available

for smartphones and tablets, and allows the division officers to find applicable information such as basic military requirements, evaluation writing, sexual assault and harassment, legal issues, enlisted advancement, equal opportunity, and navigation basics. It is designed to help DIVOs take the appropriate steps when faced with typical situations they encounter day-to-day. Beta testers of eDIVO have given the app positive reviews. Lt. j.g. David Galiyas, assistant plans and policies officer, Amphibious Squadron (COMPHIBRON) 6 said, "Instead of spending countless hours searching for instructions, forms and other essential administration, division officers have all of the necessary tools at their fingertips, and can spend more time leading and developing their Sailors. I can't stress enough how much of a positive impact eDIVO will have on the Surface Navy." Also included with the app is a Rules of the Road quiz that includes a question bank of more than 1200 questions (and answers) ensuring that those standing watch are equipped with the resources and training they need to keep their ships safe. Lt. j.g. Hans Lauzen, eDIVO tester and combat information center officer, USS Essex (LHD 2) stated, "eDIVO revolutionizes the way a DIVO can work, and brings being a naval officer into the 21st century. Being able to access key publications, helpful tips, and Rules of the Road quizzes from my phone, I am able to immediately make an impact within my division. JB Charleston celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday

The Joint Base Charleston Libraries observed the birthday of the famous American children's writer, Dr. Seuss, in March with two celebrations for military members and their families, dedicated to remembering the wonders of his work. More than 180 fans of all ages came out for the celebrations, with the Air Base Library hosting an event March 1, 2015 and the Weapons Station Library holding one March 5, 2015. Traditionally, the event is celebrated at libraries and schools around the world during the month of March to recognize the author's birthday, March 2, 1904. The celebrations provide an opportunity to enjoy books that have thrilled and entertained readers for decades. The JB Charleston Libraries events included songs, a Dr. Seuss story time, games, crafts and birthday cupcakes. Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 also made an appearance at both programs. "The program was a huge success and everyone involved had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday, his books and memorable characters," said Angela Aschenbrenner, JB Charleston Libraries director. MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Pay and Personnel Administrative Support System (PASS) program has created more than 30 standard operating procedures (SOP) to help Sailors perform their day-to-day personnel activities like travel claims and updating records Navy administrators said recently. The SOPs are accessed through the Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (MPT&E) intranet on any command access card-enabled computer. A fact sheet is available to show you how to access the SOPs as part of Navy Personnel Command's Plain Talk series at www.npc.navy.mil/career/toolbox/Pages/Pl ainTalk(series).aspx. "Accurate records really start and end with Sailors. We have had some travel claims taking longer to process than we like lately," said Senior Chief Personnel Specialist (SW/AW) Paul A. Smith II, Performance Management Branch, Pay and

Personnel Management Division, Navy Personnel Command. "We have created a checklist that Sailors can print out prior to their permanent-change-of-station travel, stick it in a plastic bag or envelope and take with them. If they take everything on the checklist, put it in the bag and give it to their command pass coordinator (CPC) at the other end, they should have no problems getting their travel claim settled quickly." Travel claims are just one of the many things covered by the SOPs, other subjects include special pays, basic housing allowance, fleet reserve and retirement requests, updating emergency data and transfers to mention a few. "The CPC exists to support the Sailor, and Sailors can educate themselves and help their CPCs at the same time by knowing what they need to do in order to get processes done," said Smith. Psychological Health Program offers Reservists a place to find help By Staff Sgt. William A. O'Brien Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs

