"Rank doesn't matter, actions do," said Chief Master Sgt. Shawn M. Hughes, 437th Airlift Wing command chief. Hughes was appointed as the 437th AW Command Chief on 10 July 2013. Born Sean Michael Kennedy in Northern Michigan with three other siblings, Hughes's upbringing was not of the traditional type. "My mother went AWOL when I was six," said Hughes. "I was put in child protective services, along with one of my brothers." The lengthy process of finding a new home for Hughes was just starting. "After my mother left, I was moved into and out of several different foster homes before finally meeting the Hughes family," said Hughes. Even though Hughes had found a home and a new family, his brothers and sisters were spread out among three separate families. "They took me in as if I were one of their own, I was overwhelmed at how well the Hughes's treated me," said Hughes. The years passed and throughout high school, Hughes spent his summers working on a farm. "That was one of the deals, when you were old enough to work, you worked." Following high school Hughes enrolled in college. After about three years of going to school full-time and working a full-time job he decided that was not the path for him. "I was hanging with the wrong crowd," said Hughes. "I didn't have any goals, so I found myself going nowhere. I was in college just to be in college. Truth is I didn't fit in at school, I didn't fit in at work, I didn't even fit in with the wrong crowd." So Hughes decided to take another route. "After seeing one of my close friends join the Air Force I took a hard long look in the mirror and decided that I was going nowhere anytime fast if I didn't make a change as well," said Hughes. Hughes joined the Air Force May of 1987 as a boom operator on a KC-135 Stratotanker. "I had the greatest view in the Air Force," said Hughes. "It was the perfect job for me at that time." A boom operator performs in-flight refueling. Lying on their stomachs in the tail section of a Stratotanker, boom operators peer through a small window while maneuvering a refueling
boom into an awaiting aircraft thirsty for fuel. Hughes loved his job, but at the end of the day he still had other hobbies that he did to recharge so he would be his best at work. "While playing an NBA tryouts basketball game ... also known as a pick-up game during lunch at the base gym, my legs were swept out from underneath me and a loud popping noise could be heard throughout the entire gym," said Hughes. The injury left Hughes with a torn ACL and a torn meniscus leaving Hughes unable to fulfill his duties as a boom operator. "I didn't like the idea of not being able to fly in the aircraft and get the mission done, so after a hard long talk with the flight doctor I decided surgery was the only way I could return to normal," said Hughes. The four hour surgery was not the only hurdle Hughes was about to face, he would not only have to physically overcome the injury, but mentally as well. "It took me about eight years to fully recover from the injury. I held onto the injury for a long time. Every little twinge, tweak, or pinch sent me back to the doc until one day I had enough." said Hughes. "I threw my knee brace away and mentally let go of the fear that I would reinjure my knee." Hughes developed a great passion for bike riding which stemmed from his knee injury. "I've always been competitive, not against other people, but myself," said Hughes. "My internal self-challenge comes from a long standing feeling that I don't belong." Hughes took his passion for bike riding and running to a new level when he decided to take on the challenge of Iron Man Triathlons. An Iron Man Triathlon starts with a Closter phobic 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike, and ending with a grueling 26.2 mile run. "I don't think in Air Force terms when it comes to physical fitness, it is just who I am," said Hughes. "It is my lifestyle. This is how I would live whether I was in the Air Force or not." With every mountain that Hughes had to climb during his lifetime he always found a way to look at the bright side of things which has left
Chief Master Sgt. Shawn Hughes 437th Airlift Wing command chief
him with his own unique view on life. "How you do things is equally as important as what you do," said Hughes. "While you can achieve success by destroying or breaking an organization, if you can take people and raise them up rather than running them into the ground to achieve success, then you've truly done something." Hughes stated that he will retire when he wakes up and has lost motivation to go to work. That day will be when he can no longer be understood by young Airman, or when he can no longer hold a conversation with those appointed above him. "Walking into a room I would like to be known as the guy who did," said Hughes. "You get one spin on the merry-go-round," said Hughes. "One shot at life. Figure out who you are and ground yourself in that. Do the best that you can. And don't be afraid to be outstanding." With a wife and two children and more than 25 years of experience in the Air Force, Hughes stands ready to serve as the 437th AW Command Chief.

