Chapter 1
2010 1.1
January
2009 to 2010 (2010-01-01 18:41)

Co-de-iT website launch 01012010 (2010-01-01 22:08)
[1] I’m very happy to announce that with [2]Davide Del Giudice and [3]Alessio Erioli we are starting a new adventure called Co-de-iT. Co-de-iT is a connectivity HUB for computation, design, research & teaching in architecture. Project development and consultancy happen here, both first person by our team members or by building communication with specific required knowledge subjects, bridging different fields to the project. Co-de-iT is also configured as a HUB that means to operate as a catalyzer in the architectural process to trigger and engage (both conceptually and technically) levels of complexity and differentiation as an evolved answer to project instances that range from conceptual design to personalized fabrication. Co-de-iT try to promote in Italy, but not only, events and workshops about digital tools and generative methodology into architectural and design process.
clicità temporale (condizioni critiche come i cicli notte/giorno nelle zone desertiche). Quota d’iscrizione (max 16 posti) : ¬ 400 + IVA - la quota non comprende vitto e alloggio Luogo : Pentacom - Via Petroni 18/4, Bologna Orario : 10.00-18.00. 3 years of DigitAG& [pdf ebook] (2010-04-06 10:30)
Grazie a tutti! Andrea [2]link al PDF 37

[1] ”The Digital Fabrication (Dfab) in Architecture studio Tutor: Assist. Prof. Shinya OKUDA The Dfab in Architecture studio will introduce advanced Design to Fabrication flow, such as 3D modeling, Simulation, Digital Fabrication and Physical assembly and testing. It will explore one of the most significant and latest design and fabrication shifts in contemporary construction industry. The studio will commence with workshop based hands-on exercise with 3D printer, Laser engraver and CNC router. Precedent architectural case studies will be discussed to illustrate the concept. Individual design projects will be followed to apply the Dfab approach into actual context, while coping with site, programmatic, structural and environmental constraints. Rigorous works on simultaneous digital modeling and physical fabrication will be demanded. Key outputs will be established design to fabrication flow, individual large-scale digitally fabricated architectural models and relevant 2D drawings and diagrams.” [2]Link

supermanoeuvre (2010-05-05 10:33)
[1] ”SUPERMANOEUVRE is an architectural practice that sees computation as a means of opportunistically collaborating with the heterogeneity and flux of social, cultural and ecological substrates. Employing both genetic and phenotypical strategies of formation in which multiple intelligences and behaviours compete for the gift of instantiation, supermanoeuvre seeks to move beyond the diagram as the dominant of architectural understanding. The resulting complex and adaptive morphologies achieve their definition performatively as the emergent outcome of highly specific architectural concerns embedded within generating rulesets. The practice was co-founded in 2006 by Dave Pigram [New York] and Iain Maxwell [London] as a collaborative studio through which contemporary architectures may be engaged. This blog is intended as a active repository of knowledge pertaining to contemporary architectural resources, techniques and theory. It is an open platform intended for not only our collaborators, peers and students, but also for the greater design community.” Co-de-iT - Conditional Proliferations - GH Workshop - Roma (2010-05-07 10:48)
[1] Conditional Proliferations Grasshopper workshop Level I parametric & generative design Roma - 07-11 giugno 2010 [.]
Apomechanes 2010 studio - seminar & workshop (2010-05-11 09:09)
[1] Apomechanes 2010 studio [seminar and workshop] will be held from the 19th of July till the 6th of August. 48
Apomechanes is an intensive 3-week computational design studio held each summer in Athens, Greece. The studio is devoted to furthering techniques and concepts of algorithmic processes as means for design and fabrication. Apomechanes brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds and fields of study to discuss, exchange and collaborate on projects that investigate modes of algorithmic and machinic processes in architectural design. At present computational techniques are predominantly employed in the optimization, rationalization or surface decoration of more traditionally created wholes. This research instead focuses on the inherent potential of computation to generate space and of algorithmic procedures to engage self-organization in the design process. During the workshop, participants create their own custom algorithms leading to the fabrication of working full-scale prototypes appropriate to their research trajectories. Participants engage closely with computational processes in order to develop an aesthetic and intuition of complexity that resides in a balance between design intent and emergent character.

