THE AGE OF INNOCENCE 4  Fine Art Collector  SPRING 2010

Self-taught artist, Keith Proctor, unveils his début collection of delightful and evocative figuratives portraying the simple innocence and freedom of childhood

JACK THE LAD  It's A Man Thing

Canvas edition of 195 Image 24" x 17" Framed £399

KEiTH HAS HAD a deep love of art ever since he was a child. He started drawing at a very young age guided by his late father, commercial artist Mark proctor. "My dad set me right as far as sketching is concerned," he said. "He taught me never to draw a straight line and to always break lines up, and I follow his advice to this day. Knowing how to draw fairly well is important, but I think it's vital to learn to paint naturally and learn from your own mistakes." His debut collection for Washington Green, Jack the Lad, is inspired by his young son Jack, but gloriously encapsulates the natural innocence, instinct, curiosity and joyous spontaneity of all children - everyone's son or grandson. "For me children are free spirits without the weight of the world on their shoulders yet. They are truly natural and that's what I always try to portray in my paint-

ings – the simple innocence and freedom of childhood.." Jack is also the source of some of the titles for the paintings such as 'Bzzz', which, says Keith, is an instant, natural, honest response to what he sees. Letting children develop in their own natural way is something Keith deeply believes in. "When children are very young their minds are open to everything, and seeing Jack very deep in thought one day put me in mind of how Einstein was a little boy once too. I tried to epitomise all the future possibilities that there are at this age in 'I Have A Dream', with green chalking on the ground next to Jack's feet spelling out E = MC² and pink chalking depicting the peace symbol." Since the mid 80s Keith has earned his living as an artist. His first job was working from a little barrow at the Metrocentre SpRING 2010 FInE ART COLLECTOR 5

shopping centre in Gateshead where he painted portraits of dogs - and his passion for painting couldn't have been more evident: He worked seven days a week, 10 hours a day, and with no car at the time, he left home at four in the morning to get there. After two and a half years at the shopping centre it was time to move on and he began painting landscapes and Newcastle street scenes. His ideas come from real life observations but he now increasingly works from photos instead of visiting locations for his landscapes over and over – including 200 visits to the Tyne Bridge! "For a while I was painting my street scenes from life, sitting on the street itself", said Keith. "I concentrated on people more than the streets and buildings, and after a while the characters began to dominate and got too big for me to paint there and then. That's when I started taking photographs and working from them back in my studio." With an absolute passion for his work and limitless energy, Keith was producing an unstoppable flow of stunning work, but the relentless pace took its toll. "I spent 6 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

some 20 years painting every day and sketching every night, and I literally painted myself out," he said. "I had to take a break and do something completely different, and I ended up doing building work." This much-needed time out was a very positive step for him, and since returning to painting in 2007 his work has become far more relaxed, bolder and more colourful. during some 27 years as an artist he has developed his own way of doing things. He starts by sketching the paintings in charcoal and stays at the canvas until he has got the images exactly right and the proportions spot-on before starting to paint. "I paint very quickly" he explained, "and because I know I've got the drawing right I can relax at this stage. My ideal, during the process, is to touch each area – such as an arm or a face – only two or three times with the paintbrush." He makes up his own

painting medium from oils, turpentine and dammar varnish, which, he says, adds fluidity to the paint and gives a uniform sheen to the piece. He also never allows work to dry then come back to it. "I paint until it's finished, so I'm mixing wet and wet when I work." Born and bred in Newcastle, Keith now lives in a fairly isolated country spot in Northumberland close to the banks of the River Tyne, with rabbits, deer and foxes for neighbours. "When I was a kid", he said, "I spent as much time as possible outside getting happily scruffy and dirty. Although I love it here I'm aware that Jack will want friends close by, so we may move back into a town to make it easier for him. I believe that most children are happiest when they are up to their eyes in mud and exploring nature and the world around them, and I love capturing these times in my paintings. For now it's fantastic to be able to give Jack these incredible moments, and I know that, just as for me, they will stay with him forever."

