POINTS TO PONDER

FROM THE DESK OF HR

In school days we were taught this poem. After many long years saw it pasted on the dashboard of one of our colleagues. Couldn't resist the temptation of reproducing it for you here....

It is a pleasure to have our own "Online" Performance Management System in Rohan finally. Theoretically, Performance Appraisals are intended to be a people development tool. But usually and unfortunately, Performance appraisal happens only once in a year. All aspiring eyes are focused on one and only one thing -'the increment'. Most of the times, the basic essence of the Appraisals is lost and most of the appraisees' and appraisers are tuned towards reaching maximum rewards to their team. The aftermath of every performance appraisal is in most of the cases leaves a heart burn to both. Such approach is very myopic.. it may fetch one temporary and short term rewards, but cannot strengthen the foundation of a person as an expert and a true- blue professional. It is also to be noted that the current Performance Management System is digitized. In this financial year the whole cycle shall be repeated at least thrice with equal intervals. Regularly, each one of us will get an opportunity to know where we are falling short and how we can rise above our own thresholds. The cumulative record of the cycles will dictate the growth path for each one of us. So start documenting your achievements from April 2011 onwards, keep them ready for the next cycle... each one of us must aspire to be Super Performer that we feel from within, but somehow miss the mark in the whole run of events.

TOGETHER... WE CAN

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

LAUGHTER A DAY

June 5 was declared as World Environment Day by the UN General Assembly in 1972. United Nations designed World Environment Day as the main tool to create worldwide awareness about hot environment issues. Behind the declaration of WED by UN, the main objectives were - • To give a human face to environmental issues • Empower to become agents of sustainable and equitable development • Promote to change attitude towards the environment and advocate partnership between each human being and each society to ensure a safe future. World Environment Day is celebrated around the globe to promote alertness regarding scorching issues of environment pollution, drastic climatic changes, green house effect, global warming, black whole effect etc, among human beings on the planet Earth. Here are some tips which can be follow for "Environmental responsibility" by every one • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use • Take printouts only when necessary Use both sides of the paper • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs • Reusing shopping bags. • Carpooling saves a lot of fossil fuel and reduces the air pollutants to that extent • Turning off the water when not in use • Share a magazine subscription with a friend, not only will you share the cost but you will cut down on the amount of trees used! • Keep the Air conditioner at 22 to 25 degrees, it is eco-friendly PRIVATE CIRCULATION ONLY.

Construction safety responsibility is all about people getting together and making a commitment to do whatever they can in order to ensure the safety all those working on a construction site. There are many ways in which this can be achieved. There are various approaches to safety: from the top level which is government to the lower level which is comprised of individuals. This article will explore these with a focus on how a strong sense of responsibility can be created. • Individual Level : This level is all about you and your responsibility when it comes to construction site safety. While you may think that an individual alone has little capacity or ability to ensure good safety levels, the fact remains that a great majority of safety hazards are identified by individuals and not by groups of people higher up. If everyone gets into the spirit of watching out for each other as if it was a life or death situation (which it is in construction), then the level of safety on worksites can only increase. • Company Level : Just above the individual is the company which is typically in charge of a worksite. One of the most common ways of committing to ensuring good safety levels is by formulating a construction safety policy. Furthermore, it is the responsibility (according to OHS legislation) of the company to provide Construction Safety Training to all those present on the construction site. If all companies were to enthusiastically take the initiative of providing training, then safety levels can only go through the roof. • Government Level : Finally, the top level of Construction Safety Responsibility is government whose main task is to set out and enact safety legislation, but most importantly enforce it throughout the country or state. However, the irony is that despite it being on the top level of responsibility, it is probably the least effective in ensuring safety (which is more dependent on individuals than anyone else). Overall, a great sense of Construction Safety Responsibility is best created by all levels working together in a spirit of harmony and integrity. HATS OFF Achievement: MRPL Team for achieving three million Safe Man Hours in the month of May 2011!!
