[1] ”Esperant.0 is a beta software plug-in developed by Brandon Kruysman that bridges the gap between industrial robotics and designers. Esperant.0 uses Maya’s embedded features regarding kinematics and skeletons, and uses this as a technique to redefine how designers control the motion of industrial robot arms.” [2]Link to ”Esperant.0” website 1. http://www.esperantorobotics.com/ 2. http://www.esperantorobotics.com/

#FollowYear (my follow friday for 2012) (2012-01-13 13:00)
[1] Everyone is on the web trying to satisfy his curiousity, interests and needs, trying to increase his passions on certain arguments. Good links are like blood oxygen to our minds, a good link is like a brain stimuli that pushes further our consciousness and knowledge about us and the world around us. So I want to thank you who, during the 2011, made great my time with so many interesting links and thoughts. I know that everyone is different but I want to suggest to my friends to follow them. If links are oxygen, the people who shared information are node through which we can find more oxygen, then others interesting people and improve ourself. I start my list with [2]Wildcat2030 and [3]Amira Skomorowska. I stumbled into those 2 guys in the first part of 2011 and actually are respectively my unaware mentor and muse. Probably if during this past year I shifted so much my attention from architectural stuff to a more wide range of interests is due to their links and posts. To read their articles is always a pleasure both for eyes and mind (at least for mine). I want to suggest, especially if you are architects (but not only) to follow the facebook page of [4]Karl Chu. Each of its post is a sort of ”paper”, an extremely interesting journey into architectural development and future, and also the quality of the replies, usually, are great as people that are replying. I think that [5]Rachel Armstrong is pursuing one of the most interesting and exciting architectural research (and not only) I saw in this last years. She is a consistent presence on my network and I want to thanks her because, despite her incredible full time work, she finds always the time to comment posts (also mine) writing interesting and useful replies. Her energy is incredible and she is involved in so many activities that I can’t summarize all. I suggest to you obviously to follow the social networks of [6]Kevin Kelly and [7]Sir Ken Robinson. Any comment about them is unuseful and if by chance you don’t know who they are ... great ... I’ll let you discover their work through their blogs and websites. Another person I really enjoy reading his posts is [8]Esko Kilpi. His understanding of the value of 9
connections, power of network and social interactions into business field is incredible. I want also say thank you to [9]Venessa Miemis. She is an incredible blogger and network catalyzer. I really enjoy every posts she did and most of its posted links. She is in my mind, together with [10]Rodrigo Medina (that I suggest also to follow) the icon of the new generation minds, able to capture the flowing energies and potentials and transform all this into high-value real things. [11]Vitorino Ramos, a very sharp mind & researcher, is another keypoint in my network. I like so much his posts and irony to describe this complex world in its different facets and aspects. I include in this post also some brothers in arms. [12]Francesco Cingolani, [13]Domenico di Siena and [14]Massimo Menichinelli are italian digi-friends with which I share a lot of interests, visions and probably utopia. But they are also ambassadors of the ”brain drain” so well known in Italy. I really like their works and their way to be innovative to use, or better, to utilize the network potential, envisioning the open-architecture of tomorrow. I can describe the moment I saw for the first time the [15]Edward Harran TED lecture at TEDxBrisbane 2011. For the first time I hear someone describe how I feel sometimes myself into the real/digital world. Actually for me Knowmad idea is really an inspiration and in 2012 I’ll try, modestly, to be (I hope) an applicant knowmad. Another great guy is [16]Jason Silva. I strongly I recommend you to watch all his videos! I really like his ability to transmit and combine easily ideas about complexity, future, innovation, singularity and more with a so strong passion and enthusiasm. [17]Andrea Kuszewski, science writer, researcher and artist deserves really to be followed also. In the last months of 2011 have entered in my network also other interesting people as [18]Marianna Limas, [19]Peta Bush, [20]Guido Maciocci, [21]Miquel Lloveras ... so I’m sure they will make great my 2012. I can’t forget my ”travel mates” [22]Alessio Erioli and [23]Monika Wittig ... no words can describe how much they are teaching-inspiring me everyday and I’m so lucky to work with them. We are shaped by the others ... so choose your great ones ! thus for the starting 2012 year ... I wish you a GOOD NETWORK !!! Andrea

Form Follows Performance (2012-03-28 12:22)
[1] ”Using digital tools as a catalyst for better and more sustainable design. This blog represents our ongoing findings on vision and reality about utilizing digital tools in the architectural and urban design field. We believe that in sustainable design the really significant decisions happen in the early stages. Hence the focus of this blog is on green building design tools for architects and planners that are easy to learn and apply. To be successful in the architectural community these tools shall be interactive and provide visually comprehensible output. They shall enable the designer to make informed decisions based on simulation results and support clear client communication.” [2]Link to ”Form Follows Performance” blog 1. http://www.formfollowsperformance.com/ 2. http://www.formfollowsperformance.com/