Open Generative Design (2010-05-17 09:26)
[1] Segnalo l’interessantissima iniziativa creata da [2]Sivam Krish ”Open generative Design - CAD independant Generative Design Frame Work”. ”Why CAD independent ? Generative Design works on top of CAD. There are many types of CAD tools. Different tools are good for different tasks. It is best to generate designs at a schematic level. This way schemes can used for a variety of similar design problems. They can also be used across CAD platforms. More importantly they can be shared and built upon.” ”The aim is to develop platform independent algorithms which can be used to browse through solution spaces of various parametric definitions. The algorithms will be written in Excel and special add-on will 50
be developed for each parametric modeling package.” [via Peer produced Space] [3]Link al sito [4]Link alla community 1. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8b3DosMhRWc/S_DzeJwQzkI/AAAAAAAABho/UGl2bh_Fhls/s1600/Open+Generative+Design. jpg 2. http://generativedesign.wordpress.com/ 3. http://www.opengenerativedesign.com/index.html 4. http://generativedesign.ning.com/

[1] 58
DEADLINE EXTENSION: June 25th, 2010 To apply: education@opolab.com ”Speculatis” develops a context to conceptualize the intersection of lighting systems and their possible interaction with user movement, programmatic space and morphological innovation in relationship to advanced modeling techniques and fabrication technologies. The platform of exploration intends to foster awareness on the potential of modulating relationships of light intensity with various environmental dynamic factors and their relationship to program in architectural space and landscapes at large providing an opportunity to rethink concepts of space and ambiance as generators of architectural and urban space - while learning and applying tools to fully realize them as products, objects, spaces or other entities. The workshop will be divided into 2 parts. The first part - ”machina” - will consist of seminars and practical classes addressing conceptualization, modeling and fabrication techniques for the construction of possible innovative structures of chandeliers. Both seminars and classes will approach the intersection of concepts of morphology, structure and interactivity and the capability of tuning those with several advanced modeling techniques and fabrication technologies. The second part - ”lux” - will consist of seminars and practical classes that encompass the full implementation of the interactive lighting system in the structure realized formerly in the first section. Students will learn techniques to create sensing of input and modulation of light output, explore integration of respective electronic systems in their structures and complete a final chandelier with full operational capacity. ”Machina” Saturday, July 10th - Tuesday, July 13th Introduction lecture. ”Searching as a way of life” [the quote] (2010-07-30 13:07) ”In the network economy, nine times out of ten, your fiercest competitor will not come from your own field. In turbulent times, when little is locked in, it is imperative to search as wide as possible for places where innovations erupt. Innovations increasingly interfect from other domains. A ceaseless blanket search–wide, easy, and shallow–is the only way you can be sure you will not be surprised. Don’t read trade magazines in your field; scan the magazines of other trades. Talk to anthropologists, poets, historians, artists, philosophers. Hire some 17-year-olds to work in your office. Make a habit to visit a web site 68
at random. Tune in to talk radio. Take a class in scenario making. You’ll have a much better chance at recognizing the emergence of something important if you treat these remote venues as neighbors.” [1]kevin Kelly 1. http://www.kk.org/newrules/blog/

volatile prototypes (2010-08-03 14:38)
[1] Volatile Prototypes was initiated in 2008 as a platform for design research and experimentation that embraces computational processes as a key ingredient of analysis and synthesis in design. 70
Specifically, Volatile Prototypes seeks to explore and promote the computation-enabled integration of the heterogenous information and processes taking part in the design of physical objects (such as functional parameters, material properties, organizational principles, manufacturing processes, representation issues etc.), in order to develop intuitive design environments and explore different design possibilities and prospects in spatial organization.” [2]Link al blog [3]Link al sito [4]Link ai post relativi alla tool ”StandUp” 1. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8b3DosMhRWc/TFgOX7mc74I/AAAAAAAABrM/jMgItCGEdcc/s1600/volatileprototypes.jpg 2. http://www.volatileprototypes.com/blog/ 3. http://www.volatileprototypes.com/ 4. http://www.volatileprototypes.com/projects/surfkit/

