said Chief Petty Officer Eric Combs, JB Charleston - Naval Support Activity Galley Leading CPO. "We all had a great time," said Combs. "It was an amazing experience to be on the field with the players and an honor to present the Colors as a joint team representing all branches of the military." "First and most important, this detail shows respect for veterans from all services," said Tech. Sgt. John Hassell, 628th Force Support Squadron, JB Charleston Honor Guard noncommissioned officer in charge. "Secondly, it reminds everyone the military still fights and protects our country together, regardless of which branch they belong to." During the pregame ceremony, the stadium crowd held a moment of silence for Prisoners of War and those missing in action, and recognized veterans by hosting an on-field Oath of
Enlistment ceremony for local military members including a live video stream of troops in Afghanistan who were re-enlisting into their respective services. The ceremony was led by Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry, U.S. Marine Corps Installation East commander. A four-aircraft flyover was also conducted by the Louisiana Air National Guard 159th Fighter Wing. The National Football League is honoring veterans and active duty members of the military with its annual Salute to Service campaign. For every point scored during the NFL's 32 designated Salute to Service games, the league will donate $100 to each of its three core military, non-profit partners - Pat Tillman Foundation, United Service Organization and the Wounded Warrior Project. Joint Base Charleston Child Development Center programs continuously strive to provide the highest quality childcare for children. The program's mission is to assist military and Department of Defense civilian families in balancing the competing demands of family life and the accomplishment of the military mission. The CDCs offer full-time weekly and hourly drop-in care for children six-weeks through five-years old, Monday through Friday, for full-time working parents of active duty and DOD civilians. The centers provide nutritious meals and snacks for all children in attendance at no additional charge to parents. The curriculum is designed to support each child's developmental continuum where learning is progressive and individualized. Classroom environments are carefully planned to allow children to learn through active thinking, socializing with their peers and hands-on experiences. Staffs support children as they gain competence in problem-solving strategies, understand concepts and relationships and develop a sense of positive self-worth. Parents interested in enrolling their child are encouraged to call 9634366 at the Air Base or 764-7408 at the Weapons Station for more information. The Family Child Care Program provides a nurturing home environment for children two weeks through 12 years of age by offering parents an alternative to center-based care, as well as assisting parents working

unconventional hours with their child care needs. Far from a simple babysitting service, FCC providers must meet stringent Air Force/DOD requirements to include undergoing a comprehensive background check and completing an orientation program prior to licensing. Additionally, within the first 18 months of licensing, providers must complete 15 Air Force Training Modules equating to approximately 60 hours of training. A minimum of 24 hours training on topics such as child abuse prevention, appropriate guidance, child development and infant safe-sleep practices is also required annually. COMMENTARY
The American Veteran Commentary by Captain Mary Kim KenneyGutshall Naval Health Clinic Charleston commanding officer
Last week, I was very humbled at the invitation to be the Grand Marshal for the 2012 Veterans Day Parade hosted by the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston. The Department of Defense and VA are working very hard to ensure lasting healthcare in a seamless manner from the beginning of our active career and throughout our career as veterans. As I sat trying to think of what I would talk about during my obligatory speech before the parade kicked off, I thought of a poem that absolutely moves me every time I hear it or read it. It truly paints a picture of the reason why we decided, and continue to wear the cloth of this great nation. It was written in 1970 by an Army veteran, Charles M. Province, about a Soldier; however, the message applies to all members of the armed forces, past, present and future. It is titled, "It is the Soldier." In this eloquent poem, Province says, "It is the Soldier, not the minister, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the
mous hero in the Tomb of the Unknowns, whose presence at Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory “The official Veterans Day of all the other anonymous heroes whose recognition was last week, but valor died unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. I recognize each of you daily. I He is the old man bagging groceries at the am honored to stand alongside supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly you and honored to call you slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp, and who wishes all day long his wife were still brothers and sisters in arms. ” alive to hold him when the nightmares come. Captain Mary Kim Kenney-Gutshall He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary Naval Health Clinic Charleston commanding officer human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given others would not have to sacrifice