The Air Force Reserve Psychological Health Program offers short-term psychological treatment to Reservists in need of assistance. The first of these positions was established at Joint Base Charleston and is run by Regan Morris, a licensed psychologist with more than 30 years of experience in her field. Today she's the 315th Airlift Wing director of psychological health. "They had mental health treatment on the active duty Air Force side but the Air Force Reserve didn't have that option until this program was started in 2012," said Morris. "Due to the up-tempo deployment frequency of Reservists during the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, more Reserve units were experiencing combat. That is why the decision to establish this program was made." The goal of the Air Force Reserve Psychological Health Program is to identify potential, short-term issues before they grow into larger problems. There are currently about 20 reserve wings offering this program. "Two thirds of my job is prevention," said Morris. "I do early intervention; somebody could come to me during their UTA weekend. I work on the weekends, so I'm available to help people in crisis situations, to help people who are

stressed out." To help units learn about how to deal with stress, Morris hosts squadron training sessions during commander's calls to teach ways to self-identify excessive stress as well as recognizing stress in their colleagues. "I teach early identification methods for yourself as well as your co-workers. To help people who may be starting to have problems, I teach them about places where they can go to get help within their communities." Morris teaches those who come to her about the options they have when they're on active duty status as well as helping them find resources when they're not in duty status. "I'm licensed, I can evaluate somebody while they are in status and I can help people when they're not in status ensuring they're able to get the proper clinical services they need," said Morris. While Morris' primary job is prevention, she is able to meet with Reservists on a limited basis to work through short-term problems. "I can provide up to eight sessions for non-long-term problems. A long-term diagnosable issue requires the assistance available at a comprehensive mental health facility," said Morris. "I serve a different purpose. I try to intervene before an issue becomes a full-blown problem. If somebody needs long-term treatment, I will work with them to find an appro-

priate course of treatment." When traumatic issues happen with the wing, Morris is also tasked with providing grief counseling to those affected. "In a stressful situation, people are eligible for up to four non-documented counseling sessions," said Morris. "Everybody deals with traumatic situations differently and I am able to be here to help see them through it." According to Morris, part of her therapy is the environment she creates around her patients. "I set up the room in a very specific way. I want to create a very calming atmosphere for people. A place where they can breathe and slow their thoughts down. The room has muted tones to create calmness. I also have a water fountain to create a bit of white noise so nobody from the outside can hear what we discuss. I have pictures of my dad who was in the military so they can see that, while I may not have been in the service, I can relate to them." Morris said the success she had in establishing the program is related directly to the care and support she received from her supervisor. "Colonel Fontenella has been there for me and so supportive since the day I got here. From being understanding and allowing me time off when I experienced my own losses, to supporting me in how I decorated the room, he has meant so much to me in the time we have worked together."

VA eliminates net worth as health care eligibility factor From VA Office of Public Affairs

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs is updating the way it determines eligibility for VA health care, a change that will result in more Veterans having access to the health care benefits they’ve earned and deserve. Effective 2015, VA eliminated the use of net worth as a determining factor for both health care programs and copayment responsibilities. This change makes VA health care benefits more accessible to lower-income Veterans and brings VA policies in line with Secretary Robert A. McDonald’s MyVA initiative which reorients VA around Veterans’ needs. “Everything that we do and every decision we make has to

be focused on the Veterans we serve,” said VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald. “We are working every day to earn their trust. Changing the way we determine eligibility to make the process easier for Veterans is part of our promise to our Veterans.” Instead of combining the sum of Veterans’ income with their assets to determine eligibility for medical care and copayment obligations, VA will now only consider a Veteran’s gross household income and deductible expenses from the previous year. Elimination of the consideration of net worth for VA health care enrollment means that certain lowerincome, non-service-connected Veterans will have less out-ofpocket costs. Over a 5-year period, it is estimated that 190,000 Veterans will become eligible for reduced costs of their health

care services. In March 2014, VA eliminated the annual requirement for updated financial information. VA now uses information from the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration to automatically match individual Veterans’ income information which reduces the burden on Veterans to keep their healthcare eligibility up to date. That change better aligned VA’s health care financial assessment program with other federal health care organizations. The Prison Rape Elimination Act was passed in 2003. The law created the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission and charged it with developing standards for the elimination of sexual abuse in confinement. The Department of Defense is committed to the prevention, detection, and response to sexual abuse and sexual harassment in military correctional facilities per PREA standards. Prisoners who are victims of sexual abuse are eligible to receive the services of a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator and SAPR Victim Advocates, and other support and advocacy services. Prisoners, however, do not

have a Restricted Reporting option since PREA requires a criminal investigation for every incident of sexual abuse, including anonymous and third-party reports. All prisoners have two reporting options: (1) an Unrestricted Report to disclose to law enforcement and command officials, without requesting confidentiality, that he or she is the victim of a sexual abuse; and (2) an Anonymous Report, for victims of sexual abuse who desire to disclose the allegation privately to SARCs and not have their identity disclosed to the investigators. All prisoners are currently able to receive confidential crisis intervention services through the DoD Safe Helpline.