'ArT', JOHN D WiLSON'S vibrant new collection, is full of colour, charm and energy, with his famous 'children' stealing the show as always. The collection features new gallery scenes as well as a first time appearance for his figures in domestic settings. "I wanted to show some of the characters at home rather than in their usual gallery setting," said John. "The children, and sometimes their parents, are in a bedroom, a lounge and a bathroom, which are all very warm, familiar scenes for most families." The two Masters paintings feature only well-known and instantly recognisable work on the walls, such as Constable's 'The Haywain', Warhol's 'Campbell's Soup Can' and Klimt's 'The Kiss', unlike previous collections where John has always included something less known. "The gallery scenes in the Masters series are my main style, and give me a chance to paint some amazing and technically difficult works first created by famous artists, whilst at the same time adding my own little bit of childhood humour. I've always tended to put something in that's less well known, such as by Max Hayslette, one of the artists that has really influenced me. This time I decided to feature only recognisable work, and there are 19 mini Masters in total for people to spot." With the works so well known and many people having photos of them in books, he had to make sure that they were

absolutely accurate, spending some four to five hours working on each miniature alone. The end result is a technically perfect painting that would make an amazing piece of art in its own right. John has been doing this style of work for about 16 years, inspired by his then 4-year old youngest daughter who came home from playschool with a wax crayon picture she had done. "I love the way very

young children paint and draw. They have no inhibitions and never worry about lines and colours. I've kept all my daughter's art as well as children's paintings and drawings that local schools have given me, and all the figures in my current collection are based on drawings I've been given in the last year." He initially used wax crayons himself for his children characters, but was concerned that the colours would fade over time, SpRING 2010 FInE ART COLLECTOR 11

so he now works with both oil paint and mixed media. He normally uses acrylic paint for the background walls of his galleries so that he gets a nice flat colour with no brush strokes, and oils for the miniatures as well as when he wants to create a wood floor effect. "It can be difficult getting depth into a picture, so I try to achieve it by painting layers of walls going further and further back." Interestingly, he is right-handed but likes to use his left hand when he's painting his figures so that he gets away from straight lines and paints more like a child would. Although his daughters are now grown up, John still loves watching and learning from young children as they paint and draw and spends time at primary and special needs schools working with them on art projects. He typically spends a day at a school where he'll paint a large background of walls and a floor on a board or canvas. He then asks the children to try to recreate one of his miniature paintings, which he cuts out and sticks on the canvas. Next he gets them to draw a picture of themselves, which he similarly cuts out and sticks on. "The children are always very enthusiastic and have great fun with the

project," he said. "I frequently get pictures from them, which is really lovely, and these can often inspire new elements for my characters". The new collection is one that John is most pleased with. Along with the diverse mix of gallery and domestic scenes, he has also included 'In the Spotlight' - a very different painting to the others featuring just the four characters that appear in the family scenes, and the little black dog. John explained: "The painting follows on from one of my previous pieces, 'Me and My Shadow', and is interesting for me as children can't draw shadows. I wanted to reflect Andy Warhol's well known phrase, "everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes", and 'In the Spotlight' is my way of giving the characters their moment of fame. Children always draw figures that are full facing and with no thought for real life hair colours or clothes, and always draw animals in profile. They are not taught to do this, it's just their natural way, and – shadows aside - I wanted the piece to be true to how they paint." John is on tour with 'Art' until the end of June and will be visiting selected galleries up and down the country. "I have one

of the best jobs in the world and I spend every day doing what I love best. As an artist you can never say that you know it all, and always experimenting with something, like colours, textures or subject matter, is what makes the job so exciting for me", he said. "I never tire of working in my studio, but tours are a great opportunity to get out and about. It's terrific meeting people at the galleries and getting their feedback on my work, and I've had very positive responses to the new collection." "A number of people who have bought my work in the past have said that my paintings make a brilliant talking point in their home, with friends and visitors having a lot of fun trying to name all the famous paintings in the galleries. I'm really thrilled with this reaction as I like to think that when people look at my pictures it makes them smile."

Have you ever wondered what makes an artist tick? In this feature for Fine Art Collector we get up close and personal with some of your favourite artists. Here, renowned figurative artist Hamish Blakely reflects on what brings joy to his life.

