Green technology
As companies embrace planetfriendly policies, expect to hear about, and experience, more technology promoting sustainable practices. It is no longer enough to virtual signal – the public and partner businesses expect to know what policies a company has in place to meet net-zero targets and how these will ensure lowered rates of pollution and environmental damage. In any case, companies operating in many countries will have to comply with new laws no matter what a shareholder’s view. In 2023, US and European regulators look likely to insist businesses are more accountable for their environmental impact. Whatever emissions companies – and their supply chains and customers – are responsible for will have to be disclosed.

Bernard Marr highlighted increased green hydrogen production as a trend to watch, and sure enough, the German government opened 2023 by announcing more use of blue and green hydrogen as it curbs the country’s reliance on gas and oil. Green-tech and cleantech, sustainable consumption, energy efficient infrastructure – they will all be big topics in 2023.
