years ago, the idea that India would be counted among the top nations producing world class animation, VFX and high-end computer graphics for TV, movies, games, and brands was just that, an idea. That idea has now become a reality. Biren is among the founders of the large-scale animation revolution in India. I have had the privilege of interacting with Biren for over two decades and our first interview on August 2, 2001 for The Times of India was memorable. Biren was CEO of UTV Interactive and he was discussing the prospects and future of broadband. We must have met over a hundred times in various markets and summits - his energy levels and optimism for the Indian media sector, his championing of a collective voice for the industry has remained as passionate and steadfast from our first handshake. We are extremely happy to release this special edition at Cannes -when India is celebrating 75 years of Independence and 75th edition of Cannes Film Festival. It is also a proud moment as India is the Country of Honour at Cannes. Pickle decided to celebrate Biren Ghose’s 2021 award - The French National Ordre de Merit - a knighthood, with this special commemorative issue. Pages 7 to 13 describe the award and the citation on why he received it and his comments while receiving it. While Biren believes the best days for the industry, for his company and for himself are still ahead, we wanted to applaud him and to savour this recognition by the French President for his contribution to the Indian Entertainment industry. True to character, rather than dwelling on the past, his thoughts are all about how to further the Indo-French collaboration in Media & Entertainment. For this issue, he has articulated a strategy for France and India to combine forces to gain a larger global market share in the new digital (refer pages 49 to 60). We have tried to trace Biren’s personal and professional journey (pages 14 to 33), which gives us a glimpse of his ‘run up’ leading to this spectacular honor. Perhaps, the best way to evaluate the significance of Biren’s knighthood is to see it through the lens of a wide variety of professionals. These straddle global industry leaders, past and present colleagues, technology partners, media luminaries, trade association heads and NGOs. We were overwhelmed by the immediacy of the response and their spontaneous and insightful reflections which provide a wide variety of insights into Biren’s richly textured journey. This is reflective of what a consummate networker Biren is. He continues to involve himself across the entire panoply of Media and Entertainment verticals. He truly believes that computer aided digital production now pervades all forms of content creation across the entire entertainment spectrum. He has sought to innovate across this space and strived to make Indian animation an enchanting and attractive form of film making across all screens and genres through the sheer dint of his passion, patience and perseverance. His engagement at global animation and games markets and advocacy across several industry and government forums, for over two decades, has helped create the momentum for the business of animation in India from its early beginnings. Evangelism is about selling ideas, and Biren has done just that, advancing India’s reach and ability making it a mainstream player.

Biren’s career has straddled industrial revolutions. Coincidentally, as he enters the fourth decade of his career, the timing corresponds with the world’s Fourth Industrial Revolution. The pace and scope of massive shifts in the media space have placed his creative and innovative disposition at a premium and this combined with the scientific and technological advancements in products, services and the disruption in the marketplace has created fertile soil for his acuity to flourish. He has been driving change in step with the rapid pace at which the market has evolved. This has been possible due to the massive global network he has cultivated which is further augmented by his company’s own pedigree. He has leveraged this ability to synthesize the offerings across the multi-brand services platform he leads at Technicolor India. We could not resist challenging him with a ‘rapid-fire’ round of questions (Pages 136 to 139). These felicitations provide an understanding of what makes him who he is - a leader that understands value, demonstrates diversity of thinking and embraces empathy. His team sees him as a ‘man for any crisis’ and he is adept at building and scaling amazing teams. He lightens every moment with his patent humor and quick-witted manner - just the recipe for these turbulent times. Congratulations, Chevalier Ghose!

Special Moment of Elevation

To have received the National Order of Merit, one of France’s highest civilian honours, is so much more meaningful for Biren Ghose because of his love for France and all the things French. He hopes that the honour would bring a greater awareness of the relevance of arts. Here is his full acceptance speech where he underscores what this special recognition means to him...

Bonjour, Madame La Consule Générale, Docteur Marjorie Vanbaelinghem. Merci de cet honneur. I am grateful to my company Technicolor and to my industry Animation - for having helped me build this special connection between France and India. The most wonderful moments in our life are sometimes those that are unexpected and which come upon us unsolicited. Today is one of those “moments of elevation” which is unique. Birthdays, anniversaries and festivals are annual events, each with its own cadence. This occasion, however, is a moment that comes but once in a lifetime and is therefore truly special. For me, it is even more special because this recognition comes from a country I am passionate about. I love everything French! I love French food [and am a proud member of the Chaine des Rotissuers], I love the French wine, I’ve loved French art from the Impressionists to the street graffiti, I love the museums and art galleries, I love Paris but I also love the small towns brimming with character. I know Annecy like the back of my hand and have the same familiarity with Cannes and the South coast. My family and I have had numerous vacations in France – my wife and daughters love to shop there. I am a big fan of music [especially jazz] and I am a bigger fan of the French way of life which values beauty and free expression. The joie de vivre that characterises the French way of living is how friends and colleagues often describe my own personality. So when I received from France and the French Government this incredible honour of bestowing upon me the National Order of Merit, one of France’s highest civilian honours, it is so much more meaningful because it is from a country I really love. I shall do my best to live up to this momentous recognition.

When I was 10 years old, my best friend and I would ride our bicycles every evening up and down in my family estate. With flags flying from our handlebars, we thought we were knights on a crusade. My childhood fantasy has now become a reality and here I am today a “chevalier”. I am also delighted to be carrying forth my family history as my great-grandfather and his father were both knighted. However, they did not have the privilege of being French Chevaliers having been knighted by the British Viceroy of India and King George V of England respectively. I wish my mother were among us today to see her son carry on that tradition. My family and friends know that many of my achievements are an outcome of my personality. I have a playful mind that keeps me inquisitive and always learning. I am deeply grateful to my parents who allowed me the freedom to be who I wanted to be! Their biggest gift was to expose me to the world - literally - and have taken me around the globe before I was 20. They demonstrated that travel provides learnings and experiences which are greater than any bookish education could provide. We first travelled across France in 1976. This philosophy and exposure have instilled within me the “shock absorbers” that prepare me for all kinds of terrain. Thanks Mum and Dad!

Knights are sworn to preserve their legacy like a flame. To me, this means that facing tough times is not about surrender, but about conquest. I am hopeful that this recognition brings a greater awareness of the relevance of arts. Today, animation and digital arts provide a greater opportunity for artists to earn a livelihood while indulging their passion for creativity. Arts is also moving beyond just storytelling and entertainment and is now becoming ubiquitous across several industries. I have had the chance to work with some amazing mentors and have tried to pass on the lessons I learned from them to those that have worked with me. The advice from these gurus is - that generosity of spirit - giving of one’s time and sharing one’s knowledge will invariably yield the best outcomes. The big lesson is: ‘Focus on Something Outside Yourself’. Make other people shine! That brings great satisfaction. This award is probably just that - a recognition and an outcome of the work my 5,000 colleagues in India and I have done to help, foster and grow the creative community and ecosystem for Animation, VFX, and Games in our country. There are a lot of people to thank but I would prefer to do that personally. I am so happy that my lovely wife and daughters are here to celebrate this special moment with me. I thank the honourable Consul General Marjorie once again for this ceremony, I thank Hemangini and the team at the French Consulate in Bengaluru. I thank the hospitality of this wonderful establishment The Den. I thank my colleagues for inspiring me every day. Thank you, our dear friends for being here. Thank you, the Government of France, this award comes at such an opportune time - a time that reminds me that I need to find energy and motivation from this decoration to redouble my efforts to try to make a difference and strengthen our cooperation. Merci Beaucoup!