Songs

'SALUT, DEMEURE' SUNG By PAvAROTTI The most astounding tenor of all time in my book. I grew up listening to him and was lucky enough to take my wife Gail to see him in his last performance in the UK in 2003. This aria will pin your ears to the back of your head. 'LIBERTANGO' By ASTOR PIAzzOLA Intoxicating Tango at its best. This, to me, expresses the spirit of Gail. It also makes me think I can tango myself and after enough wine, I really think I can! 'CHI IL BEL SOGNO DI DORETTA' SUNG By ANGELA GHEORGHIU This is a heart breakingly beautiful aria and one of the songs played at my wedding. It stirs the souls every time I hear this and transfers all thought to that joyous moment when Gail entered the church and made her way towards me. 'SHAPE OF My HEART' By STING One of his best ever songs, this 14 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

moves me each time I put this on. The lyrics are, on first hearing, obscure, but once you get a sense of what he’s on about, the song just gets better. It plays during the closing credits of the movie 'Leon'. 'KENTUCKy AvENUE' By TOM WAITS As previously, you have to like less than obvious lyrics and Tom is about the best at that. My brother, Cameron, introduced Gail and I to this and it is just so evocative and moving; it tells the story of two kids doing what kids do; but while we hear of their trouble-making antics, there is a sense of restlessness . One of them is wheelchair bound, but this in no way impairs them from dreaming of getting out of town - just wonderful!

THE WALLACE COLLECTION packed with treasures and free to get in, this is worth a visit when in the centre of London. You’ll find classic masterpieces, incredible ceramics and the armour room is eye popping. THE PRADO MUSEUM IN MADRID I was overwhelmed with their collection and, though I can’t recall the individual Artists’ names, I remeber being absolutely hypnotised by some of the paintings. The fact that some of them weren’t commonly known, made me mystified at how great some people are and remain under the radar. It wasn’t fame that mattered, it was the quality of the work. THE POMPIDOU CENTRE You can feel your hair move before you enter this

place, the architecture is so striking. This is fitting as the extensive collection of Modern Art is unrivalled in Europe.

THE HAyWARD GALLERy Years ago I worked here and had the privilege of seeing dali and picasso, amongst many others, up close day after day. The prolonged exposure taught me that the more you look, the more you see. THE NATIONAL GALLERy I’ve visited this more than any other gallery or museum and it never tires. I particularly enjoy the Bp portrait award when it is running. The amount of talent in one room makes it the best art competition in the country and one that should humble any painter.

Artists

CARAvAGGIO The drama and uncompromising sense of reality in his paintings put the Italian master at at the top, for me. pure theatre on canvas, his highly realistic technique was made more remarkable by the bold, painterly expression of his brush and the violence of his passion. ILyA REPIN A Russian genius, this man

displayed astounding nuance and depth in his paintings. “Burlaki” is an astonishing piece and in his portraits, he could reveal the profound truth of his sitters’ personality. PHILIP JACKSON This is a living artist! His sculptures are haunting and exquisite and I am so grateful that Gail, my wife, introduced me to his work, after she discovered him at the London Art Fair. I defy anyone not to be moved by this brilliant man. RON MUECK photo realism is not usually my favourite thing, but in the hands of this Australian sculptor it becomes something quite startling and unnerving. His manipulation of scale and subject demands the viewer to reconsider his/her perception of reality.

Films

12 ANGRy MEN By SIDNEy LUMET This 1957 film is a masterclass in ensemble acting. It has been remade, but the original is untouchable. The performances are just unbeatable SPARTACUS As a child, this is one of the movies I would watch over and over again. It has to be one of the most moving, majestic epics of all time and of course, the ending still makes me blubber like a gin soaked floosie. “I am Spartacus!” THE CLOSET This French comedy is a real tickler. With Gerard depardieu and daniel Auteuil, the acting is beautiful, not clownish, and the storyline is all the more believable for its seemingly unlikely premise. ANGELS WITH DIRTy FACES I would say the best of James Cagney. Again, with my brother, we would watch this obsessively as children and it is probably the most engrossing and original gangster movie of that era. GONE WITH THE WIND Tastes can shift as you get older, but this southern masterpiece holds its grip on me, no matter how many times I view it. Gail has enhanced my love for this film over the years, so much so that it only feels right to watch when we are together.