f(AA)shions | AA Visiting School Paris (2010-09-06 08:44)
[1] The workshop is open to worldwide emerging designers -in architecture and fashion design, students, recent graduates and young professionals. Our objective is the exploration of novel productions in fashion and architecture. Fashion scene today has become an ensemble of socio-morphological forces connecting people, catalyzing experimental open design. Fashion per se, with its affinity for transformation, sets a terrain of becomings, architectural identities, scenery and performance. Within the ever-changing realm of fashion, AA Paris School will foster integral dynamic qualities opening to surprising typologies intrinsic to temporal bodies, fluid matter(s), and singular proportions, morphed together onto large organic systems. Tutors: - Jorge Ayala, Director [Architect, MA Architectural Association School, Founder of [Ay]A Studio] - Alexandra Verschueren, Fashion Designer [Master in Fashion Design, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp] - Marc Fornes, Architect, AA March [March Architectural Asoociation School, Principal of THEVERYMANY] - Marco Verde, Eng, March [Assistant Professor, HYPERBODY, Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft] and others Period: 21-31 March 2011 [2]Link to website 1. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8b3DosMhRWc/TISPvDGJE7I/AAAAAAAABsk/z9Yw40vuBp8/s1600/f%28AA%29shion.jpg 2. http://aaschoolparis.tumblr.com/

[1] ”We are a multi-disciplinary conglomerate of architecture students from around the country, brought together through an appreciation for intelligent design. Our aim is to promote the knowledge and awareness of designs which are sustainable, contextually inherent, engaging and flexible through the establishment of precedent and research; we hope to advance the contemporary ideals of present architectural theory, influence approaches to design and provide a knowledge base of design exemplar. Our drive to design is passionate; our work tests notions of the current, looks to the un-discovered ( & un-tested) and strives to explore new questions of architectural design.”

15 to 20 NOVEMBER 2010 (2010-09-08 08:16)
[1] HOST// ISTITUTO NAZIONALE DI ARCHITETTURA TUTORS// LaN DIRECTORS CarloMaria Ciampoli, Luis Fraguada & Monika Wittig CNC SUPPORT// SOLIDO Filippo Moroni PROGRAM// WALLˆ2: The idea of Wall-Squared surfaces as a way of initiating explorations of complex surfaces. ITERATIVE design will be the emphasized design mode. Participants will be given a preliminary WALL and asked to design a second iteration through a controlled modification of a project parameters. Subsequent design iterations will seek to fully integrate insight gained from 1:1 scale fabrication explorations. The workshop proposes the exploration of ’digital tectonics’ whereby the emphasis is on total integration between digital modeling and fabrication at a 1:1 scale. Parametric design will be utilized in both methodology and modeling, where students will explore both associative and generative techniques that investigate variation in form and stress physical production design integration. The workshop will result in the production of full scale, digitally manufactured prototypes. Three main topics will be examined 1/ digital design theory, 2/ parametric design + modeling [RHINO, GRASSHOPPER] and 3/ digital fabrication [RHINOCAM] Each of the tutors hold different specializations within the stated aspects. The workshop will emphasize the importance of fusing the three topics, and the final outcome will consist of a fully integrated design- to-production prototypes through engagement with accessible CNC production means 3d printer, CNC routers & laser cutters. matter design (2010-09-22 16:03)
[1] ”Matter is a design collaborative studio founded by [2]brandon clifford and [3]wes mcgee. The firm has a number of ongoing preoc- cupations surrounding design as it evolves through the digital era. digital Today it is hard to imagine a world without the computer. We second this as our firm lives digitally. Our communication and process are inherently digital, while the result is physical. material matter | something that occupies space. While our world is becoming ever digitized, our ultimate passion is in making. We are invested in eliciting the potentials of means and methods of making (in the traditional sense) through a digital process. The contemporary archi- tect has many digital tools to manifest their designs laser cutters, 3d printers, waterjets, ect. We recognize that many of these technolo- gies have provoked their own processes of making, often times irre- spective of that materials history. interdisciplinary We invite research of various fields that could potentially inform our architectural research. collaboration Matter is constructed through conversations. No project is completed in a vacuum. While each project is directed by brandon and wes, the collaborators make each project unique in turn, matter’s pedagogical objectives are continued simultaneously as the numerous collaborators elicit variety in the work. If you are interested in a collaboration please make sure to contact us.” [4]Link al blog 1. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8b3DosMhRWc/TJoNPi5m47I/AAAAAAAABuY/tf0dDMvJVeg/s1600/matterdesign.jpg 2. http://www.matterdesignstudio.com/about/brandon-clifford/ 3. http://www.matterdesignstudio.com/about/wes-mcgee/ 4. http://www.matterdesignstudio.com/

