COMMENTARY
President Barack Obama
WASHINGTON – I send greetings to all those celebrating the 237th birthday of the United States Navy. America's growth from a string of 13 colonies to a beacon of freedom and democracy would not have been possible without the generations of patriots who stepped forward to defend our nation and the principles for which we stand. The members of the United States Navy are part of this unbroken chain of heroism, protecting and preserving our way of life since the earliest days of our Union. Our Sailors have performed brilliantly in every mission given to them - from Coral Sea to Midway to Guadalcanal; from Iwo Jima to Inchon; from the Mekong Delta and Desert Storm to Baghdad and Kabul. They continue to
answer our nation's call as a global force for good, safeguarding vast oceans, bringing justice to terrorists around the world, and providing assistance during times of humanitarian crisis. At sea, on land, and in the air, our brave men and women of the United States Navy, like all who wear the uniform of our country, represent what is best about America. We are forever indebted to these selfless heroes. As President, I have no higher honor than serving as Commander in Chief, and on behalf of a grateful nation, I salute the United States Navy for 237 years of service. May God bless and protect you and your families, and may God bless the United States of America. Barack Obama
MCPON sends 237th Navy birthday message
WASHINGTON – Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens’ Navy birthday mMessage to the fleet:
Shipmates and Navy families, As we honor the 237th birthday of the United States Navy, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all Sailors, civilians and family members for your service and dedication to our great Navy. One of the primary reasons I believe our Navy is so great is because of the way we treat each other with decency and respect and how we con-
duct ourselves professionally. This is something that we should all actively strive to do every day. It adds value, influences those around us in a positive way, and is truly important to our primary mission of warfighting. I personally look to our history as a roadmap and a guide to help us stay the course and aid us in navigating through the challenges we face today. It is these challenges that create the opportunities that allow us to grow as Sailors, citizens and leaders. The Navy's birthday gives us a chance to think about the things that we are doing today and how we are creating history
from which future generations can draw courage. In everything that we do, we need to provide future generations something to be proud of and celebrate. This is our time and we are part of a new history. We must seize the day, because if we don't, who will? To all of our Sailors and Navy families, I would like to wish you a very happy birthday as we celebrate 237 years of excellence and service to our great Navy. All the Best! Very Respectfully, MCPON
Energy Action Month - “I am Air Force Energy”
Commentary by Lt. Gen. Robert Allardice Air Mobility Command Vice Commander
SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. – October is Energy Action Month. This year's theme is "I am Air Force Energy." As the theme implies, whether you are a military member, civilian or contractor, your ideas are vital to improving efficiency. In the last six years, Airmen in Air Mobility Command have reduced aviation fuel consumption four percent, ground fuel consumption six percent and facility energy intensity 18 percent. Some of these accomplishments, which many of you contributed to, are described below. Air Mobility Command Airmen reduced aviation fuel consumption four percent since 2006 by eliminating unnecessary cargo, flying more fuel efficient routes, cleaning engines regularly and even loading cargo to balance aircraft weight. Initiatives like these saved the Air Force $165 million and allowed us to transport 24 percent more cargo while using five percent less fuel. Since 2003, AMC Airmen have reduced facility energy intensity 18 percent by upgrading lighting with energy efficient technology such as fluorescent and LED, improving insulation around windows and doors, and modernizing heating and air conditioning systems. These efforts reduced future utility bills while improving the quality of the AMC work environment. A recent example of Mobility Airmen embrac-
ing "Air Force Energy" can be found in Mobility Air Forces aircrew electronic flight bags. The 21member AMC Electronic Flight Bag team sought to deliver a single automated platform, consolidating paper flight references for 18,000 aircrew members assigned to more than 100 units across five major commands. This initiative will save $5 million annually in printing costs alone and a productivity increase of 22,000 man-hours, placing an emphasis back on the mission. Moving from a paper-based electronic flight publication system to an electronic-based system not only improves operational efficiency and safety, but saves the Department of Defense significant time and money. The AMC EFB team is currently one of the three finalists vying for the 2012 Chief of Staff Team Excellence Award. The Department of Energy recognized the work of Airmen with six Federal Energy Management Program awards this year out of 15 competitive nominations submitted by the Air Force. These winners will help save the Air Force more than $289 million, including 42 million gallons of jet fuel. Two AMC winners were identified, one from Headquarters AMC and the other from the 375th Air Mobility Wing, both at Scott Air Force Base. The AMC Fuel Efficiency Office successfully implemented a mission index flying optimization tool. The software gives pilots the most energyefficient altitude and speed based on atmospheric conditions. AMC also secured funding for the