theirs. us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the You are all guardians and serve as a sword lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician, who has given us against the darkness, and you are nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the the right to vote." And in his final verse Province wrote, "It is the finest, greatest nation ever known. The official Veterans Day recognition was last Soldier, who salutes the flag, serves beneath the week, but I recognize each of you daily. I am honflag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who ored to stand alongside you and honored to call allows the protester to burn the flag." you brothers and sisters in arms. Let us remember Province's powerful words are true. It is each to continually honor and respect those who have and every one of you that protects and preserves come before us to defend this great nation. It is liberty and freedom for this great country. these veterans who made our service possible. I would also add that a veteran is the anony-

"Airman" is enough Commentary by Capt. Nicholas Mercurio 1st Combat Camera Squadron
There is a preoccupation in today's Air Force rhetoric with the word "warrior." It begins with the Airman's Creed where, at the onset, we profess to be warrior's who have answered our nation's call. From there it pervades our collective Air Force consciousness until we reach a state of semantic satiation, a phenomenon wherein a word is used so often it loses meaning. There are cyber-warriors, intel-warriors and finance-warriors, the liberal application of the term stretching from aerial port to public affairs shop, from cockpit to classroom, until it becomes hopelessly contrived and utterly diluted. Now, perhaps I am being too harsh in my appraisal. The question as to whether or not the
word "warrior" is being watered down is debatable. However, I would submit that the larger issue centers on whether or not the word is even necessary. My point is this: Airman is enough. The term Airman carries with it enough historical heft that it should suffice on its own. An Airman is an innovator, prized for thinking outside the box, even when it is unpopular to do so. Retired Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell is the embodiment of this concept, championing air power after the conclusion of World War I despite trenchant skepticism and overt opposition. An Airman constantly forges ahead, seeking new technological advances regardless of risks and unbound by the status quo. Retired Brig. Gen. Robin Olds and his generation of jet-engine pioneers demonstrated this quality as they flew unproven aircraft with cutting-edge technology
Following the leader
Commentary by Staff Sgt. Timothy Boyer 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs
TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – It is perhaps one of the most difficult duties of an Airman, yet one which we tend not to talk about after Basic Military Training or technical training. We are taught throughout our careers how to be effective leaders, but somewhere in the focus to become effective leaders, we lose the focus on being a good follower. It is strange that being a follower tends to have a negative connotation. Without followers, many of the things that made our country successful wouldn't have occurred. There were certainly civil rights leaders who paved the way to the level of equality we enjoy today, but without people who were willing to follow those leaders, they would have been far less effective. Could you imagine talking in a history class about the One Man March that made such a huge impact? Hopefully the answer is no. As many are aware, it was a Million Man March and it was because of those who chose to follow that it
made an impact. In the same way, having good followers is critical to the Air Force mission. There are examples of this every day at Travis. The Airman who follows his technical order to ensure the maintenance he performs meets the safety standards necessary is one example. The Airman who doesn't really want to be doing the job she is in, but understands the role it plays in the bigger picture so she shows up ready to work and do what her supervision asks without complaining, is another. One of the gray areas of good followership is when and how to speak up when you may have a disagreement with your supervision. The method to navigate such a challenge varies depending on personalities, but there are some basic ideas that can be helpful. First, you have to choose your battles wisely. To do this, you must understand your part in the mission. This will guide you as you determine whether it is appropriate to make your suggestion or if it is more important to get the mission done for that moment. Second, it is important to remember that your
despite the obvious danger. An Airman is, more than anything, a professional. There is no greater example of this fact than the B-17 crews of World War II which, in full knowledge of the fact that there was a 70 percent chance they would be shot down, flew daytime, strategic-bombing raids into Germany because it was their job to do so. Airman is a term steeped in valor. It evokes the same feelings of bravery, ferocity, honor and expertise one associates with the word warrior while also bearing with it echoes of our proud service heritage. We must, as an Air Force, reclaim the word Airman, reinvigorate in it the same prestige and hold it in the same regard as did our predecessors. In doing so we will not only honor our past but secure our future as the greatest Air Force the world has ever seen.