RhinoVAULT Beta released (2012-05-11 09:49)
[1] ”The Rhinoceros ® Plug-In rhinoVAULT emerged from current research on structural form finding using the Thrust-Network-Approach to intuitively create and explore compression-only structures. Using reciprocal diagrams, it provides an intuitive, fast method, adopting the same advantages of techniques such as Graphic Statics, but offering a viable extension to fully three-dimensional problems. Our goal is to share key aspects of our research in a comprehensible and transparent setup to let you not only create beautiful shapes but also to give you an understanding of the underlying structural principles.” [2]Link to ”RhinoVAULT” webpage 1. http://block.arch.ethz.ch/tools/rhinovault 2. http://block.arch.ethz.ch/tools/rhinovault

openshapefactory (2012-06-13 10:06)
[1] ”openshapefactory is a simple to use 3d scripting language based on OpenCascade. OpenShapefactory is a Middle-Man between you, OpenCascade and QT, it serves as a Geometry Factory wrapping OpenCascade, and providing a single-point of entry to the creation of most geometrical operations. In a Gecko - OpenShapeFactory allows you to:
• create Brep-Geometry: i.e ( sweeps, loft surface, revolvesurface, face, edge, etc); • visualize the geometry into a 3d viewport. • link QtWidget’s created manually in the Qt-Designer to Update Functions that Create Geometry. • Get direct access to the HSF library using QtScript( ECMA/Javascript) using the ScriptWidget. The openshapefactory is divided literally between a 2d surface left and a 3d surface right. The 2d surface is a diagrammatic panel where widgets are loaded, in the case of the precompiled download, a QScintilla text-editor widget with programmatic access to the openshapefactory is automatically added as the only widget. To the right of the 2d panel you have the 3d view port, any change to the code that results from a visible shape will be immediately visible in the 3d view port.” [2]Link to ”openshapefactory” webpage 1. http://code.google.com/p/openshapefactory/ 2. http://code.google.com/p/openshapefactory/
Playing God - BBC Documentary 2012 (2012-06-16 15:17)
[1] ”life itself is became a programmable machine” ... 28
”Broadcast (2012) Adam Rutherford meets a new creature created by American scientists, the spider-goat. It is part goat, part spider, and its milk can be used to create artificial spider’s web. It is part of a new field of research, synthetic biology, with a radical aim: to break down nature into spare parts so that we can rebuild it however we please. This technology is already being used to make bio-diesel to power cars. Other researchers are looking at how we might, one day, control human emotions by sending ’biological machines’ into our brains.” One of the most amazing documentary I ever see. It’s about programming life, Synthetic biology and our next (already here) future. [2]Link to ”Playing God” youtube video 1. http://youtu.be/AKxmqMH4w_A 2. http://youtu.be/AKxmqMH4w_A

Obsession - monthly paper by disguincio&co (2012-06-26 10:48)
[1] Obsessions is a collection of mini monthly paper curated by [2]disguincio &co and published on the [3]City Vision magazine website Various themes will be introduced, not necessarily built on the architectural discourse, but towards which they can interact, compare and talk together to open new doors of interpretation. Since these are obsession, there will not be a specified order in the publications, but a flow of thoughts that go through different fields such as aesthetics, perception, biology, matter, robotics, flesh& Obsessions è una raccolta mensile di mini paper curati da [4]disguincio &co e pubblicato sul sito della rivista [5]City Vision Saranno presentati vari temi non necessariamente costruiti sul discorso architettonico, ma con il quale potranno interagire, confrontarsi e dialogare per aprire nuove porte interpretative.

GOAT 1.3 - Grasshopper optimization solver (2012-09-10 11:27)
[1] ’GOAT is an optimization solver component for Rhino’s Grasshopper. Optimization affects shape, weight, cost and is a driving force of a modern design process. goat provides tools to solve design problems as optimization problems. Optimization was introduced to the Grasshopper community with David Rutten’s galapagos. Galapagos is 42
an evolutionary optimization approach, and as such is based on a randomized core. goat perfectly complements galapagos by pursuing a mathematical more rigorous approach. It relies on gradient-free optimization algorithms, delivering fast and deterministic results. At every run, goat will yield the same optimal result. goat is a drop-in replacement for galapagos. It is based on David Rutten’s galapagos GUI and interfaces NLopt, a collection of mathematical optimization libraries. goat was developed in joint work with Heinz Schmiedhofer and Martin Reis from feasible.’ [2]Link to ’GOAT’ website [3]Link to ’GOAT’ grasshopper group