CHAMPIONING INDIA-FRANCE TIES Biren Ghose, the Country Head of Technicolor India, has been conferred with the National Order of Merit—one of France’s highest civilian honours. Marjorie Vanbaelinghem, the Consule Générale of France in Bangalore, tells Pickle how this ‘Champion of Creativity’ has contributed immensely to bring India and France closer through cooperation in the digital arts, and played a pivotal role in churning out some of the most loved global blockbuster movies and TV series from Technicolor’s Bangalore studio. of Technicolor’s India production studio has been phenomenal, growing from a team of 300 staff to what is now over 5,000 world-class, talented artists and technicians working across a massive volume of blockbuster movies and TV series and advertising projects. It speaks volumes of the achievements of Biren and his team. Biren is a champion of innovation and creativity; and for these reasons we decided to honor Biren the Knight of Ordre National du Mérite.

What contributions has Biren Ghose made that has been deserving of this honor from the French Government? Biren has been involved in design thinking and innovation for a long time in the Animation, Games and Visual Effects industry, and for the last 11 years with the French global juggernaut, Technicolor - a world leader in Media and Entertainment space. Thanks to the leadership of this gentleman, as it is due to his efforts that the development

We know of the Oscars and Cannes Golds and VES and BAFTA awards for so many memorable films including Disney’s The Lion King and The Jungle Book, The Life of Pi and 1917. As the French Consul General in Bangalore, it makes me proud that a French company in India was involved in the production of such iconic titles. That is really meaningful. There are a number of exciting projects coming up at Technicolor and their French owned company Mikros Animation. As always I expect a much bigger cooperation between France and India and I’m really looking forward to that.

thought leader and an industry evangelist for over 40 years, Biren Ghose has earned the distinction of being a futurist and strategist with a unique ability to startup new ventures, innovate new business models and lead government, industry and academia in symbiotic engagements. Starting his career at the age of 21, Biren Ghose has been involved in several journeys where he was required to take an idea from the drawing board to final successful outcomes. “It’s all about the idea and it’s execution,” says Biren. “As a marketer, I credit my success to always looking ‘outside-in’, understanding the consumer and finding those moments of serendipity that would help us win our way into their minds and hearts,” he says.

Biren is creatively inclined. Through his various assignments with companies like the consumer durables giant USHA Fans and Sewing Machines; and Niky Tasha, a startup consumer durables brand for Escorts, he gained a unique and intimate understanding of what connects brands to consumers. These assignments gave him an understanding of how business works from the viewpoints of two of the country’s premier industrial groups at the time. His long stint with UB’s Kingfisher [the leading beer conglomerate] and United Spirits [now Diageo], India’s #1 spirits group that was looking to diversify in many high-tech areas, gave him an exposure to global collaborations and the dynamics within multi-brand, multi-disciplinary businesses. Across all these assignments, he was known to be an ‘ideas’ person working in marketing and later in corporate planning, business development and general management. His own venture - Kahani World, leveraged that experience to innovate with original IP to take Indian Animation themes to a global audience. He spent 7 years in Dubai and that gave him the chance to see how his learnings could be applied in a very difficult cultural context, across a completely different set of consumers in the Middle East where he worked with B2B and B2C businesses.

16

In 1999, at the giddy height of the dot com wave, he had the opportunity to be a co-founder at UTV Interactive (UTV subsequently became Walt Disney India). He acknowledges Ronnie Screwvala [the Group Chairman of UTV] as a mentor, who inducted him into the media industry through a venture in broadband streaming and local language internet platforms which was his “baptism by fire in the M&E industry”. That assignment finally transitioned him into the animation world at UTV after the internet company was merged into the parent company. Biren had finally arrived at a business that has held him in gleeful captivity for over 20 years now! Working with stalwarts like Ronnie and in later years with Kishore Lulla of Eros across the Indian film and TV landscape; and later at Technicolor with the likes of Tim Sarnoff, Christian Roberton and Mark Benson have helped him to continuously evolve his professional context in the media world. He has continued to lead and be led. These mentors inspired him with their global view and this blended with his own passion, persistence and the leadership style that have honed his skills to always stay ahead of the curve, a prerequisite in an ever-evolving technology convergence industry. He has constantly gravitated to assignments where he could indulge his entrepreneurial style and infuse it with the resources of large companies which needed his dynamic leadership ‘chops’ to achieve an aggressive growth trajectory.

17

India’s Only Media BIZ magazine for the world

www.pickle.co.in

He is however no stranger to adversity. The idea to create Indian IP for the global and local market, which was the premise for his entrepreneurial journey at Kahani World (for example), did not meet with desired outcomes, as both then and now, the local market in India did not have robust enough revenues and price points that supported productions at global quality animation levels. In any case, the worldwide recession of 2008 ‘put paid’ to these entrepreneurial plans. At around this time, Technicolor found his experience, including his entrepreneurial exploits, valuable. They saw the grit and determination he had exhibited in his journey and opined that his potential and ability was worthy of getting him to helm their India studio aspirations. He joined the company when it was still a startup joint venture and shortly before it became a 100% subsidiary of Technicolor. The rest is history.

Working with stalwarts like Ronnie ScrewVala and in later years with Kishore Lulla of Eros across the Indian film and TV landscape and later at Technicolor with the likes of Tim Sarnoff, Christian Roberton and Mark Benson have helped Biren to continuously evolve his professional context in the media world.

Technicolor India was the group’s first foray into CG animation. From a relatively small team, they soon had marquee clients like Nickelodeon in high-end Animated series and Games giants like EA. In just over 5 years since Biren started here, the Bangalore studio became the world’s premier CG animation studio with the most enviable slate of episodic TV animation produced with and for Walt Disney, DreamWorks Animation and Nickelodeon. This prolific animation production platform produces annually as many world leading titles as many top studios would be proud to produce in a lifetime! Along the way, these skillsets have evolved to straddle an amazingly creative business for game art and animation, including for the best of the best publishers EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar Games, Sony and many others. His concurrent mandate from the month he joined, was to create India’s first major end-to-end global VFX studio and to evolve the talent - both technology and creative teams. Under his leadership, the studio achieved an unprecedented scale and competency, further developed by working on over 150 major blockbuster feature film titles, of which 4 have won the coveted Oscar award to boot. The Technicolor brands MPC, The Mill and Mr.X have managed to build substantial global scale by leveraging India as their highly creative “engine” and anchor VFX crew. The awards from Oscars, Cannes, VES, British Arrows, BAFTAS, Emmys and others fill the shelves of the studios with repeated wins across these awards and this is a testimony to the pedigree.

My Brother Biren Anita Mahdi, sister of Biren Ghose, reveals the personal side of her brother when she describes him as a wonderful family man.