KC-135 engine upgrade and KC-10 drag clean-up fuel efficiency initiatives. These three initiatives, officials said, are projected to save the DOD $284 million over the next 10 years. Liz Toftemark, Scott AFB utility engineer and energy manager, successfully negotiated electrical contracts over the past two years that will save the Air Force $5.5 million. She helped implement energy-saving projects such as heating, cooling, lighting and window upgrades that will save $4million over the life of the projects. Through her efforts, the base library now has a reflective "cool" roof and 55 skylights which reduced electrical usage 30 percent at the facility. Additionally, Jim Shores, 22nd Operations Support Squadron short range scheduling chief, from McConnell AFB, Kan., was awarded $10,000 through the Innovative Development Employee Awareness program, for identifying a recalibration during KC-135 air refueling training missions. This recalibration will save AMC approximately $472,000 annually in fuel waste. I commend each of you who have had an impact on making our Air Force more energy efficient thus far. Now, I challenge each of you to seek even more ways to create a culture of energy awareness and to identify and follow up on energy saving initiatives so that those dollars saved can continue to enhance our nation's combat capability.
First things first: Get your degrees in order Commentary by Chief Master Sgt. David Brinkley 451st Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs
KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – In 1972, the Community College of the Air Force was established by the Air Force Chief of Staff, General John Ryan. Four years later, President Gerald Ford authorized the Air Force, by law, to confer the associate degree. The CCAF was accredited in the start of 1977 and by the spring of that same year it awarded its first Associates of Applied Science degree. This year, the CCAF is expected to award the 400,000th AAS degree since the college's establishment. This is a milestone stands as an impressive achievement for the college and a testament to the character of the men and women who make up our enlisted corps. Unfortunately, some view the CCAF as a degree mill and discount the value of the degree. Frankly, the investments toward the professional development of our own Airmen can't be matched by any corporation or any other service it's foolish to undermine the efforts of nearly half a million Airmen. Our enlisted corps is a highly-motivated, welleducated force, and the numbers back it up. According to official records as of this month, within 412,000 Airmen serving in the Air Force you will find 77,343 with associate degrees, 29,487 with a bachelor's, 5,090 master's degrees, and 88 who have reached the highest academic levels and have earned a doctorate or professional degree. As we continue to challenge our enlisted corps to chase educational goals, they will continue to reach more educational milestones; however for some the accomplishment of their AAS through the CCAF takes a backseat as they pursue their own interests. As a result, these well-meaning Airmen have their educational goals operating in reverse. How do we keep them focused on the importance of completing their CCAF first? From personal experience, I've reviewed countless Enlisted Performance Reports and award nominations that highlight a member's progress
towards a baccalaureate degree. At first glance this looks great, balancing school and work isn't easy but upon further review many have not completed their CCAF degree. This tells me the member is more focused on their personal goals than taking care of the Air Force's fundamental educational expectations. Some leaders offer guidance and encourage their subordinates to transfer their baccalaureate degree courses to CCAF so they get credit. But again, this is another step that reinforces the notion that the CCAF should be an afterthought and not at the forefront. As enlisted leaders we are charged to deliberately develop our force. In the realm of education we must focus our subordinates on the importance of attaining their CCAF degree first. This starts with properly approaching Career Development Courses with the right attitude. Upon completion of CDCs and in conjunction with on-thejob and up-grade training, members receive college credits; remind your Airmen they are in fact completing college level courses through their CDCs. It is customary to prohibit members in UGT or those who are enrolled in CDCs to simultaneously be enrolled in off-duty civilian education. We advise our Airmen that when their CDCs and UGT are complete they can then take college courses. This guidance is misleading. We should be telling our Airmen that because of the CCAF and their CDCs they are already enrolled in college and taking college courses. We have a tendency to reward our Airmen for CDC completion by allowing them to pursue their bachelor's degree. Instead, we should continue to mentor our Airmen and keep them focused on their AAS. Once the first part of their education is completed we can focus them on the other 16 semester hours of classes they need for completion of their CCAF degree. Typically Airmen will enroll in be a bachelor's degree plan to further their educational goals; however, the focus should be on accomplishing the CCAF degree requirements rather than pursuing an advanced degree from the beginning.