supervisor has likely been performing the job much longer than you and has learned to be efficient based on trials and errors. Fresh ideas are great and should be shared, but do not be so tied to your idea that you are closeminded to why decisions are made. Understanding why decisions are made is one of the greatest ways to build yourself as a follower and a future leader. Third, be selective. Retired Chief Master Sgt. Roger Buck once told me what he attributed to his success. "Make a habit of keeping your mouth shut," he said. "Do this and when you have something to say, people will really listen." His point is a good one. If you make a habit of challenging everything your leaders say or do, you will eventually be shrugged off as a nuisance. However, by choosing your battles wisely, understanding why decisions are made and being silent most of the time, leadership will take you seriously when you have something to add. It has been said, that to be a good leader, you must first be a good follower. Practice being a good follower, so you can one day be the leader the Air Force needs you to be.
CDC strives for quality - continued from Page 1 Squadron FCC coordinator. "Providers are expected to meet high standards of cleanliness and safety outlined in Air Force Instruction, national fire life safe codes and accreditation standards, as well as national health and safety standards outlined in 'Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs.'" Unannounced home inspections are conducted monthly to ensure every provider consistently maintains these standards. In addition, homes are subject to five unannounced inspections annually - a comprehensive fire, safety and health inspection, a multidisciplinary team inspection conducted by parents and subject matter experts and a higher headquarters inspection. Offering the same standards in safety, developmentally appropriate equipment and individualized attention as on-base settings, these homes are affiliated with the Air Force and are required to meet all Air Force standards, as well as state and county licensing requirements. Parents can be confident that children enrolled in a FCC home are cared for in a safe, stimulating in-home environment surrounded by developmental materials and nurturing interactions that help them thrive. Providers understand the stressors associated with the military life-style and are committed to assisting families with all of their child-care needs. Many providers offer evening and weekend care as well as open their homes for children whose parents work swing or mid shifts. The Air Force Subsidy Program was implemented as a means to reduce the
shortages of some types of care (care for infants, toddlers and children with special needs) and increase the availability of care for those families unable to access center-based programs. The program partially subsidizes the weekly child care fee for parents using selected family child care spaces on or near selected Air Force bases. Program participation is voluntary for FCC providers and parents and is subject to availability of funds. To be eligible, spouses must be a full-time student (as defined by their respective college), a full-time employee or a combination of part-time student/part-time employee. Parents who enroll their child in the program are required to place their child on the CDC waiting list and acknowledge understanding their child may continue to participate in the program at a subsidized rate only so long as there is another child on the waiting list to take their child's space. Parents offered a space in the CDC may elect for their child to remain enrolled in FCC and pay the unsubsidized rate charged by their provider if there are no other children in their child's age group on the waiting list. The Family Child Care Program is a vital link in the installation's child care program and is here to stay, according to Vickers. "Our office keeps abreast of vacancies and we are available to assist parents one-on-one with their individual child care needs," said Vickers. For more information about the program or if you are interested in becoming an FCC provider, call 963-2546 for more information.

The Charleston Air Force Base is dedicated in a ceremony Nov. 13, 1953.
In March 1952, the City of Charleston signed a lease agreement with the U.S. Air Force for joint use of the city’s airport. For $1 per year, the lease allowed the Air Force to occupy all properties south and west of the Southern Railways tracks, while the city retained terminal buildings, hangars and other buildings along the north and east boundaries of the airport ... the old World War II portion of the field. Construction of base facilities began in May 1952. On June 1, 1953, the base received its current name of Charleston Air Force Base and was activated Aug. 1, 1953. Two weeks later, on Aug. 15, 1953, the arrival of 50 C-119 Flying Boxcars effective-
ly made the base operational. Although numerous construction projects were still underway, the 456th Troop Carrier Wing held a dedication ceremony Nov. 13, 1953, to open the base officially. When the Air Force submitted plans for congressional approval in 1951 to reoccupy Charleston Airport, the request was programmed for two troop carrier wings. With the 456th Troop Carrier Wing already in place, advance elements of the newly activated 1608th Air Transport Group, assigned to Military Air Transport Command (later, Military Airlift Command), first arrived in February 1954, to establish operations. One month later on March 4, 1954, the group received its first C-54 Skymaster transport.

Tis the Season, the Holiday Season!