22

My brother is a great combination of our parents! He has the poise, patience, humour and gentility of our dad and the creativity, musicianship and zest for life from our mom. I have seen him through all of his life launching himself and really working at embracing anything he took up – tennis, squash, playing the guitar, collecting music & art, travelling the world, savouring wines and spirits and working wholeheartedly across a mindboggling range of industries as if he had belonged there forever! Animation has been ‘the marina’ in which

he has anchored his professional ship! He makes great connections and friends and is a wonderful family man who adores his wife and daughters immensely. My parents were truly proud of him and I could not have asked for a better brother. My husband, kids and I are over the moon at his knighthood. In our ancestral line-up, we have had two knights in the family. How proud they must be seeing Biren continue the family tradition. Cheers and love to Biren to many more accomplishments.

My Fun Buddy, Biren Rahul Basu, Vice President, GAMCO Investors, Inc.

Biren and I have been friends, since school, from the 1960s, through a politically explosive Calcutta, to the early 1970s. Our school was started by a Frenchman, who no doubt will be pleased that a student from La Martiniere has been so celebrated. Biren has always been a fun “buddy” and we share many common passions; tennis, squash, music, travel and enjoying a beverage or two as we spent many days of our youth at the swaths and sports clubs in Calcutta, which had the country’s most active social life those days. We travelled and played squash for the University team. He has always been an all-rounder and we have kept in touch,

23

even though I moved to the US in 1981. He has been a loyal friend and kept up the spirit of our school days through these many years. We try to meet annually and our friendship has extended to our families. Biren made a lovely toast on my 60th birthday and now its my turn and pleasure to send him heartfelt greetings on his French honors; being knighted by the President of France.

Labore et Constantia, our school motto means by hard work and constant effort. Biren has certainly exemplified that motto and stuck to the knitting in animation these past several years bringing his gamesmanship from our early years to fruition in his career.

A Strategist Par Excellence “Strategy is an organic rather than a mechanical process”, believes Biren. “We in India tend to think with our hearts and gravitate towards finding our way through a sea of grey rather more easily than most! We don’t get bound by traditional linear protocols and mindsets. We do not follow conventional ‘cookiecutter’ routes if we can help it. Like in all transforming businesses of the digital era, we set ourselves up as highly creative artistic incubators. Our approach to each business, project and client is bespoke and innovative. We make many of our initial routines and methods rapidly redundant and change as quickly as the market and technologies demand. Our global brands have demonstrated that ‘continuous discovery’ is our mantra to achieve new idea-rich paradigms that challenge the status quo and make us the #1 in our field”, said Biren in a conversation with us when asked about what makes Technicolor India work with its global studios to be world leaders.

24

India’s Only Media BIZ magazine for the world

www.pickle.co.in

One of the best examples of the outcome of his strategy is Technicolor’s very early innovation and participation in the new technology, a great example of which is Virtual Production, that is already becoming the ‘holy grail’ of this pandemic stricken industry, particularly where live-action and on-premises studio work is handicapped. Using game engine technologies to emulate live-action film production in a VR space, helps to conceptualize each frame even before the shoot or CG shots are commenced. This increases the potential to scale-up concurrent work across different projects since the number of iterations at every step of production are reduced. This also makes the production houses more agnostic about live locations as the scenarios and environments are all created in CG. His Bangalore artists across all units are continuously upskilling to work on these new technologies. “We do not have a singular way to produce the imagery expected of us. Every project is an exciting challenge - no two are the same! Starting with the unknown and exploring a creative pathway through to a stellar result is something we thrive on. We are antidogma. We not only rise to the complexities of each project, but rise with it!”, said Biren to us with an understandable twinkle in his eye. Biren’s instinct for shaping any idea into a pragmatic and executable solution in new and evolving spaces has positioned him as one of the more influential “thought leaders” in his country and industry. He has provided counsel to multiple stakeholders in addition to his business focus, tirelessly taking Technicolor’s business to new heights. He is a powerful influence and resource to government policymakers, trade & industry associations and significantly in the development of skillsets & talent mentoring educational institutions and startups.

25

India’s Only Media BIZ magazine for the world

www.pickle.co.in

His design thinking has helped shape strategy and build consensus among disparate groups. This has been a trademark from the early days when he chaired one of the most thought-provoking media conclaves which launched the film exhibition multiplex policy for India; and laid the seeds for the 1st policy for the privatization of radio, soon after he entered the Indian media industry. Similarly, propagating and formulating the policy for Animation, Games and VFX (AVGC) in Karnataka, the first in the country; and getting the largest ever government grant of USD 7 million (approx.) for the AVGC Center of Excellence in Bangalore - which is now up and in action, are some of the wonderful outcomes of his “business architect” mindset. His role at CII in launching the 1st mammoth event SummitFX 2020 has brought the world together to explore the next big ideas and advance India’s participation on the world stage. He is now championing policy and strategy across online games, eSports and the immersive media opportunities.

One of the best examples of the outcome of Biren’s strategy is Technicolor’s very early innovation of Virtual Production which is today becoming the ‘holy grail’ of this industry. Using game engine technologies to emulate live-action film production in a VR space, this technology helps to conceptualize each frame even before the shoot or CG shots are executed.

Strategy for him goes beyond building profitable institutions - which he has done admirably. He sees that the path to greater growth and success comes from constant innovation and learnings; and creating an environment that takes everyone along. He sees that a strong creative value proposition and an ‘artist first’ culture is what talent looks for and thrives on. He has created this positive atmosphere within his studio and among the communities he corrals together on various platforms. A good strategy for him is one that delivers value to all parties involved. His missionary mindset shines through in the dedication with which he works at his studio’s growth trajectory (qualitatively and quantitatively). This is visible and appreciated by his clients and colleagues. Beyond this, he has reached out to build bridges with agencies in the social sector – he is a firm believer that the digital arts industry can create huge opportunities to those socioeconomically challenged. Technicolor and the trade bodies he leads have a deep sense of social responsibility and have come forward at various times when a crisis has affected the marginalised and needy. He believes at the foundation of every good balance sheet is a heart and soul!

A Futurist &

Visionary A

s the tools to create stories are exploding, Biren sees this paradigm shift in the new age of immersive content. An age where people intend to become their own heroes and participate in their own adventures. Creating those digital ‘boys and girls’ will enable people to take storytelling to an unbelievable level of extreme personalization. The world of digital humans is here! The digital world has transformed from its conventional 100 years of making movies with a camera. The CG world has taken the magic from in front of the camera to extraordinary heights; and has taken the creation of imagery to what goes on inside and behind it! The world is filling up on digital memories. Biren works in the world where imagery helps people make new ones. “We must never venture so far that makes people unhappy in a world that bears poor resemblance to reality”, says Biren.

“Today’s world is about taking something you love and turning it into a billion-dollar idea!”, believes Biren. He also feels that automation is an enabler and the Cloud, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence and other technologies emerging rapidly have become a massive augmentation to human talent. For him, the lessons learnt through the way people design computer games (seeking to get the user to play for many hours and to encourage, even induce them to play for longer hours and evaluate what engages them) is the best indicator of what the future of the media portends. Genres like eSports are already showing us how the parallel world is becoming a part of our daily digital life. The image making industry with its savvy in simulation is now becoming a prime asset to several industries outside of entertainment. Many of the projects Biren’s team works on straddle the needs of brands that seek breakthrough ideas to enhance their own value through experimentation in communication formats.