An Airman would be much better served if their advancement toward a BA or BS degree would be the by-product of their pursuit toward the AAS through the CCAF not vice versa. We need to remind our Airmen why CCAF accomplishment is important. Some will say that CCAF completion is important because without it a member hurts their promotion potential; but leaders need to look at the bigger picture. Individuals may only participate in CCAF degree programs designed for their Air Force occupation. Why is this? The US Air Force is the best at developing its workforce for current and future leadership and technical challenges. The 64 degree programs offered through CCAF are specifically created and tailored to address technical and leadership issues a member will encounter in their specialty. Nearly every profession requires its members to complete some type of education or certification. Our profession of arms is no different. Completion of a CCAF degree helps members progress from apprentice to journeyman and onto craftsman in their trade. Of the 64 credit hours required for the CCAF AAS, 24 are in the technical education area. These 24 hours are accomplished through technical school, OJT, UGT and the CDCs. The Air Force views the AAS as the first important step in the development of our junior enlisted corps, a step that can't be substituted with civilian academic degrees. Once Airmen complete this first and critical obligation then we can encourage them to continue and achieve other educational goals. Our force benefits by having a team of educated leaders, managers and Airmen. The road to educational excellence starts with understanding the true value of the CCAF AAS degree, accepting and tackling CDC, UGT, OJT as college level courses and not treating the completion of the CCAF AAS degree as a secondary goal, but making it our primary purpose and fulfilling the Air Force's educational expectations before seeking out further educational opportunities.

JB Charleston Command Post keeps base informed
By Airman 1st Class George Goslin Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
One group of professionals work in the center of action at Joint Base Charleston – Air Base and they are essential in making sure base operations run smoothly and effectively – the 628th Air Base Wing Command Post section. The Command Post is the primary focal point for Force Protection Condition changes, weather warning notifications, base recalls or emergency management communications. Emergency action controllers man the command post every hour of the day, every day of the week, all year long, including holidays. Each base Command Post is tailored to the mission of their base and the mission of that base’s Major Command. Specific job duties will differ between bases. “At JB Charleston, from day to day, we are mostly centered on flying operations,” said Staff Sgt. Lynette Ras, 628th ABW CP senior emergency action controller. “We are a liaison and
coordinator for all facets of the mission, from pre, during and post flight. Anything the pilots need, we can facilitate and coordinate for them, such as fuel or documents.” The operational mission of the command post may vary from base to base, but the primary mission is always the same – disseminating time critical information to the base personnel who need it. “We can receive information from the headquarters level or from specific units about a particular situation and in turn, we distribute that information to other emergency actions responders,” said Ras. The Command Post acts as a hub of information for emergency responders to keep all units informed and to give commanders up-to-date information to make critical decisions. “Our entire job is checklist-driven” said Ras. “Nothing is completely black and white. It’s just problem solving. We receive calls where we may not have all the information we need, but we follow checklists to make sure the information is distributed correctly.”
The controllers must go through extensive training to maintain their qualifications, which include a monthly-emergency actions test where controllers are required to score above 90 percent to stay certified. The test information must be memorized so the controllers are able to respond quickly to any given scenario. Only the base commander can certify each controller. “We are the commander’s point of contact,” said Ras. “We go through the monthly scenario evaluation to ensure that we’re proficient and current. He needs to know we know how to do our job.” The controllers are trained on the basics of their profession at technical school, but receive most of their training on the job at their base or command. “It’s a true testament to the skill and professionalism of these Airmen when the commander puts that level of trust into our youngest, day in and day out with that level of experience,” said Maj. Reid Wynans, 628th ABW CP chief. “We treat information as a commodity so that we can disseminate it for the benefit of the commanders.”

Survival of the Fittest: Fit to Fight By Senior Airman Dennis Sloan Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
Survival of the Fittest is a three-part series on an Airman's battle with cancer while still serving in the Air Force. This is the second installment.