ELEvEN MINUTES By PAULO COELHO An incredibly easy to read, wonderful novel that explores eroticism, profane and sacred love. When I read it, some of the passages and themes revealed uncanny parallels with my life with Gail. I suppose great writing induces this in the reader. PERFUME By PATRICK SUSKIND Weird and wonderful, this examination of one man’s desperate fight against isolation and desertion, montrously intensified by his singular, bizarre gift, is headspinning. TUESDAyS WITH MORRIE By MITCH ALBOM The true story of Morrie Schwartz, a professor whose many simple, sublime lessons in life are taught to one of his students, Mitch. You are compelled to take note as they are the last lessons he will ever give. THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE By C.S.LEWIS pure nostalgia! This is one of the first books I read as a child. OF MICE AND MEN By JOHN STEINBECK Tragic and tender, this story of two travelling ranch workers explores friendship and its veracity and longevity when pitted against the unremitting stranglehold of the Great depression. 16 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

PARIS - HOTEL COSTES This is one of the places we stayed at on our honeymoon and the hotel is simply the most romantic, evocative and dreamy small hotel I have ever been in. There is a signature scent that permeates the entire establishment and the whole experience gets under your skin. paris is special because originally, I didn’t take to it. School and college trips sucked the life out of it for me. Gail changed my mind however - travelling really must be down to who you’re travelling with, don’t you think? CALIFORNIA - ALL OvER From San Francisco to Los Angeles and San diego. I loved this and it was one of the finest holidays our family ever had. I was 10 years old at the time and naturally enthusiastic about all it had to offer.

about is just the ticket when I am here. Such is the pull of the homestead that, when not working, Gail and I balance our time between periods of blithe sociability and intervals of complete reclusiveness. AFRICA - zAMBIA I haven’t been yet, but I know I will fall in love with this place. The stories I have heard and the stamp it is meant to leave on your soul make this complete my list. The fact that it is Gail’s birthplace means my heart is saving a very important space for this land of poetry.

ITALy - FLORENCE AND ROME Two very different cities but two very sweet, memorable experiences. I adored the food, the opera, the restaurants and the art. What more could you ask for? HOME I love being at home and where we live is a sanctuary. It’s not just where I paint, commonplace pootling

BOrN iN NEWCASTLE UNDEr LYME and now living in Longton, Staffordshire, Joanne spent much of her childhood scribbling cat drawings or designing Cinderella’s next stunning dress. After moving to Cyprus in 1994, she worked as a freelance commercial artist and sign-writer, with her work taking off in all directions - from traditional signs to large-scale murals, commercial art and portraits. After eight years in Cyprus, she decided to further her career as an artist and moved back to the UK with her son Harry, now 10. After completing a degree in 3d design craft at

Staffordshire University her multi-media sculptural works started to develop. She launched her own business and very quickly made a name for herself. Along with mixed media, Joanne also honed her skills in fine metals and silversmithing, achieving two awards from The Goldsmiths' Company. Using diverse media strongly influences her work, and she loves being able to move between pencils, paint and clay. "Working with so many different types of material allows me to mix and match depending on what lends itself best to the design idea, and it makes my daily work wonderfully varied," said Joanne. "Some days it's all hammers and blowtorches on silver, others it's a brush and oils, casting in resins or the soft touch 18 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

The process is like alchemy, and the final outcome has endless possibilities. Never quite knowing if an idea will succeed or not is what makes it so alluring for me." The ‘Sexy Shoes’ sculpture collection was inspired by paolo Nutini’s popular song 'New Shoes', about how a miserable day suddenly turns into a great one when you put new shoes on. "I was looking for a new idea" said Joanne, "and happened to be listening to paolo's album at the time. When I heard the song I thought Yes! That's it". The sculpture range has won accolades too, with articles in the press about her, and an award from GWIIN, the Global Women’s Innovators and Inventors Network. "After all the excitement

of newspaper and magazine articles as well as a prestigious award", she said "I have now started the fantastic journey of taking my beautiful ladies and their gorgeous shoes from my work bench to the gallery." All her concepts start out on pencil and paper, but she tends to move rapidly into the clay-making stage for her sculpture. She'll spend hours getting things exactly right, then after casting the model in resin, she puts even more hours into sanding to get a perfect finish and finally adds colours and jewels. Much of her inspiration comes from observing people and their social behaviour. She does most of her travelling by public transport, and uses the time to watch, listen and collect snippets of life stories

and history, which she explores in her work using humour, compassion and depth. "I'm bombarded with ideas every day and I think the reason I enjoy producing so many different kinds of work is because I have a very vivid imagination", she said. "If I didn't make all these things I'd probably get into a lot of mischief! My work is anything but boring, and if it wasn't for the mess I make, I'd say I have the perfect job."