Mosquito - Grasshopper plugin (2012-10-19 18:44)
[1] ’Mosquito is a plugin suite developed for Rhino and Grasshopper. The plugin allows us to tap into social , financial and popular media. Extracting location, profiles, images and messages from Facebook,Twitter, Topsy etc&. As architects part of our responsibility is the consideration of the public realm. Today however , people tend to hang in the digital equivalent, namely, social media space. While this space becomes ever more permanent, the physical realm is fleeting, an evanescent space. We are utilizing the tools in this component suite to bridge the gap between geometrics and information. Driving geometry with data and vice-versa. The ability to extract user Geo-coordinates, language, thoughts, profile and image enables architects to paint a picture. It is this 4-dimensional picture, which we refer to as “spatial condition”, that allows us to explore what happened yesterday, now and hypothesize about tomorrow. True 4-dimensional modeling.’ Mosquito plugin is developed by Carson Smuts [2]Link to Mosquito webpage

Silkworm plugin for Grasshopper (2012-11-07 11:07)
[1] Silkworm is a plugin that translates Grasshopper and Rhino geometry into GCode for 3d printing. Silkworm allows for the complete and intuitive manipulation of the printer GCode, enabling novel printed material properties to be specified by non-solid geometry and techniques of digital craft. Project Silkworm is an open project to develop the concept of digital craft via the resources of open source 3d printing technology. The revolution of 3D printing is seeing a rise in novel methodologies of material design communication, from concept through to fabrication. Now additive processes can be manipulated through data driven logics programmed directly by the designer. Silkworm offers the designer a vocabulary to choreograph these processes and develop the way the printed object is conceived. [2]Link to Silkwork website

With its deep roots in architectural design it is inclined towards new territories, experimental design and towards developing new design tools and design techniques. We are searching for patterns in both natural environments and human-related processes in order to inspire possible architectural events. Congruent to our own design endeavors we enjoy spreading the knowledge through workshops and seminars with a high emphasis on cross platform design, interdisciplinary communication, digital fabrication and manufacturing methods. We strongly believe that the symbiotic relationship between imagination and technology should not be used as prosthetics of the design process but more as a reinforcing exoskeleton. Spider for Rhino (2012-11-26 09:27)
[1] The Spider for Rhino is a plug-in created for the purpose of the specific and research oriented project. Originally it was used for the modelling of large web-like elastomer assemblies. It is conceived as a design tool and a tiny contribution to the fast growing field of architectural research aiming at better enacting of material behaviour within geometric modelling. The plug-in focuses on elasticity and allows for a simple simulation of approximate material properties. The idea is based on the simplified version of Hook’s law and relies on the particle-spring systems commonly used for creating physical simulations. Material properties, such as reversible deformation range and elastic modulus, are parametrically controlled to allow for iterative testing of different building materials. We hope this may open the door to other research related to optimization and form-finding. [1]
The MSc Architectural Design (AVATAR) is a one-year full-time and two-year part-time course that encourages students to develop a speculative and experimental approach to architectural design through the use of advanced digital tools and techniques. The course is designed for students of architecture and related disciplines, who wish to continue their academic, intellectual and professional skills beyond the requirements of their professionally recognised qualification. The course promotes an experimental and speculative approach to architecture and provides the skills for the production of theoretical, analytical and critical studies on and in advanced architectural design. It aims to address and redefine new trends and knowledge in the field of architecture and offers a postgraduate design framework strongly supported by theoretical components. Students are embedded within one of the Diploma in Architecture Units run by members of the AVATAR research group. They are encouraged to develop a personal focus and an independent research position within the Unit framework. AVATAR is an acronym for Advanced Virtual and Technological Architecture Research, the AVATAR research group was founded by Professor Neil Spiller in 2004. 54
The programme is not validated by a professional body and does not provide exemption from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Part 2 professional examination or from the Architects’ Registration Board (ARB) Part 2 prescriptions. The aims of the programme are: - To develop research concerning the impact of advanced technology on architectural design, and to contribute on a discussion on issues such as aesthetics, philosophy and cybernetics. - To concern itself with the technologies of virtuality (exploring fully immersed, mixed and augmented environments); Time based digital media (film, video and animation), Nano and bio technology (micro landscapes and architecture, ethics, sustainability and ecology), reflexive environments and cybernetic systems. - To posit new aesthetic systems and codes of representation for architecture, interior design, multi media design and graphic design.