Biren believes that a strong creative value proposition and an ‘artist first’ culture is what talent looks for and thrives on and he has created this positive atmosphere within his studio and among the communities he corrals together on various platforms. 29

Business is

equal to

Talent A

fter having spent over a decade in the VFX and animation business, Biren feels that there is a significant challenge in getting the best out of the artistic talent available in India. He believes that this is because of India’s evolution from a manufacturing mindset that needed to produce the basics to now, 75 years later, finding itself at a juncture where people are required to not just be “good workers” but also “creative thinkers”. “As a company, we have achieved scale at Technicolor India by constantly building our leadership team and encouraging them to innovate and try new approaches. We are testimony to the growth of the knowledge industries in India that move up that value chain and enable India to take a dominant position in a technology enabled business that we have brought platform thinking savvy to, while protecting its creative core”, he once told Pickle in an interview.

Biren predicts that with the right impetus and incentives, the service sector for Animation, VFX and Games can more than double the growth rate for the AVGC sector and make it an INR 1 Trillion sector by 2025–2026. It is widely believed that in the production services of Animation, Visual effects and Games, the business is all about talent. According to Biren, students with restless minds and determination, far from being encouraged and leveraged for their curiosity and their youthful energy are ignored; and there is a historical stigma attached to those who do not follow ‘cookiecutter’ professions due to the mindset of older generations. Also, there is scant priority, understanding and exposure to the potential of the arts as career. “The dogma of an outdated system of educating people and developing their skillsets [with a skew to the left brain] is totally inadequate and self-limiting. We need to transform education in the new digital age in a way that prepares the youth for jobs of the future”, he believes. He thinks that the Indian content and creative industry of Film & TV needs a RESET - to think and act anew. The business of creativity where ideas, visualization and ‘out of the ordinary’ creative initiatives are of paramount importance; and this needs for young minds to be encouraged to experiment and grow. We need for each artist in the profession to work to a level of confidence in a way that they can interpret the task through their own craft to such a high level that they would be able to sell their ideas and creativity for a living”, he suggests.

Making India

a Global hub for M&E

“India is eminently placed to be the top global service provider when it comes to games, particularly in the high-tech disciplines”, according to Biren. He believes that India is well-placed to enable the world’s content creation across all genres and serve producers and studios with digital imagery. “We have fully demonstrated our prowess across all disciplines and the world is now increasingly beating a path to our door in the emerging technologies that need even more ‘fire power’ and scalable talent and production platforms”, he observed in a recent interaction.

According to Biren, “Given the recent boost and recognition by the Indian government identifying the digital audio -visual services as a ‘champion sector’, there is an immense opportunity to boost exports exponentially.” Biren predicts that with the right impetus and incentives, the service sector for Animation, VFX and Games can more than double the growth rate for the AVGC sector and make it an INR 1 Trillion sector by 2025 - 2026. Ever the evangelist for the Indian M&E industry, he has for many years advocated that India stands the best chance of becoming a premier global powerhouse - “the engine room” for digital content production. He believes that the AVGC sector has a great opportunity by extending the craft of image making to help further evolve sectors like AR/VR, XR, online gaming and eSports. Biren believes that the Media and Entertainment sector must drive Indian industry’s 4.0 ambition. This industry should become at least 2.5 - 3% of the country’s GDP which would create another 1.5 - 2 million jobs and become an aspirational haven of opportunity for India’s burgeoning youth. He also notes that from being a success story as a “services hub”, India must also begin its transition to becoming a key player in IP development by providing a thrust to home grown projects, brands and startups. A greater reckoning of M&E as an industry with enabling legislation that is pragmatic and beneficial to consumers, is what he keeps advocating at every opportunity. He is one of the founders of the Indian AVGC industry and a relentless campaigner helping it to make its mark worldwide.

Memories of your childhood/ school “I was in some amazing schools. Besides the obvious academic curriculum, it was my involvement in some of the extracurricular activities that really shaped my personality and helped me become the person I am later in my adulthood. Elocution, debating, acting in plays, participating in drama and playing all the games - cricket, tennis, rugby and hockey have shaped my sporting outlook and personality. It has rightly been said that through our schooling and formative years, we are naturally creative; and that we need to be given “freedom materials” and space to let our innate creativity blossom. I was fortunate that my parents, teachers and even my school principal were attentive to and spotted the potential I had. They encouraged me giving me a guitar, enrolling me in a series of learning classes; giving me a second home at a swish sports club to swim, play squash & tennis and generally develop the skills that build the mind & body connection, in preparation for later life’s challenges. The several years of playing tennis and later competitive squash at a national level has taught me to take chances in life as they come. To stretch to keep in the game and to hit every ball that comes to me; no matter how much of a stretch it seems and to give it my best shot. Timing is everything!

In shaping my early career, it was Peter Drucker, whose seminal and iconic work spanning several decades as someone who made management a “profession” and whose work I devoured even as a young executive. In the management profession itself for several years now, Bill Gates is one of my heroes. He is the “complete package” as a leader. In business, technology & innovation he is a lighthouse. Over and above his accomplishments in the field of technology, his passion and organisation for and of his philanthropic interests are even more spectacular. He brings to everything he does an intensityto pick on a theme and apply his “hacker mindset”, that makes him create ideas and strategies that are so powerful and yet so elegantly and comprehensively executed.

Where did you get all your positivity and energy (anytime, anywhere)?

One needs to learn to develop confidence in oneself - learn to believe in yourself a little more everyday. My father was a very positive individual and always believed in taking the next step, however difficult the situation. Through him I learned that life can be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards! Maturity is to win by getting over the humps –stopping to battle things that get you stuck could make you get stuck in even further. I avoid what saps my positive energy. Although the human body has limitations, our human spirit is limitless. We need to respect the limitations of our physicality, but there are several ways to keep our energies and momentum going by surrounding ourselves with positivity and keep moving towards the next goalposts. By doing that we can always be the flame that lights many a candle and then bask in its illumination! 36

How did you develop an interest in music?

My grandaunt was an accomplished pianist (I still have her 100 year old imported piano from George Rogers & Sons, London); and I had western classical music embedded in my consciousness from before I could even walk, sitting beside her as she played masterfully! At the same time, from my earliest recollection, my mother had a stack - literally 100s of 78 RPM records of various artists and she would have music playing from as far back as I remember. That stash gave way to the 331/3 RPM LPs. I have always filled my head and my soul with every genre you can think of across jazz, pop, blues, rock & roll, big band, orchestral, dance and classical music from everywhere in the world. At about 13, I started to make friends with folks that were like-minded and we bonded over music. I had an AKAI M-7 spool tape deck in my bedroom. All through high school and college, I recorded a vast collection of music at 7½ speed as it gave me better dynamic range. My wife and daughters are also very musical and that’s something that we all share. I have travelled the world often to musical events in New Orleans, the North Sea Jazz Festival and to many other venues to hear those that have inspired me for years. Hearing Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, John Pizzarelli, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Eagles, James Taylor, Taj Mahal, Elton John, Carlos Santana, José Feliciano and many others have brought life and a feeling of attainment for having heard my musical heroes. Putting a guitar in my had at 14 was another life changing moment.