A UNIqUE COLLABORATION A very special painting by internationally acclaimed artists Alexander Millar and Jeff Rowland is being released to help raise money for a children’s charity.

20 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

CHAriTY rELEASE GrEAT FriENDS Alexander Millar and Jeff Rowland, who share a studio in Newcastle, teamed up last autumn to create something special together. The result was 'Singin' in the Rain' - a magical piece of art featuring Millar's famous 'Gadgie', symbol of the working man, dancing and splashing in an equally famous Rowland rain scene. Oozing exuberance and charm, Rowland's typical romantic rain-drenched setting and Millar's endearing Gadgie come together brilliantly in the painting, which sold within hours of going on display. The incredible success of 'Singin' in the Rain' prompted the two artists and Washington Green to put their heads together to find a way of capitalising on its huge appeal to raise funds for charity. The result is a newly released one-off limited edition print 'Singin' in the Rain' signed by both artists in support of Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Both Millar and Rowland will be donating all of their artists' royalties to the hospital's new state-of-the-art renal unit and Washington Green will match the figure, adding up to a very generous contribution to an extremely worthwhile cause. With Washington Green headquarters in Birmingham, the link to a charity in the city is a very natural one. For Jeff Rowland however, supporting the hospital’s renal unit is particularly meaningful as he himself suffered total kidney failure last year. Now on daily dialysis, he is due to have a transplant in May thanks to wonderful friends offering to donate a kidney, with one very fortunately proving to be a perfect match. "When you suffer total kidney failure it hits you hard, as the treatment and symptoms can be pretty scary and unpleasant," said Rowland. "I have been fortunate enough to enjoy good health over many decades, so my heart really goes out to children who go through kidney failure at such a young age. I feel incredibly blessed to have found the perfect match with a fit and healthy friend of mine, and I just wanted to do something really positive back. painting ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ is my way of saying thank you to everybody.” Millar added: "It's always good giving something back and helping to make a difference, and I particularly wanted to support the hospital’s renal unit because of Jeff's health situation. Last summer I donated an original sketch featuring the red balloon emblem to a fund-raising auction for their new renal unit, and it was fantastic to take this even further with 'Singin' in the Rain'."

The two artists are donating all of their royalties to Birmingham Children's Hospital for its new state-ofthe-art renal unit. publishers Washington Green have generously agreed to match the figure.

BIRMInGHAM CHILDREn’S HOSPITAL Birmingham Children’s Hospital treats over 225,000 sick children each year. Last year, the hospital generated over £1.5 million in charitable donations through their Kidney Kids Appeal for a brand new renal unit. My pictures are about women feeling lush and gorgeous and free, and I think a lot of women who buy my paintings can relate to that

 Lovely

Giclée edition of 150 Image 24" x 17¾" Framed £350

AN ArTiST iN love with colour, Louise Dear’s work simply explodes off the wall with its enticing and inviting images of women who are strong and empowered, as well as feminine and sexily seductive. Quite simply they are not images you can ignore. “My pictures are about women feeling lush and gorgeous and free, and I think a lot of women who buy my paintings can relate to that,” says Louise whose new collection is an invitation to revel in the female form. “It’s about celebrating the female nude as a thing of beauty,” says Louise whose signature ‘look’ is a riotous mixture of gloss paint with copper and gold leaf on aluminium canvasses. “I am a single mother and I understand that need 24 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

for approval which really resonates with my collectors.” She finds that many of her buyers are women who are newly divorced or just out of a relationship and looking for something colourful, bright and affirmative which makes them feel strong and sexy. “They respond to the strong visual message of a woman in control and enjoying her sexuality although sometimes men come and buy for their partners and say the pictures remind them of their wife or girlfriend so ultimately it’s all about how the viewer relates to the image.” Two of the paintings are self portraits and two are of her seventeen year old daughter Lama. “Like all young girls of course her skin is flawless

and she is just lovely” says Louise who accentuates Lama’s youthful beauty with the luscious, glossy lips and long eyelashes of a classic fashion sketch. “Strong colours, bold strokes and interdependent layers dominate as my main subject is my little girl raging against adolescence, music, and boys on her journey to becoming a beautiful young woman - but even having said that it is a vision that I think women of all ages can respond to.” Brought up in a highly creative family Louise grew up in a home where she says many meals were eaten around a table still groaning from the ‘artistic’ debris of her mother’s endeavours. “From papier maché dragons to chicken runs, Easter bonnets to handmade rugs, and pantomime

scenery and disco outfits made out of curtain linings or plastic bags we were always making things and I remember thinking from a young age that I would like to be a sculptor although in the end I trained in fashion.” After college, restless and eager to experience different cultures, Louise upped and left to travel the world which turned into a seven year exploration of