COMMENTARY
Commentary by Master Sgt. Eric Rainer 15th Airlift Squadron First Sergeant
Not too long ago there were two accountability systems called "Roll Call and Recall." For the Roll Call, you came to your work center, someone yelled out your name and you said, "Here or Present." Or if it was a Recall, your phone rang and you said “hello” and acknowledged the individual on the phone. Until recently, "communicate" meant to talk face-to-face or on the phone. But both the Net Generation, 1980 through 1989, and the iGeneration, born in the 1990s and beyond, have
turned the concept of communication upside down. Hint: "I dont tlk on th fone. txt im fb me." I'm an "old fogie or old school" and I guarantee that I can walk into any office and see someone on their smart device doing something besides their work and it bothers me. But I'm paid to think, so I have to understand that the younger generation doesn't remember a time without the constant connectivity to the world that these technologies bring. They're growing up with expectations of always being present in a social way – always being available to peers wherever they are. If your reading the this paper, you may be an "old fogie" or an "old school'er" like me. I know
that this is alarming to you, but quite honestly, you have to recognize that this is the way it is and is going to be, at least until the next new form of e-communication bursts into our world. If you supervise young Airmen, you must learn how to text or you will never "connect." To the now and up-and-coming generation, it is all about connection. So, if you ask via text "how are you doing Airman Don" and you receive AAS back, you should send back a because they are "Alive And Smiling." They’re probably AATK ("Always At The Keyboard”), but never let them ACD ("Alt Control Delete") you.
Being in a hurry gets you nowhere Commentary by Senior Airman Ashlee Galloway Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
Have you ever sped to work because you felt like you were running late? Have you ever watched the cars around you that are in such a hurry? Have you complained multiple times about the cost of gas? When you are running late for work, or trying to get to your destination quickly, you tend to speed. Rushing around, swerving in and out of cars because you feel like the person in front of you is going "too slow," when in reality they are going the speed limit. I'll be the first to admit that I have done this a time or two. But did you ever stop to think how much faster you are actually getting there? How much is that extra five to 10 miles per hour really getting you? That's the thing ... it is not getting you to your destination any faster; you are just making your trip unsafe for yourself, your family if they are in the car, and even the people around you. On top of all that, you know those gas prices you were just complaining about? Well speeding around everywhere wastes gas, it makes your gas gauge go down even faster. As stated on www.fueleconomy.gov, aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by five percent around town. While each vehi-
cle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed, gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph. You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.25 per gallon for gas. I recently started watching the cars that are rushing around everywhere. For example, in my observance, a car sped around me while I was going the speed limit, and then got right in front of me. What did that do except only allow him to get one car ahead? Then I saw this car do it again, and they accelerated down the road. Then I pull up to the next stoplight. Guess who was at the same stoplight as me, only TWO cars ahead in the other lane? You guessed it, the car that was speeding around everyone in such a hurry. And where did that person end up? That person ends up in the same spot as everyone else. I see this multiple times daily. Everywhere that you go, you will see people doing this, and what they don't realize is that they are not getting anywhere any faster. They end up at their destination at about the same time as they would have if they went the speed limit. There is a speed limit for a reason. That is so a motor vehicle does not exceed the number on the sign. If you go over this number, you are only wasting your own gas and money, and putting others in danger. According to www.nsc.org, the National Safety Council has determined by survey that drivers speed because they are in a hurry, they're inattentive to their driving, they don't
take traffic laws seriously, they don't think the laws apply to them, they don't view their driving behavior as dangerous and/or they don't expect to get caught. What does speeding result in? There are over 13,000 lives lost each year in work zone crashes and fatalities - speed was the factor in 27 percent of fatal crashes in construction and maintenance zones in 2005, unsafe school zones - compliance with lower speed limits is poor, and economic costs. The economic costs that are from speed related crashes cost society over $40 billion annually, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration, and every minute "gained" by speeding to a destination costs the United States society over $76,000. Is all of this really worth trying to get somewhere a little bit faster? In my opinion, the answer is no. If you find yourself rushing to work every day, then set your alarm five minutes earlier. If you need to get to an appointment on time, then make sure you give yourself enough time to get there. If you don't like the gas prices and feel as though they are too high, then accelerate your car a little slower instead of stepping on the gas when you are at a stoplight or stop-sign and go the correct speed. And if you go the speed limit that was set on the road, by law, then there may not be as many accidents every day, and people just might start to feel safer on the roads. This is all worth it in the long run.