Blog Binturong (2010-10-28 13:13)
[1] ”We are Jason Lim and Asami Takahashi of [2]Atelier Panda. We created Blog Binturong in order to share some of our thoughts, techniques and code. As designers, we are constantly inspired by the amazing work that is shared online and learn immensely from the knowledge that is freely distributed. The design world is greatly enriched by this spirit of generosity. This blog collects some of the generative code, underlying thoughts and techniques of making that goes into our work. A lot of this knowledge has been developed over the course of our design projects: some of it earned through costly trial-and-error, some of it the results of happy accidents, all of it benefiting from resources made available by other designers. This is our way of contributing knowledge back to the wider community. We hope that its contents can be useful and even inspiring to you.” I want to underline the post ”Straight to Fabrication” where they announce: ”We are working on a grasshopper component (for version 0.7) that lays out the cutting patterns on a flat sheet. It will incorporate some form of packing logic to reduce material waste. With this component, any changes in the parametric relationships of the grasshopper model will result in automatically updated cut sheets. We plan to release the component once it is done so check back soon or visit Atelier Panda.” [3]Link to blog [4]Link to post ”Straight to Fabrication”

BlendME (2010-11-08 10:02)
[1] BlendME (Blender Modelling Environment for Architecture) is a tool aimed at rapid design and analysis of commercial and residential building design. It brings together many already existing open-source tools to produce a platform for modelling and interaction of the results of many simulation methodologies. The use of open-source software as a basis for BlendME is important for the following reasons: Scalability : all tools should be able to easily scale across low-cost high performance computing (HPC) clusters (Beowulf clusters) using MPI. This is especially important for computationally-intensive processes such as CFD but also may have advantages in enabling real-time computation of other less-cpu intensive processes such as auralization. Low-cost : The building industry is very budget-oriented and in order to improve design and realize the vision of low-energy architecture it is understood that tools must be low-cost in order to improve adoption of technical design tools in the industry. Distribution: In order to facilitate education it is important to have a platform which can be distributed 99
as a liveUSB and copied without fear of copyright. The package currently incorporates: 3D Building Information Modelling Thermal Energy Modelling (through EnergyPlus) Computational Fluid Dynamics (through OpenFOAM) Lighting analysis (through Radiance) Sun-path analysis Import: o gbXML Export: openFOAM case files Radiace case files EnergyPlus (.idf) files FDS (.fds) files Further native features of Blender that complement the addon are: Interactive walk-through and visualisation Photo-realistic rendering through a large choice of rendering engines In the future it is hoped to incorporate: Fire Modelling Life-cycle cost-benefit analysis Acoustic raytracing and 3D real-time auralization Queue/egress modelling BlendMe isn’t available yet, but when it will, it will be commercial/donation based add-on.
———————————-———————– ENG Finally, after months spent in the design, preparation and organization together with [7]Alessio Erioli and BEST department of [8]Politecnico di Milano in the person of Professor Ingrid Paoletti, we can share the news of the activation of a Postgraduate course ”TAC - Technically Advanced Construction”; course will start at the beginning of 2011. I think T.A.C. is an innovative course in Italy under many aspects. Innovative topics covered. Innovative for the people involveded to transmit knowledge and to keep track of participants. Probably also for the innovative way it is organized. Of course, I ask you to spread through your channels, official and unofficial, the news of the course and if you know of any persons, companies or realities that could sponsor the event ... feel free to communicate us!