A brain cancer diagnosis can send chills through the strongest of individuals, but a second diagnosis after beating brain cancer once before could bring someone to their knees. Michael Moyles, a boy with the dream of becoming a United States Air Force officer followed that dream and in 1994 commissioned in the Air Force. Unfortunately, after marrying his longtime girlfriend and earning the rank of captain, Michael was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1999. He fought through the cancer and had the tumor removed from his brain in 2001. He continued with his career in the Air Force after passing a medical board. For four years he was cancer free, but the unwelcome guest would return. On Jan. 5, 2005, Michael was informed by doctors the cancer had returned. Not only had the cancer returned, but it was much larger and more aggressive. No time to watch and wait - the cancerous tumor was engulfing Michael's entire right frontal lobe, and doctors decided they would have to remove that part of his brain. That spring, Michael would endure a right frontal lobectomy - the removal of the entire right frontal lobe - at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif. This second surgery was exactly four years later to the day of his first brain surgery and once again, Michael's wife would spend their wedding anniversary trying to hold herself together while her husband was under the knife - in the fight for his life. "This again?" asked Angela, Michael's wife. "You would think it would be easier the second time, but the mind is funny ... somehow you know what to expect, but for some reason that isn't very comforting. You know it's going to be about seven to eight hours of waiting, but you don't dare go get something to eat, drink or just walk around - you might miss something, anything! Even though you know the doctors won't possibly be out for an update during the first two to three hours, because it takes that long just to get him under anesthesia and opened up, you don't move from that chair. It's exhausting; simply exhausting." Fortunately, the surgery was successful and Michael's entire right front lobe was removed, including the cancerous tumor that had been spreading like a wildfire.
Incredibly, Michael's vital signs were just as strong after surgery as they were before surgery. Then, in a step unprecedented at Cedars-Sinai, he was moved directly from the recovery room to a regular patient room, skipping intensive care completely. Once again he was completely unaffected by the surgery and left the hospital two days later. The doctors had never seen this kind of resiliency after brain surgery. Michael considered the return of cancer as a wakeup call. He wasn't just going to beat cancer by sitting back and hoping it wouldn't show up again, he would have to fight. He knew his future rested solely in his hands. He set out on a journey to get in shape - not just physically, but mentally, emotional and spiritually. He was going to leave no ground for cancer to stand on. Not able to perform contact sports, Michael had to find something that he could safely do to prepare his body for this battle, so he decided to take up running. Not known for running, and actually not a fan of it at all, Michael set out by running 90 feet one day, then a lap around the track, then a mile and eventually more than 10 miles a day. "Basketball was always a hobby, something fun to do and a way to stay in shape," said Angela. "His new fitness regimen was on a different scale ... nothing you would ever dream possible from a two-time brain cancer survivor." Since the cancer had returned a second time, doctors at Cedars Sinai Medical Center made the decision to start chemo to prevent a third sighting. Michael underwent 12 rounds of chemotherapy and, after passing another medical review board, was still be able to serve in the Air Force. Six months after his second brain surgery, while still going through chemotherapy, Michael ran his first marathon. "It wasn't very fun or very fast, but I wanted to be clear that I'm not going to let cancer stop me from doing anything," said Michael. Michael never went a day without running while going through chemotherapy. "Michael is truly a man of God," said Angela. "God made him extremely special. There aren't many people with his drive and passion for life. When he said he was going to win this battle, he meant it and I knew it! I knew no matter how irritating his determination can be, it was a gift from God and I had to allow myself to get out of his way and let him do what he felt best to beat this ugly thing called cancer. He amazes everyone he meets, including the doctors. It's not easy being the spouse of a cancer patient. There is nothing you can do to

