September 2018

DG Dr. Shailesh Palekar RID 3131

DG Message - Dil Se shipped across by road and more is pouring in to now rehabilitate the people for long term settlement.

My dear friends, Wishing everyone a very happy Ganapati festival and let us pray that Lord Ganesha will bless us to do better and better in this world. The month of August started off in blitz when our District created a landmark by achieving the Guinness Book of World Record for the highest online pledges for Organ Donation in 8 hours. I must salute all the Club Presidents and their members who were so motivated to push for this awareness campaign and inspite of Maharashtra bandh we could get online 22311 valid pledges . Kudos to President Amruta of RC of Pune Gandhibhavan who initially scripted this idea. Rains and floods in Kerala have created tremendous disaster in the lives of people and the conditions for survival have been tremendously affected. The best part of this is how Rotary and people rally in such a situation of crisis. I must admit that Rotarians from every nook and corner responded fabulously to the needs of people and from our own District shelter material , clothing , food etc to the value of Rs 1 crore have been

The District Membership seminar was held at Muktangan Auditorium on 16th August , the event was hosted by RC of Pune Katraj. I must appreciate the efforts of President Anant Tikone, Convenor Nitin Naik, team Katraj and District Membership Team led by Director Anil Parmar for a flawless event . This event was attended by about 350 Rotarians. For once, the program had a different tune to it, we had breakout sessions for New and Senior members with different content for each group. This was appreciated by one and all. I completed 58 club installations on 7th August and my Official Club Visits started on 17 th August. By the time I am writing this article 12 visits have been completed. I have planned the visits with a different concept in mind. I am initially visiting all small but growing clubs in the district, chalking out a roadmap for them to grow and then the strategy is such that the Assistant Governors will work on the roadmap to help them grow. I will be taking a review of all such clubs again in the month of April which would help me know the progress of these clubs. Visiting various clubs is indeed a huge eye opener for me and Shobhana and we are enjoying this process. We look forward to continue this joyous journey and try and help clubs create miracles. Journey to Organ Donation – RID 3131 Guinness World Record DG Dr Shailesh, in his early training events challenged his batch of presidents to think about taking Rotary district 3131 name to Guinness World Record through a mega service project activity. Kidney failure of a close relative in the same period persuaded me to take up ORGAN DONATION DRIVE. AG Rtn Parag Mulye took the idea to the execution level by uploading the form for GWR “ Maximum people to pledge online for Organ Donation in 8 Hours” After 2 months, we received approval for attempt with a condition to have one Medical Org as primary Health Care Partner. Thus, Sahyadri Hospitals came into picture. Also got support and guidance of Mrs Aarti Gokhale who is the Chief Coordinator of Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre. Basic steps mentioned below were completed by me & AG Parag n Got Pre-approvals for website n Pledge Form n Special Witnesses n Counting Method n Flow Charts

Website, www.giftlife.co.in was created as a platform for organ pledge activity. Next step was creating awareness, promotion & concept selling. We begin our activity with TRAINING THE TRAINERS programme, which was attended by 100 + rotary volunteers. Many Rotarians were on the toes for doing technical presentations in many educational institutes & corporate

offices. More than 200 presentations were helpful to create awareness in & around Pune City. Professional support for the promotion through social media helped us to reach out to 25 lakh of people within short period. DG Shailesh was invited on TV channel for the promotion & also Radio FM 95.0 helped us to keep the subject live. Mega shows were organised to attract the people towards the noble cause. An effective press conference also helped to attract print media. The D day planning was more thrilling & exciting. n Listing and bringing @ 300

volunteers for setting up Kiosks in about 40 companies /Institutions n Setting up of server room n Assigned volunteers to places with

dongals, standees, posters and all required support. n Data validation processes set up n Plans for volunteers and Special

Witnesses and adjudicator all set in place. In the mean while a new challenge become prominent due to MAHARASHTRA BANDH. But the team was ready to face all challenges in-spite of many hurdles such as

But our team spirit & confidence did not allow us to stop & exactly at 11 am we had a flag off by Dr Vimal Kumar Bhandari, Director of NOTTO and The Guinness World Records Adjudicator. Although some internet lines were down, our plan of pledging from mobile proved to be a boon. Registrations started pouring in and previous record was broken by 1 pm!! Continuous support by Rotractors and volunteers enabled the data validation & at 7 pm we had 24446 pledges out of which 22311 were counted towards GWR!!. The most interesting part was, we got pledges from 950 cities from all parts of India. This was simply amazing. I was thrilled to hold the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD CERTIFICATE for Rotary district 3131. It was a Rotary moment for me & for my tenure as a CLUB PRESIDENT. By Rtn Amruta Deogankar and Rtn Purushottam Agarwal President RCP Gandhi Bhavan and President RC NEW PANVEL

Water Conservation Project Transforms Pingori

A joint global grant project with Rotary Clubs of Fort Collins Breakfast, Sports City and Aundh has transformed a drought affected hilly village into a green farming paradise. A dry village which needed water tankers just a couple of years back, now has water throughout the year, thanks to a combined project of excavation and desilting of an

existing reservoir and installing a drip irrigation system over 50 acres. This Global Grant Project is worth Rs 24 lakhs ($36,867) benefiting over 2500 villagers and families.