Courtesy of the 628th Air Base Wing Safety Office
The official Air Force Holiday/Winter Safety Campaign runs from Nov. 16, 2012, to Jan. 2, 2013, focusing on travel and seasonal activities commonly associated with this time of year. This year, the Air Force's theme is "SAFE-n-SOUND, All Year Round." Are you ready? Fall has arrived marking the beginning of the holiday season. Holidays are a time for families and friends to get together, relax and enjoy each other's company. During the rush of the holiday season, safety often gets pushed aside. We need to remember safety is crucial during this time of the year, not only at work, but also during our off time. The 628th Air Base Wing Safety Office is here to remind you of a few things to keep in mind during the holidays. Cooking. A lot of cooking takes place during the holiday season; there are many opportunities for burns and scalding. Be mindful of those around you. Keep pot handles turned away from the front of the stove and always keep the oven door closed. Be especially careful with deep fat fryers and related stands, as they are notoriously unstable and prone to grease fires and splatter should unthawed meat be used. They should be located on stable ground in an area outside of general walkways and not easily accessed by small children. Decorations. Inspect all electric lights and decorations for damage or wear. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections may pose a fire or shock hazard. Always
unplug light strings before replacing bulbs or fuses. Be sure to check the rating on extension cords and do not plug in more than the recommended wattage. Use lights and decorations in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Use step stools or ladders instead of furniture when hanging decorations indoors. If you're planning to decorate outdoors, make sure that you use lights and decorations rated for outdoor use. Putting indoor-only products outside in the weather can result in electric shock and fire hazards. If hanging lights outdoors, reduce the risk of electric shock by passing up metal ladders in favor of ladders made of non-conductive materials like wood or fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Candles. Always blow out unattended candles and teach children to stay away from lit candles or fireplaces.
Travel Safety. Regardless of which means of transportation you choose, the holiday season sees a significant increase in all transportation modes and related mishaps. Vehicle mishaps are the number one killer of our military family. Below are a few things to keep in mind to makes sure you arrive at your destinations safely. • Don't drink and drive, and don't let someone else drink and drive. • Wear a seat belt every time you drive, whether you're traveling across town or across the United States, always buckle up. • Besides the typical holiday gifts, be sure to have an emergency kit in the vehicle. • Plan your trip ahead of time - whether you're using a GPS system or a traditional map, plan your travel route in advance and let friends and family know the route and your anticipated time of arrival. • Before starting your trip, make sure your vehicle is tuned up and in good shape for travel. • Be flexible with you travel plans. Take plenty of breaks and do not push yourself to meet an unrealistic schedule. Stay fresh and alert when driving. If you get tired, pull off the road into a rest area or business and get out of the car for some fresh air. • Keep your speed down. Give yourself plenty of time and distance to react to traffic around you.

437th AMXS revitalizes Dedicated Crew Chief program
Story and photos by Tech Sgt. Vernon Cunningham Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
The 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron grooms some of the most prolific C-17 maintainers and crew chiefs in the Air Mobility Command. In an incentive to further enhance their mission efficiency, a pre-existing identifier, Dedicated Crew Chief, has been brought back to the forefront of their culture. Crew chiefs are responsible for the maintenance and safety of an aircraft. They are technically proficient in most, if not all, aspects of aircraft maintenance and work with specialized maintainers to keep aircraft flying and mission capable. Dedicated Crew Chiefs are different because they are assigned to one particular aircraft. “A Dedicated Crew Chief is expected to know our particular aircraft inside and out,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Drakos, 437th AMXS crew chief. “We know the history of the aircraft and recognize patterns or nuances that are much more in depth than someone not assigned to the aircraft.” A DCC is typically a designation given to senior crew chiefs that have seen a lot, and gained enough experience to recognize issues which they have solved before, and mentor other crew chiefs on solving new issues. Drakos has been a C-17 aircraft maintainer for 15 years. During that time he has deployed to Al Udeid, Afghanistan, Iraq and Turkey. Drakos was recognized as a DCC during a ceremony June 2012. He was awarded a gray flight suit and a specially designed patch, the identifier for a DCC in the 437th AMXS. “Every aircraft at Joint Base Charleston has a DCC assigned to it,” said Drakos. “We take a lot of pride in our aircraft. Crew chiefs