The stitch Urban Design proposal | 2015 ASPA S.A Internship
Glyfada’s waterfront regeneration In collaboration with: Efi Koutsaftaki Key words: Reconnection, Waterfront, Public space, SUD systems The master plan for Glyfada’s Waterfront links the city’s centre with the coastline, which has previously been difficult for citizens to access due to the associated heavy traffic. By tying in with the openings in the urban fabric, a new relationship between the city and the sea is created, and what was formerly a back-side is turned into a new, highly attractive waterfront.
Key element of the proposal is the central square which tackles both the challenges of flooding and enhancing the biological and social ecosystems of the area. The round shape square is designed based on SUD systems in relation to the adaptable waterfront park which redirects runoff, contains and purifies water during flood conditions. During the summer the stored water could be used in water play features and transform the plaza into a play zone for children!
The central idea of the project is the continuation of the waterfront promenade and the connection to the urban fabric inviting both residents and visitors of the area to experience a new public space near the sea. The project is based on the concept of stitching. Spacious plazas and gardens are integrated into the promenade sequence, creating lush green spaces with dense groves of vegetation The planting consists of trees, shrubs and grasses that are native to North mediterranean landscape. Proposal for a new ‘green’ village In collaboration with: Mara Grozopoulou, Martha Oikonomopoulou, Efi Kasimati, Key words: Residential, Public space, Biodiversity, The project was about the planning advisory for a private master plan on a rural land transformation for a small village in Thessaly, Greece. The land-based design approach builds on the existing natural and rural qualities of the site. The developed masterplan is formed based on a series of small residential clusters and public spaces. Key element of the proposal is the central square which tackles the environmental ecosystem of the area. The green spaces network is designed based on SUD systems. During the summer the stored water could be used in water play features and transform the plaza into a play zone for children!

Active Mosaic National architecture competition | 2013 Renovation of Agias Sofias axis, Thessaloniki TTDZ office In collaboration with: E.Kasimati, E.Panagoulia, A.Apostolinas
Key words: Recall, Expose, Isolate, Love The design proposal sets off from a perceptional experience of public space within the limits of Agia Sophia axis. Humans, whether residents of the historic centre or visitors to the city, become the epicenter of the synthetic process. The way that urban qualities and experiences are perceived by people constitutes the key analytic and synthetic mechanism. The initial reading of the city, in the area of the Agia Sophia axis, ‘tints’ an urban tapestry according to emotional impacts and psychological effects of public space. The range of influence to the user is coded on a diagram of four distinctive sections. These sections are:
These four sections appear in different colors within the synthetic process. The way they correspond with existing and proposed urban qualities exceed geometric characteristics of urban space. This tiny urban dot is described as the MOSAIC.

Nine Elms Blue Line Design Thesis | (work in progress) | 2016 Kingston University London Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, School of Architecture & Landscape Key words: Ecological resilience, Retrofitting, Public Space The project aims to: a)restore the lack of connectivity and permeability all over the area of Nine Elms caused by both the Railway line cut between 1830-60 and the recent developments as well as, b)to encounter with the existing threat of flood risk. To achieve that the proposal expands into different areas all along the railway line from Battersea to Vauxhall. Based in the concept of urban acupuncture, the design process is developed into a network of -pocket-public spaces utilizing different water treatment systems and a unique design language. The strategies of retrofitting, urban recycling and civic participation determine the different interventions in order to transform all these neglected spaces into active public spaces where people could meet and celebrate water. The project explores the idea where instead of taking water out of the city as quick as possible in pipes, keeping in the city could turn it as an asset, as a feature, a place where people want to go and visit.

Scenarios for a post-crisis landscape Design Thesis | 2013 Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Faculty of Engineering,School of Architecture 2nd Prize Environment Competition
Think.Space Key words: Modern ruin, Re-use,Urban farming Over the last few years the ongoing financial crisis had changed all form, function and life of urban metropolis by redefining private property as long as public space and the way we perceive it and use it. Nowadays, public space is picturing, through various everyday scenes, the government’s violence and economic pressure to the people. The arising of poverty, the increasing manifestations and protests, the insecurity of city’s center habitants, the abandoned shopping streets and bankrupted industries are just a few of the characteristics which are mapping “the city on crisis”. This urban decay is the result of a historical process that happens over the last years and is driven by concrete material and social changes.
This design thesis is attempting to define the spatial, social and economical characteristics of the deindustrialization period into the city of Piraeus (Drapetsona) as long as to create ways to overcame the ongoing crisis by redefining the meaning of “ruin” and “urban decay” through a new kind of collective space.
On the other hand, countryside and the return of the city’s population to the village so called as urban exodus is being promote mostly by the media as the salvation to the unsolved economic problems of the people which are trying to find an alternative solution through the de-urbanization. Reactivating the stream 4th year Studio | 2012 Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Faculty of Engineering, School of Architecture In collaboration with: M.Polymenidis Key words: Water Management, Biodiversity, SUD Costantinides stream flows through Touba, one of Thessaloniki’s largest boroughs. From late 19th century it was progressively canalized while almost half of it was completely covered before discharging to Thermaikos gulf. However, the stream can still be traced beneath Touba’s dense urban fabric. Our project attempts to propose an alternative approach, where the urgent ecological shifts are incorporated into a larger cultural change. The complex organization of the design associates the new stream space, linear series of trails and paths near water and a series of gardens in both of the stream’s banks. The whole design becomes a linear park, a river-garden which organises the situations, uses and views aiming to reintroduce the stream as an open accessible public space to the city. For the drawing of the river itself – conscious of the useless effort to design a fixed river bed and aware that a river usually flows irregularly – we proposed a wider bed whose form and depth could address the changing river flow creating a dynamic field of small terraces and pathways
which emerge or disappear depending on the tide level. The planting strategy was developed aiming to restore and enhance stream’s biodiversity and also to depict natures colours and seasonal changes over the year.

Archstudies.gr Online magazine | 2011-present Co-founder-Editor-in-Chief Key words: e-magazine, archive, communication Archstudies.gr is a web page for publishing and archiving architecture, design and visual art projects by students in the above fields, from undergraduate or postgraduate level. In this way, it is attempted the broadening of the existing field of research for both students but also a wider community beyond the narrow circle of architects through the display and interaction of the architectural approaches and emerging trends as reflected in the different academic schools in Greece or abroad. Members of AS team, are engaged in different fields and their research interest is extending from digital tools, fabrication methods and interactive architectural environments to urban decay and modern ruins. Since launching archstudies.gr, all members of the team, are curating lectures, competitions and architectural exhibitions.