How did you develop your love for wine and fine cuisine? My grandfather would have a glass of port, right from when I can remember him in the early 60’s. My father liked a glass of beer or a good scotch; and my mother was fond of an occasional glass of sherry. I joined the wine & spirits trade when I was about 30 years old and developed a more nuanced understanding of the technical aspects, as a consequence of my professional involment with the trade for over a decade in the mid-80’s. Single malts were both then and now a major passion. I started collecting wines and got to know more about them in the past 15 years as some of my friends are connoisseurs. We have helped develop a nice community of like-minded wine aficionados who meet and work with the best establishments to curate pairings and vertical tastings. We challenge ourselves to progress a better understanding and enlarge the acceptance of wines in India. My mother was very fond of a variety of cuisine. From the time I was 10, she would take me on school holidays to a number of restaurants for a morning coffee session or lunch to the finest restaurants in Bombay and Calcutta; and that has helped me develop my palette and my fondness for good food. Over the years, we also had the privilege of having some excellent help at home whose only job was to cook the three meals a day, that ranged from cooking Continental to Burmese to the fine traditions from all across India.

How and where did you start your career?

I was determined to follow my father’s footsteps and become someone in Sales and Marketing. I got into three blue chip companies and chose USHA (Dr. Charat Ram’s management portfolio of the legendary DCM Shriram Group), as it arguably had the best Management Trainee program in the country. The rigor that followed, as well as the fast-track elevation for a young executive certainly confirmed that reputation. Over 4 years, I found myself starting out in Gujarat, where I had to travel 3 weeks a month selling fans and sewing machines across the State to the most astute dealer network, whose negotiation skills are the best I have ever been pitted against. The reward for surviving that stint promoted me to a regional job across Western India; and a few years later catapulted me to a National desk in Marketing and Sales in the New Delhi HQ. That was an amazing entrée into the world of business.

You have moved across industries throughout you career – how and why did that happen?

40

You cannot create experiences – it’s something you must undergo! Experiences are transportable, so long as you are prepared to change your thinking with the time and the occasion. You take knowledge that has come from the hard knocks of previous experiences; and you use them to diffuse or predict the knocks as they come around again in a different situation. I was not a particularly good student in a bookish-academic sense, but the schooling I gleaned from bad decisions and instances of failure or missteps has provided me a greater lesson than any literature or classroom could ever provide. I went to jobs that seemed to be difficult - I put my hand up to work on what seemed pioneering but difficult assignments, because that was a fast track to grow ahead of the linear hierarchical ladder of the old school corporate system. One of the reasons I would readily jump into those challenging assignments is because it would test my innate creativity and people skills. Sunrise sectors, starting projects or companies and launching a new category of products or services is where I have ventured boldly and do not have any regrets about that strategy even in hindsight!

Your entry into media happened only in 1999. How did that happen?

Serendipity! The best things in life have happened to me when I wasn’t looking for them - at least consciously. I wanted to exit Dubai, I was selling off my start-up detergent manufacturing company and needed to get the kids into high school in Bombay. I was introduced to Ronnie Screwvala and after two meetings in Mumbai, we decided to dive into the internet 1.0 space. India would have punished me in any business having been away for 7 years to a smaller and less evolved market. But here was a sector - the Dot Com, where everyone was starting out. It was a game changing - life changing experience and I have never looked back!

24 years in the media and entertainment space! What makes you stick here?

What’s 24 years? It depends on your perspective! You may know that on Mercury, the same number of days would have just added up to 39 years; on Mars it would be 13 years and on Saturn not even 1 year. So time periods are relative. To launch and propel a space craft, we need liquid hydrogen for fuel and in my case my passion for animation and the digital arts is the “liquid hydrogen” that propels me through the ‘mediaverse’. Being in media is like being in a spaceship! My trajectory makes me feel like I am hurtling through space and time, just in the way the technology and storytelling industry keeps revolving and evolving. From my base camp on planet earth, the imagery we create and the movies and content we create takes me on these journeys to a massive constellation where I am discovering new planets. Computing power and human imagination come together to help me discover new celestial environments. Storytellers always deliberately endeavor to expand the boundaries of their universe. The art of inventing new imagery takes us out of our comfort zones and gets our hearts pumping while we leap over those familiar fences into unknown magical landscapes. Those in this spaceship are never daunted by the question “I wonder what it would be like” or “if only we could……..”, because we thrive on inventing the answers by risking all of our creativity as we interpret each story and craft it to produce spectacular outcomes. Why would I ever want to get off this spaceship?

Do any of the things that used to upset you a few years ago matter at all today? What’s changed?

I am a larger-than-life personality. People see what they want to see; and what they see need not be the truth. It’s got to a point where I often chose not to explain myself. It’s ironic because when I come on strong, I am counselled to stay quiet. But when I am quiet, they ask me what’s wrong. I think age and the confidence in my achievements has made me thick-skinned. The things that used to make me worried or scared get replaced with new things to worry about. Worry is what change brings your way for free and there is no anti-worry vaccine!

How is life without travel (outside India) in Covid-19 times It has rightly been said that travel is a state of mind. It’s got nothing to do with our existence. It’s made out to be exotic, but I believe it’s an inner experience. I have had my best ideas sitting on long flights looking into oblivion. I compose - I plan - I relax. My yoga sessions and the short driving breaks to a beach or a hill resort have given me the same tonic. In my mind, I am still going several places. I was once told that we don’t travel to escape life, but to ensure that life doesn’t escape us. I will continue to travel both in astral and physical terms!

What goals do you want to achieve? Goals in life are an age and stage thing. For 2021, here’s my list (In 2025, ask me again!). Setting goals for oneself needs to be a more serious exercise than the proverbial new year resolutions that seem to be written in vanishing ink. Here goes:  To continue to grow through a positive mindset while retaining my trademark sense of proportion and balance.  To continue to evangelize the Indian Media and Entertainment industry and help the digital production space (Animation, VFX, Games and Immersive) grow 3 times in the next 5 years.  To provide leadership and contribute to developing the community through social service. To develop, mobilize and support initiatives that add value and provide future opportunity to those less advantaged, preferably through arts-based education & technology.  To remember that there is meaning and purpose that is greater than myself. To stay true to my beliefs and leverage my lineage that has taught me to embrace many faiths. To be of service and bring hope and the ‘promise of a future’ to loved ones.

Congratulations on being awarded the National Order of Merit (Chevalier Award) by the French Government) for your decades of dedication to furthering India-France collaboration. Please tell us about your source of inspiration and what this award means to you? Thank you! It is truly an honour. I have had the privilege of building some strong French connections through participation in several industry dialogues and meetings with government officials from both the countries. I have hosted and been hosted by many a French delegations and dignitaries at both individual and industry level. I believe being part of the global media industry - telling stories that transcend borders and connect creative communities, inspires me to strengthen bonds between our two countries. But the real value of an honour like this lies in what you do with it after receiving it. We have been advancing our common agenda of leveraging opportunities that would add impactful and sustainable value to both our economies. I am pleased to redouble those efforts to create

a more vibrant channel for collaboration. By connecting our media industries, we can make a difference beyond just entertainment. Our industries have the potential to draw collateral benefits by 51

influencing social upliftment, cultural cross fertilization and enabling livelihood through education.

