Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (MI) have not nailed creative writers’, composers’, and painters’ skillsets just yet despite strong developments in the field throughout 2022. Creating a literary, musical or visual masterpiece with AI is currently a task born out of curiosity but that could change. Up to half of all human-computer interactions could be enhanced by AI by the end of the year, if current trends continue. The implementation of AI is already helping savvy companies bridge staffing shortages, improve customer experience and reduce complaints. Read our forthcoming interview with executives from loveholidays in the March edition of Digital Innovation to discover how AI and AV have boosted the company’s online bookings. Jobs requiring a combination of analytic, creative and communication nuance may not be safe forever, either.

Late in 2022, the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) announced new opportunities for Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) in AI. The European Innovation Council (EIC) has opened funding of over €1.6billion for 2023 to enable breakthrough innovators to scale up and create new markets. This includes EIC Pathfinder funding of €343million for multi-disciplinary research leading to technology breakthroughs and €128.3m to turn research results into innovation opportunities. There are further funds available for next generation technologies, including biomarkers for cancer, quantum or semiconductor components, and space technologies and services.