Waking up on my 42nd Anniversary last week, I looked at my wife and thought of my old sergeant major. CSM Chuck Smith was in his last assignment and he and his wife Roberta were looking for a quiet place to settle down in retirement but Chuck’s mother was in the advance stages of Alzheimer’s. Rather than put her in a home, they cared for her themselves all

while dealing with their responsibilities of leadership and the weight of watching someone they loved slip further and further away. Yet, they never gave in to despair or gave up on each other. Chuck’s Mom died just before he retired. As they walked away from their last ceremony, Chuck and Roberta reached out and took each other’s hand. When all is said and done, regardless of the rank achieved, the only question is who’ll hold your hand when you walk into the twilight?

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. – Many Airmen count their family members among the most influential people in their lives. For Senior Airman David Clauson, this is especially true: the 22nd Aerospace Medical Squadron medical technician's father is an Air Force veteran, three of his five brothers are serving or have served as Airmen, and both of his grandfathers and a great-grandfather also wore the Air Force uniform. This pride in service isn't exclusive to the men in the Clauson family, though. David's mother, Capt. Dawn Clauson, is an active duty nurse assigned to the 99th Medical Operations Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. "She was definitely part of what influenced me to join the military," said David. "She motivated me in my career and has shown me that if she can make it through deployments and deal with the stresses of being active duty, I can do it myself." While Dawn was completing her bachelor's degree in nursing in 2005, she frequently received recruitment letters from the Army, Navy and Air Force. "They all stated age was not an issue," she

said. "I'm a very healthy person, so I asked my two sons who were in the Air Force at the time what they thought about it." Her sons told her she would enjoy the medical side of the Air Force and encouraged her to join. Dawn answered the call to duty and commissioned in June 2006 at the age of 45 years old. David wanted to follow in the footsteps of his family members, and he ended up enlisting in 2011, where he was sworn in by none other than his own mother. "He is so proud that he made me come to [his basic training] graduation in uniform," said Dawn. The heritage passed down from the time her father and grandfather spent in the Air Force pushed Dawn to not only be patriotic in her own right, but to inspire her children. "[My husband] Rick and I believe everyone would gain through at least one term of active duty service," she said. "We encouraged them all to serve their country." David is currently training to become an independent duty medical technician, and he credits much of his determination to his mother. "Not only has she taught me life lessons when I was child, she's continuing to do so today through her own Air Force career," he said. "It brings me a great amount of pride to serve alongside my mother."

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. – Air Mobility Command released the results of its accident investigation board regarding a Dec. 1, 2014, mid-air collision near Pope Army Airfield, Fort Bragg, N.C. A C-130H assigned to the 440th Airlift Wing (Air Force Reserve Command), and a C-27J assigned to the Army Special Operations Command Flight Company, both at Pope Army Airfield, collided approximately 8 miles south of Mackall AAF, N.C. Both aircraft declared emergencies and landed safely, the C-27 at Mackall AAF and the C-130 at Pope AAF. There were no injuries to the eight C130 crewmembers or the five C-27 crewmembers. The investigation identified several relevant human factors in the mishap: a breakdown in visual scan resulting in insufficient clearing of the aircraft flight path by both aircrews; both aircrews were over-reliant on Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems to alert them to potential traffic conflicts; and both aircrews exhibited complacency due to the routine nature of the mission profiles, despite the inherent risk associated with night, lowlevel visual flight rules operations on night vision goggles. The AIB report is the result of an investigation that included witness testimony; input from technical experts; review of planning, maintenance, and training records; and review for compliance with Air Force directives and guidance.