Europe, North Africa, Asia and finally Australia where she settled for a time. “My boyfriend and I bought a 1963 Bedford ambulance which I painted honey pink and we just set off,” says Louise who maintains that this experience has been the key to her artistic expression. “I just adore the sun, and the light of a pink sunset and the rich and sumptuous colours of India and the Far East continue to inspire my work.” Her passion for the colour

pink began as a child and remains undimmed. “I love it as a colour – not in a girly sense but as strong, energetic and life giving colour. It’s the colour of love and passion, romance, fashion and lips and nipples!” She loathes the grey dull skies of a gloomy British winter and says she is going to have to “find a bolthole in the sun someday soon’. Louise now lives and works in Totnes in Devon, a town renowned for its creativity and artistic community, where she has a studio in which she likes to work on up to twenty or thirty pieces at the same time. She claims a mixture of eclectic artistic influences including Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons as well as Art Nouveau, Utamoro and the eighteenth century Japanese artists SpRING 2010 FInE ART COLLECTOR 25

of the ‘floating world’ as well as the ‘superflat’ art movement of contemporary Japan. She always starts each new work on ’Khadi’ paper - a beautiful handmade Indian paper with bevelled edges which she claims “is a lovely way to start a study.” She then works on large sheets

It’s not about sex as such but about feeling desirable which seems to have really struck a chord with collectors of prefabricated aluminium, priming the surface and then throwing, rubbing, pouring and dripping the inks and dyes, glitter and glosses to form a background which is then sanded, scratched and distressed. “I love the chrome and the industrial feel of aluminium. It allows for lots of texture and layers to build up which means that I can ‘fill in’ on different paintings depending on my mood. 26 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

That is the joy of working on lots of pieces at the same time even if only three or four are actually completed.” She likes to alternate her working style, either with the studio doors flung open and music blasting or doing the quieter, more contemplative and intricate work to the calming tones of a Radio 4 play. A night owl, Louise always likes to start late and continue late. “Sometimes in the summer I can still be found paint in one hand, glass of wine in the other as the pub over the road is kicking out!” she laughs. The new collection is, without doubt, Louise Dear at her best. ‘Crush I’ and ‘Crush II’ are explosive and sexy images, while ‘Coo-ee’ has all the saucy overtones of the 1940s pin up. “I love her,” says Louise of the blonde, haired blue eyed girl. “She is the kind of girl who says ‘Oh dear me the wind has blown up my skirt’ in that Marilyn Monroe way that is cheeky, lovable and knowing all at the same time”. Her most personal works are two self portraits ‘Yum Yum’ and ‘Lovely’.

Here the colours and references to sunsets are prominent. “When I travelled and experienced the warmth and glow of a sunset and the way it transfers and reflects light I thought about how it would play out as a feature on the female form. Although these are images of me it’s meant to be ambiguous - it could be any woman” she says. Passionate about the pictures illustrating a powerful vision of women, she wants them to be about women enjoying their sexuality and feeling they are part of a rich and ripe world. “It’s not about sex as such, but about feeling desirable which seems to have really struck a chord with collectors.”

THErE CAN BE few career changes more unusual than veterinary surgeon to watercolour artist, but such a dynamic switch of professions has been the key to Brim’s artistic success in his home country of Turkey and abroad. “My veterinary training has had a hugely positive effect on my paintings, as I have been able to use my scientific knowledge as an instrument to paint pictures.” explains Birim who trained and worked as a vet for most of his life until he retired six years ago. As a child he was surrounded by horses and learnt to observe them both in a physical and emotionally sympathetic way. “I grew up looking at and living with horses,” he says, and this innate sense of how the body of the horse moves, as well as the fiery and sometimes unpredictable equine temperament is apparent in his colourful and energetic paintings. Like many naturally gifted artists Birim paints freely and without any intensive preparation. "The plan of the painting when I start is all in my brain!” he laughs. Working at breakneck speed and often well into the night he says he often does not sleep and prefers to work when it is dark because as he explains “I can concentrate better in silence.” Working at a frenetic pace he can complete a painting in less than a day when really absorbed, and in what he refers to as ‘psychologically the right place’. painting and wetting one area of the canvas and then returning to build up and visually

blur the lines and colours around the horse’s profile is his signature technique. These two paintings are quintessential examples of Birim’s style with horses running and galloping like free spirits. Both have an ethereal quality that is both magical and enchanting.