Global grant has enabled increased water storage for percolation and raising the water table downstream of the reservoir over 500 acres in 4/5 villages, including Pingori benefitting

2500 residents. Drip irrigation systems saved 60% water, increased yield and allows 3 to 4 crops to be grown annually. Award Winning Article at Membership Seminar Ann to Rotarian - A Prosperous Journey ! Prefix Rotarian to your name means a lot. That Rotary pin close to your heart speaks a lot about the person. I became a part of the Rotary family in 2011 as an Ann. I did participate in all the activities as any other family member would, but still always felt something was missing!! What was that? It was the Rotary Pin. I realized that, if you are not a Rotarian you are not given individual role and responsibility as a leader. I became a Rotarian in 2014. Finally I got the Prefix Rotarian added to my name. I was really enthralled and

started sharing this newfound JOY with everyone. Life before was good, but after becoming a Rotarian, has become extraordinarily good. I would like to share one of Rotary moments I cherish. Rotary has become our/my identity in the society I stay. People recognize me more as a Rotarian and keep on saying statements like ...”aapke Rotary mein kya naya chal raha hai”, if there is some petty issue related to social cause “aapke Rotary ko bolo na kuch karne ke liye “ ...feels really good “HUMARA ROTARY” !! It has truly been a prosperous journey, have understood the concept of the Four Way Test and I do try to follow

it. Feels so good, that we Rotarians are blessed enough to bring a small bit of difference in someone’s life and can always be an inspiration for the people who have enough and able to contribute. Service above self which is the motto of Rotary, does bring lot of peace in self, as well as in the life of people whom we try to serve. Yes! Rotary has made me believe “Service is Peace personified.” I pen off with the words of Mahatama Gandhi ji “Happiness depends on what you can give, not what you can get. ” By Rtn. Arti Bhatia

Designated Month Literacy and Basic Education September is designated as “Literacy and Basic Education” month. It is one of the six focus areas of Rotary International Education, as we all know is a key which leads us to a treasure of knowledge, information, skills and prosperity. At the same time it saves us from many inconveniences in life which arise due to illiteracy & lack of education. It is said ‘A child without education is like a bird without wings’. Hence, governments around the world have included ‘Education’ in the Fundamental rights. The National Literacy Mission defines `Literacy’ as acquiring the skills of reading, writing & arithmetic and ability to apply them to one’s day–to–day work. The literacy rate is calculated on the basis of population aged seven years or above who can read and write with

understanding. It we take a look at the literacy figures, we will find that literacy ratio in India are among the lowest in the world. Whereas world literacy rate is 86.3%, the same for our country is 74.04% (2011 census) with males at 82.14% & females at 65.46%. Among states, Kerala tops the list with 93.9% & Maharashtra is at 82.91%. Thus, eventhough we have made huge economic strides to become the 5 th largest economy in the world, we are way behind the world literacy rate. Unless we achieve near 100% literacy rate, our people will not be able to reap the fruits of economic developments. Rotary South Asia for Development & Cooperation has set 100% literacy target for South Asia. To achieve the target, `Rotary India Literacy Mission’ (RILM) has been established with a target of total literacy & quality education. To promote the same, a `TEACH’ program has been designed wherein T:Teacher Support, E: E- learning, A: Adult literacy , C: Child Development H: Happy School. (Adult means all individuals above the age

of 15 years). Simultaneously, strategy has been designed for meaningful co-operation with all actors in the field by forging strong partnerships with Government, Corporate, National / State specific NGOs and International organizations. In rural areas due to poverty, education is not the highest priority among poor as compared to other necessities. Sons are put in school; daughters are pulled to help out on agricultural farms. Inadequate class rooms, untrained teachers, lack of sanitation & drinking water facilities, no toilets; all this leads to gender disparity in literacy rates and overall low percentage of literacy. Achieving 100% literacy is a gigantic task. We all will have to join hands & participate in the literacy mission and address all the problems listed above. This can best be done if we promote the TEACH’ program which takes care of all the necessities. With so many agencies working on the literacy problem, we are sure to achieve the target at an early date.