I suggest the formation of a Media & Entertainment task force “France-India Group for Innovation & Technology” [FIGIT]. This group will focus on identifying and defining the imperatives that will champion outcomes in key sectors and initiatives.

I am grateful to my employers Technicolor, and to my industry - Animation, VFX and Games - for having enabled and encouraged me to make a special connection with France. entertainment industry in France is expected to see a CAGR of 7.9% during the period (2019-2025). We must use each other’s unique strengths for a mutually beneficial cooperation, especially as we move towards a year of recovery from the pandemic.

India and France have strong bilateral partnerships and friendly relations. How do you see this growing particularly in the converged Media and Entertainment segment, especially in a post-COVID scenario? What are the synergies that will grow partnership between both the countries? Bilateral relations between India and France have been growing over the last decade. Bilateral trade

between the two countries witnessed an uptick to reach USD 10.75 billion in 2020. We

must find a way to boost the areas of growth and opportunities for both countries to create a market for each other and to see how by combining their strengths they can find synergies to take to other global markets.

France is not among India’s top 20 trading partners and this can well be considered an opportunity for our industry.

There is also a heightened French interest in establishing themselves in the Asian market, including in India, and this cooperation could act as a springboard. Similarly, France could act as a European gateway for India through alliances and collaborations. For the Media and Entertainment sector, there are a slew of opportunities for strategic partnerships. India

The year 2020 underscored that nations and economies are intertwined in more ways than we acknowledge; and that only speed and agility can help us move forward through unforeseen times. For the M&E sector globally, this pandemic was inventive as we saw a revolution in what sectors grew and which ones faltered. The rise in demand from OTT platforms and consequently the changing trends of content creation, localisation and consumption had to play catch up to the growing need to provide audiences a great experience from the safety of their homes.

The online gaming revenue in France grew by 22% yearon-year in the first quarter of 2020 itself. India’s online gaming industry is set to touch $2.8 billion in revenues by 2022 and is witnessing explosive growth. dispensation for such a corridor and similarly in France, the tax credits system needs to allow for a greater portion of work share with India such that the tax credits do not fall away for the French participants. This will lead to the opening up of flood gates as producers, studios and investors will see the benefits apply to the ventures and projects created in such a France India Media

as one of the first two countries that gave birth to cinema, we recognise the need to take the moving image to its new dimensions and envision the next 100 years of content across all platforms and screens.

The Summit will stimulate the media ecosystem and its stakeholders both in India and France, as it features industry

stalwarts and policymakers to realise the potential that lies in collaborative opportunities in the coming times. This engagement needs to start through a structured dialogue at the highest level of government and industry that can then help the targeted sectors invite tangible partners and projects.

A professional board with nodal officers from both sides entrusted with 7 to 10 identified thrust areas and defined time frames is the hope I hold out for such a programme.

Do you see prospects in skills and training in AVGC segments between the two countries? India evolved from total dependency to substantial self-reliance in its first 50 to 60 years of independence.

The same impetus is now

needed to catalyse socioeconomic development in this next phase of growth. I believe

knowledge sharing is a significant aspect of strategic collaboration between the two countries. French

companies have employed over a quarter of a million people in India for many decades. India’s youth power makes for a far greater potential in this regard and we must identify areas to bring the youth of both countries, and in particular, women, to join the workforce in digital arts and sciences and media studies.

France has an array of world-class animation and arts schools that have a global reputation and an aspirational value attached to them. India has one of the youngest populations in the world currently and these youngsters are making decisions for themselves in terms of opting for “non-conventional” career paths. We need engagement models to take the knowledge from these sought after schools and find ways to hybridize and scale these learning methods to new universes like India.

India and France have both evolved from agrarian to manufacturing economy and in the past couple of decades, to a knowledge lead, service-based economy. We need to find areas of convergence in skilling; and ways to make the corridor play to our mutual and complementary strengths. For example, in animation, France

has an array of world-class animation and arts schools that have global reputation with aspirational values attached to them. India has

like to see where MoUs between

India’s National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) and the National Commission for Vocational Qualifications (Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - CNCD) of France currently lie. France would certainly make a great partner country in the realm of digital arts – design, animation and the creative arts and sciences.

one the youngest populations in the world currently and these youngsters are making decisions for themselves in terms of opting for unconventional career paths.

We need engagement models to take the knowledge from these sought-after schools and find ways to hybridize and scale these learning methods to new universes like India. Increasingly, Indian students are choosing France for their higher French education and the

government is aiming at attracting 20,000 students to their country by 2025.

Many international schools have been trying to collaborate and start courses for animation in India, but the outcomes have been sporadic. Skilling India is a national priority. We have not been able to anticipate and design curriculums that would fit the jobs of the future. I would

How is the startup culture in India and France different, especially in the entertainment space? Both India and France have a strong entrepreneurial vigour and the governments have been working towards realising this momentum through pragmatic policy making. France, in fact, has an exemplary conducive policy ecosystem that is sensitive to the core needs of new age startups. For one, there is a certain degree of ease in funding and availing capital that French startups enjoy. In India, startups are required to focus on monetisation, revenue and lean operations from the outset and that often eclipses the ‘big idea’. France also recognises significance of startups in the job market, while in India working for a startup is still considered a tough bet. Taking note of the value addition of startups in terms of innovation during the pandemic, France announced a comprehensive plan for its startups last year, including a decision to temporarily bridge the funding gap, through refinancing and liquidity measures of around USD 4.3 billion. Measures like a short-term working scheme to avoid layoffs where employees receive 84% to 100% of their salary (the government reimburses companies) go a long way in providing French startups a thrust during the initial shaping years. As India’s startup

space matures further, the French model will be a guiding light for propelling the impact that startups can make to the national economy. Similarly, the ‘Startup India’ plan launched by the Government of India in January 2016 has seen about 40 thousand startups employing around 470 thousand people with Rs. 4509 crores (about Euro 490 million) dispensed through funds of funds to 384 start ups till December 2020. This shows the institutional’s will and determination to make startups an engine of growth in India. 57

I want to use this platform to gain momentum and seek support for the ideas that some of us have been germinating for a while now.

India and France have some of the finest film shooting locations? Do you see collaboration on this front? Of the many things that set Bollywood and other Indian regional films aside from other film industries across the globe, the most striking is perhaps the larger than life experience that many Indian movies provide their audiences – the ones that let them dream, aspire and take a blissful break from the monotony of everyday life. Offshore locations are invariably quintessential to making an Indian film, a blockbuster. One would like to think that perhaps it’s not just about the

grandeur of foreign locations that attracts audiences. They also provide a glimpse of the local culture and aesthetics of a country or a city; it can well be considered a virtual trip! France is decorated with many picturesque locations that appeal to the aspiration side of Indians.

India on the other hand provides a host of locations and the diversity of culture, which is the real magnet.

Both India and France must work towards incentivising offshore shoots which will not only add value to their movies but will also lead to a larger cultural exchange between the two countries.