help, but be supportive and make sure their focus stays on the right thing. Other than that you feel helpless!" The chemotherapy took a toll on Michael. He experienced nausea, vomiting and severe fatigue. He would go through five consecutive days of chemotherapy, and then allow 23 days for his immune system to recover. Michael described it as death on two legs for a full year. Michael kept his head up and continued to work on getting in shape - mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. After 12 rounds of chemotherapy within a year and with two marathons under his belt, Michael was still cancer free. He had beaten the beast again, and did it his way. "After recovering from two surgeries and a year of chemotherapy, you could easily feel beaten down or defeated, but running marathons counters that 'defeated' feeling with total exhilaration and victory," said Michael. "I started to feel like I was really living and that the cancer wasn't going to stop me." This was devastating news for a man who had put so much effort and energy into fighting, but he stuck to his Air Force mindset - persevere through adversity, rise above all obstacles and never give up. Michael would have to go through 10 more months of chemotherapy to try and stop the growth of the tumor. Time management was the biggest issue," said Michael. The roots of her passion for jazz were planted at an early age, from the black and white keys of her grandfather's grand piano in his Atlanta home. During her childhood visits, her grandpa Joe would spend hours playing upbeat and soulful jazz tunes for Lyndsey and her sister. James "Grandpa would playJohn’s the songs of Cole Porter, Dixieland Jazz and many other old-time Island artists," said Moynihan. Island "He'd begin playing as the sun came up and I remember how wonderful it was to wake up hearing those songs." The music inspired Moynihan. At age five, she began training as a classical pianist and began singing years later. "I've always loved entertainKiawah Island ing," said Moynihan. "Singing show tunes in school was a great way to do that." Growing up, she refined her love of jazz by listening to her parent's records. The crackling vinyl albums of history's jazz greats would spin from the family phonograph, and as the needle delicately ran along the recordings, it filled the room with waves of sound that inspired her. Moynihan's first solo gig as a jazz singer came during her freshman year of college. At 19, her dreams of singing were realized at a small martini bar in Atlanta, just miles from where she first discovered her love of jazz. "I wasn't sure it was legal for me to even be there," Moynihan joked, due to her age at the time. "But, I was there, and I sang my heart out for three hours that night." The performances continued throughout her college days at Vanderbilt University. Moynihan took advantage of every opportunity she could to sing. While studying abroad in Paris during her senior year, she performed at "Les Caves," a makeshift jazz Capt. Lyndsey Moynihan performs at The Red Drum, Sept. club in the basement of a cigar 29, 2012 in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Moynihan has been perbar. The club had been used as a forming jazz music since she was five years old. bomb shelter during previous wars. As deeply rooted as jazz music was in her family, another passion had shined brightly in her life; flight. Moynihan's father was a pilot, and her mother a flight attendant, so aeronautics was as much a part of her as the music she adored. In fact, her nightly jazz performances after college were funding her flight lessons to become a pilot. "At the time, I enjoyed singing but I also enjoyed flying with my father," said Moynihan. "I guess I was just trying to figure out who I was." Moynihan's internal question of self-identity was answered during her first solo flight. As she carefully landed her aircraft onto the Georgia flight strip she was training at, she realized right then who she was. She was a pilot. She took her pilots' license into the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and also became a pilot with Delta Airlines. "When I joined the Reserve, I was flying so many missions that my aspirations as a singer started vanishing," admitted Moynihan. "For the first time in my life, I was disconnected from jazz." Although she wasn't singing in clubs, Moynihan felt that jazz was still part of her American culture and upbringing. The music she had grown up with, from soul to swing, had also instilled in her a strong sense of patriotism and she felt joining the military was her duty. And, after months of constant missions with the 315th Airlift Wing at Joint Base Charleston Air Base, S.C., her first love of music seemed like a distant memory. "Once the missions weren't as time consuming, I started listening to local jazz groups in downtown Charleston," said Moynihan. "It was upsetting for me to watch others performing. Not because they weren't good, because Charleston is full of talented musicians, but because I missed the feeling of performing in front of others. I missed jazz." With the support of her husband, Capt. Brian Moynihan, 15th Airlift Squadron, 437th Airlift Wing, C-17 pilot, Moynihan dusted off her old record collection, stepped back into the spotlight and dedicated herself as a jazz singer once again. "Music is Lyndsey's first love," said Brian. "She's been doing it since she was a child and I'm incredibly proud of her. She is a world class performer." Moynihan admits it doesn't matter if she's in front of two people or 20,000, there is always a part of her that experiences a little stage fright before a performance. In May 2008, Moynihan was part of the Air Force Reserve Band's "Caribbean Tour," and during their Puerto Rico stop, she sang in front of more than 29,000 fans. "The nerves go away once I finish the first song," said Moynihan. "That gives me a chance to get used to the crowd. After that, it's wonderful." Although for Moynihan, nothing compares to performing in the intimate setting of a small jazz club. "I dreamed of being a pilot and a jazz singer," said Moynihan. "I never gave up on my dreams and today, I can say I'm able to live them both. It's not about the fame or a record deal that inspires me to keep singing, it's the connection I have with the jazz community and the artists that have inspired me."