They were there for a rive cleanup, during which they removed toilets, refrigerators, car parts, and garbage. That event led to an ambitious initiative called Cleaning the Rivers of the World. So when Rico’s district governor, Helaine Campbell, asked clubs to carry out a signature waterrelated project in 2013-14, Rico proposed a cleanup of the Ameca River. With the help of Vicente Paredes of the Rotary Club of San Pedro de Tlaquepaque, Mexico, who connected people and worked on logistics, the Rotary clubs of Ameca, Mexico, and of Rohnert Park-Cotati and South Ukiah, California, carried out the first Ameca River cleanup

day in April 2014. They have since organized more cleanups of the river. That project eventually expanded to become Cleaning the Rivers of the World, which has challenged Rotary clubs across the globe to clean up a river. Rotarians have organized cleanup projects in Colombia, India, Nigeria, Peru, Turkey, and Venezuela, as well as in other parts of Mexico and the United States. Rico says. “Now I can say, with a clear conscience, that I did everything I could to eave a better world for our kids.”

Rotary partners with Mediators Beyond Borders for lasting peace Preventing conflicts from escalating into violent crises is 60 times more cost effective than intervening after violence erupts. A recent partnership between the membership service organization Rotary and Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) aims to bring community-based solutions to prevent conflict in more communities. Rotary has worked with MBBI – an impact organization founded on the principle of people-centered peace building – since 2013 to advance our common goals for peace. This new, partnership will enable Rotary members to train with MBBI to sharpen their mediation, dialogue and other conflict transformation skills. Rotary’s 1.2 million members, located in over 200 countries and regions, will help MBBI expand its network of trained mediators – potentially transforming conflict in communities not previously reached. MBBI’s members are at the center of a movement for global peace building through advocacy, capacity building and consultations. MBBI joins a list of Rotary service partners including, Ashoka , Habitat for Humanity, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, and Peace Corps.

Empathy

The first Commandment of Servant Leadership It improves emotional well-being of people around you, deepens relationships and may provide insight into poor performance or disengagement issues.

Servant Leadership, for the 21st Century, points out that there is a new leadership paradigm, a new moral principle that says, “The only authority deserving one’s loyalty is given freely and knowingly granted by the led to the leader.” And therefore, Leadership today requires more than just inspiring the necessary performance to achieve the goals. Servant Leadership is a responsibility that requires a tremendous amount of time and effort in dealing with people, their feelings, attitudes, expressions, heartfelt concerns, apprehensions etc. without being judgmental and critical. This entails great Empathy on part of a servant leader. Empathy is a key practice for the servant leader – and also a responsibility. mpathy begins with listening – E truly being present in the moment with someone and listening with your whole self. And, that is an art. Listening not only with your ears but also with your heart. If you are forming your response while listening, then you are not truly present with them. When empathizing with a person you should always tell them that if you were in their shoes, you would feel the same way. Which is true, of course. If you were born where they were born, grew up in the same family, experienced all the same matters, you would be that person. Therefore, you would feel the same. This simple recognition has the power to diffuse many difficult situations. But it must be genuine. When someone is sharing their thoughts or emotions they are clearly aware if they are receiving empathy. They can feel it. This creates a trusting belief that the leader is intrinsically concerned about them.

pulse

Evidence is beginning to emerge that indicates empathetic leaders contribute more to the bottom line (Achieving Goals) than the old style of leadership. “People don’t care how much you know, they want to see and feel how much you care.” By Rtn Manjoo Phadke

Interact Activity – Eco friendly Ganapati workshop

by RC Kharghar Midtown

Pollution has become a monster. We as RC Kharghar Midtown decided to reduce pollution. Ganapati festival is a major festival in Maharashtra. Ganapati idols are mostly made up of Plaster of Paris(POP). Immersion of POP idols pollute rivers and lakes and in turn many aquatic animals die. To generate this awareness we undertook Eco Friendly Ganapati making workshops for Interactors of Harmony International School, Kharghar. We have conducted such workshops over years and till now beneficiaries are around 1000 people.

This has artistic value, environmental value, inculcating culture in our youth and also students get satisfaction of creation. Ann Shital Waray conducted this workshop, over 130 students participated and all had fun playing with the clay which also enhanced their creative skills and with the added benefit of creating awareness of pollution. We also explained eco friendly immersion methods wherein we can reuse this clay next year as well. RC Kharghar taking one step towards eliminating environmental pollution!

Dear friends, Our Rotary year has started with a big BANG and as DG says there is “BUZZ”” in the district- positive one, giving message to lakhs of people not only in our district but all over India ! Yes, our “ORGAN DONATION DRIVE “. It was a huge success in spite of adverse situation in state i.e. when everything in Maharashtra was kept shut/bandh. September is the month to work harder, to turn our vision of making our world more literate into reality. It is rightly said - give education to a child and all other things in life will come automatically to him or her. Let us strive to make more HAPPY SCHOOLS, educate more illiterate adults and send more children back to school. Let us all pledge to achieve this on WORLD LITERACY DAY, 8th September.