The UK has had a wonderful scheme that has attracted dozens of productions and the coverage and rebates go well beyond just locale. Tax relief is available on qualifying UK production expenditure on the lower of either 80% of total core expenditure or the actual UK core expenditure incurred. There is no cap on the amount which can be claimed. We need to work

out appropriate mechanisms that will make this proposed Indo-French Media Corridor equally or more attractive.

India has signed an audiovisual co-production treaty with France (in early Nineties) that has not been used to its full potential. How do we strengthen co-production prospects between India and France (which will give room for extended European collaboration)? Leonardo Da Vinci was an amazing futurist! He made illustrations of the future by drawing images that appeared strange and improbable at the time. These visual metaphors gave way to inventions that are part of our daily life today. We, in the audio-visual business, should find it more pertinent to graphically illustrate our future by scoping where our industry is headed and its needs over the next 5 to 10 years. We are required to constantly anticipate new consumer choices and devices, adapt stories so

Indian students are choosing France for their higher education and the French government is aiming at attracting 20,000 students to their country by 2025. 58

that they can be culturally more universal; innovate and evolve new technologies for imagery and simulation that make contemporary storytelling through AR, VR Games and other immersive media more potent and overwhelming. There

is an ongoing race between countries to get the lion’s share of the content creation needed by the new platform model with OTTs becoming the snowballing sector. The complementary skills of India and France would make for an amazing alliance and we need to build

a framework to accelerate digital media partnerships focussing on creative technology endeavours. To

make way for such a fertile ground for artists and storytellers to ideate and execute projects, I am suggesting a “Digital Media Story Lab”

as an innovation centre of excellence to be established for the creative industries on both sides to flourish.

We must have a policy framework and only then will a treaty become an enabler. Policies and treaties

must however be “living” documents that reflect and are amended with the changing times. The India and

France audio-visual co-production treaty is aimed at facilitating mutual exchange of projects for production and resonates with the overarching idea of a corridor. However, many of the structural ideas need to get in place for us to make a treaty work out. The treaty itself is antiquated in many respects as to what it covers and enables.

This policy, referred to above, should be preceded with a request for submissions through a formal process of inviting ideas for synergies, new avenues for transcontinental workshare, new virtual production platforms and tools; and the establishment of the technology infrastructure & facilities for the rendering, storage and transmission of images to bring those ideas to life in film, TV and new media. We must realise that the

basket of opportunities is now far greater in the new digital world than in the days of physical production which was primarily the strong suite in the previous/current policy. The two countries have apparently already agreed to set up a

joint working group towards discussing ways and means

59

to co-produce films and collaborate on audio visual exchanges. We must ensure that such discussion forums open the conversation to the very top level of industry leaders.

Such scaling is about experimentation and selection. The more opportunities we create and the more ideas we elicit, the more fertile the ground becomes thereby increasing our chances of successful outcomes. I believe in the saying “Nail It Then Scale It” as a key to entrepreneurial success.

We must find a way to boost the areas of growth and opportunities for both countries to create a market for each other and to see how by combining their strengths they can find synergies to take to other global markets.

What according to you are the three things that Indians and French love about each other’s countries? India is home to over one sixth of the world’s people. We are the ultimate model to the world of a democracy where freedom, peace and progress are the foundations of our political system. The world’s

future must therefore in some ways be linked to the future of India and how countries collaborate with India. France has been very supportive of India’s candidacy for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council to ensure global equilibrium. The people of France share this belief and commitment towards Indians.

France has for the past 500 years played a key role in cinema, literature, social sciences, cuisine, and technology; and India shares some of these cultural priorities. Both our countries are comprised of many regions and subcultures making it difficult to generalise what people like about each other. However, let me say that the following would be a partial list of areas that are of interest to both sides – design and architecture;

food and alcoholic beverages; sports like football; fashion; art and cinema. So let me take a broad swipe at your question. I would say that:

 Both Indians and French

are

passionate

people.

They are passionate about their language[s], their food, their country and most importantly their diversity. I feel that this

passion brings the right balance between national pride and the acceptance of diversity in both countries.  Both India and France have a promising economy and have so many points of connect in that regard. Aerospace is the

60

heavyweight of the French industry and India’s Aerospace and Defence market is on a high growth trajectory, expected to reach $70 billion by 2030. There is a massive well-

governed cadence of Science and Technology research in the areas of Mathematics, Computational sciences, Health sciences & Biotech, Environmental sciences, Water and other key areas under jointly funded programmes. We need to author similar joint initiatives like the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/ CEFIPRA) set up in 1987 between both governments for the media and entertainment and creative industries space.  Fashion is another area

that has brought Indians and French closer. While we

in India are great fans of French cosmetic and clothing brands, the French are equally very fond of Indian motifs, fabrics and dress designs which are now seen adorned by their locals and also bejewel the runways and aisles of the most coveted French catwalks and boutiques.

Essentially, both Indians and

the French have a history of traditions that they take pride in and that define them as a society, globally. We share the same broad outlook, values and cultural codes - we only see them through our different prisms!

Maps change when new information becomes forthcoming and I see that France and India will, through

a media and entertainment corridor, be located as “adjoining countries” in the new map of the entertainment world. Both our countries like to challenge what is and inspire what could be and this spirit can be exemplified through greater cooperation.

Biren is a pillar of the French economic community in India, and more than this, with his strong connections with the media marketplaces in Cannes and Annecy, contributes to build bridges between our two countries, our culture and our people. His friendship and guidance has been of great help during my tenure in India. I have to mention that Biren is a great friend of French culture also through his gastronomic involvements with wines and spirits. He is a worthy partner of France in India and accordingly should wear this medal with pride. Francois Gautier Counsellor at the French Mission to the OECD

Congratulations Biren on your French knighthood. As a product of La Martiniere College, Calcutta you were already a beneficiary of a French grant in your schooling days! I also recall that you were a Management Trainee at USHA in the Shriram group - and this is another example of just how foundational that program has been. It’s been fascinating to catch up with you from time to time and more recently to hear about how digital content creation in India has gone places. You have been at the forefront of that revolution in Indian animation with UTV and more recently at Technicolor. I am confident that you will continue to reach for new heights. I have known Biren from the time he started his sojourn in animation. India was a startup nation in this field and he was one of the pioneers. His transition through all types of animation into the world of digital computer graphics and expanding into VFX and games is a testimony to his resilience and patience in leading the companies he served, but more importantly carrying the community of studios and artists along on that journey to build the Indian ecosystem. I am delighted he has been conferred a knighthood by the French Government. Many of our meetings have been in France at the markets for Film and TV and his achievements in building a world class team for Technicolor is deserving of every praise. I know Biren will use this to further his efforts to build stronger ties between France and India. Joan Vogelesang Joan Vogelesang Consultants and Former CEO of Toon Boom Animation , Canada