and understanding. “In my imagination I imagine galloping with the horses, rearing up with them and catching their emotions and dreams – their flying manes in the wind remind me of how life and time flies by quickly” he says.

“I IMAGINE GALLOpING WITH THE HORSES, REARING Up WITH THEM ANd CATCHING THEIR EMOTIONS ANd dREAMS – THEIR FLYING MANES IN THE WINd REMINd ME OF HOW LIFE ANd TIME FLIES BY qUICKLY” “It’s about catching emotions and dreams as well as getting the physical side just right too” he says. ‘Running Wild’ is an energetic and vibrant mix of sunset colours while ‘Running Free’ displays a mellower palette with dark horses on a yellow and russet background. Although Birim likes to experiment and test in oils and acrylics he always does his final canvas in watercolours, as the way the colours blend and ‘trigger’ another colour hue is ideal for the type of blurred paint effect he has become well known for. His approach is confident and assured and there is a sense that his relationship with horses is one of complete empathy

As one of Turkey’s most accomplished and well known watercolour artists Birim paints prolifically and regularly exhibits internationally, but still returns to the roots of his artistic knowledge as often as he can. “I still like to spend time at the jockey clubs and race courses – it’s inspirational and you never know when another sketch may become a new painting.”

JOHN MYATT

ON Tv Myatt's third art series for Sky Arts began airing in February. ‘Virgin Virtuosos’ sees him visiting places that have been made famous by some of the great art masters over the years. He travels with his canvas and a celebrity at his side, and has one day to teach each student (Fern Britton, Maureen Lipman, Keith Allen, Bill Bailey, Imogen Stubbs and Nigel Havers) to paint in the style of the chosen master. Myatt has also been filming for a one-off programme with Antiques Roadshow presenter Fiona Bruce. The programme, which is due to be aired in summer 2010, documents the life of the infamous fraudster Han van Meegeren. His works were sold as legitimate masters to the Nazis, with one falsified ‘Vermeer’ ending up in the possession of the notorious Nazi, Goring.

“THE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE BEEN VERY HECTIC, BUT HUGELY ExCITING FOR ME. IT’S A REAL THRILL TO GET SO MANY REqUESTS ANd TO BE pART OF SO MANY AMAzING pROJECTS – THOUGH I MUST CONFESS IT WOULd BE NICE TO HAVE MORE TIME AT HOME TO pAINT!" 30 FInE ART COLLECTOR SpRING 2010

IN THE CLASSROOM Myatt spent January 2010 lecturing in Australia, which took him to the Institute of Technology at Canberra University where he ran a course on impressionism for the Artists Society of Canberra.

ON SHOW In January and February, an unusual exhibition hosted by the Metropolitan police showcased over 100 fakes and forgeries from the world of art – including the work of John Myatt. The exhibition offered a rare insight into how police investigate crimes against the art market; by raising awareness of art crime, educating people what to look out for and encouraging reporting of these crimes among art professionals.

A WHIRLWInD YEAR In print, in the classroom, on show, on film and on TV - 2010 is already proving to be a busy year for John Myatt, and requests from around the world are still pouring in.

IN PRINT Reviewed by The Times as "a gripping, provocative book”, 'The Conman', the British version of the USA's 'provenance' book, was published in March 2010. It tells the extraordinary true story of the talented, impoverished Myatt and his relationship with drewe, a charming, compulsive liar, who flooded the art market with reproductions of notable modern artists. Meticulously researched by the book’s two authors, it’s an enthralling read.

ON FILM A Hollywood comedy thriller inspired by John Myatt’s story is due to start filming, written by Academy Awardwinning scriptwriters Ian La Frenais and dick Clement whose credits include The Commitments and porridge.