New supervisor refresher course slated to kick off fiscal year 2014
By Staff Sgt. William O’Brien Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
The Supervisor Refresher Course will begin being offered by the Air Force Personnel Professional Development School at Maxwell AFB, AL in fiscal year 2014. “As the FY14 schedule indicated, the course rolled out in October 2013 and will ramp up to full operational capability by the summer of 2014,” said Darrell S. Nesbitt, 628 Force Support Squadron chief of education and training. “The School will designate particular classes for overseas student participation.” The Supervisor Refresher Course provides a refresher in civilian personnel management fundamentals and key supervisory and management competencies. “This course was designed to meet the federal mandate for follow-on supervisory education at least once every three years after completing the initial supervisory courses,” said Nesbitt. The course is open to civilian supervisors who have completed the USAF Supervisor Course, the Advanced USAF Supervisor Course and Civilian Personnel Management Course and the Military Personnel Management Course at least three years ago. Force Development Flights, in coordination with the Civilian Personnel Section, should use the Supervisory
Training Status Report to identify and notify supervisors for the course. This training will be open to 200 participants and take place at their home station. The training will primarily consist of various web-based trainings. “Live webinars will be hosted via Defense Connect Online (DCO) and other coursework – readings, videos, activities – will be completed in the Blackboard Learning Management System. Students will be assigned to teams for group activities,” said Nesbitt. “They can expect to spend approximately 4 hours per day total on coursework.
“Students are required to coordinate class work, location, and scheduling prior to the class,” he said. “Since the class is run on consecutive days, there is less flexibility for absences than in the initial supervisory courses.” For more information, contact the Air Force Personnel Professional Development School Course Support Team at DSN 493-9545/8944 or e-mail at Maxwell.ECPD.CPMC@ maxwell.af.mil. Supplying the members in the fight
By Staff Sgt. Stephenie Wade 455th Air Expeditionary Wing
BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – The 455th Expeditionary Aerial Port Squadron's mission is to move passengers and cargo in and out of Afghanistan. Normally an aerial port squadron would be broken down into five major sections, but on Camp Marmal on Forward Operating Base MazarE-Sharif 16 airmen assigned to 455th EAPS detachment two have to perform a variety of tasks daily to include passenger services, special handling, ramp services and the air terminal operations center. While Mazar-e-Sharif is primarily home to German forces and in Camp Marmal the EAPS Detachment 3 is tasked with loading and unloading every U.S. aircraft that that comes to the base. The detachment moves more than 2,600 tons of cargo and 2,200 personnel each month. "We process anywhere from one to 10 missions a day between the day and night shifts," said Staff Sgt. Garrett Ingram, 455th EAPS aerial port specialist. When a plane arrives, the 455th EAPS airmen ensure it is safely parked on the ramp and then escort passengers off. Afterwards an Airman drives a K-loader to the rear of the aircraft to unload cargo, which can include pallets or vehicles. The EAPS personnel also upload cargo to the aircraft as well. A big part of the 455 EAPS mission is integrating with joint forces on the flight line to move people and cargo is Senior Airman James Harrison, a 455th EAPS aerial port journeyman on his first deployment from Charleston AFB, S.C. "We support all the forces on Mazar-E-Sharif," said Harrison, also a native of Charleston, S.C. "We have moved cargo for the Germans, Turkish and all the U.S. service members even Coast Guard. Our mission here is important because items [people and cargo] don't really get moved without us."

Green Knights win 2103 Knights of the Round Table competition From Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
Once again the Green Knights Motorcycle Club are the victors at the 2013 Knights of the Round Table competition Oct. 17 through 20, 2103, in Charleston, S.C. The annual Knights of the Round Table Tournament is a motorcycle challenge between the Green Knights, representing military and DoD motorcyclists, Blue Knights, representing law enforcement, and Red Knights, representing the fire service members. The Competition included events such as: best costume, blacksmith challenge, farthest traveler, the joust, a slow race, a timed race, and obstacle, road kill, and best knight. The totals were tallied and determined the Green Knights won the coveted knight's scepter and will host next year's competition. "Patrick McMillian, 2013 Court Chairman,
orchestrated the event while his dedicated committee worked the details all the way down to food and lodging," said Ray Sagan, Green Knights Chapter 37 president. "Everyone who came out said it was one of the best competitions yet." Donations were accepted at the competition and $1500 was collected and donated to the Wounded Warrior project. "Any money we raised went to the wounded warrior project," said Sagan. "It is our way of giving back to the military and all of those who have been injured during their service." Aside from competing in the yearly challenge the Green Knights work to help service members improve their riding skills. "The Green Knights provide mentorship and safe riding skills to all military riders whether they are experienced or inexperienced," said Sagan.