sPotliGht Biren | Cheers froM the industry

Biren has been one of my principal “go to” industry contacts in India for many years. I have watched and admired his journey in animation, his concern for the artists and the community in which he takes such pride. We are fellow travelers (in the pre pandemic world) and always find the time to catch up and compare notes on what’s trending in our ever-changing industry. I have visited his studio in India and enjoyed meeting many members of his team; the studio atmosphere, the youthful, electric energy of the staff reflects how he and his leadership team have built such a world class organization. His strategic vision is grounded in his fundamental understanding of both the market and the realities of the highly competitive animation production business. The French knighthood is a great honor and Biren is highly deserving. I know Biren will use this to continue his efforts during the difficult times the country and community are facing today. Hearty congratulations to Mr Biren Ghose for the the Ordre National du Mérite award. I had the pleasure of interacting with Mr Biren Ghose and have known his work for many years when he tirelessly worked to turbo charge the growth of Technicolor in India into the world’s largest computer graphics hub in the industry. It has been a tremendous achievement of transitioning from realizing a commendable vision to creating a structure that consistently produces value. The process required Biren’s time, attention and experimentation to understand what truly works for Technicolor. I am delighted that he has been duly recognized for his exceptional contribution to the technology of entertainment. Dr. S. Biren has an entrepreneurial streak and this makes him look at constructing the future in ways that are less about “business as usual”! He has a bold strategic approach to “build for scale” - his trademark style. He has a demonstratable track record of iconic outcomes. His Technicolor stint is testimony to that in recent times. He is a significant contributor to the way India is now recognised globally in this field. Getting the National Order of Merit is a wonderful recognition of this journey in media and I wish him continued success. Cheers Biren! Rajesh Jog Managing Partner, Waygate Capital

Biren is a recognized leader in India’s animation ecosystem! In the time I have known him he is full of ideas and energy and the determination to make things happen. At Eros, in the short time he was there, he was engaged across all of our film projects adding value to the top flight partners we dealt with and bringing process and structure in a difficult market. This was our foray into the studio model and he was involved in this very strategic phase of our growth. He then continued to pursue his love for animation and has scaled the studios for Technicolor over the past 10 years, making it a globally recognized and highly awarded center for VFX and animation. I congratulate him on the French National Order of Merit. Kishore Lulla Executive Director and Executive Chairman of Eros International Plc

A very happy soul, Biren lives life in a series of jolly episodes - both professionally and personally - and has been responsible for India’s ‘meteoric’ rise to becoming a part of the Animation Constellation. In Bangalore, Biren runs one of the most diverse, high-end computer graphics shops in the world and regularly shares his wisdom and learnings with a global platform - taking us on many ‘space-like’ missions to Bangalore for industry events. I have personally witnessed the excitement and passion in his team at Technicolor India, that partners with and produces projects prolifically with world leaders. They also are the proud winners of every major award annually! So winning the French National Order of Merit calls for another Biren-style celebration, and I can’t wait for safer times to make the journey for that celebration! Biren is a friend and a strong supporter of women in tech. He has not only created one of the world’s most amazing studios for animation and VFX but is also a true example of how we can create better opportunities to “bridge the gap” and have more women in technology industries like the digital arts. He epitomises how promoting women in a certain field should not be limited to memos and forums, but should be all about measurable actions that start right from one’s own workplace. Biren is a great representation of Wequity’s Equalizer – a male sponsor whose voice and work has driven gender equity and progressed women in tech. At Technicolor India, he has let women unleash their creative talents and technological know-how to produce some world class content and more importantly, get their due recognition and credit for their work. Biren has been at helm of the great projects that have won the most coveted awards in media and entertainment and this is commendable. For our company, his amazing studio has one of the largest clusters of high end artists in CG animation and VFX in the world. We have always benefited from his guidance and leadership at Technicolor India and he is also very involved in the industry forums as a futurist in the field. He has been a keynote speaker at the Autodesk University a few years ago which was a super hit with the massive community in attendance. As a firm believer of team work, he always manages to create a conducive channel for different parties to collaborate whilst pushing the next generation of imagery across all the brands and client work they do every day. We, at Autodesk, and especially myself on behalf of Autodesk France, would like to congratulate Biren on the National Order of Merit, one of the most prestigious and respected honor from the Republic of France! I have known Biren from the time he started his sojourn in media business about 20 years ago. He was a Director in a new media startup which was funded by the global venture capital fund I worked with. His passion for animation is reflected in the long and successful innings he has been playing taking India and his company Technicolor to a great success from what was a small presence in India. His leadership has now been recognised through this knighthood and my congratulations to him on that achievement. Transitioning through all types of animation into the world of digital computer graphics and expanding into VFX and games is a testimony to his resilience and patience in leading the companies he served, but more importantly carrying the community of studios and artists along on that journey to build the Indian ecosystem. I congratulate him on his journey - of being an evangelist with a dogged determination to put India on the global animation and VFX map. Biren has an eye for talent and an undaunted will to nurture it. As someone with a creative outlook to life, he has always believed in allowing young talents express themselves freely before getting into complexities; he lets their ideas breathe. Our students have been hired by the DreamWorks Dedicated Unit at Technicolor Bangalore many years ago and Biren has played a pivotal role in inspiring young minds by sparing no opportunity to interact and work with them. He was on the Gobelins Programme with Netflix India and has been trying to develop links between the government in Bangalore and our institution. He was at our graduation event in 2018 and he is an inspiration to many young minds. This most recent feat of winning the National Order of Merit will help drive future initiatives. His role in creating a knowledge bridge between both our countries is admirable. Congratulations Biren on the knighthood from France! Why A Policy for AVGC in India? by biren ghose To prioritize growth, we need guardrails ensuring fairness and ease of redressal mechanisms by enabling legislation and policy. Media is perhaps the most powerful influencer providing information and enjoyment. Its authority therefore needs a clear and evolving articulation

C

ivilization has always evolved through the arts. Over time, the arts shape minds and hearts into a set of beliefs. The arts have incredible influence. Art and culture have been shaped by the size of the theater, the seating capacity of stadiums and in recent times by the number of subscribers or downloads in the new digital. India has over 500 million people now powered by digital devices; their smartphones and their computers are fed by content platforms like OTT, games and social media. The velocity of change in contemporary arts both reflects and shapes modern culture. Indians downloaded over 200 million apps in 2020. Very often, policies governing the media today may seem like a spoiler or antediluvian in this context. The proliferation of new technologies and new verticals therefore demand strategic thinking and understanding the need for policies to constantly play catch-up. The enormity of scale, speed and spread of new technologies and verticals have become overwhelming for any single authority to preside over. In India, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is the gatekeeper for content. The ramifications of any policy now affect and concern several stakeholders including the Department of Commerce and Industry when it

140

comes to foreign investment [specially in sensitive areas]; the Ministry of Information Technology when it comes to cybersecurity, code of ethics and access rights; the Ministry of Consumer Affairs regarding standards to ensure protection of the consumer in what brands promote and how they promote this through advertisements [liquor, cigarettes, etc.]; the TRAI which prescribes the guidance on license fees for radio and even matters concerning intellectual property [IP] which have their own appellate board. Doesn’t this make the case, therefore, for policy to have a far more unified framework in a converged digital media economy. We will need to continuously maintain the balance to ensure that brands and businesses grow their franchises, while keeping on the right side of compliance and ensuring that the privacy of the state and the consumer is not violated. Therefore, to prioritize growth, we need guardrails ensuring fairness and ease of redressal mechanisms by enabling legislation and policy. Media is perhaps the most powerful influencer providing information and enjoyment. Its authority therefore needs a clear and evolving articulation. The minds of a billion Indians are being influenced by content and hence we need to contemporize this industry in the new economic context.