in[form]ation
Co-de-iT lecture (2010-11-22 16:27)
[1] in[form]ation is a lecture about the role of information (both as knowledge unit and morphogenetic driver) 108
in generative processes and design strategies in the world of complexity. How do we move from a crisis towards an improved awareness of nature as a system of emergent processes, non linear networks and digital tools as media for design and production? The lecture tries to address this multiplicitous question, and since february 2009, when it was first presented, it was changed ad evolved to the present set of slides. abstract We are experiencing a crisis, and facing it we are not able anymore to understand it or finding solutions to it without a paradimg shift in our thinking. Such shift involves theories about complexity, emergence, network, self-organization, material systems, digital tools and their consequences on our model of reality, knowledge, cognition, culture, economy, ecology and, ultimately, architecture. What is the common element in this network of interconnected systems? All of them are operating in a continuous changing condition (far from equilibrium) and rely on information (matter-energy) exchange. Information lies at the bottom of physical things, it is involved in morphogenesis as well as in the evolution of culture and communication. We’ll take a look on how information plays that role in nature (as well as what nature is under this perspective) and in architecture, especially in its linkages with digital tools and generative and parametric approaches. Most probably it will evolve further, nonetheless we would like to share it at the present level for a very important reason: it does not matter that much to us to deliver a smoothly refined discourse in order to elegantly wrap up the topic, rather our intention is to trigger the discussion bringing our point of view, with its inevitable imperfections. Only in the confrontation among different positions there is the chance of growth and change. Robotic Arm Fabrication (2010-11-24 08:23)
[1] ”This course is an extension of the Boston Architectural College’s Edco Grant that was awarded to Margaret Hwang, Peter Schmitt, and Matt Trimble for design research in robotic arm fabrication for architectural applications. This is an 8-wk course that will take place at [2]Radlab, in the Seaport District of Boston, and will focus on the exploration of alternative uses in robotic arm machining. The course is framed around a single project that will be presented at the end of the eight week session. Students will engage with the robotic arm as a design machine, used as another tool within a collection of other digital and physical tools. Their objective is to create a custom fixture that will attach to the robot, a material assembly upon/with which the robot will operate, and the operation itself.” [3]Link al blog 1. http://roboticarmfabrication.wordpress.com/ 2. http://www.radlabinc.com/ 3. http://roboticarmfabrication.wordpress.com/

NSO - The Nonlinear Systems Organization at PennDesign (2010-12-15 13:37)
[1] The Nonlinear Systems Organization is a research organization at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. Its mission is to explore ways in which architecture can demonstrate, test, and apply insights 115
and theories from mathematics and the sciences - nonlinear, algorithmic, and complex - in the design material structures across an open-ended range of scales, materials, and design disciplines. The work of the NSO is experimental and treats the activity of design itself as a form of research. The NSO seeks to produce new organizations of matter and life that possess extraordinary beauty, diversity and versatility. By exposing scientists and theorists to the opportunities of applied design, the NSO also seeks to stimulate the further development of science.” [2]Link al blog

Make a Hybrid (2010-12-15 14:24)
[1] ”Make a Hybrid is a relatively incompact and informal study team. Our members are tutors, Doctors and Master’s students from [2]Hyperbody studio of Architecture Faculty, TU Delft. Our core ideology is based on non-standard form finding, interactive behaviours and digital-controled fabrication. We are also concerned about emerging, complex and bionic structures and other cutting-edge research topics. Make a Hybrid focuses on intersections among learning, researching and teaching, emphasizes intercommunions of designers with different backgrounds, and tries to find integrated measures to employ parametric design, interactive-technology, CNC manufacture and new materials.” [3]Link al blog