get a lot of tech training. All of our crew chiefs know the separation between a good crew chief and a great crew chief is the initiative to get out there and learn not just your job, but the other specialist’s jobs on your plane. The more you know of the bigger picture, the better you can identify what shape the plane is in. But ultimately, earning the identifier of DCC comes down to experience.” The 437th AMXS wants the DCC program to assist their current efforts to mold future DCCs, excellent crew chiefs and maintainers. “We wanted the ceremony and uniforms to revitalize the DCC program,” said Master Sgt. William Henke, 437th AMXS Section Chief. “We want to use the old blood to build and train the new blood.” Identifying and empowering senior technicians came with a responsibility that the DCCs are definitely willing to accept. “There are great Airmen in the squadron,” said Drakos. “As an noncommissioned officer, I can look at our Airmen and truly believe that I am very lucky to work with these great Airmen. “The Airmen are definitely the true backbone of this flightline. They are out here getting their hands dirty. My job now is to take all my knowledge and pass the torch on so they may do the job and then pass it on to following generations.” The men and women who mainting the 437th Airlift Wing’s C17s ensure JB Charleston’s flying mission readiness by working together, to include maintenance specialists, Aircraft Terminal Operations Center personnel, and other supporters of flightline operations. “It’s definitely a big team effort,” said Drakos. “It takes everyone out there, not just AMXS, to make it happen.”

16th AS gives tour to JROTC students

The 16th Airlift Squadron guided 34 Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps students from Ashley Ridge High School through an interactive tour of the squadron and a C-17 Nov. 7, 2012, at Joint Base Charleston – Air Base, S.C. During the tour, students learned about components of the C-17 while getting insight on the inner workings of the mobility world. In addition to the squadron and aircraft, the cadets were exposed to the different career paths offered by the Air Force. “[The tour] went really well,” said Capt. Sean Henry, 16th AS C-17 pilot. “We were able to provide insight on the Air Force Academy, ROTC, and the enlisted routes, as well as our experiences in the Air Force and our path to the C-17.”

College teams hold youth basketball clinic at JB Charleston Hoops from Home Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Ashlee Galloway Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs
Basketball players from the University of Ohio State, Marquette University and Notre Dame visited Joint Base Charleston to conduct a basketball clinic, coordinated by the non-profit organization Hoops from Home and the 628th Force Support Squadron, for military children Nov. 8, 2012, at the JB Charleston - Air Base Fitness Center. The players were in the Charleston area to participate in the second annual Carrier Classic Nov. 9 and were able to schedule the clinic between their own team practices. "I am honored the three schools would partner with Hoops from Home to provide an exceptional clinic for the children of JB Charleston," said Sean Franham, Hoops from Home founder. "There is no question the student-athletes and staffs will make this an exceptional experience for these military children. Hoops from Home is a non-profit organization providing basketball camp/clinic experience to the children of military families ages nine to 17 across the world. It provides the children with an opportunity to work with players and coaches and highlights the benefits of team sports, physical activity and commitment. During the camps, children receive coaching and training from college, NBA players, and coaches. "Being a part of something like this is really amazing," said Shelbi Honeycutt, from the women's Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team. "It is nice knowing that this many kids care about watching us and learning from us and what we do." "I was so excited to come here," said Lauren Moore, granddaughter of Vietnam veteran James Hill. "The basketball players are so tall! I thought they would have to duck through the door to come in!" Many of the military children have grown up in one-parent homes due to deployments. Hoops from Home is designed to help these children by providing role models, a person to take the time to teach a child how to properly shoot and educate him or her on the art of team building. to, especially if someone has a parent deployed," said Joseph Chavez, son of Tech. Sgt. Lucinda Chavez from the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron. "I really enjoyed being here." The camp began with the six to seven-foot tall basketball players leading the children in warm-up drills similar to those performed during college basketball practices, such as the jump-stop drill, high-knees drill and sprint drills.
Following the warm-ups, participants engaged in individual skill development stations designed to teach and enhance basketball fundamentals like shooting, rebounding, passing and dribbling. "It was really nice participating in the Hoops from Home clinic," said Steve Taylor Jr., from Marquette University. We don't get to participate in something like this that often."
